London, UK 鈥 April 12, 2024 鈥 51风流today announces the winners of its 2024 51风流Customer Success Awards for UKI, which celebrate the future-minded businesses that have harnessed 51风流technology to showcase new ways of thinking and set the benchmark for their industry, ultimately making the world run better.

The 2024 awards recognised the following organisations who are at the forefront of driving innovation, transformation, and environmental impact in today鈥檚 economy:

Sustainability Hero 鈥 Spirit Energy Ltd

The energy industry is inherently hazardous and requires robust safety management. Ex/ATEX inspections, conducted in potentially explosive environments, are at the heart of this challenge. By working with SAP, Spirit Energy implemented one single end-to-end holistic solution for its Ex/ATEX inspections.

The new solution has automated several critical processes, minimising the risk of human error. It has streamlined the cumbersome nine step Ex/ATEX inspection process into four simple steps. These improvements have contributed towards regulatory compliance and improved health and safety of staff, paving the way for industry-wide change.

Industry Leader 鈥 Haleon

Haleon needed to consolidate and transform all Operational Transfer Pricing (OTP) processes into a single process.

51风流Profitability and Performance Management Cloud was implemented for OTP cycles for 90 entities which provided higher performance, full integration with internal systems and improved user experience. This eliminated the need for manual work by automating key aspects of the process. 听This deployment has redefined how Haleon operates its new transfer pricing cycle and is being discussed at board level amongst the Healthcare sector.

Transformation Titan 鈥 Accenture

Accenture has grown exponentially which directly impacts its financial business. Making timely and informed decisions, mitigating financial risks, and optimising financial operational support are key challenges for its finance business users.

Accenture developed an Interactive Finance Narrative Generator solution that harnesses 51风流solutions, human collaboration, and AI technology. This enables Accenture to focus on analysing and identifying key insights from reports, accelerating key financial close milestones and improving timeliness, accuracy and productivity.

Business Innovator 鈥 Touchlight Genetics

After 16 years as a manufacturing and R&D organisation, Touchlight developed a commercial platform which revolutionised the supply of synthetic DNA. It required an ERP solution to enable expansion to meet global demand. The system needed to adhere to the good manufacturing practice capabilities, validation, and traceability requirements of pharmaceutical regulatory bodies.

Touchlight implemented 51风流S/4HANA Cloud to undergo a full digital transformation to replace all non-integrated applications and provide real time visibility. This sets the foundation for Touchlight to become an intelligent enterprise.

Experience Wizard 鈥 Vodafone Group

Vodafone has revamped its operations to become the best-in-class Telco for Europe and Africa and Europe鈥檚 leading platform for business. To achieve this, it needed to transform its learning, talent, leadership, and skills-resourcing. It launched a new strategy and organisation, the Vodafone Learning Company, and Grow with Vodafone.

As part of its Grow with Vodafone project, Vodafone implemented 51风流SuccessFactors fully integrated talent suite. This solution has positively impacted employee loyalty, advocacy, and talent progression. Increased engagement also correlated with more lateral role changes and promotions, fostering career progression.

Service Supernova 鈥 Inchcape plc

Inchcape needed to modernise its global IT landscape. It had high-growth targets and external supply chain challenges to deal with.

Using RISE with SAP, Inchcape standardised its IT landscape, creating a technology foundation that supports its continued rapid growth. Since implementing RISE, Inchcape has improved efficiency and collaboration, leading to a better employee experience, and greater compliance.

Ryan Poggi, Managing Director, 51风流UK & Ireland said: 鈥淥ur customers in the UKI have made incredible achievements this year. They are at the forefront of driving innovation, within their industries and on a global scale. In times of economic uncertainty, this collaboration and continued transformation enables them to build resilient businesses. Congratulations to our winners and finalists, and a big thank you to our judges for their continued support.鈥

Annual study by 51风流reveals over one third face a lack of funding

London – 听today unveils the results of its annual revealing that 8 in 10 (83%) UK leaders will maintain or increase their investment in sustainability action by 2026. Yet, despite these intentions, UK businesses continue to create their own barriers to environmental progress.

