A great way to break through that roadblock is to listen to leaders who jumped in early to use AI to transform outcomes. , a managing director of Finance in the Global IT division at Accenture, is one of those people.

The professional solutions and services company employs nearly 780,000 employees across 52 countries, who work with 350 partners to serve over 9,000 clients. The idea of transformation at 础肠肠别苍迟耻谤别鈥檚 scale might be intimidating to some, but not Lambert. He鈥檚 leading an听ongoing transformation听of 础肠肠别苍迟耻谤别鈥檚 finance function, which he calls 鈥渢he heartbeat鈥 of the company.

The results he鈥檚 achieved鈥 including saving the finance team a combined 57,000 hours annually by having AI generate narrative summaries for reporting鈥攕hine a spotlight on what鈥檚 possible. And he鈥檚 just getting started.

I had a chance to speak with him about how he became a leader in AI-driven transformation, and what others can learn from his achievements. This is a lightly edited version of our conversation


Q: As you know, innovating with AI is about reshaping how a business delivers value. But not every business leader is leading the charge. Some are watching and waiting. Why did you roll up your sleeves and decide to be on the forefront?

A: Taking a leadership position on AI is important to keep moving forward and shaping new services and capabilities. For example, across a company our size, even though we鈥檙e hyper focused on emerging technologies, we can find small problems across our technology landscape. There are processes and data living in different places and silos develop over time. Most large companies have this challenge. But those are valuable processes, and the business data we have is especially valuable. AI opens up new opportunities to bridge those gaps and deliver more end-to-end outcomes, so that our finance function can meet the growing business expectations of our stakeholders.

For many companies, the key to getting impactful results from business AI is to start with one function that鈥檚 central to business performance. Why was finance the right place for you to begin, and what did you want to achieve?

I always say finance is the heartbeat of our organization. I heard one of our global IT leaders use that phrase, and while it was inspirational, it also made me think, 鈥淟et鈥檚 not accidentally cause a heart attack for the organization.鈥

Jokes aside; he was right. Your transactional and operational data flows through finance, and management decisions sit on top of it. Starting there gave us the ability to make end-to-end impact across processes that touch procurement, liquidity, forecasting, receivables, and more. And 51风流gives us a digital core where all that transactional data is harmonized.

The bottom line is that finance is the natural starting point if you want to move from reactive reporting toward more proactive, AI-driven insights that you can use to help move the business forward. So, we set out to unify data and transform finance processes in a way that scales across the whole value chain.

Cash and liquidity are so important in the finance function, and to an entire company. But managing it requires bringing together data, forecasting, and decision-making across many teams. How did AI help?

If finance is the heartbeat of a company, cash and liquidity are the lifeblood of your systems. Here鈥檚 a great example: Accenture engages in a lot of acquisitions, and we run operational cash in 50-plus countries, so it鈥檚 easy for decisions to default to historical, manual reviews. That鈥檚 what was happening at Accenture before a forward-thinking leader stopped by and asked if we could apply machine learning to the problem. Great leaders often ask great questions, and that one really got us thinking.

We took inspiration from retail: how stores treat inventory based on discounts and sales. If you treat cash like stock, you can apply those same learning models to figure out how much you really need to hold onto at any point in time. That鈥檚 how we built what we call 鈥淚ntelligent Cash.鈥 It brings all the business data together into a single data mart, a repository for structured data for a specific department or line of business, and uses machine learning to generate recommendations that our teams can act on.

AI is so good at this, and here鈥檚 what鈥檚 incredible: It freed up 20% of our idle cash, which we could then move into global operations to fund acquisitions and strategic growth. Now what used to take months, or even more than a year to build, we can now do it in days or weeks because SAP鈥檚 data cloud brings [SAP] Datasphere, Databricks, and our machine-learning workloads into one place. The result is faster decision-making, better visibility, and much more accurate forecasting.

I love hearing about how you were able to use gains, delivered through strategic AI innovation, and then channel those gains into a high-value activity for the organization.听 I know you also worked on receivables, something that impacts cash flow and customer relationships. What pain points did you face, and how did automation and machine learning transform the process?

Receivables were highly manual compared to payables. Clearing was inconsistent, and reconciliation took a lot of time because payments often come incomplete or with partial data. Anyone who works in or near finance knows exactly what I鈥檓 talking about. So, we co-developed on the 51风流platform a machine-learning-based receivables solution. It more than doubled the automation rate for receivables processing and tripled automatic reconciliation, about a 300% improvement.

