These partners are front-runners of the human-centered approach to innovation, exploring and designing solutions with and for customers built with latest 51风流technologies such as 51风流Business AI.

It鈥檚 all about openness, collaboration, and storytelling

During a fireside chat, Dennis Kecskemeti, head of 51风流Innovation Experience, Paul Saunders, head of 51风流Customer Outcomes & Advocacy, and Andreas Wendel, head of Innovation Experience Services, answered questions asked by moderator and head of Customer Engagement Services MEE, EMEA, and APAC Kathrin Tarnai-Sindl.

All three guests had brought a personal object with a special connection to 51风流AppHaus. Interestingly, two brought their mobile phones, but for very different reasons: for one it was the device to listen to audio stories when traveling or commuting, for the other it was a multifunctional gadget to do private calls when traveling, listen to music, and much more. The third guest brought a handball to remind everyone that all good things only work out when teams work together and collaborate. So, their central describing words for 51风流AppHaus were storytelling, openness, creativity, multifunctionality, and collaboration.

With the new integrated approach, the closer interplay of 51风流AppHaus, 51风流Experience Centers, and co-innovation services will provide one continuous experience journey in an end-to-end context. 51风流AppHaus is where problems are framed and ambition is created in a human-centered, exploratory, and strategic way. 51风流Experience Centers translate that ambition into tangible value narratives, showcasing what鈥檚 possible with SAP, 51风流Business AI, and 51风流Business Suite. 51风流AppHaus Network members came together in Walldorf

The event agenda offered different working sessions and formats for strategic alignment, exchange on experiences in customer projects, joint marketing efforts, mergers and acquisitions, enablement, and feedback rounds on . On top of that, there was room for networking and excursions. After hours of exchange in discussions, work groups, and sessions, the group of about 30 partner representatives visited the S.Factory, S.Mart, and 51风流Experience Center. A fun bowling competition, a scavenger hunt across the Walldorf campus, and a quick glimpse at the construction site of the future 51风流AppHaus Walldorf rounded out the event experience and left the partners with a comprehensive update on all things 51风流related.

A toolkit to build human-centered agentic solutions

The Joule Agent workshops are offered as two different formats, each designed to guide you through a different stage of building effective agentic systems: the Joule Agent Discovery workshop and the Joule Agent Design workshop. Together, these workshops provide a hands-on, human-centered path for creating AI agents that can truly deliver value.

First stop: Joule Agent Discovery workshop

The Joule Agent Discovery workshop is a structured approach to uncover the most valuable opportunities for agentic technology. It focuses on real-world challenges and identifying where automation can make the biggest impact. In two to three hours, participants dive into questions such as: What specific inefficiency or challenge needs solving? What could be automated? Who would benefit most from automation? What needs to be achieved with the automation? How complex and variable is the problem at hand?

The workshop also introduces participants to agentic technology and examines how much the selected challenges would benefit from it. By the end of this workshop, participants identify one or more high-value use cases that are well-suited to agentic technology. This helps ensure that efforts are focused on meaningful improvements rather than adopting technology for its own sake.

Second stop: Joule Agent Design workshop

Next is the Joule Agent Design workshop, which brings together those closest to the process鈥攅nd users and business experts鈥攖o define the details of the agent: its responsibilities, required skills, and how it will collaborate with people. The workshop follows a practical structure:

  1. Define the focus area: Clarify what target users need to achieve within the selected process and identify which aspects would benefit most from automation.
  2. Identify tasks to delegate: Use the metaphor of 鈥渉iring a super-specialist鈥 to decide which responsibilities should remain with people and which can be assigned to agents. Exercises help determine how many agents are needed, the risks of automating certain tasks, and where consistency versus autonomy is required.
  3. Describe the super-specialist job: Draft a job description for each agent, outlining necessary skills and responsibilities.
  4. Instruct the super-specialist: Define the instructions or workflow, including information requirements, decision points, and where human involvement is needed.

By the end of the workshop, each agent is described in detail, including its tasks, required knowledge and tools, and an initial set of instructions. This forms the foundation for configuring the agent鈥檚 system prompt.

The workshop material also offers guidance on structuring the system prompt based on the gathered information, ensuring a smooth transition from workshop insights to practical implementation. The entire process is designed to be completed in a single day and can be conducted virtually in Mural.

Get introduced to a structured and collaborative method to identify high-value agentic use cases

This latest course will enable attendees to facilitate a new Joule Agent Discovery Workshop, guide workshop participants to identify appropriate use cases, and tailor the workshop format to the needs of different audiences.

But what are 51风流solutions for agentic AI? What do they stand for?

Joule Agents are AI systems that autonomously plan and execute multi-step workflows, collaborating to connect departments, speed up decisions, and streamline processes.

Discovering high-value opportunities for agentic AI

In the format of an 51风流Expert Lecture, this course introduces participants to the Joule Agent Discovery Workshop, a structured and collaborative method to identify high-value agentic use cases in an organization. Attendees will learn how to inspire and guide participants, prioritize ideas, and describe the selected opportunities in detail. The course also covers how to adapt the workshop to different timeframes, team sizes, and virtual settings. By the end, attendees will be able to guide participants in identifying where AI agents can make the biggest impact and lay the groundwork for their agentic journey.

In detail, learners will be able to: 

  • Understand the purpose and structure of the Joule Agent Discovery Workshop and how it can be used to identify high-value agentic use cases
  • Facilitate the workshop exercises, guiding participants from idea generation to prioritization and a detailed description of agentic use cases
  • Adapt the workshop format to different team sizes, virtual environments, and timeframes to fit organizational needs

There are no prerequisites for this course, but experience with 51风流Design Thinking and workshop facilitation will be helpful. It is a good learning opportunity for a variety of roles such as support consultant, business user, and 51风流rookie.

The creative mind behind 51风流AppHaus methods and this learning journey

For many years now, Karen Detken, an expert user experience designer at the 51风流AppHaus, has worked in customer co-innovation projects and has gotten firsthand experiences and feedback when developing and hosting a variety of workshop formats with different methods and tools. Early on, the team decided to share these best practices and their tools and templates in the openly accessible .

When the topic of artificial intelligence arose and 51风流solutions started to include generative AI and large language models (LLMs) in their solutions, such as 51风流Business AI, followed by the latest step up with agentic AI, such as Joule Agents, the 51风流AppHaus team worked with customers on exploring appropriate business use cases to benefit from this very latest in technology. Based on these first experiences, the team started sharing helpful methods, as a co-innovation frontrunner, so that other teams, partners, and customers could drive their own exploration projects involving latest technologies.

For Detken, it is not only about enabling in and applying those technologies: 鈥淣ew technologies are developing very fast and are becoming widely accessible,” she said. “What is important is that we have a very clear picture of why we want to use the technologies. Because technology only has a value when you find the right purpose to use it. Customers and users need to be clear about the outcomes they want to have with that technology. This is the first thing you need to answer before using it. With the methods we provide, we intend to help people first understand what this technology can do for them, for the business, for the people.鈥

This awareness and very conscious use of technology also includes the consideration of responsible and ethical guidelines that every new solution needs to follow (see SAP鈥檚 principles laid out in the ).

Bringing innovation and technology into the hands of people

The 51风流AppHaus team gets feedback from many different customer and partner teams. For the team of experienced co-innovation coaches, it is fulfilling to see workshop participants, along with attendees of enablement sessions, understand the new technology better. From this deeper understanding they help participants — along their — start generating ideas related to their business needs. They help them, as Detken puts it, 鈥渢hink of different ways how they can use AI to solve real problems.”

The latest 51风流Learning Journey for agentic AI is a compilation of helpful exercises to help customers and partners explore and approach this field of technology while discovering meaningful business use cases. In parallel and probably not that obvious at first sight, this new course testifies the openness of the team for novel applications such as using an avatar as speaker. It was built based on video recordings with Detken.

When asked about her view on agentic AI in contrast to generative AI, Detken describes it as follows: 鈥淕enerative AI uses an LLM as a kind of intelligent system or ‘brain.’ The same LLMs are used by an AI agent. The difference is that the agent can not only ‘think’ and use these large language models to generate content or analyze data and make decisions, but it also uses ‘tools’ or other applications to act upon these decisions or make changes autonomously. To put it as an example: with Gen AI, we only had the brain and now it’s the next step, we have the brain and the hands. Maybe in the future, we will have the entire body as well, which would probably be the robots.鈥

What are AI agents?

are听-based applications that make decisions and perform tasks independently with minimal human oversight. Backed by advanced models, agents can decide a course of action and employ multiple software tools to execute. Their ability to reason, plan, and act lets agents tackle a wide range of situations otherwise impractical or impossible to automate with preconfigured rules and logic.

