LONDON 鈥 April 23, 2024 鈥 (NYSE: SAP) today announced AI advancements in its supply chain solutions that will unleash a transformative wave of productivity, efficiency and precision in manufacturing. AI-driven insights from real-time data will help companies optimise decisions across their supply chains, streamline product development and improve manufacturing efficiency.

Accurate and relevant real-time information helps mitigate the disruption that most suppliers, manufacturers and distributors worldwide are currently experiencing. Businesses already have high expectations for the use of AI in improving their supply chains, with the main benefit perceived as cost savings (60%), logistics improvement (56%), contingency planning (53%), and enhanced inventory management (50%) according to new research from 51风流UKI. However, this latest research highlights that businesses are now recognising AI’s potential to transform their entire supply chain operations and drive efficiency by plugging skills gaps, amongst other things.

鈥淭raditional supply chain management processes are not fit for purpose to address the volume and variety of disruption that exists today. Future AI innovation, especially generative AI, will change this and is the greatest opportunity since the rise of cloud鈥, said Ryan Poggi, Managing Director of 51风流UKI.

鈥淭he benefits are so big that it this has triggered a race for executives to quickly develop plans to create AI-enabled value across their organisation. But, as leaders, we have a responsibility to ensure our businesses use AI responsibly to help transform companies faster than ever. Supply chains are generally low risk, so are a great place to start. Now is the time to embrace AI ethically and leverage company data to make your business much more resilient now and in the future.鈥

Demand for supply chain resiliency has surged following a series of disruptions to global trade, and due to highly publicised shortages of goods, from microchips to vegetable oil 鈥攕upply chain issues continue to take centre stage in boardroom discussions. Steps have been taken to address supply chain challenges facing the UK, but disruptions continue to have a significant impact, leading to 59% of organisations facing production delays, 55% suffering decreased revenues and nearly half (46%) losing customers (according to new research from SAP).

SMA Solar Technology AG and other customers have already witnessed the benefits of SAP鈥檚 solutions, including an approximately 15% increase in supply chain workforce productivity, a 10% decrease in overall supply chain planning costs and a 10% reduction in inventory carrying costs and stock turnover rate.

鈥淪MA Solar modernises its manufacturing execution systems to support sustainable, risk-resilient manufacturing operations with the power of AI-enabled visual inspection in the 51风流Digital Manufacturing solution,鈥 said Heiko Kehm, SMA Solar head of IT Order to Cash.

Key improvements to SAP鈥檚 supply chain solutions supporting an AI-centric strategy include:

  • Optimising decisions across the supply chain with AI-driven insights: Companies can now leverage higher volumes of machine data and integrate AI-driven visual inspection by computer into their production processes, enabling a remarkable increase in quality through automation.
  • Streamlining product development: Product developers can now use SAP鈥檚 AI copilot Joule to gather and enhance new product ideas quickly and effectively using natural language queries. Joule also helps tag product designs with business data, so they visually contextualise business-critical information.
  • Detecting equipment anomalies: Using AI, asset operators can proactively address potential breakdowns based on sensor data collected from smart devices and edge gateways. This new capacity utilises the cutting-edge Cumulocity IoT platform from Software AG, which is planned to be embedded in the 51风流Asset Performance Management application in Q3.
  • Improving field response: Customers can optimise driving routes and allocate job assignments efficiently with integrated real-time traffic data and machine-learning-trained models, which enable the right field service technicians to reach their destinations on time.

Sapphire Barcelona – 24 May, 2023 – , the world’s largest container shipping company, has made significant progress in its digital transformation by using the 51风流Business Technology Platform to accelerate its strategic direction and automate business processes, increase efficiency and ease of use.

