Each March, International Women’s Day is commemorated on 8 March, an apt moment to reflect on women’s participation in the technology sector. According to , women currently hold only 26.7% of tech-related jobs, and similarly, technology firms with more than 10,000 employees report women’s representation at 26.2%. Multinational software company 51风流(NYSE: ) is committed to equip women to reach their full potential through Three Zeros Commitment, one of which is Zero Inequality.听

From left to right: Helen Selvanathan, Fiza Ismail, and Sin Ting Lim

This year, 51风流was included in the and have won 42 awards globally for its diversity, equality, and inclusion (DE&I) efforts. In Malaysia, SAP鈥檚 workforce is represented by 45% women, with 55% being in leadership positions.

鈥淚t is imperative to create a positive environment that maintains equality and equity which 51风流embraces to create opportunity for women to grow. I am confident this year International Women’s Day can thrust this importance much further,鈥 said Saqib Sahab, Managing Director of 51风流Malaysia.

These efforts were also seen positively throughout 51风流Malaysia, especially from the perspectives of its women leaders: Helen Selvanathan, Sin Ting Lim, and Fiza Ismail who were able to build their careers within one of the world鈥檚 largest enterprise solutions providers. As part of this month鈥檚 celebration of International Women鈥檚 Day, they share their experience as women in technology.

Helen Selvanathan: Purpose to Succeed

Helen have had 25 years of experience in the IT world. She joined 51风流Asia Pacific & Japan in 2017. Having experiences in various role, she has demonstrated successful initiatives across Asia Pacific, Japan & Greater China during her tenure prior to SAP.听 She is currently leading the 51风流Business Women Network (BWN) SEA and driving impact through external engagement, showcasing 51风流as diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) leader. Outside of SAP, Helen likes to participate in external women development initiatives through NGOs and volunteers for impacted communities.听

As a leader in SAP, she finds challenges in getting everyone to take ownership of their responsibilities. Then, she admitted that seeing the big picture beyond daily task can at times prove challenging. However, she began to understand that everyone has their own minds and perspectives and tackles this by establishing an open communication.听

Helen has developed her confidence through immersing herself within the 51风流and technology community by taking opportunities as speakers and moderators for both internal and external events. Helen shares her keys for success, 鈥Set a purpose for what we can do passionately. Also, be persistent and persevere to support teamwork. And finally, stay patient for success to follow.鈥

Helen advised women who are currently pursuing career success to take ownership in their actions and responsibilities. This will help in the continuous self-improvement.

Fiza Ismail: Knowledge to Succeed

Fiza Ismail is the Public Sector and Enterprise (PS & Ent) Account Lead in 51风流Malaysia. Like many others, she is part of the 鈥榖oomerang鈥 community whereby when one having left SAP, one would likely find themselves rejoining 51风流years later. With her eighteen years of experience in the industry, she became knowledgeable with the Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Brunei markets. Outside of SAP, she likes to engage herself in charities.

The biggest challenge that she has faced so far was in bringing together the team to achieve common goals. 鈥I believe that confidence is really important as a leader. If you want to grow in your career, you will need to learn and do mistakes. The key part is not to repeat the same mistake again,鈥 she advised. She also added that thinking logically and strategically during the planning phase is key to success.

鈥淢y advice would be, to think logically, you must always see 2-3 steps ahead and most importantly not be afraid,鈥 Fiza confirmed.

Sin Ting Lim: Learn to Succeed

Sin Ting is the Key Account Executive for 51风流Malaysia and regards her strongest point being communications. Before she joined 51风流through 51风流Sales Academy, she had four years of experience in business banking. Sin Ting believes in always walking the extra mile throughout her ventures. This was acknowledged when she was recognized as 鈥榯he Southeast Asia Rookie of The Year 2022鈥. Outside of SAP, Sin Ting likes to learn more about the technology industry to understand better of her role.