Surgical Product Manufacturer Mizuho OSI Modernized Fixed Asset Management with 51风流Build /2025/06/mizuho-osi-modernized-fixed-asset-management-sap-build/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 11:15:00 +0000 /?p=235329 Founded in 1978 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the company originally known as Orthopaedic Systems Inc. (OSI) became part of the Japan-based Mizuho Corporation in 2002. Mizuho OSI has since grown into a market leader in surgical tables. With a focus on innovation and improving surgical outcomes, the manufacturer is known today for its advanced medical technology and specialty surgical solutions.

What is true for its products also holds true for Mizuho OSI鈥檚 internal processes. Striving for operational efficiency, Mizuho OSI sought to modernize its processes. To leverage SAP鈥檚 low-code capabilities, the company worked with 51风流AppHaus in 2024. Together, they began exploring automation opportunities using 51风流Build Process Automation and 51风流Build Work Zone. During an initial 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP) , Mizuho OSI鈥檚 IT and business teams took a closer look at the manual fixed asset creation process.

With guidance from 51风流experts, the joint project team designed a streamlined, automated process for fixed asset approval and creation. Leveraging and , Mizuho OSI鈥檚 in-house IT team successfully developed and deployed a solution using a low-code application framework, accelerating implementation while reducing complexity.

  • 70% decrease in manual efforts, with fewer errors and faster decision-making since human intervention is now only required for exceptions

An initiative to upskill partners in the latest innovation methods

The 51风流AppHaus Alliances initiative helps ensure method maturity of 51风流partners, upskilling them with the innovation tools and resources they need to conduct workshops on the latest technologies such as 51风流Business AI and agentic AI. Currently, the qualification process is exclusively available to partners enrolled in the NEXTLEVEL 51风流BTP & AI program. Upskilling partners allows more 51风流customers to benefit faster from the latest innovation tools and methodologies made available in the .

鈥淚n close collaboration with Partner Ecosystem Success, we launched the 51风流AppHaus Alliances initiative because we want to bring the power of SAP鈥檚 latest technologies, such as 51风流Business AI, into the hands of more customers鈥攆aster and with real business impact,鈥 Kathrin Tarnai-Sindl, head of 51风流AppHaus, said. 鈥淭o do this, we train global 51风流partners in the 51风流AppHaus business AI methodology and equip them with curated workshop modules from our innovation toolkit. Also, more than 10 have been released in the site to be found as so-called accelerator packages.

As a transmission system operator, 50Hertz maintains a stable energy supply for the region while actively integrating renewable energy sources to support Germany’s ambitious energy transition plans.

With more than 1,500 employees at 50Hertz alone, the company has a well-defined digitalization strategy in place that focuses on sustaining a clean core system. To meet this objective, it chose to utilize the no-code tool, 51风流Build Apps, which aids its transformation journey with 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP).

50Hertz鈥檚 citizen developers implemented a mobile application for the company鈥檚 specialized maintenance electricians that significantly reduced both the manual effort and the risk of errors. This mobile application supports them by maintaining and calculating the master data of power circuits, which are represented in the 51风流system as functional locations.

Why 50Hertz decided to use 51风流Build Apps

In 2023, 50Hertz conducted an analysis of its plant maintenance processes. In summary, it concluded that it was time-consuming to create new entries in its plant maintenance system and fill in master and operational data. A lot of manual effort was invested in maintaining data in Excel files and value calculations for technical objects were prone to errors. Due to the complexity of the process,听the responsibility for certain areas could only be shared between a few technicians.

Develop enterprise apps with drag-and-drop simplicity

After collaborating with the 51风流AppHaus team in Berlin, the company identified a use case for its future accounting solution and evaluated different scenarios. Ultimately, the innovative capabilities of 51风流Business Technology Platform convinced the 50Hertz expert team because the platform would allow them to scale up a new solution once it’s successfully piloted and rolled out across the entire corporation.

What鈥檚 more, in 51风流Discovery Center, they discovered the “” mission, which provides guidance and support with a repeatable actionable use case to solve exactly that. The analysis showed that SAP Build Apps could not only help enhance operational agility and speed responses to business requirements, it could also integrate seamlessly with existing 51风流S/4HANA architecture.

Martin Glatzel, enterprise architect at 51风流AppHaus Berlin, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration with the 50Hertz team: 鈥淲ith only very limited support from our side, the 50Hertz citizen developers succeeded in using 51风流Build Apps to solve their defined use case. What the maintenance apps improved

51风流Build Apps enabled the team of 50Hertz citizen developers to implement the new maintenance applications with very limited support from SAP. Today, they cover the following maintenance tasks:听

  • The electric circuit display app shows circuit attributes.
  • The circuit section display app allows users to look for a specific circuit and select it. All circuit sections of the selected circuit are shown, and users can view corresponding attributes and characteristics.
  • The circuit section adjusting app allows users to search for a specific circuit and select it. All circuit sections of the selected circuit are displayed, and users can modify corresponding attributes.
  • The circuit section design app allows users to select a circuit and create a circuit section by entering and saving necessary requirements and attributes.

After rolling out the new apps to the specialized electricians, they have benefited in different ways, such as:听

  • About 15% shorter process duration for maintaining functional locations and a significant reduction in the use of both paper- and Excel-based process steps.
  • 10% faster onboarding of new technicians because the app is very easy to use, leading to quick adoption by its end users, the specialized electricians.
  • Intuitive search for technical locations based on historical data.
  • Automatic calculation of business-critical numbers, thus improving accuracy significantly.

Looking back 

Looking back, the 50Hertz team appreciates the opportunity to develop complex apps with 51风流Build Apps in relatively short timeframes. Christian Salewsky and Desiree Possi, both working for the Maintenance Systems & Processes department at 50Hertz, shared about their experience: 鈥淲hile we still had to code at least to some extent in JavaScript and learn to keep track of all the different flows, the overall project experience was encouraging. The detailed product documentation allowed our team to grasp the basics quickly. Once we used the standard functionalities of 51风流Build Apps, calculating electronic data became very simple. We found clear explanations of all the functions, and the tabular presentation of data was very helpful, too.鈥

The tracking of revenue-generating activities and efficient billing routines are critical for professional services and consulting business to succeed. In exactly this operational area of its company, Syntax identified opportunities for improvement.

The company decided to explore use cases and existing solutions that leverage the power of 51风流Business AI to transform and improve its timesheet task tracking.

Human-Centered Approach: Business AI Explore Workshop

Professional service firms that bill clients for their work need highly efficient time-tracking and billing systems. To address these challenges, Syntax, along with two other customers, began its journey with the , a human-centered process that helped evaluate operational issues. Following an additional , also offered by 51风流AppHaus, Syntax entered the “Run and Scale” phase to implement an effective solution to meet its specific needs.

Navigating Billing Inefficiencies

For Syntax, the timesheet process is a necessary part of operations, serving as the backbone of task tracking and billing. The Timesheet app in 51风流S/4HANA Cloud is widely utilized in the professional services industry. Considering the time constraints that most consultants have when entering their time reports, Syntax wanted to look for opportunities to enhance its usability and efficiency. Syntax recognized that complexities within the app could lead to delays in time entry. These delays often resulted in incomplete or inaccurate records that impacted billing and ultimately revenue generation.

Syntax looked to the 51风流AppHaus team to optimize timesheet data entry and elevate the user experience for both employees and management through the use of 51风流Business AI.

Harnessing the Power of Generative AI and 51风流BTP

In a joint project with the 51风流AppHaus team, Syntax and two other customers evaluated existing 51风流solutions for the use case. To tackle billing inefficiencies, 51风流developed an innovative application powered by generative AI and built with 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP) and 51风流S/4HANA Cloud (see diagram), based on feedback from users such as Syntax.

