51风流Partner Mercy Technology Services Uses Data to Solve COVID-19 Issues /2020/12/sap-partner-mercy-technology-services-data-rwe-covid-19/ Tue, 22 Dec 2020 14:15:42 +0000 /?p=181724 For more than a decade, Mercy Technology Services, the IT division of St. Louis-based health system Mercy, has harnessed the power of data analytics to produce real-world evidence (RWE) for more informed patient care.

Since 2017, Mercy Technology Services has been working with drug and medical device manufacturers, extending RWE to enhance their research efforts. So, when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Mercy’s region spanning four states in the Midwest, this 51风流partner was uniquely positioned to deliver the RWE that Mercy, its neighboring health systems, and manufacturers needed to help provide smarter care and the best outcomes.

Mercy Technology Services began building its data analytics capabilities through participation in the FDA-sponsored BUILD initiative, now , which was established to improve how to evaluate longitudinal safety and efficacy of medical devices in real-world settings. Mercy has collected and analyzed electronic healthcare (EHR) data and developed tools to create visualizations of the real-world costs and outcomes of medical devices and supplies, such as sutures, stents, and implants.

In addition, Mercy has extended these new RWE capabilities to manufacturers to provide insights that help them study the real-world uses, effectiveness, benefits, and risks of medications and medical devices, accelerating innovation all along the product life cycle.

Mercy is also a pioneer in using natural language processing (NLP) in healthcare settings to capture data from doctors鈥 notes and patient records and create important new data sets to use in analysis.

Crucial Real-World Evidence in a Pandemic

When the pandemic began, Mercy was uniquely positioned to leverage its RWE, in part due to its partnership with SAP. To enable Mercy to create the analytics dashboards for this project, 51风流provided 51风流S/4HANA and 51风流Analytics Cloud to Mercy at no cost for a brief time.

Mercy formed a COVID-19 task force made up of key Mercy leaders and used its dashboards to inform the task force and others within Mercy of critical capacity and inventory data as it faced the unprecedented challenge of managing a pandemic.

Mercy also participated in the St. Louis area’s regional task force. Mercy and neighboring healthcare systems agreed to share EHR data and perform analyses collectively. Because of Mercy鈥檚 leadership in healthcare analytics, it was also able to enter into an agreement to use statewide data from Missouri in its analysis.

Kerry Bommarito, Ph.D., director of Data Sciences for Mercy, explained that this strategy provided Mercy and its neighboring healthcare systems with a broader view of COVID-19. Data analytics based on both state and local data helped the region鈥檚 healthcare systems track current and projected needs for hospital and ICU beds, personal protective equipment (PPE), and medical supplies, including ventilators and drug therapies. The team also built epidemiological data models to predict surges of COVID-19 patients to ensure there were enough capacity and supplies to meet the projections.

Bommarito added, “Mercy also uses that data to do predictive modeling, such as the risk of mortality or the risk of the patient requiring a ventilator. We use that data at Mercy to indicate which patients are at low, medium, or high risk.”

She added that the dashboards created for COVID-19 insights also show the role a patient鈥檚 age plays. “Over the summer, cases were primarily in younger people, so even though cases increased, it didn’t immediately affect hospital admissions,” she explained. Additionally, Mercy worked with pediatricians in its region to keep them apprised of the case rates among children.

Powering RWE in the Future Through Partnerships

Throughout the development of the COVID-19 dashboards, Mercy considered how it would continue to provide COVID-19-related real-world evidence long after the height of the pandemic. Bommarito said, “Mercy’s general approach is that we believe we are going to move the needle in healthcare with our collaborations. Now that we have established unique capabilities, we see the opportunity to collaborate for the greater good, particularly across industries.”

“Collaborating with manufacturers informs the design and enhancement of pharmaceuticals and medical devices to optimize them for real-world scenarios. Clinical trial data is limited and only tells a narrow story of safety and effectiveness,” she explained. “We feel collaboration within and across our industry is where we’re really starting to break ground, innovate, and increase our power to create better, more informed healthcare.”

Currently, Mercy is working with a global manufacturer to provide insights that help identify risk factors for COVID-19 patients. These insights help better predict which patients will need certain treatment like respiratory support through ventilators and other oxygen support, how long they’ll require treatment, and the variables that help predict progression and mortality.

