Saphila: Individuals Claim the Tools of Scale

A Syrian refugee’s charity in Switzerland is shaping a new model for small organisations, Timo Elliott told the Saphila conference this week. JASON BANNIER reports.

When thinking of enterprise technology, expensive rollouts and complex processes often come to mind. But, as 51��global innovation evangelist said in a keynote at��the Saphila 2025 conference at Sun City, the future lies just as much with the individual as with the enterprise.

Saphila is a biennial conference for the 51��user group community, hosted by the African 51��User Group (AFSUG) in partnership with SAP, a global tech giant specialising in enterprise software.

Elliott pointed to a quiet revolution in which small organisations and everyday users are taking innovation into their own hands, often without the need for formal IT departments. He said that , a unified low-code and pro-code application development platform, can play a key role in this shift by enabling users to create business apps, automate processes, and build digital workspaces with the help of AI and pre-built components.

“This is not just for big companies and big problems,” he said. “51��Build is a fusion environment. Here’s a lovely example from the 51��Innovation awards for 2024: a not-for-profit organisation in Switzerland called (). It was founded during the COVID era by a Syrian refugee in Switzerland. He noticed that restaurants were all closed and having this excess food while other people were going hungry.”

Elliott said the organisation now distributes 18 tons of food every weekend to those in need. Using 51��Build Apps, the team was able to quickly create a small application in a no-code, low-code drag-and-drop environment to handle tasks like volunteer scheduling.

The app created by the company includes document automation, making it easy to scan IDs for both volunteers and recipients. He said that these technologies help organisations move faster, especially when it comes to integration – often one of the biggest hurdles in transformation projects. The allows users to link systems with minimal effort, handling most of the complexity automatically.

In an exclusive interview, Elliott told Gadget: “I’m really interested in innovation that is much closer to the individual business person. Companies have always done innovation, but for individuals it’s harder to innovate – or has been. Now, with the latest technologies, you can vibe code yourself even if you know nothing about coding. All of that adds up to a new opportunity.”

That shift is being powered by a new wave of accessible tools – cloud services and embedded AI assistants – that allow non-technical users to build and deploy solutions quickly. Elliott said this as one of the most important developments shaping enterprise technology today.

“Essen für Alle has gone forward. It’s just a handful of people, lots of volunteers, but they needed a little bit of application, a little bit of technology to help them.”

This kind of solution has become a tangible reality. As barriers to entry continue to fall, even small, volunteer-led organisations are building tools that make a real operational difference.

“It was so much easier and quicker and more available to a tiny organisation that it just would have been done by hand, and nobody would ever thought about trying to use technology to do it.”

Elliott said this marks a new phase in digital transformation, driven by individuals who know their needs and now have the means to build what they require.

“It’s an organisation like that where every cent otherwise goes to helping people. This is a micro example of something that I believe that individuals everywhere will be able to vastly accelerate innovation because individual people who know the business, and know what’s possible, will be able to innovate – without IT and technology being a bottleneck.”

Elliott said that innovation was no longer a sporadic initiative or the domain of a select few within an organisation. Instead, it is becoming a structured, repeatable discipline with defined methodologies, measurable outcomes, and continuous refinement built into how companies function. This was��much like finance or operations.

“The end result is that innovation and digital transformation should be a business process itself that increasingly can be optimised.”

What makes this feasible now is a shift in how business systems work. Rather than requiring manual analysis and lengthy decision-making cycles, systems are becoming more proactive, intelligent, and suggestive.

He said SAP’s approach to driving innovation can be broken down into four key steps: assessing where a business stands today, identifying the most impactful areas for improvement, defining a future state using best practices, and implementing those changes with the help of intelligent tools – all while supporting the human side of transformation through training and adoption. This leads into best practices, implementation via the cloud, and finally, the crucial phase of change management.

“Technology is never enough, so you need to actually do something in the business to take advantage of that – there’s all of the technology adoption side, and the people side of things.”

51��has recently invested in , a tool designed to help employees understand and effectively use new systems in their daily work. By providing guidance and support, WalkMe facilitates smoother adoption of technology, ensuring that staff can confidently navigate and utilise the tools necessary for their roles.

Yet, Elliott said that tools alone weren’t enough. This is where AI can make a significant difference in the human side of transformation. He pointed to studies showing AI outperforming humans in emotional intelligence tests, and highlighted a practical benefit: the ability to scale personalised communication and reassurance during times of change.

