The global waste problem is growing, with of the 100 billion tons of materials we consume annually making it back into circulation. Plastic waste is one catastrophic example, with the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic getting in our oceans every minute, on top of the that have already accumulated. Once produced, plastic can endure for hundreds of years, breaking down into what are known as microplastics and slowly poisoning natural habitats and animals, which directly impact the well-being and economic livelihoods of millions of people. Despite this stark reality, global demand for plastic continues to rise, with production expected to by 2050.

This is a global crisis requiring immediate and sustained action. To tackle the plastic waste problem, we must commit to a 聽model, where we eliminate waste and pollution, recirculate resources, and regenerate natural systems. The circular economy changes the way we source materials and make and use products.

What鈥檚 more, new regulations are putting pressure on global business to adopt a circular economy model. In March of last year, world leaders at the United Nations Environment Assembly to negotiate an international, legally binding instrument on plastic pollution by 2024. In the European Union (EU), the circular economy is a of the European Green Deal, a set of policy initiatives signed in 2020 with the aim of making the EU carbon neutral by 2050 and setting new requirements to make products more reusable and energy and resource efficient.

With an estimated of a product determined at the design stage, a key element of the circular economy is in the design of products and their packaging. Circular design at its most strategic level is a huge lever for the overall reduction of the environmental and climate footprint of products, as it considers all aspects of product development, including materials used and the manufacturing process. Most significantly, circular design considers what becomes of the product or its component parts once it has reached the end of its usefulness.

As Sarah Gillespie, customer success manager for Circular Economy at SAP, says, 鈥淒esign is an absolutely critical stage of product development where we can have an enormous impact for good. By following circular principles at the design stage, we can design out waste from the beginning instead of simply mitigating it.鈥 Circular design can also help to address the growing climate issue, since an estimated are linked to how we manage material flows for products.

Circular design helps organizations to review their processes and take steps towards using less raw materials and with more efficiency. But one of the biggest challenges for business to implement circular design is getting accurate data, which is crucial for assessing material flows and resource productivity. As companies and consumers struggle with the pandemic鈥檚 ongoing health and economic crises, supply chain disruptions remain the norm, and accelerated digital transformation demands cloud-based innovation. These challenges are taking place against the backdrop of increasing climate change and calls for equality.

Mueller discussed how we can reinvent the global economy to meet climate change targets, rethinking how we deliver and consume products and services, how we manage waste, and how we use technology. Pointing out that inequality was causing social unrest worldwide, Mueller said that organizations needed to help everyone develop the right skills, which would open opportunities for people to work where they fit best.

Mueller explained how RISE with 51风流provides customers with a transition path to the cloud, while 51风流continues to offer developers low-code/no-code and other tools to extend innovation on built on . In a preview of his developer keynote, 51风流developer advocate Rich Heilman shared how the just-announced 51风流S/4HANA Cloud, ABAP environment, equipped developers to build custom ABAP extensions for the public cloud offering 51风流S/4HANA Cloud.

Mueller said the objective was to make the ABAP environment for 51风流S/4HANA Cloud the environment to build tightly coupled extensions for all cloud editions of 51风流S/4HANA based on the public cloud APIs. This will help developers build upgrade-safe extensions and move toward a clean core. Equally important, it closes the last extension gap in 51风流S/4HANA Cloud to ease the transition from on premise to the cloud.

Making It Easy to Innovate on 51风流BTP

As an example of how 51风流continues responding to ecosystem innovation imperatives, Mueller announced the roll-out of the free tier model for 51风流BTP to individual developers, including and . He was joined by Steffen Pietsch, head of Product Management for 51风流BTP, who shared how developers can find available 51风流BTP services, as well as use case examples to help build proofs of concept, on .

Pietsch explained how a free tier makes it much easier to gain experience and start to innovate with 51风流BTP. Developers can now build their proofs of concept on 51风流BTP without any commitment; if they decide to move their applications toward productive usage, they can do so by changing from the free to the productive service plan without rebuilding the entire application in a different account.

Low-Code/No-Code Speeds Up Development on 51风流BTP

Acknowledging the tech talent gap and the growing importance of citizen developers, Mueller said that 51风流has doubled down on investments in low-code/no-code tools, announcing the launch of a unified on 51风流BTP. He said that 51风流was introducing 51风流AppGyver for no-code development, and making the available for low-code development. He also previewed , a no-code automation solution, showing the audience how non-technical business people, along with designers and experienced developers, can extend 51风流Service Cloud with machine learning to quickly resolve customer service issues and speed up order approvals.

Mueller said that low-code/no-code means both citizen and professional developers can increase productivity and innovate at scale, reflecting how business and IT work together. He saw this unlocking a new order of magnitude of value creation for individuals and society at-large.