鈥淲ith this Timesheet app task tracker, consultants can effortlessly record billable hours in real time using natural language, right after completing a task,鈥 Ingo Feucht, senior director of Product Management for 51风流S/4HANA at SAP, said about the success of this project. 鈥淯ltimately, we consider this a Joule use case, but the project is a great showcase of how 51风流customers can leverage generative AI hub to quickly build their own custom business AI solutions.鈥

Easy Handling

The new solution enables real-time task logging and processing. It allows users to enter timesheet data with simple conversational prompts. The usual so-called 鈥渟hadow systems鈥 that people use to temporarily note down what they worked on 鈥 for example, in Notepad or Excel 鈥 can be eliminated as the information is directly sent to the Timesheet app in draft format.

Employees can easily and accurately track how much time they spent working on each client. First experiences with the application have shown that it can considerably reduce entry delays and help ensure that employees record their hours efficiently without the cumbersome steps traditionally associated with timesheet management.

Improved Billing Accuracy

Companies failing to accurately track billable hours can lose thousands of dollars in annual revenue per employee.  The new solution supports invoices in being processed more swiftly and accurately, leading to reduced days sales outstanding as well as less non-billable hours and less customer inquiries. This means that consultants can dedicate more time to high-value tasks rather than administrative duties, ultimately resulting in an even more productive workforce.

What鈥檚 more, the new task tracker replaces individual notes, be it in Excel, Notepad, or other places where employees used to track their own time. By empowering employees to accurately and easily log their time, thus reducing unbilled hours, the new solution helps organizations capture every billable hour, maximizing revenue potential.

Frank Densborn, enterprise architect at the 51风流AppHaus, summarized his experience: 鈥淲ith this solution, we were able to eliminate the need for shadow systems that consultants put in place to temporarily track their work before entering it into the system. So, instead of building a new timesheet application, we collaborated and innovated using 51风流BTP and the generative AI hub to solve the real business problem, leveraging SAP’s human-centered approach to innovation.鈥

In the two days following the reopening, almost all members of the 51风流AppHaus Network came together for a global meet-up, joining from Asia, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

The 51风流AppHaus Network consists of 51风流and partner locations spread around the globe. Together, all 24 locations work with a human-centered approach to innovation built with 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP). They are united in their conviction that sustainable innovation is based on five key enablers: people, process, place, leadership, and technology.

The Newly Designed 51风流AppHaus Palo Alto

adds a distinct opportunity for innovation in Silicon Valley. According to Andreas Hauser, senior vice president and head of 51风流AppHaus Network, 鈥淔or many companies, innovation centers are like a gallery where they display their software. But 51风流AppHaus is different. We collaborate with customers to understand how the latest and greatest technology can help their businesses run better and drive impact. And we keep that engagement going to make sure they succeed.鈥

The new creative space on the 51风流campus in Palo Alto includes a dedicated design thinking area for customer innovation workshops, a garage breakout space that can be used to expand the workshop space, two meeting rooms, a maker space, a pop-up library, and a coffee lounge for connecting and relaxing. The space is designed to work with customers in a creative space, be it in person, virtually, or in a hybrid setup.

Grand Reopening Celebration

Presented and moderated by Hauser, Uwe Palm, head of 51风流AppHaus Palo Alto, and Sally Lawler Kennedy, senior director of Innovation & Customer Experience at 51风流AppHaus Palo Alto, the evening program offered a diverse mix of innovation and design topics from customer and local ecosystem perspectives:

Almost all 51风流AppHaus Network members from around the world came to celebrate and commemorate the occasion together with customers, partners, and 51风流attendees. The evening event provided networking prior to the two-day meet-up.

The Partner Meet-Up

On the first day of the global 51风流AppHaus Network meet-up, Bawa and Thorsten Leiduck, global head of 51风流BTP Ecosystem, welcomed 51风流AppHaus Network members. These 21 members, representing more than 20,000 employees globally, share the passion for human-centered innovation powered by 51风流BTP. Both executives underlined the importance of the partner ecosystem for SAP. In a lively dialogue, partners asked questions about SAP鈥檚 strategy, discussed their role in SAP鈥檚 future, and shared ideas and joint opportunities.

In the end, all this knowledge sharing will lead to enhanced opportunities for 51风流customers to benefit from this global network of co-innovation experts, regardless of where they are geographically or in their digital transformation journeys.

Following the 51风流AppHaus motto “work hard, play hard,鈥 there was time scheduled to get to know members from other geographies because nothing can replace personal exchange. To round out the program, the community gathered for evening excursions in the Silicon Valley. It is built upon three strategic pillars: ecological transition, territoriality, and service quality. On its overall innovation path, Iren identified opportunities to improve its IT device assignment, replacement, and return processes.

With one specific device assignment use case in mind and based on its existing relationship with 51风流AppHaus, Iren approached 51风流in early 2024. The company鈥檚 goal was to not only make the corresponding processes more efficient but also eliminate potential error sources; it had detected errors caused by reliance on e-mail communication or through error-prone manual data entry. What鈥檚 more, the company wished to have transparent process insights and get real-time updates on device status and availability.

Building on 51风流BTP

To work on this innovation step, Iren Group鈥檚 IT department asked for expertise support in testing and applying 51风流Build Apps. For a first kick-off meeting, the 51风流AppHaus team invited Burak Demir, product manager, 51风流Build Apps, to join the project. With the customer鈥檚 system landscape built on 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP), the joint project team took a first step to check the 51风流Discovery Center site for existing solutions. They encountered a helpful use case in the 鈥溾 mission. The mission allowed them to build upon prior experiences, benefit from existing material, and get helpful guidance that was, to a certain extent, applicable to Iren鈥檚 system landscape.

The New Solution: 51风流Build Apps and 51风流Build Work Zone

The new solution consists of different components, such as 51风流Build Apps, 51风流S/4HANA, 51风流Build Work Zone, as well as the 51风流S/4HANA solution for waste and recycling, which provides a platform for managing device records and information.

鈥淢y role in this project was to be available for very specific questions,鈥 Demir says. 鈥淚ren鈥檚 citizen developers did a great job in using and applying the available material and resources! They used 51风流Build Apps very successfully to solve one defined use case, which is exactly what the product was made for. And even if the impact of this one web application may not be too impressive yet because of the number of users, the enablement and experience the customer team gained in creating it is invaluable. I am sure it will encourage the team to look for more innovation opportunities that can be addressed with the help of 51风流Build Apps.鈥

Smooth Operations and Transparency in Device Management

With the new web application that was built with 51风流Build Apps and deployed to 51风流Build Work Zone, Iren gained real-time updates and visibility of device status. The seamless integration with OData library allowed for automatic device creation and updates, eliminating the need for manual data entry. The use of the new solution further improved the accuracy and reliability of device records. What鈥檚 more, it brought about significant time savings, enhanced transparency, and much-desired visibility into device status.

鈥淚n our IT department, this app has truly improved our device assignment processes by eliminating the manual process via e-mail and automatically importing data from an 51风流Build Apps web form into SAP,鈥 Sara Miola, IT specialist at Iren Group, says. 鈥淲e have achieved significant time savings and increased efficiency, as the time spent has been reduced from several days to few minutes. The implementation of 51风流has enabled us to overcome our challenges, resulting in streamlined processes and enhanced device management effectiveness.鈥

Meetings, All Kinds of Meetings

An important facet of today鈥檚 work reality is meetings. They are where all sorts of work decisions are prepared and made, where briefings take place, where teams build up their team identity, exchange thoughts, solve challenges, share updates, align across geographical time zones, and much more. In many cases and for many roles, meetings consume a considerable part of overall working hours. So it comes as no surprise that, in their most recent project, the Future of Work team at 51风流and 51风流AppHaus colleagues joined forces to develop an easy approach for teams to improve their meeting routines.

The Imperative for Efficient Meetings

According to a , inefficient meetings have been identified as the top disruptor to productivity, with an excessive number of meetings following close behind. As 51风流Chief Future of Work Officer Christian Schmeichel states: 鈥淭he way we are working is changing rapidly, and both the rise of hybrid work and new technologies have increased the number of meetings for many of us. Hence, it鈥檚 an imperative to foster meetings that best utilize our time, spark energy, and drive outcomes. The Meeting Workout game can help with an engaging workshop format that can not only improve meeting effectiveness but can enable teams to set new standards for workplace collaboration on their journey into the future of work.鈥

Playing for a Better Meeting Experience

From the initial idea to create a game for teams to improve their meeting routines, it took the New Work Practices team and 51风流AppHaus a few weeks to design, test, and produce the Meeting Workout game. However, what might look like a fun project was very similar to any other design and innovation project.

