New Qualtrics research suggests consumer preference for digital here to stay

Mumbai, November 24, 2020: With India continuing to navigate through the pandemic, a new market study from š, a leader in customer experience and creator of the experience management category (XM), shows how COVID-19 has encouraged consumers to embrace digital channels in India. The study revealed that 82% of respondents are likely to rely on shopping online over the next 6 months.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, almost three-quarters of the respondents said they have increased the frequency they use online banking (73%) and purchased more online (70%). Shopping for groceries online also increased (64%). In contrast, 50% of respondents said the frequency at which they visit retailers has decreased. In further proof of how COVID-19 is changing the behaviours and preferences of consumers, 46% said it is likely they will pick up food from a restaurant rather than dining in.

Over the past 6 months, the number of people in India expecting COVID-19 to affect their day to day life for more than a year has almost tripled (17%, up from 6% in May 2020).

“After months of disruption, we are beginning to see new behaviors and preferences emerge that are likely to remain post-pandemic. There is no doubt that there has been a massive shift towards digital, making it critical for brands to ensure they are able to optimize the experience they deliver on their digital channels including mobile applications. Simultaneously, even though consumers in India are beginning to go back to some previous habits, high levels of ambiguity remain, meaning businesses must be able to understand and quickly respond to changing environments. Businesses can deal with this ambiguity using tools like to get an “always-on” and integrated understanding of their customer experience across touchpoints, equipping them with end-to-end insights to continually deliver superior customer experience.” said Harish Argarwal, Head of CX Strategy for Southeast Asia.

There are hints of things returning to the previous normal in the coming months, despite the majority of people (93%) still saying they are concerned by the pandemic. More than a third (41%) said they will visit the gym within the next 6 months, with going to the park (41%), regularly visiting a shopping mall (40%), and eating at a restaurant (40%) other behaviors likely to return in the same timeframe. Not surprisingly, travelling by air is the least likely behavior to return, with more than half saying it’s unlikely they’ll travel internationally (53%) by plane within the next 6 months.

Consumers have found themselves facing the new reality of digital disruption as they gravitate to ramp up their digital efforts seemingly overnight during the pandemic & lockdown phase.

šQualtrics surveyed 311 people in India (aged 18-65) in September 2020

Mumbai, Delhi, 29 September 2020: With the expansion of the scope for the Tax Collected at Source (TCS) provisions, under the Income Tax Act,  effective 1 October 2020,  a recent survey conducted by EY and 51ˇçÁ÷India asserts that corporate India is not entirely prepared to deal with various tax implications of the TCS provisions.

85% of respondents acknowledged that their current tax function framework is not completely geared up to comply with the new TCS regime.

The survey conducted in early September 2020 captures responses of over 110 corporate businesses across India to assess their readiness to implement TCS with respect to compliances, validations, and reconciliations with various reporting requirements.

Key insights from the survey include:

  • Updating systems and processes to comply with TCS

80% of the organizations anticipate issues around applicability and updating systems and processes as a significant challenge to comply with the new TCS regime.

  • Expected increase in manual intervention

81% recognized that reconciling data and ensuring accuracy due to TCS compliances will increase manual intervention for their tax teams.

  • IT systems not geared up

65% admitted that their current IT systems are not completely updated for the new TCS regime and will hence have to consider other alternatives

  • The inclination to adopt a digital solution

65% of the respondents admitted their organization requires a digital solution to automate the entire TCS compliance and reporting life cycle. Further, 70% revealed that the automated TCS platform should go beyond basic compliance by assisting in proactive reconciliations, data preparation for tax assessments, and tax credits matching.

“Given the intent of TCS provisions, leading organisations are looking for digital solutions which help to not just comply, but also proactively perform reconciliations from a tax audit readiness and internal audit perspective.”

– Rahul Patni, Digital Tax Leader, EY India

With an increasing thrust from the Government to focus on leveraging technology to ensure tax compliances and undertake tax risk assessments, the tax and finance function of business organizations need to adopt technology faster than ever.  Given EY and 51ˇçÁ÷India have been at the helm of this digital evolution in Tax, a strategic partnership has been formed to offer clients a seamless tax transformation journey.