The global study of over 4700 business leaders, including over 300 from the UK, is the third edition of SAP鈥檚 annual Sustainability Study exploring the key motivations and challenges facing organisations looking to reduce environmental impact at scale.

It finds that while 31% of UK businesses say environmental action is already having a strong impact on revenue and profit opportunities, just 12% have assigned accountability for this work to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). While almost one-in-three (28%) have difficulty proving return on investment, making long-term progress harder to prove and sustain.

Sustainability as a Financial Incentive, Not Burden

In the past, measures to safeguard the planet may have been seen as just a moral or ethical obligation but the business mindset is evolving and today, UK businesses are increasingly seeing the long-term financial benefits. In fact, almost two-in-five (37%) report that revenue and profit opportunities are a leading motivator for sustainability action.

Against a backdrop of inflation, supply chain issues and a rising cost-of-living, UK leaders are steadfast in their environmental commitments as they view sustainability action as a means to offset economic uncertainty. Now, over half (57%) of UK leaders expect to see a positive financial return on their sustainability investments within the next five years.

Commenting on the research, Renaud Heyd, Chief Financial Officer, 51风流UKI said: 鈥淥ur study shows that it鈥檚 time that finance leaders realise that having a solid sustainability action plan makes business sense. It is imperative to attract funding from investors who need to make their portfolio greener, and to get a competitive advantage as customers demand sustainable products throughout the supply chain. As taking steps to improve the planet becomes more than just an ethical question, and UK leaders see long-term material gains, CFOs have the authority and expertise to champion the environmental roadmap.鈥

Building Their Own Sustainability Barriers

Yet, despite the link between environmental action and long-term revenue generation, SAP鈥檚 research shows that UK businesses are not involving finance leaders in taking sustainability actions and this is holding back progress.

Currently, just 5% of businesses have assigned responsibility for setting the strategic direction on sustainability action to their organisations CFO. Instead, it falls to an array of other leaders, including the Board of Directors (25%), CEOs (21%), Chief Sustainability Officers (15%) and Chief Operating Officers (10%). The study suggests this approach isn鈥檛 working to translate the economic value of sustainability progress across the business. As many as 38% of UK businesses cite funding issues as one of the top five barriers to taking sustainability action, while 20% cannot get the support from senior stakeholders to take concerted action.

Falling Into the Measurement Trap

Matters are made worse for UK businesses who continue to find that measurement is a stumbling block to progress, and ultimately economic returns.

Just 37% can track scope 1 emissions (greenhouse gas emissions produced directly) to a 鈥榮trong degree鈥, while 10% are not able to track scope 3 emissions (those produced indirectly across the supply chain) at all – causing many leaders to rely on estimates or 鈥榞ut feel鈥 when disclosing environmental impact. UK leaders are also struggling to adopt a standardised reporting framework, with over one third having no consistent methodology for calculating the environmental impact of their products.

This is being further exacerbated by the use of conflicting measurement methods for reporting. While leaders are overwhelmingly using direct measurement to track energy emissions (83%), resource availability (82%), fresh water availability (75%), solid waste (74%) and materials use (73%), they rely upon guesswork and estimates for air pollution (83%), nature loss (78%), supply chain impact (69%) and water pollution (60%). This is leading to almost nine in 10 (89%) reporting difficulty with gathering or analysing data for regulatory compliance, at a time when UK leaders are already having to navigate an assortment of changing regulations, taxes and levies associated with carbon footprint.

Stephen Jamieson, Global Head of Circular Economy Solutions, SAP said: 鈥淚n a climate where stricter regulations are now requiring businesses to disclose environmental impact, leaders who cannot accurately report this data risk allegations of greenwashing, and fines and reputational damage. Focusing on implementing a standardised reporting framework will ensure businesses are substantiating their green credentials, getting measurement right, and setting in motion steps that will directly lead to long-term impact. Organisations can use this data to redesign products, reuse materials, reduce waste and regenerate natural systems across the supply chain 鈥 in effect, powering the circular economy.