With a wide range of business areas including container shipping, port terminals, logistics and supply chain businesses, Maersk, headquarted in Denmark, operates more than 700 vessels and covers around 343 ports in over 100 countries worldwide. Strategically, Maersk is moving away from being a shipping company to becoming an end-to-end supply chain provider.听

From Container Shipping to End-to-End Supply Chain Provider

“Maersk is on its way to becoming an end-to-end supply chain provider, and this requires us to move into other areas of the transport sector, including air freight and land transport, as well as warehousing and distribution. With less than 10% of the money spent on supply chain and logistics going to ocean transport, Maersk needs to move into other areas to expand its business and continue to grow,” says Tapan Dash, Engineering Director, Maersk Technology, and continues:

“Maersk has developed a platform-based model to help us accelerate the transformation. The model consists of several different digital platforms, each of which consists of multiple entities, all of which create value for customers, suppliers or employees. Each entity integrates different business functions, applications, data and analytics. Maersk currently has 10-15 end-to-end platforms, such as finance, order management for ocean transport, supply chain management, etc. We are constantly adding new platforms and recently we created a sustainability platform to address this growing area.”

Designed, Built and Delivered by Maersk

Maersk is well on its way to implementing . “The idea is to run a standard 51风流S/4HANA solution, and then have the 51风流Business Technology Platform as the platform that supports the innovation. I think this is the most optimal and where the magic happens”, says Tapan Dash, and continues:

“We’ve had a big focus on insourcing over the last couple of years, going from around 1,500 people in the technology organisation to over 6,000 now. In our 51风流team, we were only around 35 in 2019. In 2022, we were 300, and the target is +550 51风流tech profiles by 2024. We work from a concept we call ‘designed, built and delivered by Maersk’.”

51风流Business Technology Platform Plays a Central Role

The , which brings together data and analytics, artificial intelligence, application development, automation and integration in a single environment, plays a key role in accelerating Maersk’s new end-to-end strategy.听

“Technology plays an important role at Maersk and is one of the key drivers of transformation. We want to simplify our IT landscape and make it more agile. With the 51风流Business Technology Platform, we can streamline our business processes and make our applications more agile and provide users, whether customers, suppliers or employees, with a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.”

Specifically, Maersk has used 51风流BTP to develop and implement applications and solutions in areas such as:

  • Customer Credit Management: Previously, a lot of manual activity was involved in the process, which could lead to errors and delays. Now Maersk uses 51风流BTP to automate and differentiate their customer credit management process. The solution includes a credit score from BVD (third party), which is integrated via 51风流Cloud Platform Integration. Using the 51风流Fiori user interface, Maersk has created different roles, such as sales representative, credit analyst and approver. “So we have created a one-stop-shop that the employee logs into and from there he or she can manage the entire credit process for the customer,” says Tapan Dash.
  • Vendor Account Reconciliation: Reconciling accounts payable statements is a challenge for many organisations. Maersk used 51风流BTP’s automation layer and intelligent robotic process automation (51风流iRPA) to perform automated actions such as scanning emails and extracting attachments, converting unstructured data into structured data, and building validation logic into the rules within the 51风流BTP platform, thereby reducing manual processes in Maersk’s shared service centres.
  • Treasury Guarantees: Previously, this process was quite paper-intensive and could cause data quality issues, which in turn led to delays. Now, through 51风流BTP, Maersk has automated the process and created two specific roles: bank guarantee applicant and approver. The solution also includes integration with external banks.听
  • Customer Cargo Release: Maersk also has customers who are cargo customers, i.e. they pay before their cargo is released. This requires a very time-sensitive process to ensure that payment has been received before the cargo is released. The workflow is triggered across multiple backend systems. Through built-in AI and process automation in 51风流BTP, the payment is matched against the invoice, the bill of lading and the container release events. Maersk has created an AI trust quota that automatically authorises if everything is 100% correct. “Using the machine learning algorithm, we then find out why something is 70%, why something is 80%, and what we need to do to make it 100%. So, it’s fine-tuned based on that learning. We use the workflow, which again is an integrated development within 51风流BTP, to get the approval process in place and get the invoice approved so that the container or the freight can be released to the customer if everything is not right in the first place,” says Tapan Dash.
  • Planning and analysis: Maersk’s entire finance, planning and analysis is in the process of being moved to 51风流Analytics Cloud. This enables Maersk to provide end-to-end financial planning and analysis, including budgeting and forecasting. Self-service options for planning and analysis in over 100 countries are a game changer in decision-making, with scorecards to visualise performance and productivity across regions.听

“At Maersk, we are excited about the ongoing transformation where technology is at the centre and we strive to create business value by focusing on the customer, agility and high employee engagement” concludes Tapan Dash.