“The essence of transformation is helping people understand how they fit in the strategy and help them feel like they’re being part of the transformation and excited about it, rather than resisting it because they’re worried about their jobs and functions. At scale, it’s really hard to go to every single person that’s affected and sit down with them and spend all of the time to understand any questions and reassure them, whereas with AI you can actually do that at scale.”

He said this brings the process full circle, with innovation and digital transformation becoming structured business functions that can be continuously refined and improved.

“My favourite quote is from Picasso: ‘Computers are useless. They can only answer questions.’ Thankfully, asking the right questions, having the context to understand what’s going on and what is possible, is something that remains very human.”

To cultivate that creativity, business leaders must rethink how they support employees in using new tools. Elliott suggests a three-part model: leadership, a dedicated lab team to experiment and track best practices, and a decentralised crowd of early adopters.

Looking ahead, Elliott said SAP’s boldest move had��already been made: committing fully to the cloud. The real challenge now was bringing customers along – even when it demanded difficult conversations. Empowering organisations remained central to the strategy, but individuals shaping outcomes on the ground may drive the next wave of enterprise innovation.

Rabobank Accelerates Digital Transformation with 51��BTP

Basis for AI-driven automation

is taking a quantum leap in its digital transformation with the (BTP). Among others, 51��Integration Suite and API Management, components of 51��BTP, provide efficient and standardised access to data from . This is crucial for the bank’s AI initiatives and process automation.��

Robotisation and automation are key spearheads at Rabobank. ‘We aim to automate manual and repetitive tasks so that our employees can focus on the complex thinking,’ says Robert van Uden, Solution Architect and Business Analyst for 51��BTP at Rabobank.��

‘We take the robot out of the human,’ Van Uden continues. ‘Tedious tasks? We can probably automate those. Hate it? Automate it. That way, we make work more fun, improve the quality of processes by eliminating errors and save on costs.’��

Successful automation��

Within Rabobank, there are already several examples of successful automation. For example, a robot checks daily whether money for, say, a mortgage or insurance has arrived in an account, checks whether the description indicates where the money should go and, if necessary, performs the transfer.��

To handle invoice-related questions from suppliers, Rabobank built the chatbot Billy. Van Uden: ‘Colleagues were spending much of their time answering the same questions over and over again, such as “when will my invoice be paid?” That’s where the chatbot could take over some of the work.’��

Help from AI��

A next step is to use artificial intelligence (AI) for new processes or improving processes. ‘AI will never completely replace humans, but AI can help and advise our employees. For example, AI can alert the user to a fraudulent invoice, after which a robot collects the information needed for further analysis. That analysis is then human work.’��

Another example is the automatic enrichment of incoming invoices using AI. In this example, 51��Process Automation retrieves an invoice from email after which 51��Document Extraction Service extracts data from the invoice using OCR technology. This data is then analysed and enriched by AI/ML models in 51��Data Intelligence Cloud, which perform categorisation and validation. After validation, the system automatically books the invoice into 51��S/4HANA and schedules payment, minimising manual intervention and increasing efficiency and accuracy.��

SAP, unless��

Rabobank has a ‘51��unless’ policy for process automation. In this, 51��S/4HANA is the ‘single source of truth’ for the consistent and reliable data needed for automation. ‘With a new issue, we always look at our standard solution 51��S/4HANA first,’ says Van Uden. ‘Then we see whether there is a service on 51��BTP that meets the need. Only then do we consider solutions from other vendors.’��

Rabobank is now migrating to 51��S/4HANA in the private cloud in stages. For finance, the bank already made the switch, as part of the OneFinance project. Among others, Accounts Payable will soon follow. ‘We are not only migrating to a new ERP environment, but also replacing outdated interfaces, such as the one with our payment lane,’ notes Van Uden.��

51��Integration Suite��

51��Integration Suite plays a crucial role in replacing outdated interfaces and making data available to applications such as chatbots efficiently and in a uniform way. The suite provides standard connectors and components to extract data from 51��S/4HANA and share it with other parties and applications. Think of low-code Mendix applications that need data from 51��S/4HANA, or retrieving and sharing invoice information. ‘With 51��Integration Suite, you connect to 51��S/4HANA very easily,’ Van Uden observes.��

Rabobank uses several components of the suite. API Management makes data from the backend system accessible, applying mappings, logic and validation for reliable and consistent information transfer. 51��Cloud Integration takes care of ‘interfacing’ with third parties. Messages can be encoded and encrypted with a standard component, increasing security. 51��Cloud Transport Management ensures smooth transfer of software components from development to production. These solutions support Rabobank’s vision of automation and robotisation, making processes more efficient and secure.��

What You Might Have Missed at 51��TechEd 2023: Remember Your ABCs

From the keynote stage to the showfloor, whether you were a dev, a customer, or a partner, all around one phrase was repeated time and again: “”.