鈥淥ur portfolio means we are well-equipped to support businesses and ensure they are in the best possible position to navigate these challenges in the years ahead. This will allow leaders to unlock further investment, reap the financial rewards of taking sustainability action, comply with changing regulatory requirements, and reach net zero in the future.鈥

Commenting on the research, Edward Manderson, Lecturer in Environmental Economics at the University of Manchester, said: 鈥淭he connection between sustainability action and financial performance will play a critical role in shaping environmental progress in the future. Over the last few years, academic literature has shown that firms benefit financially from sustainability measures, and SAP鈥檚 research demonstrates that this is indeed a reality for businesses who are looking to recover fast from the pandemic environment. As this research shows, business strategy and sustainability action are now so intertwined that there is simply no excuse for organisations if they fail to address shortcomings in their environmental performance and enact meaningful change.鈥

Gamification is everywhere. Most apps on smartphones have a gamification element, from education tools such as Duolingo to fitness apps like Strava. These apply game thinking and mechanics, such as points and leader board systems, in a non-game context.

Gamification is also becoming more popular amongst our customers and partners, and 51风流is using it in both a pre and post-sales context to improve return on investment, data quality, timeliness, and learning.

Here are some of the exciting ways that we’ve used gamification to drive engagement and differentiate our sales experience from our competitors.

1- Creating Immersive Virtual Reality Experiences to Engage Users

In preparation for the CWS Summit Europe, an event aimed at Contingent Workforce Professionals, the 51风流UKI Innovations team was tasked with creating an immersive experience to showcase how 51风流technology can have a positive impact on the future of work. They used virtual reality (VR) technology to produce a simulated space environment.

The VR Experience took users on three immersive journeys through different worlds. New 51风流UI World showcased SAP’s new user interface, eliminating text heavy programs. The Launch of 51风流Learning World gave participants the opportunity to better understand how to recruit, employ and manage a strong workforce, and the Future of Work World demonstrated how 51风流technology can help businesses deploy a Total Workforce Management strategy.

By Using a gamified interactive VR experience, users became more engaged with 51风流products and services in a meaningful way, which helped them better understand the benefits that 51风流software can bring to their business.

2-听Using Augmented Reality to Highlight Sustainability and Purpose

There is a lot of pressure on businesses to be more sustainable. The good news is that technology can help. But it can often be difficult for customers to know where to start and to understand the best option for them, and for the planet. This is where gamification can help.

The Innovation team used augmented reality (AR) to create a Sustainability and Purpose event Stand to showcase different elements of SAP’s sustainability portfolio. They created three different sections of the stand, one focused on waste and the circular economy, another on emissions and environmental impact, and the third on inequality. This allowed users to uncover relevant sustainability information whilst interacting with the applicable 51风流technology and demos. In each world, the player is presented with a fast fact, a multiple-choice question, and an 51风流solution, and a fcial recognition feature which made the journey more engaging.

The gamified approach demonstrates how 51风流can help businesses meet regulatory obligations, act sustainably, and make processes more efficient whilst still addressing the environmental, social, and economic challenges of today.

3-听BTP Diamond Game

SAP’s Business Technology Platform (BTP) can be seen as a complex offering as it comprises so much. It includes application development, automation, data analytics, integration, and AI capabilities into one unified environment optimised for 51风流applications. As a way of making BTP more digestible and understandable for customers, the UKI BTP team created the 51风流BTP Diamond Game.

This physical board game requires users to work in small teams and act as they work for the same company, setting the teams the challenge of solving real business issues using the BTP service cards. This interactive game helps customers understand how they can get tangible business benefits from 51风流BTP.