Bommarito added, “Given that COVID-19 vaccines are in their end stages of clinical trials, which have limited sample sizes, we’re also anticipating the need for near real-time, real-world evidence related to those vaccines. These insights will help manufacturers validate the safety and effectiveness of their products once they’re in use in clinical settings, as well as inform healthcare providers of the various COVID-19 treatment protocols and their outcomes.”

Bommarito feels that collaborations are key to meaningful RWE from data analytics. Mercy has worked on this project with clinicians, statisticians, and epidemiologists from neighboring healthcare systems as well as manufacturers’ data scientists and tech experts at SAP.

“It’s a good strategy to work with the best and brightest because it raises your game,” she said. “Hopefully, our work will lead to more groundbreaking insights to inform providers to prepare for changes, adapt how they treat patients, and improve outcomes.”

Uber Freight Helps Deliver Greater Profits and a Cleaner Planet /2020/10/uber-freight-greater-profits-cleaner-planet/ Mon, 19 Oct 2020 11:15:22 +0000 /?p=179733 Truck drivers have a phrase of pride that says, 鈥淚f you bought it, we brought it,鈥 meaning the products you purchase at your local store were delivered by trucks. About 70 percent of America鈥檚 freight travels that way, according to the American Trucking Association. But the system the industry relies on to find and book cargo is manual, time-consuming, and inefficient.

Uber created Uber Freight to bring the same ease to trucking that it did to ride-sharing. A better system means less greenhouse gas for all of us and more pay for truckers.

Drivers only make money when they carry freight, but about 20 percent of their miles are with empty trucks, referred to as 鈥渄eadhead鈥 miles. Reducing that number by half would cut emissions by 40 million tons per year and reduce diesel fuel consumption by more than US$8 billion dollars a year.

But it turns out that driving with a full trailer is a complicated process.

鈥淲ith the old system, drivers spent 30 to 40 percent of their time just waiting around,鈥 says Bill Driegert, general manager at Uber Freight. 鈥淥n average, it takes four hours to find their next load.鈥 If they find one at all.

Here鈥檚 what the old-school process looks like. A driver based in Atlanta, Georgia, hauls cargo to Dallas, Texas. To find a return load for the trip home, the trucker calls a broker, who then makes five or 10 calls to try to find a company that needs freight moved from Dallas to Atlanta.

Matchmaker, Make Me a Match

Clearly, a trucker never wants to drive empty. With Uber Freight, they can almost always do better than a one-way trip.

Uber Freight provides an intelligent marketplace that matches trucking companies and their drivers with cargo. It is not unusual for a driver to book a job in 30 seconds. They can do it resting at a truck stop, or a dispatcher can do it from a shipping office. It is as simple as opening the app and seeing the array of loads and where they need to go. They can find a load and then another one back home without wasting time or money.

鈥淲e tackled this challenge because we can,鈥 said Bar Ifrach, director and head of Marketplace at Uber Freight. 鈥淯ber is well known for having tremendous data, algorithms, and machine learning. It鈥檚 in our blood.鈥

The new system benefits all parties involved.

Companies that need to ship goods can reach a large population of available drivers. And trucking companies and independent drivers 鈥 also called owner-operators 鈥 can easily find and choose loads that fit their business and schedule.

It has made paperwork easier, too. With the old approach, documents that confirmed a load was dropped off had to be faxed. With Uber Freight, documents are photographed with a smartphone and uploaded.

More Than One Way to Get Home

Using its massive datasets, Uber Freight developed load bundles to help drivers pair multiple loads and create optimized custom routes, all while cutting down on empty miles.

Say the driver in Dallas can鈥檛 find a load for the trip back home to Atlanta. There just isn鈥檛 anything currently available for a direct path. Instead of going home with an empty trailer, the driver can use Uber Freight to bundle multiple loads along the way.

Thanks to this load bundling, Uber Freight is already seeing a 23 percent reduction in those dreaded empty miles.