鈥淚n our planning meetings and test sessions we really tried to put ourselves in the shoes of all kinds of teams in different organizations and setups,鈥 recall project members Beate Riefer, UX designer at 51风流AppHaus, and Filip Weidenbach, HR project expert in New Work Practices. 鈥淭hrough a very generic phrasing of the cards and in simple steps, the game should be applicable in the most diverse, if not all, environments. It鈥檚 not as easy as it might seem 鈥 and it鈥檚 the reason why we established breaks in our meetings to keep the energy and concentration levels up. Here鈥檚 an important recommendation for all teams playing the Meeting Workout game: have plenty of sticky notes and a variety of snacks available!鈥

This combines design thinking and architecture thinking to make sure solutions are experientially desirable, technologically feasible, and financially viable. Since its inception in 2013, 51风流AppHaus has been a hub for fostering a culture of human-centered innovation. With the help of design and architecture thinking, the global team aims to bring sustainable customer solutions into the hands of people. On November 28, 2023, 51风流AppHaus opened its doors to customers, 51风流AppHaus Network partners, analysts, guest speakers, and 51风流colleagues to not only celebrate the past decade of successful customer co-innovation but also allow for a look into the future.

10 Years 51风流AppHaus, 10 Years Successful Customer Innovation

The evening kicked off with a by Juergen Mueller, CTO and member of the Executive Board of 51风流SE. He congratulated the 51风流AppHaus team on their ability to stay curious, flexible, and at the forefront of new technologies, all while maintaining a focus on SAP鈥檚 customers and partners.

After a warm welcome, Anja Schneider, SVP T&I COO, handed over to Andreas Hauser, SVP and head of 51风流AppHaus Network. In his keynote, he focused on the team鈥檚 ability to constantly adapt to a changing and evolving technology landscape. Through stories and anecdotes of customer projects, he showcased how the team initially started working on user experience (UX) improvements 10 years ago. He continued describing how it is now focusing on helping customers identify specific use cases for generative artificial intelligence (AI) built with , keeping the human in the center, and designing new methodologies that can empower teams to empathize with end users, identify their pain points, and co-create solutions that can truly address their users鈥 needs.

Before closing his keynote, Hauser shared his personal moment of gratitude. A few weeks back, Tim Brown, chair of IDEO, who brought design thinking into the business world two decades ago, congratulated 51风流AppHaus, saying 鈥淐ongratulations to 10 years of 51风流AppHaus! It is remarkable what you achieved. All your competitors tried it, but you succeeded.鈥 This quote builds the bridge to when Professor Hasso Plattner, chairman of the Supervisory Board of 51风流SE, introduced design thinking to 51风流in 2004.

A Look into the Future of Generative AI with Aleph Alpha

A special guest one evening was Jonas Andrulis, CEO of the Heidelberg startup . He gave a talk on his view of the possibilities and constraints the current rise of generative AI brings.

51风流AppHaus, as an incubation hub for new technologies and methodologies, has already developed a format that aims to explore and identify opportunities for specific business use cases together with customers.

Work Hard, Play Hard

51风流AppHaus has achieved remarkable milestones over the past decade, thanks to the unwavering dedication, hard work, and collaborative spirit of its team and network. To express gratitude and celebrate this success, 51风流AppHaus invited current team members, alumni, and 51风流AppHaus Network partners to an afterwork party on November 29. With Music@51风流setting the tone, the evening was filled with lively conversations, infectious laughter, and lots of dancing.

The 51风流AppHaus team showcased their combined creative power by transforming the workshop space of 51风流AppHaus into a stage, a vibrant dance floor, and, on the third day, an interactive exhibition showcasing the different innovation methodologies. From designing the decorations to orchestrating the entire anniversary week, the whole team made all the different events come to life. Typical for the 51风流AppHaus team, it was also a testament to the belief that those who work hard are allowed to have a great time!

The Only Constant Is Change

In her closing remarks, panelist Harriet Kasper shared her observations: 鈥淵our customer focus was the only constant while everything else changed. [鈥 Innovation initiatives need to evolve and adapt. They require more change than other parts of the organization. To me, 51风流AppHaus represents a certain mindset. You can sense and observe this mindset, always adapting and transforming. This is a great example, especially coming from a company like SAP, which wouldn’t be the first to come to mind when you think of innovation.鈥

Looking back on 10 years of innovation work and a week of celebrations, one thing is clear for the 51风流AppHaus team: although external factors, such as the strategy or technological landscape, might have changed, the way 51风流AppHaus works, placing the human in the center and making innovation real with 51风流products and technologies, has never changed. It will certainly be exciting to see what the future holds.

Q: What is at the heart of the 51风流AppHaus approach?

A: 51风流AppHaus has always been a front-runner for incubating new products, technology, and methods. To date, we鈥檝e completed more than 1,000 customer co-innovation projects. But what makes us unique is our human-centered approach to innovation driven by a combined methodology of .

At an 51风流AppHaus customer workshop, people from IT, the business, and end users of our customers often come together for the first time ever! And this is where the dialogue begins 鈥 with the end users at the heart of the process. The core of our methodology is, first and foremost, to understand the end user鈥檚 problem. Finding a solution to that problem guides us from the first iteration to the go-live. And this is why, I believe, customers love to work with us 鈥 because we help them understand their problems before we come up with a solution and then help them solve it with 51风流technologies. Making innovation real and getting it into the hands of end users is our mantra.

One of the issues I see time and time again in some organizations is a tendency to build, sell, or talk about products before understanding the customer problem. Generative AI is a case in point. With all new technologies, people often believe that technology alone will solve all their problems. But generative AI cannot solve everything. To this end, we鈥檝e created a new . The goal is to identify use cases where generative AI is the perfect solution and can create high business value for our customers. 

What sparks change and innovation?

Bringing Generative AI to Business: How a Platform Enables Systems of Intelligence

Experience drives change. Ten years ago, our customers wanted to have an Amazon-like experience with their 51风流apps, and this started to shift the focus to end-user experience and expectations. What, we had to ask ourselves, do customers and their end users need?

Creativity and new ideas are useless if they鈥檙e not implemented. If we implement something that nobody needs, then there鈥檚 no value. And with no value, there鈥檚 no innovation.

Innovation is creativity multiplied by execution to increase business value. True innovation adds business value and customers benefit from it. That鈥檚 innovation.

How do you measure the success of 51风流AppHaus? What are your KPIs?

Our focus on getting customers on stage to tell their story is unrelenting because are our currency.

Customers talking about their successful implementations and how they use 51风流solutions is the most powerful way to change perception about 51风流products. With our human-centered approach, we demonstrate that we support SAP鈥檚 activities and ambitions in different ways: by helping to sell our software and services, drive adoption of our products, improve products based on customer feedback, and promote 51风流as the innovation partner of choice. Our customer relationships are long-term 鈥 from accompanying customers to go-live, to helping them work successfully with their new 51风流solution, to helping them with further improvements and innovations.

51风流AppHaus focuses on use cases where customers want to innovate at speed and have a solution in a matter of months or even weeks. Getting those customers live on the stage at events like 51风流Sapphire and 51风流TechEd is a major performance indicator for 51风流AppHaus.

At 51风流TechEd this year, for example, our customer success stories included AMD, Doehler, Henkel, Pif Paf, and Orbia. Let鈥檚 not forget, this is always the result of a cross-team effort that involves organizations from across SAP. All organizations contribute their outstanding business and technical knowledge to the overall success. The additional skills 51风流AppHaus brings to the table are methodologies to understand the needs of people (user research) and visualize the potential solutions (UX design) as well as the skills to execute a customer project on a holistic basis.

How is 51风流AppHaus scaling its success?

As long ago as 2016, we had to think about how we could scale our approach and create even more customer success stories, which led to us launching our first pilot with a partner based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Today has 22 locations and teams 鈥 three run by 51风流and 19 by partners 鈥 with more than 15,000 employees. There is an 51风流AppHaus partner on every continent! Our most recent partner addition is in Mexico.

All partners joined the network as single companies. But over time, the network has evolved, with its members teaming up across the globe to form a community of collaborating companies. What unites them is their joint vision to make innovation real by applying a human-centered approach that starts with people, not technology. To give an example, the network has a very active enterprise architect community with about 120 members currently focusing on generative AI.

