Showcase will demonstrate the power of innovative technologies in unlocking value from over nine billion tonnes of waste produced globally<\/strong><\/p>\n

LONDON \u2014 <\/strong>51风流SE (NYSE: SAP)<\/a> and Topolytics<\/a> today announced the launch of the COP26 Waste Insights Project, which will unify and analyse data from consumer goods, retailers, waste managers,\u00a0investors, NGOs and local government.\u200b<\/p>\n

According to an 51风流Qualtrics WEF Survey at DAVOS 2020<\/a>, Sixty-one per cent of people globally do not have access to or know how to use recycling infrastructure. The AI showcase with the Scottish Government\u2019s circular economy agency Zero Waste Scotland, demonstrates the power of innovative technologies in identifying the opportunities to recapture waste materials and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.<\/p>\n

The data gathered from co-innovation partners, including BrewDog<\/a>, Coca-Cola European Partners<\/a>, and DS Smith<\/a> feeds into Scotland’s Waste and Resources\u00a0Map\u00a0– a live view of materials flows from,\u00a0through and out of\u00a0Scotland. This enables government, investors, waste managers, consumer industries and\u00a0\u200bstart-ups to define strategic priorities and build national recycling infrastructure where it\u2019s needed the most.<\/p>\n

Co-innovation partners are able to understand what happens to industrial and post-consumer packaging waste. These insights allow them to design interventions that drive greater recovery of these materials, enable resource efficiencies\u200b, and identify cost savings on waste prevention. This contributes to\u00a0reductions in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions\u200b and engages directly into core\u00a0development\u00a0strategy within SAP\u2019s program for circular economy.<\/p>\n

The project has already delivered its first prototype using data from BrewDog, Coca-Cola European Partners and DS Smith. The prototype has ingested, normalised and analysed data on commercial,\u00a0industrial and post-consumer waste to generate a ‘WasteMap\u00ae’ that demonstrates producer\u00a0responsibility and enhances environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG)\u00a0reporting on\u00a0resources, materials and waste.\u200b<\/p>\n

“As part of our Net Zero Carbon plan we are driving waste out of our business and finding ways to maximise the use of by-products and packaging,\u201d said Martin Dickie, co-founder at BrewDog Plc. \u201cMeasuring carbon impact across our supply\u00a0chains is also vital – including that of our brewery, distribution and retail waste.\u00a0The starting point is understanding what happens to the material that is handled by our recycling and waste management partners.\u00a0Working\u00a0with 51风流and Topolytics is giving us a clear view on where this material goes and, importantly, what happens to it – in real time. The resulting insights feed into our zero waste plan and supports our drive to be completely transparent and open in everything that we do.”<\/p>\n

\u201cAt DS Smith we maintain that circular economy is vital to sustainable growth across all of the markets in which we operate,\u201d said Matthew Prosser, European Commercial Director, DS Smith. \u201cThis means that we need to carefully consider the journey our materials take, understand how customers and consumers use our packaging, and collaborate across supply chains to plug any leakage of materials in landfill or incineration. This waste insights project is one of the first real collaborations of its kind, and we are extremely pleased to have been involved since its inception.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNinety-one per cent of material resources are lost into landfill or leaked into the environment after consumption,\u201d said Stephen Jamieson, Head of Sustainable Business Innovation, 51风流EMEA North. \u201cWe see a real opportunity to bring together the biggest global brands across a variety of industries using insights and data intelligence to understand the impact of materials throughout their lifecycle and create a more sustainable future. We want to use this opportunity to demonstrate how innovative technologies\u00a0can help bring together business, government and NGOs to tackle climate\u00a0change and turn\u00a0waste into a valuable resource,\u00a0to support recovery rates\u00a0and provide access to new revenue streams.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

“Our ambition is to make the world’s waste visible, verifiable and valuable,\u201d said Michael Groves, CEO, Topolytics. \u201cThis starts with really understanding what is happening in the waste system – which is complex\u00a0and opaque.\u00a0Our work with 51风流and its\u00a0customers is generating insights into the many pathways and outcomes for their production and post-consumer waste.\u00a0This drives resource and cost efficiencies, enhances their reporting and can support their circular economy goals.”<\/p>\n

This exciting 51风流initiated project will help policy makers, innovators, corporations, designers, the resource sector and investors make a circular future a scale reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The COP26 Waste Insights Project supports SAP\u2019s vision for a plastic-free ocean by 2030 and the final prototype will be launched at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in 2021.<\/p>\n