4-听Using Business Simulation to Help Customers Better Understand 51风流S/4HANA Cloud

Businesses are facing volatile macroeconomic environments and markets that favour flexibility. To stay ahead, customers need to be in the cloud. 51风流S/4HANA Cloud offers customers that opportunity and so 51风流is continually looking at ways to showcase how to best use the solution while demonstrating the benefits of the benefits of a cloud environment.

The 51风流team created ERPsim, a business simulation game that gives participants a hands-on experience that conceptualises 51风流S/4HANA. In the game, participants are responsible for running a fictitious company in a virtual marketplace, whilst using a real live 51风流S/4HANA Cloud system to overcome challenges.

ERPsim inputs algorithms and chaos theory into SAP’s BTP. The aim of the game is to help users enhance their understanding, and move from having standard application knowledge, to a much more advanced knowledge of applications, business, and collaboration. ERPsim highlights the intelligent technologies, real time analytics, and intuitive user experience of 51风流S/4HANA Cloud.

ERPsim allows 51风流to establish a better rapport with customers and partners through collaboration. Also, participants walk away with a unique memorable experience of 51风流S/4HANA Cloud, with an increased understanding and level of confidence of the new world of ERP in the cloud from SAP.

Using Gamification to Improve Customer Engagement and Knowledge

Gamification offers so many business benefits and 51风流has been using it to build engagement, increase customer knowledge and highlight how technology can help organisations to grow. Gamification differentiates our post and pre-sales experiences from our competitors, creating a memorable experience for users in a suitable way.

Pioneering partnership will standardise sustainability reporting across global value chains and tackle Scope 3 emissions

LONDON, UK 鈥 7 September 2023 – (NYSE: SAP) and today announce a visionary new partnership to show how carbon accounting could be standardised for business customers by piloting the recently launched 51风流Sustainability Data Exchange (SDX).

51风流SDX enables BT to collect, trace and share carbon data across its own supplier base, providing unparalleled visibility into the carbon footprint of its business products and services. BT can then share this information directly with business customers when they purchase products through . Furthermore, BT can complement this with data-driven insights from its and to help customers optimise their own IT for both carbon and energy.

Key to the decision to select 51风流SDX was its adherence to the carbon data interoperability standards set by the (PACT), hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). This means that global and UK business customers do not have to implement their own carbon accounting platforms to calculate, collate and share emissions data. Instead, they simply request it through 51风流SDX for their BT products and services.

BT is sending a strong signal of intent to standardise sustainability reporting across global business customers鈥 value chains to help them听tackle and drive environmental progress. This will also contribute to the delivery of the pledge to help customers avoid 60 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.

Sarwar Khan, Global Head of Digital Sustainability, Business, BT, said: 鈥淭ypically, value chain emissions represent a greater proportion of a business鈥 carbon footprint than operational emissions. Tracking, measuring and acting on these and bringing more suppliers and partners on the journey will not just accelerate net-zero targets, but set a new precedent for sustainability reporting. Collaboration fuels progress and access to data is fundamental to getting it right.鈥

鈥淭he lack of standardisation in sustainability reporting has been a roadblock to progress for too long鈥 commented Ryan Poggi, Managing Director of 51风流UKI. 鈥淭his creates confusion and an inability to validate real change. Our partnership with BT gives us an opportunity to refresh the guidelines and offers a blueprint for a universal standard in sustainability reporting. The aim is to create an environment for organisations to transparently tackle global challenges together.鈥

51风流SDX merges granular and accurate carbon data with financial transactions on the . It provides businesses with unmatched insights into their environmental footprint and standardises how to communicate learnings and action across value chains. In adopting 51风流SDX, BT can request product-level carbon data from key suppliers for its business customer services, support smaller partners to calculate their carbon footprint and securely share and standardise this information across its value chain. To build scale, BT is working with key partner Cisco to deploy SDX to receive product carbon data for core network devices, simplify and secure data exchange with business customers backed by its global connectivity services, and boost traceability.