As per the EY and 51ˇçÁ÷India survey findings, organizations are expecting to face significant challenges with respect to reconciliations, data, systems, processes, enables tax audit readiness, and most importantly compliance with the new TCS regime.

Recognizing the need for a digital fabric that is intelligent, intuitive, and integrated, EY has developed ‘śŮžą˛ľžą°Ő°äł§â€™ powered by SAP’s – an automated solution for TCS compliance. Being hosted on 51ˇçÁ÷Cloud Platform, making it scalable, secure, modular and integrated with customer’s 51ˇçÁ÷ERP.

“Our customers need to stay compliant with the evolving regulatory tax framework. As 51ˇçÁ÷is the financial system of record for majority of Indian enterprises, we responded swiftly to ensure required provisions form part of our solution offering. Together with EY, we deliver DigiTCS — a comprehensive solution powered by 51ˇçÁ÷Business Technology Platform. With this we will empower companies to adapt to the new Tax regime providing them ease of deployment, security and no disruption to their existing process and business.”

– Anand Raisinghani, Vice President, Platforms and Technologies

“Newly expanded TCS provisions are likely to expand the compliance burden for Crompton Greaves.  With our volumes, we were very clear that we need a Digital solution to not just comply, but also be ready with right quality data to support reconciliations and audits, and that’s where EY came in.”

–  V A Joseph, Vice President – Finance, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Limited

“The extension of our alliance with 51ˇçÁ÷to Direct Taxes is in sync with our vision of ‘One-Tax’ platform. We understand the clients’ need to do statutory reporting compliances using the same underlying data, having access to integrated dashboards and analytics, while, also being able to view tax compliances within their own 51ˇçÁ÷instance. Accordingly, while majority of the validations and interface with Government websites would be enabled through the 51ˇçÁ÷Cloud Platform, reports may also be pushed back to client systems, thereby creating a Tax ERP”

– Venkatesh Narayan, Tax Technology and Transformation leader

Founded in 1972, 51ˇçÁ÷makes enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations and is especially known for its ERP software.

For Kulmeet Bawa, the recently appointed President & Managing Director, 51ˇçÁ÷Indian subcontinent, his company is constantly at the centre of technology revolution. He was excited to come back to India and join a firm which is a market leader in enterprise application software and helping organisations fight the damaging effects of complexity, generate new opportunities for innovation and growth, and stay ahead of the competition.

Interestingly, India is clearly among the German multinational software corporation’s fastest growing market, wherein it caters to nearly 12,000 customers from diverse industries.

While having an e-chat with Dr. Annurag Batra, Editor-in-chief of BW Businessworld, Bawa affirmed, “As a nation and a geography I have always been attracted for the headroom in India to expand our operations with the kind of demographic dividend, millennial population, etc, that we have. When I look at the whole value proposition and that is what attracted me into the company.” He was talking during one of the episodes of BW Dialogue.

He further added, “In India, we have more than 11,700 customers and more than 80% are Small and Medium Business customers. We have launched the ‘Global Bharat programme’ for SMEs in order to enable them to be globally competitive.

We want to equip them with digital technologies and have adopted three big initiatives such as:

  1. How to provide them access to global marketplaces
  2. How do we digitally scale workforces and;
  3. How do we help them digitally transform businesses.

Founded in 1972, 51ˇçÁ÷makes enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations and is especially known for its ERP software. The company is headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-WĂźrttemberg, Germany with regional offices in 180 countries. The company has over 425,000 customers in over 180 countries and is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.

“It is very clear to me that customers (in India) are turning to SAP, intelligent enterprise to drive resilience, profitability and sustainability. We saw a huge demand for solutions that increase, what I call, resiliency. We saw a relevancy in our portfolio when it comes to commerce solutions, which I call a ‘blowout quarter’ in my parlance. We are doing stuff related to digital supply chain management also. We saw a lot of upside in those areas, even as we transcended the first few months of quarter,” Bawa further added.

When queried about its global R&D centre in Bangalore, he maintained that the lab in India is SAP’s largest outside Germany.