Although the Tech industry is dominated by men, Sin Ting did not feel the same sentiment. By putting the perspective that everyone holds the same responsibilities, Sin Ting established her confidence. However, she noted that it is important for women to create leverage on the strength of empathy and being meticulous.

Having the mindset of 鈥榞lass half full鈥 can help to seek possibilities to make opportunities happen. Of course, not every opportunity is successful 鈥 there will be failures and success altogether. This is where the skill of perseverance and commitment is being tested. 鈥淚t is not over until it is over,鈥 she said. At her end, Sin Ting offers some advice on expressing the result of actionable item through credibility and visibility.

Helen, Fiza, and Sin Ting have talked about their own formulas in building their success with their own set of hurdles. For them, gaining confidence can be achieved through multiple opportunities and challenges that they have overcame. This is how they can climb into making their own success: persevering and making use of the inclusive 51风流environment.听

While each employee is encouraged to work in harmony with their own color, 51风流lets everyone become their best individual self. Not only that, but 51风流has made the effort to keep track with the D&EI through establishing employee benefits and learning tools, such as 51风流BWN, 51风流Next Gen4All, 51风流University Alliance. These efforts have yielded positive results within the environment 鈥 creating the 51风流family into an inclusive and harmonious community.

The National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) has called on local businesses to be proactive in making sustainability a core part of their business strategies.

PIKOM (CIO chapter) chairman Malik Murad Ali (left in pic) said that, done correctly, sustainability practices would ensure that early movers stand to develop core competencies that competitors will be hard-pressed to match.

鈥淭hat competitive advantage will stand them in good stead, and such practices would even serve as strategic growth drivers,鈥 Malik said.

鈥淏usinesses that adopt a sustainability mindset and embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices into corporate strategy and operations are better prepared and create value for all stakeholders, including themselves,鈥 he added.

Malik, who is also Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin)’s IT director, said that technology is key for successful sustainability practices, particularly within Mydin’s supply chain to ensure that only sustainable and responsible-produced goods are sourced.

鈥淭echnology has also proven to be the critical enabler for Mydin’s culture of innovation,鈥 he said.

鈥淭o us technology is not a cost but an investment for greater efficiencies and growth.鈥

He shared on how Mydin had pivoted to its e-commerce model and opened up a whole new revenue stream during the pandemic.

His e-commerce example, Mydin Express, has proven to be convenient e-commerce avenue for consumers.

鈥淭hey just need to select the store closest to them, shop online, place their order, receive confirmation via WhatsApp and the products would then be delivered to their house, or they could choose to self-pickup from store,鈥 he said.

He added the company appreciates the strategic relationship with solutions provider SAP, which has enabled Mydin’s compliance with ESG industry standards, effective inventory controls, warehouse management and recall features, all of which have contributed to Mydin’s strong growth throughout the years.

Meanwhile, 51风流head of cloud (Southeast Asia) Cynthia Quah (right in pic) said that businesses cannot afford to wait for government and regulatory action to embark on their sustainability journeys.

鈥淭he sooner businesses start embracing sustainability practices, the stronger standing and competitive advantage they will get in the market, and in the eyes of key stakeholders like the investors, customers and business partners,鈥 said Cynthia.

鈥淏usinesses can start small to identify areas where sustainability can be embedded and work on the overall roadmap,鈥 she added. 鈥淭hey then would start seeing the rewards of being more eco-friendly, winning the hearts of our stakeholders, and improving revenues and bottom lines.鈥

SAP鈥檚 focus on sustainability is part of the company鈥檚 50-year mission of helping the world run better and improving people’s lives by focusing on business processes.

According to a recent study by Oxford Economics and SAP, more work remains to be done to drive value from sustainability for businesses across Malaysia.

While 60 per cent of businesses do not think that it is difficult to be sustainable and profitable at the same time, just four per cent say they receive significant value from their sustainability strategies today, said the study.