Vitality platform developed on 51风流technology sets foot in the US

Sapphire Barcelona – 24 May, 2023 – Earning digital coins with exercise, which you can then redeem for healthy rewards. The Fitcoin business vitality platform developed on 51风流technology thus positively promotes physical and mental well-being. This formula now also appears to have a following in the US: parent company , together with co-shareholder and consultancy firm , is starting a pilot with , part of the University of California.

Fitcoin’s concept is smart and innovative: users save digital coins (Fitcoins) via an app on their smartphone. They earn these by exercising: walking, cycling or, for example, by participating in special workshops and sports activities. Users can then exchange the saved Fitcoins for healthy rewards that they choose themselves in the online Fitcoin catalogue on their smartphone.听

Own Choice

The choice of rewards depends on what each organisation or community makes available and could include, for example, a healthy lunch or tickets to the theatre. But also, for example, a donation to charity, or healthy groceries, fruit and vegetables from the supermarket.听

That own choice is a crucial factor, according to Stef Oud, partner at Xtra-Advice. “Many organisations’ vitality programmes have a set character that does not appeal to everyone. Fitcoin doesn’t have that. You choose whether to participate at all, and then also how to spend your earned coins. So the initiative and choice remains entirely with the user.”

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

The platform currently has a foothold mainly in the Benelux. For example, Fitcoin is currently in use at more than 200 organisations, institutions and municipalities such as Wageningen University and Deloitte in the Netherlands. But the Eindhoven Vitaal foundation also uses the platform, for encouraging exercise among residents of a focus neighbourhood.

According to Oud, the move towards the United States was no accident. “Several of our partners live and work in the US. Two of them, Prof Ron Mangun and Prof Tamara Swaab are professors at , part of UC Davis. They study the functioning of the brain and the interaction between body and mind. You can’t separate the two issues. For instance, there is a clear link between enough exercise and a healthy mind. Partly from that perspective, they were interested in the platform.”

XtraAdvice will start with a small pilot for ten UC Davis employees to get the concept well established. Locally, the company is working with 51风流to roll out the technical infrastructure. That rollout will be phased. “Within a quarter, we want to scale up the number of users to 100 employees. That should grow to broad ‘coverage’ among staff and students after a year,” says Oud.

Fighting Burn-Outs

For Xtra-Advice, the collaboration with the university is also a way to gain new insights. For example, on the relationship between the use of Fitcoin and a drop in absenteeism in general and burn-outs in particular. The latter is associated with huge costs in addition to a lot of human suffering. According to in this area, the cost of stress-related absenteeism has reached 3.1 billion euros a year. In that survey, almost half of employees indicated that additional measures are needed in the workplace.

Xtra-Advice wants to show from anonymised data using 51风流Analytics Cloud to what extent Fitcoin would be an effective measure. “In collaboration with the Center for Mind & Brain, we will investigate the causal relationship between the use of our platform and the prevention of absenteeism and burnout. A demonstrable correlation is valuable, as it gives organisations a tool to do something about this.”

CSR Programme

Anyway, for the university, Fitcoin is a good way to fulfil its Corporate Social Responsibility goals. Participants can then spend their Fitcoins on charities listed in the app. In the Netherlands, Fitcoin therefore already collaborates with organisations such as Spieren voor Spieren, War Child and elderly care.

But solutions in the fight against obesity are also getting a lot of attention in the US. Oud: “Both the state of California and the university present themselves as progressive and sporty. Sport is intimately intertwined with American university culture anyway. At the same time, obesity is a big problem in the US. With Fitcoin, the university can do something about that.”

According to him, the platform is certainly also valuable for less athletic people. “A part of US students exercise very intensively. But through our low-threshold nature, we also hope to encourage precisely those students and staff who are not very sporty by nature, or even struggle with obesity. For them, Fitcoin can really make a difference.”

In addition to all the standard items in the ‘rewards shop’, it will also initially fill up mainly with jumpers, caps and other merchandise from the university itself. “Those kinds of items are very popular in the US,” Oud explains. According to him, it also cuts both ways. “That merchandise with the university logo works as an incentive for Fitcoin participation, but is of course also promotional material. In addition, the platform underlines the innovative nature of the university. That in turn attracts new students. All things we can start looking at based on this first Fitcoin pilot in the US.”