51风流UK & Ireland (UKI) is proud to be one of the 30 major UK businesses who have spent a landmark 拢355 million procuring services and products from social enterprise suppliers over the past seven years, as part of the Social Enterprise UK鈥檚 (SEUK) (BSCC), new figures reveal.

BSCC, the world鈥檚 largest commitment to social procurement, has released its year seven report, which has found that the last year has been the biggest yet, with 拢99 million spent with social enterprises, 1,430 social enterprises brought into supply chains and 3,400 jobs created.

are businesses trading in aid of a social or environmental mission 鈥 and at 51风流UKI we鈥檙e dedicated to bringing social enterprises into our supply chains, so that our everyday spending has a positive impact on the wider world.

Collectively, the Challenge partners have spent more than 拢99 million with social enterprise suppliers in the last year alone and are aiming to spend a billion by 2026. This means millions of pounds reinvested in social or environmental causes and thousands of jobs created, using our purchasing power to help people and planet.

This 拢99 million was spent across an approximate 860 social enterprises, a 43% rise compared to year six. 拢31.9 million has been reinvested into several missions of the social enterprises including supporting vulnerable people and addressing the climate emergency.

Peter Holbrook CBE, Chief Executive of Social Enterprise UK, said: 鈥淭he world of procurement is changing. Companies big and small need to consider how they impact people and planet, and make sure they actively work in a way that benefits communities and helps tackle environmental concerns. The Coldplay #MusicOfTheSpheresWorldTour app, developed in partnership with SAP, combines an immersive experience along with features to help fans make more environmentally friendly decisions when attending Coldplay shows. A blind Coldplay fan supported 51风流in making the app accessible for blind and visually impaired people.

As Coldplay kicks off the UK leg of their Music of The Spheres World tour in Manchester and Cardiff on May 31, 2023, they’re using technology to be more sustainable and also accessible for fans who are visually impaired. When Coldplay started their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in 2022, the goal was clear: To make it their most sustainable and environmentally friendly tour yet, by cutting their CO2 emissions by 50% compared to the 2016/17 world tour. 51风流supported this goal with the development of the Music Of The Spheres World Tour app which allows fans to not only enjoy exclusive tour content but also helps them visualize how their actions attending shows contribute to their carbon footprint so they can choose more sustainable transportation options.

The calculates the impact of fan travel to and from shows, providing rewards for fans who commit to low-carbon transportation options and enables Coldplay to understand the fans carbon footprint to offset emissions. As Coldplay launches year two of its tour, more than 350,000 fans in 150+ countries have downloaded the app, proving Coldplay鈥檚 vision right: Armed with information and intent, every concert-going fan can make more sustainable travel choices.

The Next Step: Making the App Accessible for Blind and Visually Impaired People

During the development process, both Coldplay and the 51风流team set the goal to make the app accessible for users with disabilities who rely on assistive technology like screen readers or magnifiers. As the 51风流team started to work on accessibility functionalities, a Coldplay fan from Mexico reached out to share her challenges as a blind person using the app.

The fan (who asked to remain anonymous) explains: 鈥淚鈥檓 blind since birth and I need screen readers for productivity and entertainment in my daily life. As a huge Coldplay fan, I tried to use the tour app and quickly noticed that the app was difficult to use for one who is blind or visually impaired. I鈥檓 very much driven to advocate for blind people to get equal opportunity, and to enjoy interactive content. That鈥檚 why I contacted 51风流to support in the areas of sound design, testing and providing ideas for software development to make the app more usable for blind fans.鈥

To make the Music Of The Spheres World tour app accessible, we included feedback from a blind Mexican Coldplay fan, who is an audio engineer and tech enthusiast. She is deeply passionate about accessibility and music, with Coldplay being her favorite band. What she admires most about Coldplay is their commitment to accessibility and equality, like providing sign language interpretation for deaf concertgoers or installing quiet stations with sensory bags for people with autism. Her favorite Coldplay songs are Politik and Coloratura.