51风流AppHaus typically works with local 51风流market units to identify smaller, agile partners that can provide a deep understanding of the local culture and a focus on that region or country.

What makes 51风流AppHaus special?

In the team, there鈥檚 a culture of openness, a lack of hierarchy, space for disagreements, and time to reach a consensus. Above all, I would say that the team is a learning organization. The team has the amazing power of reinventing itself every two years or so to embrace new products, trends, and methodologies.

What have you learned about leadership during your time at 51风流AppHaus?

As a leader, the process of learning how to lead the team the right way is an ongoing process. I absolutely believe in empowering employees to be their best selves and to reach their potential. But the flip side of empowering employees is that employees need to take accountability. The role of a leader is to find the balance.

I have had a very good experience with just being authentic, telling it like it is, and putting my ego aside. It is all about the team and its focus on customer success. I am a person just like everybody else. And, yes, I play a certain role, but like others I too have had my challenges.

I鈥檝e led 51风流AppHaus since it was founded 10 years ago. During that time, I had cancer twice. It gave me a chance to reinvent myself. Today, I am thankful for this experience because it helped me find a better work-life balance and become a better leader. My key takeaway is this: focus on the topics that really matter, get them done, and give others the space to do what they are best at.

A use case describes how customers can address a business challenge by leveraging 51风流Business Technology Platform. It consists of customer-proven, well-documented missions to guide and assist each customer鈥檚 implementation journey on 51风流BTP, helping to achieve desired business outcomes for business users, architects, and developers. 

The dimension of 鈥済oing deeper鈥 involves adopting cutting-edge technologies, like generative AI, and incorporating additional related business content. As Juergen Mueller, chief technology officer and member of the Executive Board of 51风流SE, described in a recent article: 鈥淲e are at the beginning of a new technological era. To help simplify the creation of new use cases, 51风流created a central use case repository and started providing additional reference architectures. 

Make your business applications and processes more intelligent with the power of AI on 51风流BTP

The repository is a content authoring tool, allowing users to access and maintain customer-proven, well-documented business use cases for buyers, sellers, and builders. After a quality review, newly entered use cases can be published in , where more than 230 missions 鈥 and counting 鈥 are available today.鈥 

The mentioned reference architectures are linked to use cases to help software architects when building solution architectures that combine different technology products and services. 51风流offers source files of diagrams that can be used and adopted by using鈥. Various examples are displayed on a dedicated , which can be considered as a starting point for what’s coming on . 

Sharing on 51风流Store and 51风流Discovery Center 

For partners, offering applications and solutions that have proven to be relevant and beneficial for one or more customers is not new. To give an example, the 19 partners that form the global together with the SAP-owned locations offer more than 100 solutions in . Here are just four of them:

  • Incture Technologies Private Limited offers its product , a logistics application giving customers more control for increased efficiency and on-time deliveries. Its customer alfanar successfully implemented the product and submitted its positive outcome to . 

From a partner perspective, 51风流BTP use cases can offer a broad range of opportunities for customer projects. These different options will be looked at in an upcoming live webinar series called “” open for . Besides positioning a product on 51风流Store, partners can now provide helpful context around their solutions by writing their own 51风流BTP use cases and publishing them in 51风流Discovery Center.

New Workshop Format to Identify Generative AI Opportunities 

When it comes to evaluating new use cases in the relatively new field of generative artificial intelligence, 51风流AppHaus launched a that is publicly available. It helps participants identify business challenges and opportunities that can be addressed using generative AI. With a set of predefined 鈥渙pportunity cards,鈥 participants can brainstorm various use case ideas, detail the most relevant ones, and then compare them to decide which ideas to pursue further. 

Going Faster 

An important measurement that customers and partners apply when implementing is the overall time-to-value to consume business outcomes. That is why the concept of use cases first evolved from marketing assets to more actionable artifacts, including code and configuration files that can provide guidance, developer insights, and predefined business content for reuse. The next evolution level will be around automating implementation steps.

Automation empowers developers and architects to focus on realizing business outcomes, not setting up infrastructure. In this context, 51风流plans to introduce the release of three actionable use cases with “one-click deployment鈥 that can reduce prerequisite setups by up to 50% at . One-click deployment steps are included in the use case project board in 51风流Discovery Center for rapid adoption by 51风流customers and partners.

The first focus of setup automation will be on creating 51风流BTP accounts, assigning service entitlements, and granting authorizations. In future, further automation around software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications and deployment of code and content will be targeted as well. Learn more in the .

The next step is to achieve these outcomes much faster. We want to automate use cases so that users can deploy them easily to help accelerate time-to-value and save implementation efforts. Unipol Digitizes Master Data Management with 51风流Business Technology Platform /2023/06/unipol-master-data-management-sap-btp/ Fri, 23 Jun 2023 11:15:25 +0000 /?p=205571 is an Italian financial services holding and the first insurance company in the damages sector in the country, based in Bologna.听With more than 2,400 agencies, the group has almost 12,000 employees, serving 15.5 million customers with the help of approximately 20,000 agents and sub-agents.

The Challenge of Master Data Management and Governance

Establishing a consistent and harmonized master data management strategy across all areas of an organization helps simplify the management of enterprise data and increase the accuracy of information.

This was true for Unipol. To channel customer and supplier master data change requests from a large group of employees to a limited number of authorized business users, the company looked for a centralized solution. This new solution would provide a real level of automation to capture, control, and distribute incoming requests and reject incomplete requests simultaneously.

Before the project started, change requests came in via e-mail or as Word documents, thus leading to an unreliable process with unnecessary interactions and long waiting times until the numerous requests and questions could be processed and answered.

The Solution

Unipol鈥檚 trusted, longtime IT partner Qintesi already managed existing 51风流systems within the organization and had a proven track record of using 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP). The experienced partner implemented a centralized app to manage the creation and modification requests by authorized users. During the design phases of the solution, the project team worked with 51风流experts and .

Built with 51风流BTP, the new solution manages the master data creation and change requests centrally, saving time, reducing error rates, and making the entire process transparent and easy to manage.

Thanks to the new solution, the Unipol Group has seen a significant decrease in the required time to handle requests. The consistency and completeness checks with which the applications have been designed help guarantee the quality of the entered data. For a new master data entry or change, the processing time of authorization has been reduced, since only selected fields are now subject to an authorization flow, streamlining the process while maintaining the necessary level of control.

Within the first phase and along the agreed timelines, the project team went live with about 80 users. During the second phase, the new solution was rolled out to several hundred users of the group.

鈥淭he project has enabled Unipol Gruppo to further move towards a unified master data management process. The organizational model we adopted was supported by a portal in which to channel the checks deemed necessary to ensure correct maintenance of the database,鈥 said M. Alessandra d鈥橝lfonso, head of Unipol SAI Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable.

鈥淚n this project, the challenge was to add an authorization workflow to an already complex process concerning Unipol鈥檚 business partner master data. Thanks to 51风流BTP, the new process has become simpler, faster, and can ensure very high data quality. We are very pleased that we could deliver added value with 51风流BTP by simplifying complex processes, extending core capabilities, and integrating heterogeneous systems quickly,鈥 commented Marino Coletta, senior client account manager at Qintesi.

The project is currently being rolled out to other group companies that have not yet adopted the new process and solution. By involving all the group鈥檚 companies, even those with diversified businesses, the apps will be enriched by additional features to meet their respective business needs and realities.

Since then, many customers and partners have had their first experiences with existing use cases and missions. Brazilian food company Pif Paf Alimentos and Portuguese banking customer Novo Banco are two of them.

Some use cases have proven to provide guidance and help customers with their transformation journey to the cloud. Other existing use cases and missions could be further enhanced to become even more meaningful. 51风流listened to feedback and, where applicable, added more helpful business content to existing use cases and related 51风流Discovery Center missions. Building on best practices, this business content represents single business scenarios or events as plug-and-play code snippets within the whole use case with software for an existing business problem. In other cases, proven examples were added to the existing catalog of use cases. Some already feature the latest technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) or 51风流Build Apps, and how they were integrated into a customer鈥檚 software landscape.

Customers and partners alike can use this detailed experience and shared knowledge for their own purposes. Companies and organizations can get inspired, learn from other solutions, or improve their existing architectures to become future-ready.