“This may be because there remains a disconnect between sustainability plans and actions for many organisations. While six in ten (63%) of Malaysian businesses has a clearly communicated sustainability plan, only 23 per cent have incentivised leaders based on its success and only a third (33%) say their employees are active participants in their sustainability efforts,” said Cynthia.

鈥淧ublic, private and plural partnerships are quintessential to effect the required change for a green economy.

“Sustainability can be a key growth driver for recurring revenue streams, find new efficiencies, and build new business models based on low-emission, circular, and ultimately regenerative concepts to benefit both the organisation and for our society at large,鈥 Cynthia concluded.

KUALA LUMPUR — Yinson Holdings Berhad (Yinson) has embraced 51风流SuccessFactors to further enhance its human capital management (HCM) efforts, especially to attract and retain talent while upskilling employees.

Its Group HR Director Louisa Brady (right) said that its newly launched Global Human Resources Information System (HRIS) based on the 51风流SuccessFactors platform also forms part of the group’s ongoing digital transformation journey in its quest for greater productivity and operational efficiencies.

“The Employee Central Module within HRIS stores and manages employee data, hence aligning and integrating them through a single, unified solution for all our employees in the various fields,” she said.

Employee Central serves as the HR system of record uniting functions such as payroll and learning management.

“We have received positive internal feedback on the self-service functionalities, user-friendliness and would be expanding the system to also cover performance management, recruitment and onboarding, succession and compensation as part of our Global HRIS roadmap.”

“Our ultimate goal is to attract, develop and retain the best people for the benefit of stakeholders and customers,” she further said, adding that Yinson has an international geographical presence encompassing West Africa, the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia.

51风流SuccessFactors is a cloud-based HCM solution world-renowned for streamlining processes, winning at the recruitment and retention game, training and re-skilling the workforce, and capitalising on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence.

鈥淲ith the solution’s seamless, mobile-friendly user experiences and social collaboration capabilities, our employees are now empowered to access information anywhere, anytime – all in a single consolidated view,” said Louisa.

Meanwhile, 51风流Vice President and Head of Cloud (South East Asia) Cynthia Quah said that the solution accommodates changing workforce structure better than traditional, on-premise software.

“With the 51风流SuccessFactors Performance and Goals Management module, Yinson employees would be able to keep managers updated on activities they are working on, share real-time feedback with peers while capturing a live summary of achievements,” said Cynthia.

“Managers in turn can also access activities, achievements, and feedback to hold more effective performance check-ins with employees, even virtually, as the process can be conducted online anytime, anywhere.”

The recruitment module, in turn, is designed to provide a competitive edge in sourcing, engaging and hiring the right talent for the Bank.

“With line-of-site analytics to provide intelligence and guidance throughout the process, the module features a mobile-first career site by delivering a personalised experience on any device and embed social engagement for candidates’ feedback anywhere to create a welcoming and dynamic experience,” said Cynthia.

鈥淲hen companies transform their HCM practices and connect their people to the corporate purpose, they can then respond with agility to challenges that they face in a secure cloud environment,鈥 she added.

Yinson is today a global energy infrastructure and technology group involved in the areas of offshore production, renewables, green technologies and offshore marine.

SAP, meanwhile, is one of the world鈥檚 leading producers of software for the management of business processes, developing solutions that facilitate effective data processing and information flow across organisations.

KUALA LUMPUR 鈥 With over 60 years of experience, recently embarked on an employee experience transformation exercise powered by and .

Vice President of Group Human Resources Group Puven Nalatambi explained that the education industry is highly competitive where high-quality talent comes at a premium, and competition for the best people across all functions is fierce.

To reinforce our reputation as one of the top education providers in Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, we decided to redesign our human resources (HR) systems and processes to empower the team to deliver meaningful, engaging experiences that would help employees learn, grow, and become even more productive,” said Puven.

With its unsurpassed track record built up over the last six decades, it had earned the reputation for being the centre of excellence early years to postgraduate education in Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam.