“We have (a total workforce of) about 13,500 of 51ˇçÁ÷sitting here In India and have a handful of engineers who work for 51ˇçÁ÷globally. It is the second largest establishment outside Europe. We are touching upon some of the amazing technologies and there are a lot of patents that come out of India. A lot of groundbreaking innovations happen within the Indian centre for our global markets. A whole lot of that leads to job creation in the country or touching of the innovation. The passion with which we are trying to grow the India business especially in times like Covid whether in terms of CSR, technology, innovation, is extraordinary,” stated Bawa.

It is interesting to note that Bawa was the Chief Operating Officer for Resulticks where he led the growth strategy and execution of go-to-market for the organization and was operating from Singapore. With cross functional experience of more than 25 years, he has served with the Indian Army in the Armored Corps, subsequently moving to the corporate side. He led the India & South Asia market for Adobe orchestrating businesses to digitally transform and drive excellence in customer experience, prior to that he was with Microsoft Corporation and Sun Microsystems, managing enterprise strategies across industries and portfolios.

BENGALURU — Kulmeet Bawa, the new president & MD of 51ˇçÁ÷India, said companies are showing a huge sense of urgency to digitise their operations following the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. There is, he said, a particularly big demand for solutions that would make the business more resilient – including solutions for e-commerce and to make the supply chain more digital.

“We had a blowout growth last quarter for Hybris, our . Everyone wants an e-commerce engine,” he said. Companies that could sell their products online weathered the pandemic and lockdowns much better than those who could not.

In the second quarter ended June, when most companies saw revenues decline, 51ˇçÁ÷globally saw a 2% increase in revenue. Cloud revenue, which is almost a third of total revenue, grew as much as 21%. Operating profit rose by 55%.

“More than ever, the pandemic has proven that digitalisation is no longer an option but a must-have to withstand challenging times and to achieve desired business outcomes,”

– Christian Klein, CEO of 51ˇçÁ÷SE

The $33-billion company is best known for its ERP product, but it has across a range of areas, including for management of customer relationships, supplier relationships, supply chain, product lifecycle, human capital, and expenses.

Bawa, appointed in July spent 12 years in the Indian army’s armored corps before he moved into the technology industry, He joined Sun Microsystems in 2004 as regional director for north & east India. He was there for six years. He then spent two years at Microsoft, and thereafter was MD for Adobe’s South Asia operations for over seven years. “Cloud is the way to go for business. Having seen cloud in Adobe, I can say that,” Bawa said. Adobe moved early to the cloud and the company – which provides software solutions for design, marketing and entertainment – has been having a phenomenal run. Its share price over the past few years has done better than most of the leading tech companies.

Bawa noted that cloud means more agility, no AMCs (annual maintenance contracts), no worries about upgrades and patches, it integrates better, and is future ready. He said SAP’s new customers and SMB customers are all moving to the cloud.

Existing customers are moving more slowly. “There are mindset issues, there are architectural nuances to be looked at, and then there’s the money they have already invested (in on-premise systems),” Bawa said. 51ˇçÁ÷India, he said, is one of the fastest growing markets for 51ˇçÁ÷globally It has over 11,700 customers here, about 80% of which are SMBs. In June, it launched what it calls the Global Bharat Programme, a platform that provides SMBs access to the global marketplace, provides skills to their workforce, and helps transform their businesses digitally.

Digital transformation was a line item on many business agendas long before COVID-19, but the pandemic catapulted it to the top of the priority list for virtually every organisation in the world.

German software giant 51ˇçÁ÷is increasingly focusing on digitally transforming micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India by helping them migrate to the cloud. In an interview, Kulmeet Bawa, president & managing director, 51ˇçÁ÷Indian subcontinent, talks about the firm’s priorities, focus on the MSME sector, and how it is helping customers adopt digital technologies.

Edited excerpts:

What are the key business priorities for 51ˇçÁ÷in India?