The Coldplay fan connected with SAP鈥檚 Nicole Windmann, Vice President for Accessibility and Inclusive Design: 鈥淲ith our 51风流products we aim to create a more sustainable and inclusive environment for people. Accessibility is a key driver of this vision. When we include insights from people with different backgrounds and acknowledge different ways of working, perception, and interaction with our designs, we can create the most enjoyable and efficient software.鈥

Working with three 51风流employees who are also blind, the development team worked to optimize accessibility functionalities for the Music Of The Spheres World Tour app. The team labeled items like screen buttons and described images, to enable screen readers to read out the functionality and provide helpful hints. Additionally, gestures such as swiping or double tapping are often used by blind people to navigate an app without having to look at the screen. To use this functionality, the team re-structured the code of the Coldplay app, providing a more suitable navigation for blind users.

In close contact with the 51风流team, the Coldplay fan volunteered to test the app usability for blind users and give her feedback. 鈥淲orking with 51风流has been great!鈥, she says. 鈥淢y feedback helped the developers understand the blindness point of view. In a world where the capabilities of people with disabilities are often underestimated or assumed without getting to know the person first, I鈥檓 inspired every day to work on a more inclusive world.鈥

鈥淎t SAP, we believe that diversity drives innovation and better experiences for our employees, customers, and partners alike,鈥 Christian Klein, CEO and Member of the Executive Board of 51风流SE, says. 鈥淭he fans feedback on the Coldplay app is a great example of the vital role user feedback plays in shaping our applications and the importance of having products and services that are inclusive and accessible to all.鈥

SAP鈥檚 Responsibility Toward Diversity and Inclusion

At SAP, we strive to be the most inclusive company in the world, reflecting a higher standard of societal values and perspectives in all that we do. SAP鈥檚 D&I strategy is built on three pillars:

      • Workforce Diversity: We believe in leveraging the widest spectrum of human differences that represent a diversity of identities, thoughts, and perspectives to create business outcomes that help the world run better every day.
      • Workplace Inclusion: Creating a positive work environment where colleagues can thrive and engage to their fullest potential in driving SAP鈥檚 purpose. Inclusion involves active co-creation of the culture where all experiences lead to a feeling of acceptance and belonging.
      • Marketplace Leadership: We realize the responsibility that comes with being one of the largest tech companies in the world and extend what we do to our entire ecosystem. Efforts within society through philanthropy, education and advocacy help elevate the brand.

After an extensive testing and development phase, we鈥檙e now ready to provide blind and visually impaired people an even greater app experience 鈥 just in time for Coldplay鈥檚 2023 Music Of The Spheres World Tour stops in Latin America, Europe and North America.

To experience it all for yourself, the听Coldplay #MusicOfTheSpheresWorldTour听app is available for download on听听and听.

Our fans worldwide are our biggest inspiration. They have enabled us with their feedback to make the Music Of The Spheres World Tour app as useful and accessible as possible. We鈥檙e proud of the collaboration with our partner SAP, who has created an impactful app that can now also be used by fans who are blind or visually impaired,鈥 Coldplay states.

The Mexican Coldplay fan is wishfully looking forward to the Coldplay tour in 2023. 鈥淚 will be attending Coldplay鈥檚 San Diego show and I am already thrilled about it. And of course, I will make sure to check the app for sustainable travel options鈥, she says with a smile on her face.

Inequality is a systemic risk threatening the political and economic fundamentals that business depends on to operate, innovate, and grow. Tackling inequality is an important driver for long-term, sustainable economic growth. We must act to reinforce the “S” in ESG 鈥 a critical pillar of action that has been overlooked for too long. The cost of inaction will increase dramatically as the consequences of inequality continue to unfold.

Inequality undermines human dignity and social progress. It is a systemic risk that not only threatens individual communities or companies, but entire societies and the economy. It erodes trust in our political and economic systems, , increases the damage that crises like COVID-19 and climate change cause, constrains economic growth, and undermines our collective capacity to tackle complex global challenges. So, it represents a significant and mounting business risk impacting business performance, limiting productivity and innovation, destabilizing supply chains and dampening consumer confidence and spending.