鈥淲e show them they can book two stops or more to get where they want to go,鈥 says Ifrach. 鈥淭hey can haul one job from Dallas down to Houston and then a second job from Houston over to Atlanta, or at least to a location closer to Atlanta.鈥

This means that in addition to cutting emissions, saving gas, and earning more, the driver can make it home in time to watch their child鈥檚 ballet recital or soccer game. And that is truly using technology to help the world run better.

Bon Appetit, Safely: French Firm Helps Restaurants Plan for Safe Dining /2020/07/french-firm-aumenu-restaurants-safe-dining/ Wed, 29 Jul 2020 13:15:57 +0000 /?p=177125 Perhaps only behind romance and the Eiffel Tower, France is known for its love of good food 鈥 and the communal experience of dining with friends and family. COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on restaurants everywhere. Some are staying afloat with take-out and delivery service. Those that plan on surviving are looking for new ways to keep their businesses afloat.

To increase that margin of safety, French startup aumenu worked with 51风流partner W3COM to develop a fast and efficient way to eliminate at least one source of potential contagion: the menu.

Imagine entering your favorite eatery. You are seated and a friendly waiter greets you and takes your drink order. But then, instead of handing over menus, the server motions to a QR code on your table.

You鈥檝e seen these before: a grid of small, black squares on a white background. QR stands for quick response, and you see why after you scan it with your phone and the restaurant鈥檚 menu instantly appears on your screen 鈥 touched by no one but you.

This feature alone would close the sale for most concerned restaurant owners, but the product also delivers additional value to the restaurateur and a unique experience for patrons.

Simplified Solution

QR codes are not new. Restaurants could do this work on their own, but the process of transforming printed menus into digital files is resource intensive. Plus, the quality of the labels would be poor and the cost to replace them high.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 do high-quality printing with a home laser printer,鈥 says Guillaume Boucher, CEO of W3COM. 鈥淭hat paper can鈥檛 survive the daily, aggressive cleaning required by a restaurant. The owner would be re-printing labels constantly.鈥

The process from aumenu and W3COM takes the restaurant鈥檚 menu in whatever file they share 鈥 Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel 鈥 and quickly transforms it into viewable web pages, complete with tasty photos.

鈥淟ife will be very complicated for owners as restaurants re-open to the public,鈥 says Boucher. 鈥淭hey won鈥檛 have time to go on their websites and turn menus into digital files or, worse yet, start retyping existing menus.鈥

This will be a new and unique experience for customers. After scanning the QR code, diners can enter their email address if they like. This makes it possible to deliver a separate bill to each patron. It also alerts the restaurant when a loyal customer has returned. That can mean a free drink or appetizer.

The system was designed in hosted by SAP, making it easily scalable. 鈥淲e are looking for partners in countries beyond France,鈥 says Boucher. 鈥淎nd because the data in 51风流Business One is so well structured, swapping languages and currencies will be easy.鈥

Pierre-Louis Gueguen, president of aumenu, says, 鈥51风流Business One is at the heart of the service provided by our startup. It was evident to us that such a project needed a strong ERP software with a great reputation.鈥

While the technology hums quietly along behind the scenes, diners venturing out after a long lockdown will see that their favorite restaurant, caf茅, bistro, diner, bar, joint, or dive is taking smart steps to help ensure their health 鈥 as they enjoy good food.

COVID-19 Supply Chain App Launched in Seven Days /2020/07/cordis-solutions-covid-19-supply-chain-app/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 12:15:20 +0000 /?p=176319 Due to the lockdown measures needed to limit the spread of the coronavirus, the global supply chain is suddenly a hot topic. Everyone in business and politics 鈥 from countries and corporations to municipalities and mom and pop stores 鈥 is talking about the need to keep goods moving.

Cordis Solutions and its parent company, ExceleratedS2P, created an application for businesses to assess their supply chain exposure against the COVID-19 risk level of any country using live data from the World Health Organization (WHO). , the Health Risk Impact Overview app gives businesses a clearer picture of potential impacts to the supply chain so they can develop contingency plans, if needed.

By combining a company鈥檚 purchase order data with a live feed from the WHO, customers can identify suppliers in high-risk regions and then use a Qualtrics survey to assess each supplier鈥檚 confidence in meeting orders and mitigating future risks. If new suppliers are need, 51风流Ariba Discovery can connect customers to alternatives to maintain business continuity.