51ˇçÁ÷has 48 years of strong and rich history of innovation. In India, 51ˇçÁ÷has seen customers transition from the mainframe age, to the client server era, and now taking onto the cloud. Strategically, I believe 51ˇçÁ÷is at an inception point of becoming a true cloud company which is more critical in today’s context. I have experienced it and am a firm believer that cloud technologies are instrumental for businesses to make use of big data and to develop new business models.

The need to be digital and doing it in an agile way on cloud is imperative. Customer success is a top priority for us now more than ever. Our aim is to elevate customer experience and make it easier for them to not only have access to the right solutions but the business values that can help them run better. I would also like to add a lot of emphasis on the potential of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

How are you tapping into the SME segment?

51ˇçÁ÷is all set to support and enable the SME market by helping them embrace digitalization, focus on upskilling their workforce and enhancing overall business value. Our recently launched Global Bharat Program is designed to enable Indian MSMEs become globally competitive by equipping them with digital technologies. Approximately 80% of 51ˇçÁ÷India’s customers are SMEs. What we like to do is help SMEs maintain their vision, speed, and flexibility and we stand strong to support them in embracing digitization, focusing on upskilling their workforce and enhancing overall business value.

Global Bharat will to become future-ready while driving greater efficiencies by adopting three initiatives: gaining access to global marketplace, digitally skilling workforce, and digitally transforming businesses.

What’s the strategy to sail through the pandemic?

SAP’s business continuity has not been impacted. We were able to quickly identify trends impacting the marketplace such as supply backlogs, job posting reduction, increased e-commerce order volumes, etc. We shifted computing resources to cloud products to help our customers continue running and offer digital solutions. We have automated many of our processes and made them more intelligent. Remote operation across all functions has been a reality at 51ˇçÁ÷for many years.

How are you helping your customers go digital?

In good times and challenging times, all businesses have the same goal—they want to run at their best. They want to adapt to changing markets and business models. Digital transformation was a line item on many business agendas long before COVID-19, but the pandemic catapulted it to the top of the priority list for virtually every organization in the world. Helping customers succeed always starts with the customer, not technology.

51ˇçÁ÷first recommends embracing a mindset shift—around business outcomes rather than rapid adoption for the sake of innovation. Second, partnership, direction, and knowledge are key differentiators and game-changers, so choose the right partner. Last, customers need to adapt, stay agile, deliver quick time to value, and become integrated businesses.

What is 51ˇçÁ÷doing to develop digital skills in the country?

Through our Code Unnati corporate-to-citizen digital literacy and IT skills development initiative, we aim to foster digital inclusion in India. Since the launch in June 2017, Code Unnati has digitally educated 1.8 million citizens and trained 5,200 teachers across 1,500 centres. As part of the Global Bharat initiative, MSMEs will have access to Code Unnati’s 240+ courses on digital financial, soft skills, productivity tech that will digitally skill their blue-collared workforce, helping them adapt to the new working environments.

Dabur, a more than 120-year-old company, is a household name in India.

With a range of products from mosquito repellent to honey, it straddles a wide spectrum in its consumer offerings. With 14 manufacturing plants and more than 4000 employees and a market spread across Asia, North America, Europe and Africa, Dabur was straddled with unique challenges to streamline its manufacturing supply chain and vendor management systems. The management identified the need to refine its vendor management system ensuring quality check and uniformity in vendor sourcing.

Mr. Sumit Mukherjee, Vice-President and Head – Central Procurement at Dabur India Limited says, “When you work across countries, the challenge is in terms of negotiating with them at the same time, running transparent bids in different currencies, different time periods and different languages.” As sourcing was across continents, Dabur knew the time was ripe for re-assessing the entire process.

Dabur switched to to tackle the challenge of efficient and effective procurement processes. Through Ariba, buyers get the autonomy on managing the entire purchasing process which in turn helps build healthy, ethical supply chains. Also, it allows the suppliers to connect with the best-suited customers as well as efficiently scale existing relationships, giving them greater cash control along the way.

Consumer goods manufacturing supply chainTackling global manufacturing supply chain challenges with streamlined processes

Dabur benefitted in many ways after switching to . Average savings increased from 6% to 8% in the first few years, owing to a positive response from existing vendors. Centralized process management for all vendor related processes helped consolidate spend management and minimize maverick spending.