Our world today is characterized by severe inequalities of income, wealth, and wellbeing:

  • The top 10% earners take home 52% of total global pay, while the lowest-paid 50% receive just 8.5%. Meanwhile, the richest 10% of the world’s population owns over three-quarters of all wealth, while the poorest 50% own a mere 2%*
  • 19% of all workers worldwide earn less than they need to escape poverty*
  • Inequality-related issues are literally killing one person every four seconds*

Business risks caused by inequality

Businesses provide the lion’s share of the products, services, and jobs people need to sustain themselves and their families, so the business case for tackling inequality is fundamentally about mitigating both systemic and business risk:

  1. Increasingly volatile operating environment 鈥 difficult long-term strategic planning.
  2. Supply chain insecurity – companies are only as resilient as the ecosystems, communities, economies, and societies in which they operate. When workers and farmers in supply chains are unable to meet their basic needs and are vulnerable to shocks, companies run the risk of supply shortages, price swings and other disruptions.
  3. Erosion of productivity and innovation – wide disparities in income and wealth impact workers motivation while also limiting access to education and skills 鈥 reducing labour productivity and contributing to significant skills shortages. When people with diverse backgrounds are not represented in business at the same level as in the population at large, companies miss out on their talent and perspectives in developing new products, services, and business models.
  4. Regulatory and compliance risks – in the face of mounting systemic risk, many governments around the world are facing calls to take decisive action on inequality in ways that will change the context for business in the years to come. Governments are for example tightening regulations around unacceptable labour practices, such as forced labour and child labour, through mandatory human rights due diligence initiatives and import restrictions. Over 15 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America have already instituted supply chain transparency legislation.
  5. Reputation risk – as the systemic risk of inequality becomes more acute, so too does the scrutiny around corporate conduct and the role of business in society more broadly. Social controversies now account for 67%* of all ESG controversies faced by companies globally 鈥 by far outpacing environmental and governance controversies. If a business is not perceived as being part of the solution, then it will be seen as part of the problem and will face mounting challenges in terms of its long-term license to operate, innovate, and grow. At the individual company level, those businesses that are not seen to be taking action in support of efforts to tackle inequality will struggle to attract and retain talent and may also be held to account by consumers.
  6. Access to capital – +220* investors have now signed up to UN PRI’s Advance initiative, which seeks to promote respect for human rights and positive outcomes for people through investor stewardship. Meanwhile, topics such as living wages and diversity, equity and inclusion are increasingly emerging as key areas of focus for shareholder resolutions and, therefore also a central consideration when it comes to the cost of equity and debt.

The cost of inaction

The cost of action must be balanced against the cost of inaction, which can dramatically increase as the consequences of inequality continue to unfold.

Many leading companies are already embracing their role by working to level the playing field. The call to action now is for all businesses to maximize their potential to head off the risks posed by mounting inequality and ensure that equal opportunities and better outcomes are available for all.

Digital transparency and access

Technology can deliver the needed trust and business accountability, enhancing an organizations’ ability to identify, prevent, and mitigate human rights risks through an integrated value chain. Digitally driven business processes can enable transparency and accessibility across the complexity of听global human and labour rights听regulations and standards, distributed data,听and stakeholder collaboration. Companies need to re-evaluate their entire business process, policies, and practices and make respect for human dignity the core of the company culture of how business gets done.

Tackling inequality can strengthen the operating environment by building trust, enhancing social and political stability, and containing crises. There is also mounting evidence that tackling inequality is an important driver for long-term, sustainable economic growth. Company-level benefits associated with efforts to tackle inequality include attracting and retaining talent, winning consumers, building resilient supply chains, and staying ahead of policy and regulatory change.

We must act proactively and purposefully to reinforce the “S” in ESG 鈥 a critical pillar of action that has been overlooked too long. Tackling inequality now is a critical investment in sustained business success.