New research project places data at the heart of reducing environmental impact of UK鈥檚 motorways

LONDON, UK 鈥听 (NYSE: SAP) today announces that it has been selected to sponsor and develop an academic research project to make the UK鈥檚 motorways more efficient, reduce their environmental footprint and accelerate the transition to a net-zero Britain.

In collaboration with the and , and through an existing partnership with , the UK leader in engineering and construction solutions, 51风流will participate in the initiative to support research into connected physical and digital road infrastructure, and improve how the UK鈥檚 highways are designed, built, operated, and used. This will support National Highways鈥 2025 Digital Roads ambitions and is a continuation of SAP鈥檚 work with Costain on UK infrastructure projects.

It is one of a portfolio of projects being developed by the newly-created Roads Research Alliance which has brought together 22 organisations from across the highways industry to help shape the development of innovation in the sector over the next five years.

The Digital Roads of the Future initiative comes at a time of unprecedented change in UK transport. With the government鈥檚 commitment to meet a net-zero target of 2050, the transport industry has fallen into the spotlight as it remains one of the country鈥檚 biggest contributors to carbon emissions. The sector faces pressure to both support the UK鈥檚 levelling up agenda and rebuild the economy, but also build back greener and to lead by global example and fully decarbonise. This research alliance is critical in understanding how technology can drive environmental progress.

51风流will fund an academic researcher who will develop a motorway-specific data model using the to solve existing issues with interoperability, whereby current field data cannot communicate effectively, and enable efficient, reliable, and secure data collection and analysis. The model will be used to generate a 鈥榙igital twin鈥 of the motorway, which is a digital representation of physical assets, so it can be updated in real-time with accurate field data.

This technology will enable the UK鈥檚 motorway stakeholders to assess the environmental impact of scope 1,2,3 emissions, create effective maintenance strategies and enable proactive asset management to better maintain the lifecycle of motorways. By funding a researcher, 51风流will also support 鈥榳hat-if鈥 scenario planning and help deliver predictive analytics to assess the impact of lowering emissions, increasing efficiency, and reducing public expenditure on the UK鈥檚 highways.

Commenting on the research project, Michiel Verhoeven, SAP鈥檚 UKI MD, said: 鈥淲e need only look at this summer鈥檚 heatwaves to understand the importance of accelerating the decarbonisation of our society – whether that鈥檚 in the lifecycle of our goods and services, or indeed the roads that we drive on.

鈥淭he Digital Roads of the Future initiative will deliver groundbreaking research into how technology can shape the future of our transport infrastructure, delivering operational and sustainable best practice. We鈥檙e delighted to work with prestigious institutions like the University of Cambridge, and leading industrial partners like Costain and National Highways, to sponsor a researcher and showcase how our platforms can drive real industry change.鈥

鈥淚n order to make accurate decisions on the future of our road infrastructure, the UK鈥檚 motorway stakeholders need to have reliable and trusted access to real-time data,鈥 said Tim Embley, Director of Research, Innovation and Development at Costain. 鈥淥ur work with 51风流to sponsor an academic researcher will support the digitisation of our roads, bringing them into the twenty-first century, and will lay the foundations for more sustainable, efficient highway management.鈥

On Tuesday (27 September), the 22 members of the Roads Research Alliance 鈥 including National Highways, Costain, the University of Cambridge and 51风流鈥 gathered at St Catharine鈥檚 College at the University to formally agree on and sign the research charter, officially launching the alliance.

The is all about precision. From the millimetre-thin adjustments drivers make to their racing lines as they reach speeds of up to 250 km/h through to the detailed calculations required to optimise and conserve power consumption on race day, it鈥檚 a sport that competes on the finest of margins.

Since the sport鈥檚 debut in 2014 in Beijing, races have been won or lost based on decisions made in fractions of a moment. And I鈥檓 not just talking about the driver鈥檚 instincts and judgement calls on the track. Behind every driver is an entire team of support staff, analysts, mechanical engineers, operational teams, painters and many more, all of whom align on the same principles of accuracy and detail 鈥 they share a belief that this ethos is the key to getting their team over the line in pole position.