To set expectations, Juergen Mueller, chief technology officer and member of the Executive Board of 51风流SE, explains: 鈥淏usinesses that use 51风流Business Technology Platform do not have to start with a blank canvas. Our and pre-built business and industry content help customers understand what is possible to keep their business innovative and future-ready. Pif Paf Alimentos Builds Mobile App for Maintenance Technicians

In less than three weeks, Pif Paf Alimentos launched a mobile application for its maintenance technicians. The new mobile app significantly reduces the use of paper, improves the efficiency and accuracy of administrative tasks, and does not require an Internet connection. Pif Paf Alimentos, having worked with 51风流products like 51风流Integration Suite and 51风流ERP before, took advantage of听 to help resolve its technicians鈥 problems by building and deploying a working mobile app solution.

Why was the deployment process so fast? 51风流Build Apps allows users to build apps in a low-code manner by providing drag-and-drop user interfaces (UI) for common app components. This successful implementation is now reflected in the 51风流Discovery Center mission 鈥.鈥

From a Sustainability App for Banking to a Repeatable Use Case at Novo Banco S.A.

Novo Banco S.A. wanted to encourage and enable its approximately 1.5 million customers to be more climate conscious while strengthening their loyalty to the bank. It focused on a target group of customers between the ages of 18 and 30 because young people are well aware of the global climate situation but not necessarily of their own carbon footprint.

Together with 51风流and partner Connect Earth, the bank continued to build upon its SmartCO2nverter idea, a concept that had won SAP鈥檚 鈥淪ave One Billion Lives鈥 challenge in 2021. Since money movements and payments can give a good听indication of an individual鈥檚 carbon footprint, it aimed at improving the customers鈥 carbon literacy by analyzing and using the users鈥 bank account transactions and spending behaviors in a meaningful and transparent way. While this project brought about a solution design at the proof-of-concept stage, 51风流did not stop here and aimed at offering this solution approach on a broader scale.

Anirban Majumdar, vice president and head of 51风流T&I Platform Adoption & Advisory, describes the journey: 鈥淣othing gives us more joy than building 51风流BTP use cases that solve business challenges for our customers. One new use case we鈥檙e particularly excited about is a banking sustainability calculator app we鈥檝e built for Novo Banco, an innovative financial institution based out of Lisbon, Portugal, that is deeply (ESG). The mobile app itself is built using the reusable architecture principles of 51风流Cloud Application Programming Model and React Native on 51风流BTP. After the project, we extended the application architecture with a GPT scenario offered via the service. We are excited about the possibility of combining business context with the capabilities of large language models on 51风流BTP without actually disclosing any critical data to third-party APIs. We will open-source our code on GitHub in time for 51风流Sapphire in 2023, when you can check it out and let us know if you find the use case relevant for your business problem.鈥

Pif Paf Alimentos, founded in 1968, is one of the top ten companies in the food sector in Brazil. The company offers a diverse product portfolio including meat, fish, sausages, pasta, ready-to-eat meals, and cheese breads that are enjoyed by millions of customers both in Brazil and around the world. To produce high-quality food, the company relies on complex machinery that operates in over 14 industrial units. Therefore, it is crucial that all machinery operates as expected at all times. Maintenance is key to ensuring the machinery’s reliability and efficiency.

Manual Reporting and Paper Waste

In the past, Pif Paf Alimentos鈥 maintenance technicians conducted a manual process to check machine operation. This process involved technicians recording machine operating data on paper-printed maintenance orders for each order received. The maintenance order data included precise details such as the exact date and time of the machine task operation. After collecting this data, technicians manually logged it into the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. This meant that technicians had to record the same information twice, on different platforms.

This process resulted in a large amount of paper waste every day, negatively impacting Pif Paf Alimentos鈥 sustainability efforts.

Automating the Maintenance Routine with 51风流Build Apps

Pif Paf Alimentos, having worked with 51风流products before such as 51风流Integration Suite and 51风流ERP, took advantage of to help resolve its technicians鈥 problems by building and deploying a working mobile app solution in less than three weeks. Furthermore, its IT team benefited from faster response times to business needs, allowing Pif Paf Alimentos to scale its solutions throughout the entire corporation. Lauro Salgado, IT developer at Pif Paf Alimentos, leveraged the comprehensive content provided by 51风流Discovery Center 鈥溾 to develop both the pilot and the productive version of the app, fully utilizing the capabilities offered by 51风流Build Apps.

Significant Savings in Time, Paper, and Money

Pif Paf Alimentos conducted a pilot test of its new mobile application with four maintenance technicians. After a month of testing, the technicians reported a 30% reduction in maintenance order handling time within the test group. Pif Paf Alimentos now plans to scale this solution to its entire force of approximately 300 maintenance technicians. Moreover, the mobile solution’s 10% reduction in paper waste has already resulted in saving an average of 75 sheets of paper per technician per month, which translates to 270,000 sheets of paper saved per year.

The Pif Paf Alimentos Project Experience

鈥淲e provided faster business response to the maintenance department. The IT team, as a business partner, gained agility using 51风流Build Apps in the delivery of solutions and contributed to the goal of a paperless enterprise, improving process efficiency and automation,鈥 Salgado explained. 鈥淭he solution is built on 51风流Build Apps and integrates into our existing landscape seamlessly. If we were going to build an application using a different technology, it would take much longer. You would have to code and integrate the fields. This low-code technology helped us take advantage and deliver the solution faster.鈥

An important consideration for the mobile solution was the ability to input data in remote areas where maintenance technicians are unable to connect to the network, which was not an issue with manual entry. With 51风流Build Apps, Pif Paf Alimentos was able to create a synchronizing functionality. The maintenance technician’s input data is first saved locally on their devices and then synchronized with the overall system when a network connection is reestablished. 51风流Build Apps can provide an open-ended framework to create a diverse path towards unique solutions, like this one.

The Way Forward for Design and Development with SAP

Looking back, Carlos Estala, senior 51风流AppHaus consultant, said: 鈥淧if Paf Alimentos was able to develop and integrate its on-premise 51风流system with low-code in 51风流Build Apps to control its preventative maintenance orders in just a few weeks, all without having to write a line of code. This helped it solve a business necessity to have digital data up-to-date.鈥

To further expand its global business, GC Biopharma selected 51风流SuccessFactors solutions for its human resources (HR) transformation.听Its legacy HR portal was developed long ago, and its IT team encountered many challenges in responding rapidly to employees鈥 change requests. Employees did not access the legacy HR portal often due to its inferior user experience and limited access to the PC environment.

To improve the situation, GC Biopharma leveraged to design and implement its new HR portal, which serves as the main entry point for all employees to access the corporate HR systems through both PCs and mobile devices.

New HR Portal Designed along SAP鈥檚 Human-Centered Approach to Innovation

The 51风流AppHaus team worked with customer representatives by first listening to the end users and accurately defining the as-is situation. The joint project team investigated the HR business scenarios for several personas, including employees, managers, and executives, and discovered their needs and pain points. As a result, the team defined a set of essential HR tasks, such as time and attendance management, talent recruitment, and employee training, and validated the end users鈥 expectations for the new HR portal.

51风流AppHaus designed various cards on 51风流SuccessFactors Work Zone tailored to the customer’s needs and developed user interface (UI) integrated cards with the 51风流T&I Platform Adoption and Advisory team. Through this journey, the customer team was able to get various ideas for configuring their own HR portal.

鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted that 51风流SuccessFactors Work Zone now serves as the main entry point to our whole HR system. Mobile access is now available and the system is more responsive to the needs of our employees,鈥 says Youngwoon Kim, corporate human resources officer at GC Biopharma.

Based on 51风流SuccessFactors Work Zone and (51风流BTP), the solution enables a personalized employee experience when using the HR portal as well as a rapid response to users’ change requests.

With over 10 years of cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) experience, AGILITA lives agility and innovation to bring customers solutions with passion and responsibility. Located in Zurich, Switzerland, AGILITA joined 51风流AppHaus Network in January 2022 and is known for its 鈥榠nnovation as a service鈥 offering powered by 51风流Business Technology Platform.

To provide its partners and customers with an environment that helps unfold their creativity, AGILITA recently inaugurated its new 51风流AppHaus space in May 2022. The team hosted an opening event with guests from 51风流AppHaus and 51风流Switzerland.