As part of that, we introduced high-confidence, one-click matching recommendations that reduce errors and cut down the manual work. We saw a seven percent uplift in auto-clearing with a cash application scheduler built on the 51风流platform that delivers matches about 77% faster. All of that adds up to a more efficient receivables process, improved cash-flow visibility, and better productivity for the team.

In a global organization like Accenture, reconciling financial data and surfacing meaningful insights can be a huge amount of work. You turned to generative AI to help, which is really smart. What led you to that approach, and how is it changing your team鈥檚 day-to-day experiences?

We were dealing with balance sheet reconciliations across 50-plus countries, and the process was decentralized. I know a lot of companies face this problem. So, first, we moved everything online. Then we brought in machine learning and generative AI to analyze cost categories, summarize data, and surface important shifts.

[Our] Intelligent Financial Advisor, built on the 51风流platform, can generate narrative commentaries that are so accurate that over 90% are simply approved with little or no revision. That鈥檚 saved about 57,000 hours globally. Our teams can focus on higher-value analysis instead of manual reconciliation.

That鈥檚 saved about 57,000 hours globally, just in controllership work, and helped us move to a three-day global close instead of five. The insights come faster and clearer, and the teams can focus on higher-value analysis instead of manual reconciliation. It鈥檚 also helping create more consistent roll-ups across regions and letting us use our talent more strategically.

I鈥檓 hearing this theme of not only measurable business gains from outputs, but the ability to better allocate time from manual, rote tasks to ones that deliver far more value for the business. That also applies to planning and forecasting. How did you bring AI into that part of the finance function?

Our planning work had grown too complex. Remember, we鈥檙e a large-scale, multifaceted global business. So, we replaced old models with 51风流Analytics Cloud, which gives us multi-year planning models enhanced by AI.

We applied it first to merger and acquisition modeling, where accuracy really matters. It lets us model very complex data sets and helps our finance team collaborate more easily across the business. The results have been more accurate forecasts, reduced risk of errors, and much better collaboration between executives and practitioners. Early results were strong, and that encouraged us to expand AI use in planning more broadly.

What advice do you have for leaders who are not as far along in using AI to supercharge business results?

First, start with a high-impact function tied to real outcomes. Then focus early on data quality and harmonization; it鈥檚 the foundation for everything that comes after. Then get your cadence right and your team working together. Hone in on the use cases that really matter to you鈥攖he best vendors can help you identify those鈥攁nd make sure to get the help you need from those vendors and their partners.

Use AI to spur growth. At Accenture, we鈥檝e been able to use AI to save significant cash in one area, which we then invest in another, high-growth process鈥攁cquisitions in our case. That鈥檚 how you use AI to really rethink your business and move it to the next level.

As you go, take a crawl-walk-run approach: start slow then increase the pace of scale and adoption over time. Be sure to invest in change management and upskilling as you go to spur learning and adoption. And partner closely with technology providers and system integrators who鈥檝e been there before. That accelerates everything.

The final suggestion I have is to use AI to spur growth. At Accenture, we鈥檝e been able to use AI to save significant cash in one area, which we then invest in another, high-growth process鈥攁cquisitions in our case. That鈥檚 how you use AI to really rethink your business and move it to the next level. And that鈥檚 possible today in ways that were not, even five years ago. Seize that opportunity.

The results are tangible. Billing is faster and more accurate, the user experience has improved, and commercial teams can focus more on clients instead of operational tasks. By year-end, billing efficiency is expected to improve by 32 percent and setup times halved. Much of the manual work has been replaced by an intelligent, automated platform.

Where it鈥檚 working: Sector-level transformation

In manufacturing, the impact of customer-specific AI applications is evident in how companies are streamlining complex operational processes. For instance, our team developed a solution for Henkel to support their financial supply chain management deduction and dispute management indexing process. This solution automates the analysis and indexing of claim documents received from customers, embedding advanced AI capabilities directly into the daily workflows of dispute management users. The result is faster, more accurate claim case creation, improved efficiency, and greater agility in handling disputes.