“With Taylor鈥檚 University, the British University of Vietnam, Taylor鈥檚 College, and a network of successful international schools, we are constantly aiming to deliver educational excellence at every stage of our students鈥 journeys,” she added.

The facts certainly attest to her statement. According to its , Taylor鈥檚 University is the number one private university in South East Asia, for three consecutive years, and ranked #284 in the QS World University Rankings 2023.

Enter TEG鈥檚 Modern, Centralised Platform

By replacing its outdated HR information systems (HRIS) with a modern, centralised platform, TEG aimed to free its HR professionals from routine administrative tasks and enable them to focus on the employee experience.

“By creating an HR Shared Services Centre, HR operations would become more efficient and strategic. And by empowering employees with self-service functionality, TEG would create a dynamic, engaging workplace that would equip it for success over the next 50 years,” she said.

To help design and implement its new centralised HR platform and resulting experiences, TEG partnered with NTT Data, an 51风流partner, with over 30 years of experience with 51风流technology.

NTT Data made significant contributions by introducing leading practices from market leaders in the HR space, helping TEG understand the current trends and identify areas of its existing HR systems and processes to prioritise for improvement.

“Working with the 51风流SuccessFactors team and NTT Data, TEG was also able to localise the solutions for different markets to fulfil legal mandates and gain peace of mind. With the 51风流SuccessFactors and 51风流Concur solutions in place, TEG now has a powerful platform to help transform the employee experience,” said Puven.

51风流Vice President and Head of Cloud, South East Asia Cynthia Quah said that 51风流is committed to enable companies to be intelligent, sustainable enterprises.

鈥51风流brings together the solutions, technology and best practices needed to run integrated, digital business processes in the cloud,鈥 said Cynthia.

She describes 51风流SuccessFactors as a cloud based human experience management (HXM) solution world-renowned for streamlining processes, winning at the recruitment and retention game, training and re-skilling the workforce.

鈥51风流SuccessFactors also leverages advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning for the long-term benefit of organisations,鈥 added Cynthia.

51风流Concur, meanwhile, is one of the world鈥檚 leading brands for integrated travel and expense (T&E), and invoice management solutions.

IDC recently said in a study that , including helping finance teams align the dual priorities of improving control and visibility into administrative areas such as budgeting, forecasting, and T&E policy management while delivering a seamless experience to end users.

Puven said the benefits realised have been enormous and ‘priceless’.

For example, with TEG鈥檚 new recruiting and onboarding workflows, new hires receive information well in advance of their start date, including a personal email from their manager welcoming them to the organisation. Their goals are clearly set, they have access to the materials and resources they need, and they can be assigned a ‘buddy’ to help them find their feet, so they have a positive day-one experience.

“Feedback from new hires has been outstanding, helping to reinforce the perception of TEG as a top employer across the region. Using 51风流SuccessFactors HXM Suite in offering a one-stop solution for all our employees鈥 HR needs is a transformative step. It shows our people that we are putting their experience at the centre of everything we do,鈥 added Puven.

Surveys show that TEG staff are impressed with the new employee experience: 75% agree that HR systems are now more powerful, more transparent, and easier to use. There are numerous examples of tangible time savings and productivity gains: for example, processing leave approvals used to take 10 minutes per employee; now the process is instant.

“With a single centralised platform, manual data entry is reduced, significantly improving data quality. As a result, payroll errors are largely a thing of the past, ensuring that all staff get paid correctly and on time, including the right expenses,” Puven added.

“As we continue our digitalisation journey, our 51风流solutions are helping to empower us to embark on our mission to streamline our HR processes, improve staff retention, and strengthen our position as an employer of choice in the education sector,鈥 concluded Puven.

KUALA LUMPUR听The Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC) is urging businesses to transition into intelligent enterprises to better prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Its chief executive officer Daniel Bernbeck said intelligent technologies go a long way in elevating competitiveness within today’s digital economy.

“By becoming intelligent enterprises, businesses can ‘do more with less’, deliver best-in-class customer experience, build resilient supply chains while also inventing new business models and revenue streams,” said Bernbeck.