Within 3 years of implementation, there was a multifold increase in the negotiation speed. The negotiation time reduced from 3 days via offline processes to within an hour using Ariba’s online solutions. The process simplicity and agility also improved the vendor-side responsiveness. From just 11 events in 2002, today Dabur does more than 350 sourcing events yearly using Ariba sourcing on the cloud

The new process provided greater transparency leading to simpler compliance and audit management. Overall, the sourcing teams were left with more time in hand to work on strategic tasks, such as price forecasting. The integrated partnership was a success that promoted an overall culture of e-sourcing, leading to better resource and cost management of Dabur’s manufacturing supply chain and vendor management system.

“The idea in any organization is to give the sourcing tool in the hands of the buyer so that he can deal with it independently without any kind of assistance. All these criteria, Ariba met most seamlessly, and it still does,” says Mr. Mukherjee.

Gender doesn’t matter, your knowledge and experience does — says SAP’s Sindhu Gangadharan.

When Sindhu Gangadharan started her journey twenty years ago as a developer, women in technology were far and few and had to face many challenges. However, things have changed today, and the biggest contributing factor is that there are more women entering this field, bringing about a change and creating a lasting impact. Sindhu, in September 2019, took over as Managing Director of the 51ˇçÁ÷Labs in India. The R&D facility of SAP, the market leader in enterprise application software. Sindhu, the first female MD of 51ˇçÁ÷Labs India says that one of the core aspects of being a successful leader is to be an expert in your field.

“Since the beginning of my career, I’ve always believed in really understanding and knowing the smallest of detail about my work,” Sindhu says. “According to me, whichever field a person chooses, they should be really passionate about it; it doesn’t matter what their gender is. For me, technology has always been my passion and keeps me on my toes to know more,” she adds.

And naturally, she’s never felt the years go by. The continuous organizational support and encouragement played a big part in this. Sindhu throws light on this and says, “Undoubtedly, 51ˇçÁ÷is a great company to work for. And it also stems back into the cultural aspect — the open culture, the focus on learning, the focus on self-development and free-thinking”. She adds, “The company provides immense opportunities for professionals like me to grow both on the career front and the personal front, which helps me evolve holistically as an individual. The culture of gender positivity at 51ˇçÁ÷is exemplary. We encourage equal opportunity, irrespective of the gender, age, faith or orientation that one belongs to or chooses to adopt.”

Sindhu follows the belief that innovative ideas flourish when people embrace their differences and foster collaboration. As a leader, she encourages the entrepreneurial spirit that is within every employee and asks them to break away from silos and pursue an open innovation approach Sindhu highlighted some initiatives which defines 51ˇçÁ÷as an innovative technology leader – Entrepreneurial Sabbatical provided to employee to pursue their ambition, an in-house startup accelerator program called the 51ˇçÁ÷Startup Studio, a crowd-sourcing platform called 51ˇçÁ÷Blue, and the Intelligent Enterprise Summit aimed at bringing employees from different lines of business together to work on a common set of issues and challenges.

Drawing attention to the collaborative phase of innovation, Sindhu says, “Co-innovation was just the first step and over the years, it has evolved. Now we have moved to the next phase where we are co-locating with self-select customers, through co-location of our experts and our customers working hand in hand and in real time.” SAP’s Co-Innovation Lab (COIL), a global network of 51ˇçÁ÷innovation labs in 15 countries, helps customers and partners create high value, co-integrated business solutions, Sindhu points out. “We focused on identifying the transformational areas in India business, identifying those outcomes that are relevant and by partnering with them, we bring out the right product that will help them run intelligently and more successfully,” she adds.

being a Great Place to Work consecutively for two years is matter of great pride and a testament of its diverse culture, says Sindhu. Hence it makes it difficult for Sindhu to choose one aspect which she thinks is the best. “51ˇçÁ÷has brought so many difference experiences and given me a chance to interact with unique individuals as we operate out of more than 180 countries. It’s almost impossible for me to zero down on a single factor, there are so many of them. The culture, the people, the leaders, the innovation, the way we use tech for the larger benefit of humanity, our relentless drive toward sustainability, our products, solutions; the list is endless, and I can go on. All I can say is that I am fortunate to contribute to this wonderful organization and be a part of its growth story”, Sindhu concludes.