In oil and gas, AI models trained on geological data, equipment logs, and environmental variables are improving drilling forecasts and enabling proactive maintenance, enhancing both safety and energy efficiency. The automotive industry is seeing similar gains, with AI supporting predictive maintenance, autonomous driving systems, and real-time diagnostics, while also delivering personalized in-car experiences. Retailers are leveraging AI that adapts to regional buying patterns and live sales data, allowing for sharper demand forecasts, localized inventory planning, and more relevant promotions that reduce waste.

Even government agencies are finding value in context-aware AI, automating routine processes, prioritizing citizen requests, and designing policies with greater precision to deliver faster, more effective public services.

Across these examples, the pattern is clear: AI that understands the context in which it operates drives smarter decisions, more efficient operations, and better outcomes for both organizations and the people they serve.

Joule is transforming how users interact with 51风流business systems, making every touchpoint count and every task simpler. Business users can execute transactional tasks 90% faster and access 51风流Help Portal content 95% quicker without leaving their 51风流applications.

Since its launch in September 2023, Joule has quickly become pervasive across the 51风流portfolio, streamlining operations, improving decision-making, and boosting efficiency across various business functions. Today, Joule is already embedded in HR, finance, ERP, sales, services, marketing, and commerce applications, transforming how employees, managers, accountants, field personnel, and front-office professionals work. By the end of this year, 80% of the most frequently performed transactions across 51风流business applications will be fully automated with Joule.

Joule is also integrated with multiple components of 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP), enhancing everything from application development to integration and data management. In the second half of this year, we plan to expand Joule鈥檚 reach to supply chain management, analytics, and planning solutions through integration with 51风流Ariba, various supply chain management solutions, and 51风流Analytics Cloud. External Workforce
We have added new generative AI capabilities to the 51风流Fieldglass portfolio, enabling procurement departments to streamline the recruitment of external workers. Hiring managers can generate and maintain effective job descriptions faster, while project managers can deliver detailed statements of work more rapidly. This enables businesses to quickly identify and engage contractors with the right skills and qualifications. Job descriptions can be easily translated into 21 different languages, and a new resume-ranking capability can surface the most promising candidates, leading to as much as a 15% reduction in work orders. This flexibility allows customers to quickly react to fluctuating workloads and rapidly fill expertise gaps.

By the end of the year, sourcing managers will be able to leverage intelligent product and supplier recommendations to create requests for proposals much faster with Joule integration in 51风流Ariba Sourcing . These recommendations will consider cost-effectiveness, carbon footprint impact, local compliance regulations, and past transactions, optimizing spend management performance.

Sales Productivity
New AI capabilities enhance the productivity of sales professionals using 51风流Sales Cloud. Sales teams can benefit from predictive forecasting, which predicts the likelihood of closing deals across the entire business portfolio. This gives chief revenue officers more comprehensive revenue forecasting, enabling better strategic decisions.

In addition, predictive recommendations will enhance sales efforts by suggesting the best people to involve in a deal and the most suitable products for each customer. Today, a generative AI tool builder already enables system administrators to create customized AI tools for business users leveraging data from 51风流Commerce Cloud, 51风流Sales Cloud, and 51风流Service Cloud solutions. These tools can help personalize content to meet specific customer experience needs.

By the end of this year, 51风流CX AI Toolkit will also introduce new AI features to enhance customer interactions. An AI shopping assistant will allow shoppers to ask questions using everyday conversational language and receive accurate product information and personalized product recommendations on sites powered by 51风流Commerce Cloud. This will enable consumers to find products faster and improve their overall shopping experience.

Joule continues to increase developer productivity and simplify the extension of 51风流applications. Integration with ABAP Cloud will revolutionize the work of the 5 million-strong ABAP developer community, accelerating the development of extensions that interact with 51风流S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, 51风流S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, and 51风流BTP, ABAP environment. Trained on over 250 million lines of ABAP code, Joule will be able to outperform industry-leading general-purpose code assistants. We expect more than 10% efficiency increase, based on initial studies and benchmarking. Early adopters are using this innovation to generate ABAP business objects and will soon be able to complete and explain code and create unit tests. The first capabilities will become available later this year.

