鈥淭he entire world is on your shoulders… We have to deliver. This is the beginning of a new computing age, the beginning of a new industrial revolution. All 100% on SAP.鈥

Jensen Huang, CEO, NVIDIA

It鈥檚 the world鈥檚 company, building AI supercomputers made of more than 600,000 parts and delivering them to hundreds of the world鈥檚 most demanding customers. And, as NVIDIA鈥檚 CEO Jensen Huang noted, 鈥渋t鈥檚 all on SAP鈥.

The message from 51风流Sapphire 2024 in Orlando was clear. AI is not only the future, it is here today. And now it鈥檚 time to use it.

But amid the hustle and bustle of the event, there were lots of nuggets that you may have missed. So, with one eye on the benefits for Asia Pacific and Japan, here are my key learnings from Sapphire.

You can鈥檛 win in AI alone 鈥 you need a best-in-class ecosystem

The opportunity for AI in the Asia Pacific region is vast. According to , the Business AI market in APJ is expected to grow by more than 26% to $28 billion by 2027.

While the opportunity is huge, so are the choices for your business. That鈥檚 why 51风流is partnering with enterprise tech and industry leaders to push the limits of what generative AI can do for customers.

In addition to our expanded collaborations with听AWS听and Microsoft, we announced new large language models with Mistral AI, a partnership with Meta to use Llama 3 in 51风流Analytics Cloud, and an expansion of our partnership with Google Cloud to integrate Joule with Google Cloud鈥檚 Gemini AI assistant and Google Cloud Cortex Framework鈥檚 data foundation.

And that鈥檚 not all. As Mr Huang noted on-stage, 51风流and NVIDIA are working together on a听听to embed cutting-edge technologies into enterprise-ready business applications. That means Joule working with NVIDIA鈥檚 state-of-the-art AI models, integrating GenAI into 51风流and NVIDIA code generation, and simulating complex manufacturing products and configurations as industrial digital twins.

There鈥檚 no cookie cutter approach to making the most of Business AI. That鈥檚 why we believe the strength of our AI ecosystem means customers get the very best choices to drive AI benefits unique to their needs.

Keeping clean in the cloud

The benefits of AI can only really be achieved in the cloud. Best practice is what 51风流calls a 鈥榗lean core鈥 鈥 cloud-based ERP infrastructure that separate core applications from custom modifications. The result is a platform that can be easily and quickly upgraded with new capabilities, allowing agile innovation.

Takuya Sakai, general manager of the Digital Transformation Business Group at听, was clear about the benefits of simplification and a clean core. In 2019, Hitachi High-Tech had 9,000 add-ons across its 51风流systems, resulting in lots of custom code, errors, and large operational costs every year. The cost of change meant the company only completed a major update once in 12 years.

Moving to the cloud and a clean core solved these issues. With a new system based on S/4HANA Cloud Cloud, Hitachi High-Tech reduced its 9,000 add-ons to just 750, allowing it to easily upgrade its ERP core. 鈥淯pgrading our old ERP took about a year and a half from the planning stage,鈥 Sakai said. 鈥淗owever, with clean core, we can now do an upgrade every year in about 40 days.鈥

And that change means Hitachi High-Tech can plan to take advantage of new innovations more simply. 鈥淎n upgrade every year keeps the clean core fresh and means new features can be delivered to our business quickly, like AI or process automation,鈥 concluded Sakai.

You can spell sustainability without 鈥楨RP鈥欌 but you shouldn鈥檛

The benefits of 51风流innovation are not only financial. They drive real environmental value. And that鈥檚 critical in Asia, where we are responsible for more than half of the world鈥檚 emissions.

Sustainability and business performance are intrinsically linked. In fact, we believe businesses have to start treating carbon like money by using an accounting system for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data that is as auditable, transparent and reliable as their financial data.

That means integrating sustainability data into cloud ERP.