About the Health Risk Impact Overview app

  • See a Real-Time Global Impact: By combining a company鈥檚 purchase order data with live COVID-19 case data feed, a business can visually see its supply chain exposure all in one place.
  • Take Actions Based on Insights, Not Impulses: By understanding where an organization is most exposed, a business can identify areas to focus on and explore in more detail.
  • Deploy and Integrate Quickly with SAP: Using open API鈥檚, the app easily integrates with 51风流Ariba and 51风流ERP to provide a comprehensive view of all open purchase orders, contracts, and sourcing events.

鈥淒isruption of the supply chain can have a domino effect on the economy,鈥 says Ramesh Varsani, co-founder of . 鈥淕etting this app up and running quickly was critical since the problem is time sensitive.鈥

Speed to Market

The 51风流Ariba team was looking for a partner to take advantage of the open application programming interface (API) approach, which is perfect for driving fast innovation. Cordis Solutions boldly jumped in.

鈥51风流wanted a partner to take their idea, develop it, get it to market quickly, and support it,鈥 says Varsani. 鈥淲e formed a close relationship with the 51风流Ariba team and were able to complete the entire project in less than 14 days.鈥

The standard time to get an app approved and launched on 51风流App Center is six to eight weeks. Due to the critical need for this app, that part of the process took just seven days with the support of multiple 51风流teams.

Within 24 hours of being posted, the app caught the attention of a multinational business. Since then a number of customers have requested demonstrations.

Mitigating Risk

Many people think the supply chain is all about logistics, moving products from point A to point B. But it鈥檚 also about managing risk. The app benefits those working in procurement but also people in compliance and risk management.

Right now, much of the work to rate COVID-19 risk is done manually. People are calling supplies and entering data on spreadsheets. This doesn鈥檛 necessarily provide good visibility into a situation that changes rapidly. The app, on the other hand, can show real-time results as soon as it has access to customer data.

The app is the starting point of a broader risk management process. The initial overview provided by the app is immensely valuable, but what a company does with that information is what really matters. It lets them engage with their suppliers, understand the situation, and develop alternative plans to minimize risk.

Supply Chain Visibility Speeds FEMA Response to Coronavirus /2020/05/supply-chain-visibility-fema-coronavirus/ Wed, 27 May 2020 17:15:17 +0000 /?p=172371 As U.S. hospitals became overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began building and stocking alternate care facilities across the country.

Because FEMA is working as fast as possible to meet the growing demand for hospital beds, supply chain visibility — including real-time tracking into the shipments of equipment and supplies — is critical. A delayed shipment can impact the opening and running of the temporary hospital and its ability to care for patients.

, according to Dr. Nezih Altay, director of M.S. in Supply Chain Management at DePaul University鈥檚 Driehaus College of Business. To manage the transportation of supplies to some of their temporary hospitals, FEMA partnered with , a leading retail logistics and consolidation provider.

鈥淭his pandemic has caused a lot of uncertainty in our communities, and we wanted to be able to give back in as many ways as possible,鈥 said Ryan Pikus, CIO of RJW Logistics Group. 鈥嬧淩eal-time supply chain visibility is a requirement for the FEMA loads we carried with construction materials for a vital COVID-19 coronavirus relief center at McCormick Place in Chicago. It also helped us to adhere to tight construction deadlines as the pandemic grew more and more serious.鈥

, an 51风流partner and a global leader in advanced visibility for shippers and logistics service providers. They onboarded the necessary carriers to its project44 network for RJW鈥檚 use.

鈥淩JW was able to monitor shipments and provide FEMA with access to the latest updates using our Visibility Operations Center,鈥 project44 Founder and CEO Jett McCandless shared. 鈥淲ith access to high-fidelity supply chain visibility data in real time, everyone can make more informed decisions, increase agility, and proactively handle issues — especially when time is critical.鈥

Less than two hours after contacting project44, RJW was tracking shipments from a leading multinational retailer to FEMA鈥檚 temporary hospital at Chicago鈥檚 ,聽 the largest convention center in North America, which has been transformed in partnership with the U.S Army Corp of Engineers.