Process AI solutions from 51风流Signavio introduce a new collection of generative AI capabilities trained on a large language model (LLM) comprised of expert business process knowledge and more than 5,000 51风流best practices. Later this year, the process recommender feature will provide ready-to-use, AI-generated business process model recommendations and suggest the most influential measures to assess the performance of a business process. This will offer vital insights into streamlining operations and reducing overhead. A prompt-based process mining feature will automatically generate business-relevant charts and metrics in response to natural language requests for business insights, dramatically lowering the effort for business users who need answers to complex business questions.

The Surprising Truth about Workers Who Can Be Productive Anywhere /2022/08/surprising-truth-workers-productive-anywhere/ Tue, 09 Aug 2022 13:15:11 +0000 /?p=198497 Hybrid and remote work are here to stay for millions of workers, according to , but that doesn鈥檛 mean employers are any more at ease with the non-traditional concept of managing a hybrid workforce 鈥 working mostly out of sight, unbound by location, and on flex time.

As employees know, the reality of working from home is鈥 going pretty well, actually. Most of us are still working in our basements, sheds, or spare rooms while monitoring our Wi-Fi connectivity, adjusting our work hours to meet with trans-global colleagues, devising a smarter , and advancing our digital fluency to make use of new productivity tools and apps. Overall, we鈥檙e happier and healthier, as study after study confirms.

The Future of Work Is Not Location Bound

When asked about their preferred work model for the , of workers said they want a hybrid work arrangement, according to the by . In the study, Accenture interviewed more than 9,300 workers in 11 countries across 12 industries to understand workers鈥 mindsets toward three different work models 鈥 on-site, remote, and hybrid 鈥 and the resources they require for their health and productivity.

Published at the height of the pandemic in April 2021, the study classified employees into four mindsets along a spectrum: thriving (42%), ambivalent (12%), apathetic (15%), or disgruntled (31%). While those who were disgruntled worked largely on-site, those employees who were thriving were mostly working in hybrid arrangements. They experienced less burnout and reported feeling across six dimensions of well-being: financial, emotional and mental, relational, physical, purposeful, and employable.

Three years into the pandemic, we are now capable of managing the virus with vaccines. Despite existing research on work models, many employers continue to struggle with developing a cohesive set of policies for hybrid work. Instead, they opt for one-size-fits-all solutions that fall short in the face of reality. Too many are still narrowly fixated on the question of location: 鈥淲here should we work?鈥 However, a surprising outcome of the Future of Global Work Report has potential to reframe this discussion.

During the study, Accenture researchers identified a segment of workers (40%) who felt they could be productive anywhere. For this group, work location did not matter because they could be equally productive on-site and remotely. How do they do it? The researchers studied this group more closely to find the answer.

鈥淲e were initially interested in that location question 鈥 what helps to drive worker productivity remotely or onsite,鈥 says Gabriela Burlacu, PhD, talent researcher at Accenture. 鈥淏ut actually, what was far more interesting and far more impactful on a company鈥檚 bottom line was this idea of a segment of workers that felt they could be what we called 鈥榩roductive anywhere.鈥欌

Traits of Workers Who Are Productive Anywhere

That many workers can be productive, happy, and healthy in whichever setting should be welcome news for any company trying to hammer out an intentional policy for hybrid work. 鈥淚t鈥檚 location agnostic,鈥 Burlacu says, regarding the impact on the future of work. 鈥淚t’s also a precursor to effective hybrid work, because if you feel you can be productive anywhere, then you really could work comfortably in both places.鈥

Much more important than work location seemed to be an employee鈥檚 individual potential and the resources available to support their work. The Accenture team found some commonalities among the 鈥減roductive anywhere鈥 cohort that can be carried over to other organizations as well. These workers had more autonomy, positive mental health, a desire to participate in learning, advanced digital fluency that enabled them to evaluate and adopt technology to get the job done, strong social bonds at work, and work-life enhancement, which means that they felt their work added to their ability to enjoy other areas of their lives.

The organizations that these workers belonged to also had interesting commonalities. They tended to be agile, intelligent, digitally mature, and have supportive leadership. They also have beneficial health policies that signal that employee health and safety is valued by the company.