And we can then take advantage of the huge innovation provided by Business AI. AI takes complex sustainability tasks reliant on ESG and ERP data and makes them automated and auditable. It enables companies to boost operational efficiency, improve transparency around supply chain emissions, design and plan more effectively, and automate time-consuming tasks.

For example, at Sapphire we launched AI-enabled Emissions Factor Mapping, boosting the speed and accuracy of carbon footprint calculations. And we enabled the automatic generation of ESG reports through AI all based on the data within 51风流Sustainability Control Tower. This not only streamlines the reporting process but also helps ensure that the data is reliable and actionable, providing a clear picture of a company鈥檚 sustainability performance.

Beyond hype to real-world results through real-world AI

It鈥檚 easy to get carried away by AI hype and excitement. But what I saw at Sapphire was even more exciting 鈥 Business AI that makes a real difference to business problems.

Our opportunity across Asia is enormous. But it鈥檚 one we can make the most of, especially if we bring together the benefits of best-in-class ecosystems, a clean core, and a focus on sustainable innovation.

These businesses are looking to drive sustainable success, while embracing the new hybrid world of working and building a future-ready workforce.

Building the Future Workforce: NEC's 51风流SuccessFactors Journey to Redefine Employee Experience

Embracing the Global Vision

Keitaro Shigemasa, Head of Global IT, NEC

To be a global company, we need global people. Our ways of working need to turn, change, which led us to focus on managing HR and implementing .” Keitaro Shigemasa, Head of Global IT听

The pursuit of global expansion has become a cornerstone of NEC’s growth strategy. For Keitaro Shigemasa, Head of Global IT, the realization that global success hinges on adopting a global mindset and redefining work approaches was sobering. This led to a pioneering project focusing on managing Human Resources (HR) through the implementation of 51风流SuccessFactors, emphasizing the need for cohesive global HR management.

Martin O’Donnell, Global HR Digital Leader and 51风流SuccessFactors Program Director, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of anchoring any system implementation to a solid vision and strategy. NEC’s vision encompasses nurturing top talent, fostering cohesive teams regardless of geographic locations, and leveraging transformational change as a competitive advantage.

Transformative Challenges and Tangible Gains

“Transformation isn’t smooth sailing, but going in with eyes wide open ensures a more successful journey.” Martin O’Donnell, Global HR Digital Leader and 51风流SuccessFactors Program Director

Navigating a transformational journey spanning 40 countries presented its own challenges. Legal compliance, data privacy, complex system landscapes, and unexpected discoveries of disparate systems posed significant hurdles. However, strong project planning, sponsorship, and an adaptable mindset were instrumental in overcoming these setbacks.

O鈥橠onnell outlined the tangible benefits reaped from this transformative endeavor. Achieving an impressive 80-90% adoption rate post-release, the system streamlined everyday HR tasks for managers and employees, from holiday bookings to performance management. Anchored by critical business outcomes, the program’s success is measured through incremental improvements and enhanced capabilities. The financial benefits are already evident, with an expected annual saving exceeding a million dollars solely on license costs.

Evolving Partnerships and Future Outlook

“In this journey, the partnership 51风流has been more than a transaction; it鈥檚 been a transformative learning experience. We’re not just adopting solutions; we’re embracing a model that shapes our own global aspirations.” Keitaro Shigemasa, Head of Global IT, NEC

The recent 51风流SuccessFactors go-live in India and Singapore marked a significant milestone for NEC. Shigemasa reflected on the project’s evolution over the years, stressing the importance of partnership dynamics between NEC, SAP, and other delivery partners. Despite initial adjustments, the underlying robust relationship between NEC and 51风流facilitated a smoother implementation process. Leveraging SAP’s proven solutions enabled NEC to focus on delivering value and further reinforced their partnership.