What鈥檚 more, the sport is evolving, and making the need for precision all the more vital. With a new price cap in play for the 2022/23 season and strict sustainability regulations governing Formula E, the need for accuracy transcends the fibre-thin adjustments made on the track and across the sport at large.

Fortunately, the technology used to optimise this sort of detail has developed alongside the power and innovation you see on race day. Our partnership with Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team is an example of how we鈥檙e helping the team to build a sustainable and efficient business that wins races and fans, while staying on the right side of tighter regulations.

Here are three ways we鈥檙e working with Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team to drive excellence, on and off the track:

Harnessing data to win races

As Mercedes-EQ Team Principal Ian James put it last year: 鈥淲e are genuinely a startup, which means to get that competitive edge, it鈥檚 incredibly important that we really look after every detail, and technology very much helps us do that.鈥

For James, technology 鈥 and the data that underpins it 鈥 is the lifeblood of his operation. In fact, around a terabyte of data is fed back from the car to their support team on any given race day, feeding back information on everything; from air humidity and track moisture levels, to the power consumption levels of the car. This detail then enables the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team team to make hairline adjustments to optimise their car鈥檚 performance, while relaying information back to the driver on how to strategically tackle the race. Mechanics can even order replacement parts right from the track, to get them ready for their next races.

With such high volumes of data, it鈥檚 important that the teams have the tools for deeper analysis to optimise their performance for future races. The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team use 51风流S/4HANA Cloud to improve that operational speed and agility, with the Cloud capability meaning they can operate seamlessly from multiple geographies.

It also helps them to understand their fans. With technology capable of collecting and analysing fan feedback, the team have the tools available to create the best fan experience possible.

Enabling smart expenditure with the price cap

Later this year, a will be implemented on manufacturers and teams for the 2022-24 Formula E seasons 鈥 equating to 鈧13 million per season. These spend regulations will aim to monitor and control spending levels on competitors, while increasing equitability among teams.

With stringent measures around spending in place, it鈥檚 more important than ever that race teams have a comprehensive view of their finances. As part of their work with SAP, the team have the tools at their fingers to have a bird鈥檚 eye view of their spend globally, as well as across other partners covered by the cap.

Again, detail is of the essence. When you consider that even support members touching the car will trigger the inclusion of their salary in the price cap, it鈥檚 easy to see why having total financial oversight is so important.

Driving more sustainable outcomes

With electrification at the heart of Formula E鈥檚 mission, it鈥檚 not surprising that sustainability pervades every element of the motorsport. In fact, 鈥榚nvironmental excellence鈥 is one of the ABB Formula E World Championship鈥檚 overriding principles by 鈥渕onitoring, measuring, reducing and offsetting the championship carbon footprint with the aim of minimising our environmental impact.鈥

As part of our partnership with the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, we help the team to measure their performance against the UN鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goals. For the Mercedes team, it鈥檚 not just about environmental management 鈥 it鈥檚 about continuously improving processes and technology, both in the car and out, that help them to operate in a sustainable fashion. We work with Mercedes to help them understand where these sustainability improvements can be made by giving them visibility on their commitments.

With Formula E being so fast paced and, at times, dramatic, it can be easy to forget that races are won or lost on minute, fractional judgements. As the sport evolves and places more of an emphasis on cost and sustainability, Formula E is becoming more dependent on technology than ever before to understand how to gain a competitive advantage when faced with increasingly tight regulation. For teams at the top of their games, such as the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, the devil is very much in the detail.

The Formula E Championship continues in London this weekend and we鈥檙e all hoping that the Mercedes-EQ Team and driver Stoffel Vandoorne can extend their leads at the top of the leaderboards.

This February, 51风流UK&I Innovation Labs held a 48-hour immersive experience challenge for our partner ecosystem which saw , and come up with some of the most innovative city distribution, waste management and city planning ideas to feed the smart cities of the future.