Converting three exhibition halls into field hospitals created about 3,000 beds and provide potentially life-saving healthcare for patients who test positive for COVID-19.

鈥淐ontributing to an effort like this was really incredible,鈥 project44 Chief Revenue Officer Tim Bertrand said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 using the technology and know-how from each company, setting up a connection and access to data within a matter of hours, and applying it in a way that can really help people in a time of need. I鈥檓 proud we were able to play a part.鈥

To support the COVID-19 response, project44 is providing free tracking for organizations — including non-profits, non-governmental organization (NGOs), government agencies, hospitals, pharmacies, grocers, farmers, and food banks — to help coronavirus relief and prevention efforts. This includes supply chain visibility of over-the-road tracking in North America, truckload tracking in Europe, and ocean tracking for inbound freight to North America. Lifting Spirits: How a U.S. Distillery Helps in the Fight Against Novel Coronavirus /2020/05/sagamore-spirit-fights-coronavirus/ Thu, 21 May 2020 12:15:07 +0000 /?p=171678 When COVID-19 turned the world upside down, Sagamore Spirit assumed it, like most other manufacturers, would have to shutter its Baltimore, Maryland-based distillery until Governor Larry Hogan said it was safe to reopen.

Then the company got a call from Johns Hopkins Hospital, which was in desperate need of hand sanitizer for its frontline medical workers.

Hand sanitizer is made up primarily of alcohol, so to answer the call for help, Sagamore Spirit converted its distillery from a producer of rye whiskey 鈥 鈥渂ourbon鈥檚 older brother鈥 鈥 to corn ethanol to start producing 54,000 liters of hand sanitizer for the hospital.

鈥淭here is no higher priority than serving the growing and vital needs of health professionals and first responders, and the entire team at Sagamore Spirit is prepared to contribute to this global effort,鈥 said Drew Thorn, vice president of Operations and Finance at Sagamore Spirit. 鈥淲e feel fortunate to have the expertise and manufacturing capacity to make a difference at a meaningful level and we are committed to servicing as many needs as possible.鈥

Sagamore Spirit is one of 700 distilleries across the U.S. that have joined in the effort to support hospitals in their localities. But the transition is involved.

Among the many things to take into consideration, Sagamore Spirit had to coordinate with pharmacists at Johns Hopkins to work out the formula to produce hand sanitizer. It then had to adjust its supply chain, and instead of sourcing primarily rye, it needed to source locally grown corn.

鈥淏eing a whiskey producer, we already have very reliable sources for corn from our existing vendors, as it is an ingredient we regularly use,鈥 Thorn said.聽鈥淲e also have a lot of local farm relationships that were very happy to supply us and support this project.聽 We have had no supply chain issues for agricultural products.聽The supply chain has been much more impacted for chemical ingredients and packaging materials.鈥

Sagamore Spirit is an 51风流customer, and Thorn said the software made the transition almost seamless.

鈥淎ll ingredients are inventoried items within our 51风流system and assembled through the production module into finished sanitizer product inventory,鈥 he explained. 鈥淚t is an excellent system for managing inventory, COGS [cost of goods sold], resource planning, and then ultimately commercial transactions or donations.鈥

The sanitizer that Sagamore Spirit is producing does not have the same consistency of sanitizer bought in stores; because of the formula, it has a viscosity only slightly above water. It is packaged in five-gallon buckets in the hospital so that staff can refill personal-sized bottles. The buckets are then returned to Sagamore Spirit and used for the next batch.

Under normal circumstances, the company usually has about 50 employees working on-site, including tour guides for its distillery.

For hand sanitizer production, Sagamore Spirit is down to 12 employees on-site, all of whom have their temperature taken before entering the facility and are equipped with protective gear and required to social distance.

As states begin to ponder reopening certain sectors of the economy, Thorn said Sagamore Spirit will not go back to producing rye whiskey until Maryland鈥檚 frontline healthcare workers and first responders have the hand sanitizer they need.