Looking ahead, Shigemasa highlighted the need to view the go-live as a starting point rather than an endpoint. NEC’s vision entails further enhancements in employee experiences, connecting HR seamlessly with other IT processes, and continuous improvement. The NEC-51风流relationship transcends the role of a mere solution provider; it serves as a model for NEC’s aspirations of global prominence. Learning from SAP’s industry best practices, which included organizational setup, communication channels, and relationship dynamics helped to shape NEC’s understanding of global operations and deliver even greater value and business outcomes while unlocking the benefits of digital transformation.

NEC’s transformative journey embodies the essence of adaptability, collaboration, and perseverance. By embracing global perspectives, fostering strong partnerships, and aligning with a business strategic vision, NEC not only navigates transformational challenges but emerges as a leader of global excellence, ready to chart new horizons in the ever-evolving business landscape, and staying future-proof with a future-ready workforce.

Start-ups are driving more revenue and more success using digital transformation.

That’s according to a new report from 51风流India, in collaboration with Zinnov Digital, which found 80% of start-ups in the enterprise tech, health tech, retail, logistics, and autotech sectors have reported a substantial increase in revenue from cloud transformation.

The report, 鈥楧riving the next phase of sustainable growth for Indian Start-ups in 2023 and Beyond鈥, polled Indian 115 start-ups to reveal they will continue to invest in enterprise technology platforms, driven by their proven ability to deliver business outcomes and ROI. Some of the key benefits of enterprise applications include top-line acceleration and control on the bottom-line, quick revenue recognition, and handling complex billing based on contracts and consumption for differentiated service lines.

Announcing the findings of the survey,听Sanket Deodhar, Vice President- Digital Natives and Startups, 51风流India, said, 鈥淚ndian start-ups today require adequate tech infrastructure to help them diversify business, scaling up operations and acquisition and retention of the right talent. Mission-critical Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems on cloud are powerful enablers that provide valuable insights and direction to navigate any challenges, and accomplish their goals, including attracting investors, fair valuations, and retaining a competitive edge.鈥

Key findings from the report include:

The best-run start-ups run on a modern digital core

  • 74% of start-ups in India have reported direct benefits from implementing enterprise applications.
  • 24% of start-ups believe that achieving maturity in their business model, driven by robust technological capabilities and scalable operations, plays a crucial role in attracting investors.

  • 37% of the start-ups plan to increase their spending on enterprise applications by more than 15% in 2023.
  • 81% of start-ups cited automation and standardization of processes across divisions, with faster customizations as the primary benefit being derived by hosting enterprise applications on the cloud.
  • Adoption across the public cloud is set to grow by two times, whereas the private cloud promises around a 50% increase in adoption, indicating a high focus for start-ups to shift their workloads to the cloud.

Addressing challenges, start-ups stay resilient

  • Despite changeable market conditions, Indian start-ups continue to grow and there is no sign of investments slowing down for high-performing start-ups in the coming years.
  • More than 75% of start-ups point toward metrics such as revenue generated in the past year, product and service margins, and market share based on traction, for determining valuations.
  • 81% of start-ups reported customer sentiment as one of their biggest business concerns, indicating the importance of customer acquisition, experience, and servicing metrics.
  • 70% of respondents noted that partner evaluation and lack of in-house knowledge to manage remain the top challenges for start-ups while implementing enterprise application solutions.

Commenting on the study,听Sidhant Rastogi, Managing Partner at Zinnov Management Consulting, said, 鈥淚n 2022, Indian start-ups faced significant challenges due to market headwinds and reduced valuations. In 2023, we remain optimistic that investment in the right technology and organizational augmentation can help start-ups navigate the economic slowdown caused by the recession and other macroeconomic factors. Relocating can be a complex and emotive process, both for individuals and their families. From co-ordinating logistics to managing paperwork and ensuring a smooth transition, there can be many challenges.

A mobile life is an integral part of service for Australian Defence Force personnel. Military members and their families are routinely posted around the country and overseas. To ensure a smooth and efficient transition for thousands of defence personnel each year, the Australian Defence Force turns to global logistics provider, Toll Group.

