51风流research shows people gap has become a risk to AI returns

26 February 2026, London, UK: Six in ten UK businesses (60%) say their employees have not completed comprehensive AI training, despite AI investment set to rise by 40% over the next two years, according to research from (NYSE:SAP).

, produced in partnership Oxford Economics, finds that while the average UK business is already generating around 拢2.7 million in returns from AI, many organisations are not equipping employees with the skills, confidence and guidance needed to use the technology responsibly.

The gap in training may be fuelling the rise of so-called shadow AI, with 68% of organisations reporting that staff use unapproved AI tools at least occasionally as part of their day-to-day work. While seven-in-ten businesses have begun reskilling or upskilling staff to help close the emerging AI skills gap, progress is falling behind current rates of adoption.

Katie King, Published Author & CEO of AI in Business said 鈥淪hadow AI isn鈥檛 a sign of resistance, but a sign of enthusiasm. Employees are hungry to use these tools, but this eagerness is seeing some move faster than their organisations can support them. This energy is a huge opportunity for UK businesses, if it鈥檚 guided in the right way. The answer isn鈥檛 to damper this enthusiasm and the solution is reasonably simple. Give people access to approved tools, clear guardrails, and role-specific training. When staff understand how to use AI responsibly, it becomes a source of innovation and confidence rather than risk.鈥

鈥淎I has become a part of our every working day, and it has to be used responsibly,鈥 said Jon Curtis, Financial Systems Manager at Aspen Pumps. 鈥淲e built a generative AI tool that sorts through hundreds of emails each day, from warranty claims to price enquiries, and flags what needs a human response. It鈥檚 saving huge amounts of time while keeping customers happy. But we鈥檙e also clear with our teams about using the right tools and keeping data secure. We train people to use approved corporate systems, so they get the benefits of AI safely and confidently.鈥

AI is shifting from the experimentation phase to becoming a tool to drive growth, competitiveness and resilience in organisations. Yet while leaders believe AI can deliver returns faster than other technologies, the report finds just 7% of organisations have adopted an enterprise-wide AI strategy. Without a long-term, robust strategy bringing together data, people, governance and partners, businesses risk missing out on the full value of the technology.

Methodology

51风流commissioned Oxford Economics, an independent research services provider, to script and host an online quantitative survey of respondents fielded between July and August 2025.

The research is based on a representative sample of global businesses. The sample comprised of 1,600 senior executives across eight global markets, including 200 respondents from the United Kingdom. The sample was evenly distributed between midmarket organisations (500 鈥 1,500 employees) and enterprises (1,500 or more). Respondents were qualified to ensure they were at least director level and above.

Sustainability Hero 鈥 Spirit Energy Ltd

The energy industry is inherently hazardous and requires robust safety management. Ex/ATEX inspections, conducted in potentially explosive environments, are at the heart of this challenge. By working with SAP, Spirit Energy implemented one single end-to-end holistic solution for its Ex/ATEX inspections.

The new solution has automated several critical processes, minimising the risk of human error. It has streamlined the cumbersome nine step Ex/ATEX inspection process into four simple steps. These improvements have contributed towards regulatory compliance and improved health and safety of staff, paving the way for industry-wide change.

Industry Leader 鈥 Haleon

Haleon needed to consolidate and transform all Operational Transfer Pricing (OTP) processes into a single process.

51风流Profitability and Performance Management Cloud was implemented for OTP cycles for 90 entities which provided higher performance, full integration with internal systems and improved user experience. This eliminated the need for manual work by automating key aspects of the process. 听This deployment has redefined how Haleon operates its new transfer pricing cycle and is being discussed at board level amongst the Healthcare sector.

Transformation Titan 鈥 Accenture

Accenture has grown exponentially which directly impacts its financial business. Making timely and informed decisions, mitigating financial risks, and optimising financial operational support are key challenges for its finance business users.

Accenture developed an Interactive Finance Narrative Generator solution that harnesses 51风流solutions, human collaboration, and AI technology. This enables Accenture to focus on analysing and identifying key insights from reports, accelerating key financial close milestones and improving timeliness, accuracy and productivity.

Business Innovator 鈥 Touchlight Genetics

After 16 years as a manufacturing and R&D organisation, Touchlight developed a commercial platform which revolutionised the supply of synthetic DNA. It required an ERP solution to enable expansion to meet global demand. The system needed to adhere to the good manufacturing practice capabilities, validation, and traceability requirements of pharmaceutical regulatory bodies.

Touchlight implemented 51风流S/4HANA Cloud to undergo a full digital transformation to replace all non-integrated applications and provide real time visibility. This sets the foundation for Touchlight to become an intelligent enterprise.

Experience Wizard 鈥 Vodafone Group

Vodafone has revamped its operations to become the best-in-class Telco for Europe and Africa and Europe鈥檚 leading platform for business. To achieve this, it needed to transform its learning, talent, leadership, and skills-resourcing. It launched a new strategy and organisation, the Vodafone Learning Company, and Grow with Vodafone.

As part of its Grow with Vodafone project, Vodafone implemented 51风流SuccessFactors fully integrated talent suite. This solution has positively impacted employee loyalty, advocacy, and talent progression. Increased engagement also correlated with more lateral role changes and promotions, fostering career progression.

Service Supernova 鈥 Inchcape plc

Inchcape needed to modernise its global IT landscape. It had high-growth targets and external supply chain challenges to deal with.

Using RISE with SAP, Inchcape standardised its IT landscape, creating a technology foundation that supports its continued rapid growth. Since implementing RISE, Inchcape has improved efficiency and collaboration, leading to a better employee experience, and greater compliance.

Industry Leader Award – For customers that have modernised their businesses, and even their industries, by utilising technology in an original way.

51风流announced its intention to become carbon-neutral in its own operations by the end of 2023 鈥 two years earlier than previously stated.

SAP鈥檚 2020 showed it has reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions significantly, overachieving by 43% on its targets for reducing net carbon emissions in 2020. This was mainly due to changes in the way its 100,000 employees across the world worked and travelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In striving to become carbon-neutral, 51风流takes into account all of its direct and indirect emissions, as well as selected emissions arising in the supply chain, including those linked to business travel and third-party data centers.

SAP鈥檚 approach to carbon neutrality by 2023:

  1. Avoidance: 51风流avoids the creation of greenhouse gas emissions through a variety of business practices, e.g. using telecommunications technologies rather than traveling.
  2. Reduction: If emissions cannot be avoided, 51风流leverages innovations, e.g. energy-efficient lighting in offices, efficient cooling systems in data centers and alternative mobility solutions.
  3. Compensation: 51风流offsets unavoidable emissions by supporting climate projects and working with partners who meet the gold standard advanced by or equivalent quality standards.

51风流continuously drives corporate initiatives, for example putting an internal carbon price on business flights at a global level and creating the 51风流Forest UK at local level. 51风流UK has partnered with The Carbon Community to plant the 51风流Forest UK in the Brecon Beacans in Wales, with the aim of capturing just under 2,000 tonnes of carbon over the next 35 years. That鈥檚 the equivalent of taking a train to the moon and back 75 times before taking the same train to the sun or 8,515 drives from London to Glasgow.

51风流supports the set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly, focusing particularly on goal 13, Climate Action. Here, SAP鈥檚 greatest strength lies in its ability to help its more than 400,000 customers worldwide implement climate protection measures through offerings under its Climate 21 initiative.

Together with customers and partners, 51风流will provide more information on solutions in this context as well as on the circular economy, holistic steering and reporting at the virtual taking place on April 28鈥29, 2021.