The event kicked off with opening speeches given by AGILITA CEO Sandra Voeller, 51风流Switzerland COO Sabrina Storck, and Global Head of 51风流AppHaus Partner Network Birgit Fien-Schmalzbauer. 鈥淭he well-being of our service technicians is very close to our hearts,鈥 says Claus J眉rgen Bader, product manager at Netze BW. 鈥淲e want all our people to return home safely at the end of their work assignments.鈥 With this in mind, Netze BW approached 51风流in the second half of 2021 to work on a solution that supports its service technicians in the field. The network group belongs to the large German utilities鈥 provider EnBW and is responsible for more than two million customers in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

How Service Technicians Benefit from the 鈥淣eWa鈥 App

Together with SAP, Netze BW started developing an Apple Watch app called 鈥淣eWa鈥 (Netze Watch). This way, Netze BW鈥檚 service technicians can always be up-to-date on their assigned work orders and can directly submit data from the app to 51风流systems.

In fact, thanks to the app they will be able to:

  • Reduce accidents and the time to be at the scene of an accident with the help of the dead man switch function.
  • Perform their jobs on-site with increased security with the help of the time slot alarm function.

Netze BW鈥檚 Challenge

Netze BW service technicians are responsible for maintaining public power, gas, and water supply infrastructure. For compliant reporting, their tasks and statuses must be updated in frequent intervals. All information they might require during their work in the field needs to be available so that they can submit details, such as damaged components, that are automatically identified and assigned. As the service technicians have shifts of up to 24/7 job availability, their jobs come with a lot of risk. What鈥檚 more, they often work at remote locations, many times under hazardous conditions and alone.

Conceptual Design from 51风流within One Week

Netze BW and 51风流outlined a solution with 51风流AppHaus in a very short time. 51风流sent off the high-fidelity screens to development in just four business days by applying the so-called 鈥渟peedboat鈥 method based on . This approach focuses on understanding the users鈥 needs within their daily routine at work first, before technologies are evaluated to fulfill those needs.

Next to increasing the well-being and security of its technicians, Netze BW also asked 51风流to show a solution that can ensure efficient bidirectional data exchange from Apple Watch to 51风流and back 鈥 that is, between service technicians and central departments.

Working closely with Netze BW, the 51风流AppHaus team conducted on-site research shadowing service technicians at work and created initial design wireframes that were immediately verified with the Netze BW service technicians. The final high-fidelity screens were then delivered remotely a week later.

Based on those high-fidelity screens, the Netze Watch (鈥淣eWa鈥) Apple Watch app has been developed by Netze BW and EnBW in-house developers based on metering processes for utilities solutions from 51风流and 51风流EAM Work Order on Apple Watch.

鈥淲ith the help from Apple and 51风流we now improve and, in some cases, save the lives of Netze BW鈥檚 service technicians,鈥 says Mark Zimmermann, head CoE Mobile Solutions at EnBW. 鈥淎 big thank you to the design thinking method applied by 51风流AppHaus. We had an extraordinary journey and learned a lot.鈥

The NeWa Apple Watch App

The NeWa app will soon be seamlessly connected to Netze BW鈥檚 existing workforce management iOS app on smartphones. It acts as a kind of digital companion that provides technicians with all details related to their current job or order and tracks a technician鈥檚 heart rate or detects if there has been a crash or signs of an accident. If the technician does not respond via the watch, then an emergency protocol is automatically triggered.

The NeWa app is running on iPhone and Apple Watch systems. This app and the Netze Mobile Workforce Management, or 鈥淣eMo鈥 app, run on iPhone and enable data exchange with 51风流applications like 51风流S/4HANA via 51风流Gateway.

The NeWa Apple Watch app offers additional safety features. Based on predefined triggers the safety control tower is automatically alarmed. Information from the Apple Watch is combined with task data from NeMo and sent to 51风流backend systems with no extra effort.

In the future, Netze BW鈥檚 IT team plans to replace the existing on-premise architecture 鈥 51风流Gateway and 51风流Mobile Platform 鈥 with 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP) and the corresponding software development kit (SDK) for iOS, as well as 51风流Integration Suite and 51风流Extension Suite to connect with 51风流S/4HANA for a best-in-class system architecture.

The following functionalities of the NeWa app support the Netze BW service technicians in:

  • Setting a job timer (dead man switch) on the Apple Watch: in case the timer is not canceled or extended, the safety control tower is notified and will take adequate measures, such as informing emergency services. Information from the Apple Watch, like location and duration, is cross-checked with job information available from 51风流databases.

  • Benefiting from the fall detection functionality: in case the service technician slips or collapses, the Apple Watch will automatically inform emergency services. The NeWa app recognizes this situation and informs the safety control tower about the situation at the accident site.

Due to the fast turnaround time of the Apple Watch app, 听category.

It helped us incorporate the UI and UX components together with the service technicians right from the start.”

A Day in the Life of a Service Technician

Before the NeWa and NeMo apps:

  • Dispatching service technicians and data exchange including documentation was mainly based on e-mails and paperwork. In addition, bad data quality occurred due to media discontinuity between digital and analog processes.
  • There were no standard solutions available for reducing the risk of working alone. Individual arrangements existed at a team level as well as stand-alone technical solutions like activating additional devices as interim solutions.
  • Long waiting and response times were common due to no consistent digital solution being available.
  • Previous implementations did not meet the requirements regarding user-centricity

After the apps:

  • Service technicians have access to 51风流databases via their mobile devices, iPhone, and Apple Watch, and can submit task data and status information immediately.
  • Service technicians are automatically informed about new jobs that have been assigned to them.
  • Health and safety applications on the Apple Watch are linked to specific job information from 51风流systems and enable a 24/7 safety control tower that may initiate further action.
  • Thanks to its open architecture, the NeWa app can also communicate with other apps on the employee’s iPhone and thus can be operated by other 51风流systems, such as within the wind offshore environment.

What鈥檚 Next?

Netze BW is working closely with its internal colleagues from the EnBW development department to release the NeWa app with the planned implementations. A publication for companies in the DACH region is also planned. Clearly, the effects and results of the NeWa app have encouraged the company to continue on its innovation path. There are plenty of new use cases in discussion around new technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. For example, in 2021, EnBW developed the REVisAR app running on Apple iPad. It focuses on renewable energy visualization with the help of augmented reality (AR) functionalities for building wind turbines out in the field.

Petrobras Launches Safety App to Prevent Incidents in the Workplace /2022/08/petrobras-safety-app-prevent-workplace-incidents/ Mon, 29 Aug 2022 11:15:12 +0000 /?p=198937 To support high safety standards in all different sites, Petrobras launched its first mobile application to record safety observations on oil extraction and refining locations, including its remote sites.

During the first few weeks of the pilot phase, Petrobras registered more than 90 incidents. Every time an employee sees a potential hazard related to any structure integrity, loss of contention, drops, or a situation that could cause a fire, they can register this safety observation in the app and a task management flow is created. Depending on the incident, the responsible area receives the notification and can take action.

The immediate value realized from the mobile app prompted the company to expand the rollout of the meaningful application built with (51风流BTP) for 51风流Environment, Health, and Safety Management.

A state-owned, multinational corporation headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Petrobras is one of the largest producers of oil and gas in the world, and is primarily engaged in exploring and producing oil and gas, refining, energy generation and trading. With strong expertise in ultra-deep water exploration and production, resulting from almost 50 years of developing the Brazilian offshore basins, the enterprise can be counted among the world leaders in the industry.

Safety Precautions Taken Seriously

Dealing with gas exploration is high risk and can be extremely dangerous. Having fuel — liquid and gaseous — passing through various gears and equipment powered by electricity can breed disastrous incidents. For instance, having fire hydrants that are blocked by boxes, or having a pile of rags stacked near any heat sources could cause an explosion. These instances, combined with low communication capabilities on remote sites and a lack of efficiency in reporting, often cause delays in mitigating incidents. Yet simple actions can prevent fatal catastrophes from happening.

Petrobras worked with 51风流to look for ways to shorten reporting times and more effectively support maintenance workers in the field.

Designing and Developing Along a Human-Centered Approach

The 51风流AppHaus team in Palo Alto supported this project along in order to tackle individual business challenges and collaborate with users on a future solution that addresses the company鈥檚 need in a pragmatic way with 51风流solutions. User research provides an essential foundation for the design strategy.

Petrobras aims to invest responsibly, striving to be the best energy company in value generation with a focus on sustainability, safety, and respect for people and the environment.