Toll Group is one of the top 20 prime contractors to the Australian Defence Force and, in addition to relocation services, Toll鈥檚 Government and Defence business also provides expertise and support in the areas of Contingency and Sustainment across ports and remote base camps, Healthcare Logistics via the transportation of critical pharmaceutical supplies and vaccines, as well as performing thousands of rescues and retrievals missions each year using one of the largest aeromedical fleets in Australia.

鈥淲e knew that cybersecurity was critically important for our largest government clients and, to provide them with the confidence to do business with us, we needed to operate in a secure, hardened environment. As we embarked on this program, we wanted to do so in an accelerated manner.鈥

In partnership with IBM Consulting, Toll Group embarked on a modernisation and fortification strategy that would enable the business to remain nimble and secure, underpinned by SAP.

With Budget 2023, Singapore signals its continued investment to support the bedrock of its economy, which is (SMEs).

This year, Singapore businesses will continue to face tighter financial conditions and increasing costs. The Budget 2023 announcement emphasised the deepening of support for local enterprises in a bid to grow the economy, with the outlook for 2023 looking positive but slowing at about 2.5%.

Here are three areas that midsize companies will need to focus on to continue their advancement of opportunities.

Strengthening capabilities for innovation

With the extended Enterprise Financing Scheme, as well as the necessary skilling avenues and tax incentives, growing companies are able to transform themselves into becoming more .

Rising to meet the digital mandate will be paramount for businesses to stay relevant, resilient and thrive amidst global headwinds. grants agility, and scale, as well as the ability to realise cost savings in the long term and to unlock new revenue streams.

Ready-to-run processes such as cloud that are ready for anything to continuously bring out innovation into the business, while being easy to use for everyone enable different parts of the company to work together as growth occurs. Such solutions keep businesses moving forward to confidently tackle challenges regardless of markets or models.

The new Enterprise Innovation Scheme initiated by the government will also significantly reduce tax deductions for key activities within the innovation route. For Singapore to truly become a socio-economic and digital powerhouse, innovation is a critical pillar and foundation of a modern economy. Companies must treat innovation as innate, not just something in need when the seas are rough. The pace of innovation is dramatically accelerating. As a result, every company needs to tap the power of the collective to solve and scale.

One way would be to adopt a in order to accelerate development and automation in creating solutions for the organisation. Such a solution can increase productivity by reducing the amount of time needed for manual coding using visual processing and drag-and-drop capabilities on a low or no-code development platform. Delivering applications more quickly will free resources into other development initiatives and scaling up value creation, making it easier for midsized companies to expand.

Companies would also need to boost their productivity by looking to reskilling and upskilling their workforce to be future-ready.

Empowering a future-ready workforce

While many SMEs have already made inroads to future-proof their businesses during the pandemic, there is still much to be done to encourage organisations to empower their workforce to thrive and drive sustainable success. There remains an increased emphasis on 鈥 particularly for deep tech sectors that are the pillars of our innovation ecosystem.

In a similar fashion, 51风流is helping to equip mid-career jobseekers in boosting their employability for the Infocomm Technology, Supply Chain and Human Resources sectors. Besides mid-career jobseekers, enables the next generation to learn, research, and innovate with business applications for the Intelligent Enterprise and the green economy.

Balancing this by staying open to top foreign talent to complement our local workforce will put us in good stead to build a resilient and future-ready workforce for today鈥檚 digital economy, and tomorrow鈥檚 digital-first world.

In Singapore, the government will be appointing Jobs-Skills Integrators to ensure training will improve employment and earnings prospects post-training. These integrators will work with training providers to update existing training programmes or create new ones. For example, businesses can garner more counsel for securing an additional workforce, for workers to receive advice and training and for those who are searching for jobs to be connected with potential employers.