He was speaking at an event last Friday to commemorate SAP’s 30th year in Malaysia, and which was attended by Germany’s ambassador to Malaysia Dr Peter Blomeyer.

MGCC is the official representative of German industry and trade in Malaysia.

It is today the largest bilateral European business chamber in Malaysia and serves as a service partner for companies seeking to establish a market presence in the country.

Meanwhile, 51风流Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Hong Kok Cheong said the company would continue to be supportive of technology’s role for Malaysia to realise sustainable growth currently and in the years ahead.

“Our focus predominantly centres around upskilling and youth employment, together with local businesses readiness for Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) along with the transition to intelligent technologies on the cloud,” said Hong.

51风流Malaysia’s nation-building efforts include its collaboration with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) on the MyUniAlliance programme which provides training for around 3,000 students per year transcending some 18 higher learning institutes.

“51风流is today the world’s largest provider of enterprise application software with the broadest portfolio of modular and suite solutions available on premise, in the cloud and hybrid,” said Hong.

“We are in a strong position to help realise greater competitiveness for Malaysia especially in today’s era of 4IR,” added Hong.

The company’s Malaysian customers include DKSH Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd and IOI Corporation Bhd.

鈥淎s a result, our customers have the agility to respond faster to market changes, unlock new sources of growth and lead in their respective industries. These enterprises are also able to collect insights from customers, employees, products, and brands at every touch point, use powerful technology to sense opportunities, risks, and trends and turn this intelligence into action across every part of the business.鈥

The guest-of-honour at the event was Germany鈥檚 ambassador to Malaysia His Excellency Dr Peter Blomeyer.

Also present at the event was Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC) CEO Daniel Bernbeck who praised 51风流Malaysia for its efforts in empowering local businesses with latest technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced analytics and the internet-of-things.

鈥淭hese technologies go a long way in elevating competitiveness within today鈥檚 digital economy and they enable businesses to be better prepared for the Fourth Industrial Revolution,鈥 said Bernbeck.

He also encouraged local businesses to make the transition to becoming 鈥榠ntelligent enterprises鈥.

鈥淏y becoming intelligent enterprises, businesses can do more with less, deliver best-in-class customer experience, build resilient supply chains, while inventing new business models and revenue streams,鈥 added Bernbeck.

MGCC is the official representative of German industry and trade in Malaysia and currently has almost 400 members and is part of the global network of German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHK network) with 140 offices in 92 countries. It is today the largest bilateral European business chamber in Malaysia and serves as a service partner for companies seeking to establish a market presence here or to increase their involvement in Malaysia. It is supported by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action based on a resolution of the German parliament, the Bundestag.

51风流Malaysia鈥檚 Deep Alignment with 12MP

Meanwhile, Hong said that SAP鈥檚 mission in Malaysia is deeply aligned with the sustainability goal outlined within the 12th Malaysian Plan (or 鈥12MP鈥). Under the 12MP, the goal is for Malaysia to become carbon-neutral as early as 2050, with carbon pricing and carbon tax to be introduced.

鈥淎ll these aspects 鈥 social, environmental, and economic activities and performance 鈥 are interrelated with each aspect impacting the others. Hence, our efforts focus on helping to create a sustainable future for Malaysia, our customers, and society at large,鈥 said Hong.

He further explained that the circular economy is based on three principles driven by design: (1) eliminate waste and pollution, (2) circulate products and materials, and (3) regenerate nature.

鈥淒igital solutions enable businesses to embed circular practices across their operations, from designing products to help reduce waste from the outset, to tracking the lifecycle of the materials they use.

鈥淎t our end, SAP鈥檚 data-driven approach lets businesses embed sustainability comprehensively to gain actionable insights across the value chain to enable companies to transition to low-carbon business processes. This way, businesses can proactively identify the carbon impact at the beginning of the product lifecycle instead of reactively after a product has been produced.鈥