鈥淲e plan to make sanitizer as long as there is a critical need,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 plan to stop sanitizer production based on when the state opens, but rather based on when our hospital partners indicate their traditional supply chain has been reestablished to the point where they will be covered.鈥

Using Tech and Data to Reduce Injuries in Contact Sports /2020/05/protech-reduce-injuries-contact-sports-tech-data/ Thu, 07 May 2020 12:15:51 +0000 /?p=171100 In 鈥淢oneyball,鈥 best-selling author Michael Lewis describes how the Oakland A鈥檚 famously used sabermetrics data to overachieve in 鈥 and eventually reinvent 鈥 Major League Baseball (MLB).

Now, Wales-based Sports and Wellbeing Analytics (SWA) is using what could be called 鈥渟afermetrics鈥 — technology and data analytics to reduce injuries in contact sports related to head trauma.

The company has developed a mouthguard filled with sensors that sends data to 51风流S/4HANA Cloud. In the same way the A鈥檚 transformed professional sports by creating a new way of looking at statistics, SWA wants to redefine the way sports are played from a safety perspective.

鈥淚n short, we call it 鈥楶erformance Through Welfare,鈥 and that鈥檚 what this is about,鈥 SWA CEO Chris Turner said. 鈥淔or players, this is about safety. For coaches, it is about performance. By taking advantage of the data, you can instill safety into performance.鈥

The mouthguard does not prevent injuries in contact sports resulting in concussions, which have become the basis of a major discussion and put the parents of every athlete on edge. But the technology鈥檚 goal is to create an atmosphere that is accepting of change based on the head trauma data that the platform gathers.

The platform, Protech, is the combination of the mouthguard, the technology that transmits data from training and games to a computer, and the software that allows the data to be analyzed in the right ways.

Protech was piloted with the Welsh rugby team Ospreys and is now being used by other rugby teams. It is also gaining attention in other contact sports seeking injury prevention, such as boxing, ice hockey, and even Olympic bobsledding.

Though it may sound unwieldy, fitted with a rechargeable battery and sensors that transmit data, the mouthguard itself is only five grams heavier than a normal mouthguard.

According to Turner, the tricky part was programming the mouthguard to consider and eliminate many of the false positives that would naturally come as a byproduct of sports.

For example, the mouthpiece may fall out of an athlete鈥檚 mouth and hit the ground, creating an impact. That data point needed to be defined. Other data points include vibrations caused when athletes spit, speak or shout. All those pieces of inaccurate data needed to be minimized.

Protech records severe impacts, measured in G forces. Measurements are transmitted in real time. Turner said if somebody sustains a severe impact during a match 鈥 especially one away from the ball that nobody ever sees 鈥 medical personnel can quickly be informed and check whether the player sustained a concussion.

Another great value of the technology is identifying patterns of impacts during training so coaches can alter their approaches to practices.

鈥淲ith a game, match, or fight, the technology is used for monitoring, but training is a more controlled environment,鈥 Turner said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when you can look for patterns of behavior, such as what鈥檚 happening during contact drills. Some drills are more intense than coaches expected. They made small alternations to the drills so that players still get the benefits, but impacts are reduced or eliminated.鈥

Turner, who recently detailed his company鈥檚 progress at the 51风流Innovate Live event in New York, said one thing they started analyzing was where a tackle creates the most impact on a player鈥檚 body, such as the shoulders, waist, or legs. That information is then shared with coaches so they can teach proper tackling techniques.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e starting to use the data to rearrange the schedules of contact drills,鈥 Turner said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not telling coaches or athletes what they can and can鈥檛 do, we鈥檙e just giving them the data to show when you do this drill, here is the consequence. A coach could then choose to schedule high-impact drills earlier in the week rather than two days before they play.鈥

As more teams and more sports adopt the platform, it will broaden the reach of the analytics to benefit everyone.

鈥淭he real value for us is the view of the data that we can create once it鈥檚 been collected,鈥 Turner explained. 鈥淥ne benefit of using 51风流S/4HANA Cloud is the ability to draw multiple views out of the data, which can help minimize the number and severity of injuries in contact sports. If we have multiple tenants of different rugby clubs, with the right authorizations to access the data, I can produce views across the clubs. I can produce views in a hierarchy, so if I鈥檓 playing for the national team or the club team, I can combine data to see trends, similarities, and differences, and sort data across time. This aggregate data becomes really valuable for everyone.鈥