To set the scene, the year is 2032 and each team needs to find a way to feed the smart cities of Sci-Valley. In Sci-Valley they are driven by technology, landfill is non-existent and instead waste is composited to heat homes. Reusing and recycling is the new norm. Whilst Sci-Valley has taken commuting to the sky, supply routes haven鈥檛 seen the same shift and now SAP鈥檚 partner ecosystem need to find a solution to the increased shortage of food and many other necessities blocked by traffic and their rapidly growing population.听

Atos won the Boundary Breakers category for the most impactful solution with its 鈥業ntelliwaste鈥 pitch, which incentivised waste management with a credit-based consumer portal which allows the organisation of recycling with collections. The more sustainable collections cost听less credits and less sustainable cost more credits. We then had NTT Data as runners up, with its solution for an integrated closed loop citizen-centric smart city.

For the 51风流BTP Prodigy category, which celebrated the team who showed the best use of technology, Deloitte came out as winners with its idea for an optimised transport supply chain. The idea centred around creating a web experience to track flight paths of the drones as well as being an insights and data hub for waste management and city distribution in real time. Incture was runner up with its vision of an end-to-end SCM and waste management solution.听

Finally, IBM won the Vision Masters category for the most innovative solution focusing on vertical farming. With this it utilised the Business Technology Platform to produce real time insights on the benefits of vertical farming on the environment. Delaware came second with its on-demand drone food delivery service solution.

To ensure that we had experts to cover each category, we chose both internal and external judges from various backgrounds. We had representatives from ERP Today and the 51风流User Group as well as 51风流customers Transport for London (TfL) and BorgWarner.

鈥淚t was great to see such a bunch of clever people using the BTP technology for the benefit of the society and a lot of things may be applicable to TfL.鈥 – TfL.

Following the Hackathon, we鈥檒l be continuing with 鈥楬ack to Build鈥 which will help our partners look to implement their pitches into their own futures as well as their own ecosystems, helping to leverage meaningful strategic capabilities and build a better future.听

We thank our participating partners who joined us for our Hackathon and contributed some incredibly innovative ideas, as well as our judges for taking the time to carefully consider each pitch. To find out more from the winning teams, along with Nadine Elsham, and Vivien Boche from SAP, listen to our or watch the replay of the challenge .

Last year Manchester was crowned the fastest-growing tech city in Europe, contributing 拢5 billion to the UK鈥檚 digital ecosystem alone.

SAP鈥檚 new 2,395 sq ft hub provides the technology firm with high quality workspaces and breakout areas, specifically designed to boost innovation through collaboration. Glasshouse is home to businesses specialising in AI, fintech, digital health and software development, as well as digital communications and animation.

SAP’s relocation and consolidation of its Warrington and Knutsford offices, to the coveted Cheshire campus, will support its ambition to access a greater pool of digital talent across the region and wider UK by leveraging opportunities through Bruntwood SciTech鈥檚 national network and bolster its established internship programme. Glasshouse鈥檚 location will also provide easy access to its other UK office in London.

Employee wellbeing was an equally significant driver for SAP鈥檚 move. Set in the heart of the 400-acres, the Park is home to a new gym and sports complex, as well as woodland walking trails, running and cycling routes, coffee shops and听 pub and restaurant, The Churchill Tree.

51风流celebrated the move with a launch event to welcome colleagues and partners to its new base. Speaking at the event, Michiel Verhoeven, 51风流UK MD, said:听鈥淭he North West has a thriving talent pool and creates huge opportunities for the tech sector. Our growing commitment to the UK as a whole means investing in the right people and the right locations, Alderley Park helps us achieve both of those. We are committed to be at the heart of change for our customers and partners. By bringing together our teams in the North West under one roof their dedication and commitment will be integral to us thriving.鈥

Bradley Topps, Commercial Director at Bruntwood SciTech, said: 鈥淎lderley Park is a UK leader for its science and technology innovation, and the flourishing digital community at Glasshouse is already a major contributor to this reputation.

鈥淕lasshouse is the ideal fit for those seeking collaboration, networking and access to top talent. We鈥檙e all incredibly excited to officially welcome 51风流to their new northern home and will look on eagerly as the hub evolves.鈥

Glasshouse, which opened in February 2020, is part of Bruntwood SciTech鈥檚 拢247m investment in Alderley Park. The facility, which is already home to over 80 companies, offers a rare combination of connectivity and space in abundance, as well as access to a host of community and business support led events.