Gain SAP-Specific Knowledge Free of Charge

Reinforcing SAP鈥檚 commitment to developer learning, Mueller outlined the company鈥檚 newly-launched learning experience, . The centerpiece consisted of seven 51风流BTP-specific learning journeys, with more to come.

He said that the new learner experience was designed for all developer skill levels, including pro-code developers, IT professionals, academic students, and technology thought leaders. He announced the new 51风流Data Warehouse Cloud, 51风流BW bridge, allowing organizations to innovate faster by moving data from their existing 51风流BW application to the 51风流Data Warehouse Cloud solution.

Mueller concluded with a heartfelt message to developers that as demand for 51风流grows, the company鈥檚 ecosystem is an exciting place to be, nothing less than a true movement. Much of this garbage is plastic, and it鈥檚 no surprise why: plastic production increased from and is expected to double to 896 million by 2050. Now, about 8 million tons of plastic waste winds up in the ocean each year.

George Leonard, , says, 鈥淚f we don鈥檛 get the plastic pollution problem in the ocean under control, we threaten contaminating the entire marine food web, from phytoplankton to whales. And by the time the science catches up to this, perhaps definitively concluding that this is problematic, it will be too late. We will not be able to go back. That massive amount of plastic will be embedded in the ocean鈥檚 wildlife essentially forever.鈥

Clearly, the time for action is now. 鈥淲e must rethink, innovate, and implement at an unprecedented pace and scale to enable a thriving future for environment, economy, and society,鈥 says Thomas Saueressig, member of Executive Board of 51风流SE, Product Engineering.

We spoke with Stefan Haenisch, senior vice president of 51风流Learning Strategic Initiatives at SAP, to dive deeper into his perspective, especially as he comes out of the World Economic Forum鈥檚 summer event, , and recently published an for WEF about the critical lessons in workforce skilling and lifelong learning.

Q: In your article for the World Economic Forum, you discuss the importance of connecting business strategy to workforce skills. Can you share what this looks like and why it鈥檚 so essential?

A: Every company plots out its business strategy. But how often does it think about how this relates and aligns with its people strategy and strategic workforce planning and skill building?

For example, if our strategy is to use to make our products smarter, we must simultaneously be asking ourselves how we can on the required skills to drive this vision.

Skill training shouldn鈥檛 be an afterthought. Instead, by connecting skills and strategy from the very beginning, companies can proactively adapt and more effectively position themselves for long-term success.

How does an organization develop skills for the future when things are changing so frequently and we can鈥檛 possibly know what the world will look like in the next couple of years?

As we saw with , things may go differently than predicted. Companies must embrace ambiguity and disruption when it comes to skills for the future. A recent article in the noted, 鈥淚f you focus on building individual micro skills, you may be missing the bigger picture.鈥 Indeed, there are 鈥榚xpiration dates鈥 on technical skills as innovation emerges, so companies must establish a culture that encourages agility and experimentation in the workforce 鈥 and, not least, motivates continuous learning 鈥 in order to yield sustainable success. Sasi Reddy, senior 51风流solution architect at Sun Chemical, shares the team鈥檚 user experience (UX) transformation journey, the biggest takeaways, and what it takes to be a UX champion.

From Theory to Action with an open51风流Course on Design Thinking

Sun Chemical is a recognized leader in printing inks, coatings, pigments, and supplies for the packaging, publication, commercial, industrial, and digital markets. With over 20,000 employees spread across 63 locations around the world, Sun Chemical relies on lean business processes to ensure its field service workers and customers can quickly and easily maintain field data and enter new requests on the go, both on- and offline.

To further enhance their knowledge of design thinking and to learn how this methodology could be applied to both process improvements and application development, Reddy and his team took part in the open51风流course 聽 in 2017. The core of the methodology is developing empathy for users by putting oneself in their shoes. Design thinking also relies on prototyping and a strong iterative process rather than on intuition, something which Sun Chemical has embraced fully. Since completing the course, the team has worked with a few 51风流partners, and later independently, to offer design thinking services to the entire company, with 15 major design-led projects to date.

51风流Fiori Apps Support Lean Business Processes

Over the past five years, Sun Chemical has groomed an elite team of UX champions that leverage design thinking to accelerate and digitize its processes. A key factor in the team鈥檚 success has been to build tailored 51风流Fiori apps that support an agile development approach. This method scales and requires a minimal investment. It allows the team to build apps for a system that runs on 51风流ERP, which聽 plans to migrate to 51风流S/4HANA later.

If you ask Reddy which of the more than 200 existing apps he鈥檚 most proud of, there are many that come to mind, such as the Regulatory Inquiry App and the Raw Material Request App, both of which emerged from a prototype developed during the 2016 open51风流course and have since been rolled out globally.