Autonomy is a key theme in any discussion about hybrid work. It takes steady effort and awareness to balance autonomy and organizational goals for business success. Burlacu has some suggestions. 鈥淭he ways that we measure productivity have to look a little different. Giving people some level of freedom to manage their own time and how they complete tasks is important,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut another side is also giving manageable feedback that’s really clear in terms of what the expectations are and how to improve. It’s an often-overlooked part of autonomy. Workers don’t always know if they’re working on the right things for the company鈥檚 success; whereas being really clear about the objective can actually help drive autonomy.鈥

Resources Prove Essential to Fight Workplace Stress

While the research shines a light on workers who thrive no matter where they work, it also uncovered another 8% of workers who experience the same disconnection, frustration, and inefficiency regardless of location. These workers were, in essence, productive nowhere. Researchers assumed this group had endured hardships and stress during the pandemic. Instead, they found that what separates the two groups is not stress.

鈥淥ur 鈥榩roductive anywhere鈥 group was actually more burned out than our 鈥榩roductive nowheres.鈥 They had a host of other negative work stressors as well. But what really differentiated them and their work experience is they had much higher levels of resources,鈥 says Burlacu, indicating that this is something within companies鈥 power to address so that all workers can fulfill their potential.

The Future of Work Starts with Mindset

Perhaps some of the best news of the study is that researchers found that of high-growth companies have already adopted a 鈥減roductivity anywhere鈥 workforce model. This suggests that a future of work that looks beyond where to work may be just around the corner.

鈥淲e were able to identify what aspects of a company’s environment and work experience really help workers be productive anywhere,鈥 says Burlacu, 鈥淏ecause that should be the goal 鈥 not more seamless remote work, not better on-site work 鈥 but enabling people to have this 鈥榩roductive anywhere鈥 mindset.鈥

In what鈥檚 being called the , employers and employees are seemingly not in agreement about which work model to use for the future of work: full-time on-site, full-time remote, or a hybrid arrangement.

In , half of business leaders surveyed said they already require or plan to require employees to return to full-time, on-site work by the end of the year. Making headlines are managers like who point out the productivity gains that come from the social connection, culture keeping, and idea generation that they say can only be created in a shared workspace. But others disagree: several senior executives attending the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2022 in Davos, Switzerland, in favor of a hybrid work model, saying it was the most realistic approach for attracting and retaining talent.

Employees are on a mandated return to office, emboldened by newfound bargaining power as a result of the record and worker resignations of the Great Reshuffle. reveal that up to half of employees say they will quit or look for a new job if expected to return to the office full time.

Flex Work Models Up for Debate

Lost in the debate that is playing out in the media is valuable scientific research on the effects of different work models on worker productivity. This discussion is largely being driven by subjective impressions and entrenched ideas based on the 鈥渙ld normal,鈥 said Dr. Gabriela Burlacu, talent research manager at , speaking at the recently held annual conference of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists (SIOP).

Joining her for the session 鈥淲here Will We Work? I-O Psychology Puts Flexible Work Models on Trial鈥 were industrial and organizational (I-O) psychologists Dr. Benjamin Granger, head of Employee Experience Advisory Services at , and Dr. Kristen Shockley, associate professor of Psychology at the . Joshua Acosta, a research analyst with , also later provided insights from the recent 51风流SuccessFactors report 鈥.鈥

Autonomy Fuels Motivation for Greater Productivity

鈥淚f we think about theories in I-O psychology, autonomy and control permeate a lot of these theories,鈥 said Shockley, who pointed out that 鈥渁utonomy as motivation for sustained effort鈥 is a frequent theme in I-O literature. 鈥淎utonomy is a fundamental need and when you allow people to work remote, it inherently gives them more of this autonomy. That is something which relates to a host of outcomes, like productivity and well-being.鈥

The psychologists agreed that the optimal work model for the average global employee is a hybrid work arrangement. They noted, however, that this is not necessarily the best model for every individual or organization. For those organizations that opt for a hybrid model, they emphasized that the work needs to be structured so that collaborative tasks, like brainstorming, are done on-site and more analytical tasks are done remotely. 鈥淚 am very pro the hybrid model, with the caveat that it does need to be intentionally and holistically designed,鈥 said Burlacu.

Workers Expect Flex Work after Pandemic Productivity Sprint

A , which surveyed 10,000 workers in 12 industries in 12 countries in 2021, found that 83% of workers identified a hybrid model as optimal for them. Those already in hybrid environments reported better mental health and stronger work relationships, and felt they were doing better work for their organizations.