The focus of more than 5,000 tech and business decision-makers was fixed firmly on AI and what it could do for their businesses, right now – the products 51��has released through 2024, and what is coming next.

With responsible, reliable, and relevant AI that’s built for business, the view of the thousands of delegates at TechEd 2023 was that the future is looking bright.

There was a wealth of incredible insight and opportunity at TechEd. In fact, it was a little bit like going back to school because the things that stood out to me were the ABCs.

A is for Automation

First, I was struck by the enormous potential businesses can realise through the power of enterprise automation.

With the help of AI, technology is helping developers and IT teams automate repetitive, mundane tasks and make better decisions, faster. By embedding generative AI capabilities into , , and , we’re helping customers analyse, integrate, automate, and monitor business processes way more simply – and then immediately write the code to make those processes better. It’s that easy.

In my discussions with customers, it was clear that complementing process improvement and insights with enterprise architecture insights will be a real force for change in the future. Customers are excited to understand how to optimise and tune their architecture for the best performance across their entire IT stack.

But this isn’t future-gazing. Businesses are seeing real results today. Take , one of Asia’s leading healthcare companies, providing pharmaceutical distribution and digital and commercial services across 26,000 direct outlets. Zuellig Pharma implemented best-in-class processes across its 51��infrastructure, creating more than 180 automations using 51��Build Process Automation to streamline and simplify its business.

B is for Build

��Aligned to the focus on automation is the empowerment of a new, powerful resource for IT departments – citizen developers enabled by . And given every developer will be an AI developer, the opportunity for an AI-infused future is tantalising.

, CIO of Indian car giant , said it best.

“We started identifying tasks that don’t require a lot of human intelligence and that enabled our human workforce to focus on more strategic initiatives,” she said. “That led us to automate more than 250 business processes in 3 months, most of which was done by a community of more than 100 citizen developers.”

“That’s great, but let’s talk about benefits. We count more than 900 workdays saved, and more than 400 development days saved in just a year’s time. We’ve seen a 35% gain in developer efficiency and 20% faster execution of our jobs. And we’ve saved more than 13,000 trees. All in one year,” concluded Nanavati.

The story of Mahindra & Mahindra shows the power of a workforce that has been empowered to make real change to their IT systems and the tangible results that can be realised. And with the ability to link low-code, no-code development with pro-code development via and , as well as increasing amounts of natural language interaction through , it is easier than ever to modernise processes fast.

C is for Clean Core

At SAP, we know better than most that enterprise systems can be complex. That’s why a – a cloud compliant, modern, flexible ERP that can be updated and scaled simply – is at the centre of our strategy.

And it’s a concept that’s also at the heart of the future strategic direction for all of our customers.

Takuya Sakai, CIO of , embodies that more than most. His company has used 51��ERP globally for more than 20 years, over which time the system became more and more complex.

“That complexity incurred significant maintenance costs, prevented the company from quickly introducing new innovation, and ultimately hindered its growth,” said Sakai-san. “It was very critical to reduce the complexity.”

Using 51��Business Technology Platform (BTP), Hitachi HiTech was able to easily upgrade 51��S/4HANA systems in the public and private cloud – at the same time reducing the number of add-ons and customisations in the software down from 9,000 to just 800.

“Using 51��BTP we can build smart, global digital processes without touching the 51��S/4HANA core. 51��BTP is a very, very important tool to accelerate our business processes,” concluded Sakai-san.

What’s next: AI for business, not AI for AI’s sake

��It’s easy to get carried away by hype and excitement, especially around innovation like generative AI.

But what I saw at 51��TechEd was even more exciting – new innovations, here today, that are already making a tangible difference to real business problems.

The key is in the context – using your AI to connect data, not just collect it. By generating reliable, responsible insights that understand the context of the business processes that surround them, Business AI will help boost productivity, efficiency, and real outcomes.