From Workshop to Real Life: The Field Service App

A remote design thinking workshop was kicked off in 2018 to determine how to better manage the day-to-day activities for European field service engineers who relied on using a mix of e-mails and spreadsheets to maintain their work order history and incoming requests. The workshop included the field engineers, their supervisors, the administrator who orchestrated the work orders, and developers from India. From the workshop emerged the idea to develop an application that contains all the information in one place.

The app, which was developed in a few short weeks, makes it easy to track what service has previously been done for a specific customer and supports detailed reports on previous work orders. Naturally, it allows field service workers to easily enter new orders and incorporates a digital signature on native iOS mobile devices, something which the workshop participants were 鈥渞eally surprised that we could deliver on so quickly,鈥 says Reddy. Since the rollout in Europe, the app has been immediately accepted by its users and has made its way to North and South American field service workers as well.

It鈥檚 About the Mindset, Not Just the Apps

There is no doubt that the design thinking method requires a significant time investment from those involved. From the initial workshop, where research, user empathy, and ideation take place, to the design process that relies on numerous iteration cycles with end users, you have to put in the work to ensure the end result solves the problem at hand and meets users鈥 expectations.

Reddy agrees that the effort is time consuming. He and his UX champion colleagues spend a lot of time taking part in collaboration calls with teams who are currently . They receive feedback on the applications on a daily basis to ensure the transition to the new user experience goes smoothly.

But Reddy has also seen the fruits of his team鈥檚 labor: 鈥淧eople are seeing the value of it. Our departments have seen our work. It鈥檚 been almost four years. Previously, we drove design thinking; now people request it from us. And not necessarily to build apps, though everyone鈥檚 now on board with 51风流Fiori, but to improve processes in general. The mindset has really changed in our company.鈥

Now that the year is drawing to an close, we want to take a moment to review what 2020 has been like for .

Like many others, we had to face and overcome various challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this year has also been a very successful one for openSAP. The platform welcomed more than 200,000 newly registered learners and exceeded the milestone of 1 million registered learners. As in previous years, we received feedback from our learners, and they have again been immensely satisfied with their learning experiences on openSAP.

In the spring, 51风流CEO Christian Klein announced the company鈥檚 new digital learning initiative, which helps make innovative educational content accessible to anyone during this challenging time. open51风流became the home for this initiative, where learners could access online content from across all 51风流training areas.

In the middle of the year, open51风流opened courses from previous years to allow learners to catch up and earn certificates. Learners gladly took advantage of this offering. Between March 31 and June 30, there were more than 25,000 records of achievement, and over 35,000 confirmations of participation were awarded in self-paced courses.

This has been a year full of change and improvement on open51风流as well. We launched open51风流Podcasts and a restructured platform for open51风流Microlearning. We are proud to say that, at this point in time, we have state-of-the-art platforms for each of the three learning formats and are on our way to an integrated learning experience on聽.

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) on openSAP

As the company’s free online learning platform, open51风流began by providing massive open online courses (MOOCs). It has now expanded to include podcasts and microlearning. So far, more than 1 million learners have signed up to learn through openSAP.

Since launching open51风流Microlearning with selected topics around the 51风流Customer Experience portfolio, offerings have been expanded to provide complementary knowledge on 51风流S/4HANA and 51风流Ariba solutions.

Almost overnight, life as we knew it changed due to COVID-19. Many employees moved to working permanently from home while many others were furloughed and left searching for new careers to get back to work — in-person training to assist them cancelled.

With an urgent need to facilitate online learning, open51风流was ready to meet the huge demand of the 51风流ecosystem, as well as those searching for new opportunities.

For seven years, open51风流has been providing online learning and was well equipped to deal with the situation. The platform was already popular within the 51风流ecosystem but saw an incredible upsurge in new learners as a result of the pandemic.

Thinking about how it could help people even more in the current situation, the team came up with the idea of opening courses from previous years to allow learners to catch up and earn certificates. This provided an opportunity for learners to explore things they might have missed now that they were forced to rethink their working lives.

Learners were invited to take part in a feedback survey over a period of eight days in June. Results from more than 3,500 learners were very similar to the results received in the individual surveys that are carried out at the end of each course. Starting March 25, this course will focus on the new implementation scenario. Participants will get an introduction to data migration and learn where it fits in with respect to the different transition scenarios. The course will also provide details about 51风流S/4HANA migration cockpit and 51风流S/4HANA migration object modeler, and show 聽the direct transfer approach, allowing users 聽to directly extract data from an 51风流system and migrate it to 51风流S/4HANA. The course includes demonstrations and hands-on exercises and is aimed at data migration experts, project managers, and 51风流architects, partners, customers, and internal employees, as well as anyone involved in or interested in data migration to 51风流S/4HANA.