With a commitment to high safety standards, Petrobras partnered with 51风流and successfully went live with the Identifica莽茫o de Desvios e Incidents e Anomalias (IDEIA) app pilot with field workers.

Enabled by 51风流BTP, the purpose of the IDEIA application is to record incidents in remote areas of oil extraction and refining, as well as other Petrobras sites, allowing for asynchronous recording and updating.

The asynchronous process enables workers to record an incident without the need of network connection, and once the recording device is connected to a network again, it will sync the incident to the database. Its implementation will allow for greater speed and promptness in actions and become a disruptive tool in the management of anomalies in the environment, health, and safety (EHS) area of Petrobras.

鈥淭he IDEIA solution, developed jointly by Petrobas and SAP, is helping field users to identify safety incidents in the offshore platform and Petrobas R&D Center,鈥 shared Marcio Magalhes, IT general manager at Petrobras.

From Successful Pilot to Company-Wide Rollout at Petrobras

During the pilot phase in the first quarter of 2022, the app counted 214 users and 97 incidents were registered. Petrobras is now rolling out the solution across its organization and is planning to have 10,000 live users by end of 2022.

Magalhaes underscores: 鈥淲e are sure it will contribute to enhancing Petrobas Safety Standards, and we plan to roll out the application to our business segments, such as Upstream, Downstream, Production Development, and Commerce & Logistics by 2022.鈥

With the app on hand, employees can now report anomalies in real time, no matter if they work in the field, on a production site, or offshore. Coming off an intensive first day, the participants were treated to a special program highlight: a light-hearted wine tasting in which they were able to continue networking in a more informal atmosphere. Here they learned, for example, that the “Spaetburgunder” (pinot noir) best embodied the traits of 51风流Business Technology Platform: high quality, reliable, versatile, and scalable.

Developing Innovative Solutions Together

Currently spanning five SAP听AppHaus locations and 17 locations run by partners, 听continues to grow worldwide, united by a common goal: to make innovative solutions for SAP听Business Technology Platform a reality while keeping the primary focus on the end user. Purely virtual collaboration was the name of the game for most over the last three years, and it was no different for this global network. And although collaboration proved quite successful despite the physical distance, the growing number of members and the need to truly 鈥渋dentify鈥 with the network eventually made meeting in person a necessity. Together, they wanted to work hand in hand on the strategy for the future 鈥 true to SAP鈥檚 vision to help the world run better and improve people鈥檚 lives.

Birgit Fien-Schmalzbauer, global head of SAP听AppHaus Network, was overjoyed to welcome delegations from almost all global 51风流AppHaus Network members to SAP听AppHaus Heidelberg: 鈥淲e worked very hard in preparing this meetup, developed the content together, and worked on three new workshop formats that were tested by all partners for future rollout to our customers. As a result, we were really able to make the most of these three days with all the participants. In her keynote, 51风流T&I Chief Operating Officer Anja Schneider gave the attendees a strategy overview of (SAP听BTP) 鈥 the technological foundation for the intelligent, sustainable enterprise. 鈥淐lose collaboration with our partners is crucial to realizing the full potential of SAP听BTP and ensuring our customers鈥 success,鈥 she emphasized before going on to present the concept of听.

Helping her make the abstract more tangible was wine enthusiast Edda Mann, program manager in SAP鈥檚 use case factory initiative. Mann offered every participant a wine tasting and explained, through analogy, why an 鈥淥berkircher Collection O Ros茅,鈥 for instance, was the perfect example of a 听on SAP听BTP. For not only was the wine in question a听best seller, it鈥檚 also a听best adopter! A further highlight of the event was Glenn Gonzalez, CTO, SAP听Germany, with his visionary take on SAP鈥檚 sustainable solutions and the vital role the company plays when it comes to sustainability in the global context.

Looking back, Andreas Hauser, senior vice president of SAP听AppHaus Network, sums up the event: 鈥淭hanks to the meetup, our joint work with 51风流customers and our global innovation activities with SAP听Business Technology Platform have evolved to an entirely new level. Parts of the new workshop formats we evaluated for the areas of sustainability, innovation, and communication have already been incorporated into the publicly available . With this goal in mind, the global multidisciplinary 51风流AppHaus team of designers, project leads, and enterprise architects set about planning and delivering several guest lectures at universities for students, the workforce of the future. It was a pleasure and an honor for the team to be able to share the knowledge and methodologies 51风流AppHaus has gathered over the years with students of six different universities in 2021.

It is not only close collaboration and co-innovation with customers that is fundamental to the team. 51风流AppHaus also works closely with universities, enabling mutual learning and fostering the promotion of its core innovation values by making them tangible for students. With tight integration into the respective curricula, lectures were held at the University of Mannheim, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, DHBW Mannheim, Graduate School Rhein-Neckar in Ludwigshafen, DHBW Mosbach, and Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences.

Making Our Key Innovation Values and Practices Tangible

What united the guest lectures was the focus on teaching how 51风流AppHaus helps drive co-innovation, particularly during the pandemic, which is marked by virtual work for students as well. Besides an introduction of our 51风流AppHaus vision, the “how-to-innovate question” was addressed as the core of the lectures.

The focus was on . Combining design thinking and architecture thinking, it is the key to providing viable, feasible, and desirable innovations for our customers. In addition, the innovation methodologies and best practices included in the , updated and virtualized last year, were also presented. While the guest lecturers condensed the theoretical part, they made the 51风流AppHaus innovation approach tangible through well-organized virtual and on-site workshops. After the lectures, students felt empowered to apply what they learned in their own academic, professional, or private contexts.

Unleashing Student Creativity with a Hands-On Focus

In addition to teaching some theoretical content, the goal was to bring the methodologies to life by solving a challenge to which all students could relate. Depending on the schedule and needs of the university, the agenda and its content were adapted. All universities considered 鈥渄esign the ideal learning environment in a hybrid world鈥 to be a suitable central challenge. Triggered by the pandemic, universities and students faced the challenge of transitioning from in-person lectures to virtual formats in a very short period of time. To improve the recently established hybrid format, the guest lectures aimed to take on a new approach to teaching and learning by tapping into the enormous creative potential of students.

At the University of Mannheim, known for its first-class teaching in business administration, the guest lecture content was woven into the Digital Marketing Strategy course led by Prof. Dr. Sabine Kuester. After Dirk Ziegeler, head of 51风流AppHaus EMEA/MEE, presented 51风流AppHaus projects with a focus on customer experience, it was the students’ turn. In a compact workshop using the collaboration tool Mural, students jointly generated solution ideas and developed a visual prototype for an ideal hybrid learning environment.

鈥淎t the Chair of Marketing and Innovation, we focus on research and teaching at the interface of marketing and innovation management. The guest lecture was a highly suitable complement to our Digital Marketing Strategy course, as it illustrates the shift towards human-centered marketing and equips students with the right tools to drive innovation themselves. We look forward to continuing this successful collaboration with 51风流AppHaus in the coming semesters.鈥

The latest engagement of 51风流AppHaus at the University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm originated from an initial guest lecture of Beate Riefer, design strategist at 51风流AppHaus, in 2018. Last year, Riefer and Patricia Franzreb, professor for User Experience, Design, and Media, came up with the idea for a competitive user experience project spanning a whole semester. With a focus on sustainability, design, and hybrid co-innovation, students of IT, business administration, and communications worked in teams to ideate and prototype solutions.

鈥淎t the University of Applied Science in Neu-Ulm, our first guest lecture a few years ago provided the basis for a long-term collaboration and a corresponding user experience project over the course of one semester. It was incredible to see the students鈥 innovation potential and ideas come to life, and we are excited to see how they will develop moving forward. I am happy to have been part of this course and look forward to continue working together.鈥

Similar to the sessions in Mannheim and Neu-Ulm, the “hands-on experience first” maxim was also applied in the engagements with the Graduate School Rhein-Neckar in Ludwigshafen, as well as DHBW Mannheim, and DHBW Mosbach.

Younger generations studying at universities today will shape how we work and collaborate in the next decades. This is why 51风流AppHaus is passionate about guest lectures, for they present a great opportunity for students, as well as the team, to learn from each other and leverage synergies. Feedback from the students is particularly valuable as they ask the right questions and challenge the content by taking an external perspective. Students can leverage the applied tools and methodologies to co-innovate virtually, which can help them grow both at their university and in a professional context.