Driving sustainability as a business imperative

As Singapore embarks on its Green Plan, sustainability will be the key differentiator and business imperative for SMEs, where we will see entire business value chains looking to combat climate change, create a circular economy, and become more socially responsible.

and data will be critical for a green transition to net zero by 2050. In fact, accurate data and reporting for full transparency within organisation are determined to be the second most important factor in reducing carbon emissions locally.

Full trackability across business units ultimately benefits the bottom line 鈥 enabling businesses to achieve resilient and greener supply chains that improve productivity. Further investments in green skills are absolutely vital to Singapore鈥檚 transition towards a green and digital economy.

All for supporting the backbone of the local economy

With public and private support, SMEs in Singapore are well-positioned to not only overcome the mixed global economic outlook but also look to expand their businesses beyond Singapore. By leveraging the cloud, a dynamic and supportive ecosystem, companies can enable continuous innovation and scalability with speed and usability that is crucial to stay competitive in a digital-first world, GROW, thrive and play a vital role in the overall global economy.

BANGKOK, Thailand Companies are revisiting their budgets to increase their resilience against economic headwinds. Speaking at the Forum: Journey to Sustainability Development & Best Run Awards Ceremony鈥, chemical giants including Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL) and Namsiang Group (NSG) highlighted that cloud computing听and digital transformation will continue to be top investment priorities to fuel their business growth and build resilience through a potential economic downturn.

Indorama Ventures, based in Bangkok and listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, is one of the world鈥檚 leading integrated petrochemicals companies, with more than 26,000 employees located at 140 manufacturing sites in 35 countries. In 2021, IVL reported consolidated revenue of US$14.6 billion and a record profit. The company is also listed in the Dow Jones Emerging Markets and World Sustainability Indices (DJSI).

Mr.SK Agrawal, President and Program Director of Global ERP and Digital Transformation, Indorama Ventures said, In 2020, IVL embarked on a digital transformation journey with 51风流and Accenture to become a future-ready intelligent enterprise through IVL Olympus project, which aims to drive $600 million of savings by 2023. By replacing more than 70 IT systems across the organization with one integrated ERP platform, we will be able to derive synergistic benefits across our entities with a holistic view on data and information. The implementation of standard processes, master data and streamlined reporting across all business functions will help accelerate the integration of new acquisitions.

This year, IVL completed its acquisition of Brazil-based Oxiteno to become a leading global supplier in high-value surfactant markets. Through the acquisition, IVL extended its growth profile into highly attractive markets in Latin America and the U.S., with additional potential to expand business in Europe and Asia. During the year, IVL also extended its leading global PET packaging footprint into Vietnam.

A key focus for IVL is its Vision 2030 ambition to build its industry leadership in sustainability. 鈥淲ith our integrated business platform, we were able to increase recycled content in accordance with our sustainability goals while maintaining high package performance standards,鈥 added SK.

As the world鈥檚 biggest PET company, and the largest supplier of recycled PET resin used in beverage bottles, IVL spearheads the recycling of post-consumer PET packaging, and has processed over 70 billion post-consumer PET bottles since 2011. With a target of recycling 50 billion bottles per annum as well as achieving broader sustainability goals including carbon capture, the company has committed an investment of US$1.5 billion to achieve its sustainability goals.

鈥淓nterprise technology and digital transformation will continue to be an important business driver to help us achieve profitability, efficiency and sustainability, People, Platforms and Systems are the key focuses to invest for driving our future growth. We will continue to enhance a strong management information system and use advanced digital platform where we can access a real-time monitoring and reporting allowing us to be more analytical in decision making and building business plan.鈥

Namsiang Group (NSG), a leading chemical product distributor in ASEAN which runs a business to support the whole chemical supply chain industry including trading, manufacturing, labs service and retail also don鈥檛 expect budget cuts in technology area.