German tech giant 51ˇçÁ÷Labs, which recently won the Golden Peacock Award for its programme Code Unnati — a digital literacy and IT skills development initiative that aims at fostering digital inclusion — says its corporate social responsibility initiative in the remotest areas of North Karnataka will be empowering a lot of young women by providing them with employable skills.

The Girl Power Tech initiative, announced during the 51ˇçÁ÷Developer Kickoff Meet in Bengaluru, by Sindhu Gangadharan, MD, 51ˇçÁ÷Labs India, has an ambitious goal — not only to make women in remote parts of the state skill-ready to adjust in the IT space but also to close the loop between competency and employability.

“Girl power tech is going into some of the very remote areas within Karnataka,” Gangadharan says. “In some parts of northern Karnataka we’re trying to bring in women from underprivileged areas and not just give them the skills but also close the loop for them where they can come in (to the organisation) and experience for a period of eight weeks, what it means to work in a corporate environment like SAP,” she says. In some cases, this will be followed up by a role within the organization if there is a potential fit based on a particular skill set.

has given 51ˇçÁ÷the opportunity to leverage technology and talent and create sustainable ways in which it can give back and empower communities. To the company, these core programs also help in nation-building.

Code Unnati, she said, has touched more than one million adolescents and children. “More than 7000 youth have been trained in our industry skills, data science, machine learning, AI, and IoT,” she says.

Gangadharan says 51ˇçÁ÷Labs has picked the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) around equal opportunity and gender equality. Many of those goals and how the company aligns with them are listed here.

With Mahindra & Mahindra, 51ˇçÁ÷is also supporting the ‘Nanhi Kali,’ an initiative focused on the girl child. Since Girl Power Tech is a Human Resources initiative, Gandhadharan says it’s the employees who take the initiative of driving it. And that, according to her is also one of the best things about working at 51ˇçÁ÷Labs — the use of technology for the larger benefit of humanity.

From ancient times, milk and milk products have been an integral part of the Indian household. The mythological stories abound with children consuming milk, butter and other such stuff. Fittingly today, India is the largest producer of milk in the world accounting for nearly 20% of the world production.

This journey from a position of scarcity to the present abundance has been possible due to multiple players who have ensured the interests of farmers, retailers and consumers are always kept centre stage. Ananda Dairy, one of India’s top dairy producers has a pride of place in this list.

Starting with just one plant in 1989, Ananda, under founder Radhe Shyam Dixit now has 4 major plants and over 400 retail stores across India. Ananda’s vision is to grow at a minimum of 30% a year and open another 1000 retail stores across India by 2020. This breakneck speed of  growth is not possible without technology powering the entire system from procurement to billing. That’s where 51ˇçÁ÷came in.

“Nobody can grow without technology”, says founder Radhe Shyam Dixit and it is that belief which 51ˇçÁ÷nurtures by managing the entire end-to-end process, from the farmer level to inventory management to sales and distribution.

Milk is sourced from farmers and stored in tanks for diary production

The process starts at the procurement level. Ananda gets milk from 5000 different sources, all of which must be tested to ensure quality and deliver a fair price to farmers. 51ˇçÁ÷S/4HANA collects data from all the milk collection centres and uses it to value products and ensure timely payments to farmers. With 75 products and over 400 SKUs, manually keeping track of inventory was a huge challenge. Ananda uses 51ˇçÁ÷technology to streamline this process which eases planning on a daily basis and lets management focus on business decisions. 51ˇçÁ÷even helps Ananda calculate daily demand from different retail outlets by consolidating demand in 51ˇçÁ÷S/4HANA and dispatching vehicles directly to the given shop.

“We have adopted 51ˇçÁ÷technology for the growth factor. Each and everything is connected to SAP”, these words by Mr Dixit embodies the Ananda story of ambition and growth. And 51ˇçÁ÷is proud to be part of this journey.