According to Mr. Chaiwat Klangvijit, Chief Operating Officer of Namsiang Group, digital transformation has enabled NSG to run our operations as normally as possible during the pandemic. In 2020, we partnered with 51风流and Netizen to embark on a comprehensive digital transformation journey for our 4 offices in Thailand. By operating on a reliable, one single core ERP platform through 51风流S/4HANA, we were able to support the whole chemical supply chain including trading, manufacturing, wholesales and retail as well as improve data financial analysis accuracy, productivity, speed of document management and significantly reduce the presence of repetitive and manual activities.鈥

鈥淒espite a looming downturn, digital technologies will be vital in helping our company pivot to find new ways to drive up revenue. We expect to increase our investment in digital technology and automatic process solutions to increase operational efficiency supporting our ASEAN market expansion in the future. The collaboration with 51风流and Netizen has proved that digital transformation provides a valuable opportunity for core business functions. NSG achieved significant results in productivity, speed of document management up to 40% and data financial analysis accuracy more 35%.鈥 added Chaiwat.

Indorama Ventures and Namsiang Group are the only companies from Thailand that demonstrated their digital transformational excellence and were listed as finalists of the for South East Asia. The Best Run Awards celebrate leading organizations in SEA that have emphasized new ways of thinking, adapted to the new norms and deployed technologies that set the benchmark for their industry to drive successful business transformation in today鈥檚 digital economy.

Atul Tuli, Managing Director of 51风流Indochina, said: 鈥Digital transformation is not a new imperative for business leaders in Thailand, but Covid-19 has made it a more urgent one, with firms looking to enhance their agility, speed, and data-driven decision-making. 51风流has been at the forefront of leading our customers through the pandemic and I look forward to empowering our Thai customers and enriching technology ecosystems for creating sustainable growth.鈥

As a boating enthusiast and scuba diver, I find peace whenever I return to the solitude of the sea. Whatever concerns occupy my mind while on land seem to dissipate into the endlessness of its calming waves. Yet experienced sailors and swimmers understand that, for all its allure, water holds just as much potential for turbulence as it does for tranquility.

Consider the听听by scientists of Sir Ernest Shackleton鈥檚听Endurance, which sank off the Antarctic coast in 1915. Fortunately for the explorer and his crew of 27, all managed to survive. As for the shipwreck, scientists found it remarkably intact amid the frigid depths of Earth鈥檚 southernmost seas. But the photographs capture one significant change with the passage of time: the sunken vessel, like the craggy ocean floor surrounding it, now teems with life. At a depth exceeding 3,000 meters, triple the distance sunlight can听听underwater, how do ecosystems manage to thrive? And what can businesses, sometimes facing inhospitable conditions of their own above sea level, learn from the enterprising plants and animals whose habitat eludes visibility?

To run at their best, businesses carry out multiple operational processes simultaneously, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk across them all. So too the complex networks of flora and fauna undersea. A lack of visibility presents challenges not only for aquatic ecosystems but for commercial ones as well, in the latter instance imperiling critical functions such as procurement and supply chain, logistics, and the maintenance of equipment connected by the Internet of Things (IoT). Business leaders increasingly look to the cloud for digital solutions to enhance visibility across all these functions. But they鈥檙e equally wise to gaze seaward as well for insights on instilling resilience. Disruption, after all, can leave wreckage at the bottom of an income statement just as it can at the bottom of an ocean.

At a time when听viral variants, recurrent lockdowns, and geopolitical tensions continue to roil supply chains and labor markets, businesses require 360-degree visibility across the interconnected operations of trading partners and solution providers to maintain continuity, foster collaboration, and keep promises made to customers. Yet many procurement and supply chain professionals possess only fragmentary information about isolated business processes, unable to gain a comprehensive view across the four walls of their organization, let alone those of their buyers and suppliers. Integrated digital platforms, however, lend businesses the expansive view and data-driven insights they need to anticipate rapid shifts in supply and demand and suggest available alternatives for the sourcing of raw materials and indirect goods.

Yet while cloud-based business networks are a contemporary innovation to extend visibility where it runs scarce, they are hardly without precedent. Deep-sea creatures have evolved their own ingenious techniques for sharpening their acuity to procure food. Consider the Pacific barreleye, whose translucent head enables the fish to听听in total darkness while stalking its next meal. Or the stout blacksmelt, whose oversized eyes听听from its otherwise modest frame. Or the scallop, whose 200 eyes peer behind mirror-like lenses, focusing in unison to听听the tiniest trace of light undiscernible to animals further down the food chain.

Back above the surface, businesses lie vulnerable to disruption even when supply chain visibility remains intact. When finished goods pile up in logjammed seaports, for example, manufacturers can offer little solace to customers denied on-time shipments. To ensure prompt delivery via sea, road, rail, or air, businesses require unimpeded visibility across all facets of logistics. They rely on cloud-based networks to track shipments in real time, collaborate with transportation partners, and secure alternatives when unforeseen contingencies thwart the best laid plans.

Here too, lessons emerge from the deep. Spanning distances exceeding anything comparable on land, the ocean organizes logistics through vast networks known collectively as the听. Life-sustaining elements, such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus, flow from the surface to the ocean floor and back again through intricate cycles of photosynthesis, decomposition, consumption, and sedimentation. The biological pump is also responsible for sending to the bottom of the sea much of the Earth鈥檚 excess carbon dioxide, which, if released, would oversaturate its atmosphere and overheat its surface. Through the resilient, never-ending exchange of resources essential to life both within and beyond its depths, the ocean maintains arguably the most elaborate logistical network ever devised.

Cloud-based business platforms operate on a planet-wide scale with unrivaled efficiency, too. Not only do they facilitate procurement, supply chains, and logistics between businesses and their trading partners, but in recent years they have begun to connect remote assets through the Internet of Things. This cloud-based capability, often called asset intelligence, has revolutionized the maintenance of equipment.

Suppose a utility operates a windmill farm offshore. All of the units require physical upkeep but accessing them can prove costly and dangerous. It can also prove futile if the windmill happens to be in perfect working order. But by linking together far-flung equipment virtually, businesses听听digital twins 鈥 in lieu of natural eyesight 鈥 to inspect these assets from afar. Such cloud-based asset intelligence networks aid the operations not only of energy companies, but of rural health clinics, security firms, and even soft drink purveyors. Think of all the distributed vending machines requiring replenishment.

But how, devoid of light, do the creepiest, crawliest critters inhabiting the deep sea manage to ascertain their surroundings? How do they gather reliable, actionable intelligence on 鈥渁sset鈥 and threat, friend and foe, near and far? Consider the tripod fish, which elegantly听听atop narrow, leg-like fins, poised to sense distant vibrations from potential prey. The beaked whale, meanwhile,听听echolocation, not unlike bats and submarines. By emitting short, high-frequency clicking sounds and waiting for them to bounce back, these mammals develop an acute awareness of their surroundings, often to the peril of less sensitive beasts who become breakfast. The vampire squid, meanwhile,听听bioluminescent fluid to lure hungry, if unsuspecting, targets. For their part, sharks and stingrays听听electric currents to map their surroundings and navigate using the Earth鈥檚 magnetic field.

As the听Endurance听shipwreck-turned-aquarium makes vivid, the abyss of the icy sea imposes formidable obstacles to survival in an environment prone to volatility and unforgiving to the unadaptable. Yet nature has innovated surprisingly durable solutions for illuminating the fundamental biological processes that nourish sprawling ecosystems undersea. The cloud does much the same for networks of businesses engaged in commerce amid drier, if similarly disruptive, conditions. In fact, the cloud and the ocean are beginning to converge on an increasingly sustainable future for all the Earth鈥檚 inhabitants. The visibility made possible by cloud-based networks holds the potential to听significantly reduce听the volume of plastics cluttering the sea and encumbering the creatures great and small who call it home. As digital technologies give rise to sustainable solutions, resilient ecosystems thrive even in the darkest corners on Earth.