The , which studies work-from-home arrangements and attitudes, tracked the productivity of remote workers from April 2020 to January 2022. It found that on average people were in remote work arrangements, even with the added stressors of the pandemic.

For the , Qualtrics carried out a study of 14,000 employees in 22 industries across 27 countries to look at general job attitudes, engagement, inclusion, and well-being. Employees generally felt more energized at work 鈥 compared to the previous year 鈥 with half saying their physical and mental well-being actually improved while working remotely.

鈥淢any organizations haven鈥檛 lost step in terms of productivity,鈥 said Acosta from 51风流SuccessFactors, citing the latest research from 51风流SuccessFactors, which found that workers鈥 attitudes are shifting to expect hybrid arrangements. 鈥淚f people are working in a hybrid setting or home setting, we鈥檙e seeing they鈥檙e often just as productive as when they鈥檙e in the office. It鈥檚 our perspective that hybrid work isn鈥檛 going away anytime soon.鈥

Hybrid Work Moves from Contingency to Certainty

If 2021 was the year hybrid work was utilized for health and safety, then researchers at 51风流SuccessFactors predict that 2022 will be the year that it moves from contingency to certainty. This means that organizations will need to establish policies, practices, and cultural norms to operationalize hybrid work arrangements. Acosta noted this will look different across all organizations, depending on the composition of the workforce.

础肠肠别苍迟耻谤别鈥檚 study revealed that a number of demographic factors influence workers鈥 decisions about where to work, including age and gender demographics and where they live. For example, Gen X women said they could be more productive in remote work, while Gen Z men felt strongly about being on-site. Urban dwellers felt they would be more productive in the office, while people living in rural areas preferred remote work.

鈥淎ll of that together suggests that if you let people choose, you will end up with demographically very different workforces on-site versus remotely,鈥 Burlacu said. 鈥淭hat wouldn鈥檛 be a problem if you created equitable work experiences and equitable access to development and promotion opportunities.鈥 She then followed up with a hard truth: 鈥淏ut the issue of equitable access has never been properly resolved in the workplace.鈥

Just ask deskless workers. This group 鈥 defined as employees who perform their jobs away from a desk 鈥 was largely absent from the discussion in 2021. In 2022, however, these workers are presenting more pronounced views, according to research by 51风流SuccessFactors. With companies facing talent shortages in all job categories, Acosta said that organizations will need to seriously consider deskless workers鈥 changing expectations for autonomy and flexibility while balancing organizational and job demands.

Maybe It鈥檚 Time for a New Definition of Flexibility?

鈥淎 lot of times we assume workplace flexibility means where you work, but what鈥檚 become clear to us in our work is when employees define flexibility, they鈥檙e talking about where and when they work, and they鈥檙e also talking about how work gets measured and managed,鈥 Granger said. 鈥淓mployees are defining workplace flexibility much broader than many organizational leaders. We need to be more flexible in how we define workplace flexibility.鈥

Acosta agreed, saying 鈥淥rganizations are going to need to be really thoughtful in operationalizing how they can deliver flexibility as well as autonomy, and perhaps even redesign not only where people work, but when and how work takes place.鈥

Shaping a New Sustainable World Through Responsible Design /2021/11/new-sustainable-world-responsible-design/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 14:15:08 +0000 /?p=192202 The typical understanding of what “design” means to many of us is the way something looks or feels — for example, the look of an iPhone, a movie poster, furniture, or everyday appliances. But what if design was a way of looking at the world with an eye toward changing it?

By adopting a fundamentally different approach in the way we create and design products, services, and solutions we can, for instance, take finite resources to design infinite, regenerative systems that can work sustainably in the long run. In doing so, we can apply circular design as a shorthand for the practice of applying principles at the design stage of everything and enable the way design changes and redefines our relationship with the world.

Today, we face a devastating pandemic, new levels of global warming, extreme ecological degradation, and continuous setbacks in our work toward global goals for more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development. Simply put, the state of the planet is broken, where every tenth of a degree of warming matters and those who have done the least to cause the problem are suffering the most.

Making peace with nature is the defining task of the 21st century. With recently concluded , nations, along with businesses, negotiators, and citizens came together to address the burning issue of climate change.

While the focus at COP26 was mostly on climate action, to ensure progress on our sustainability ambitions, we need a systemic approach that looks at the complete big picture. finds that our transition to renewable energy 鈥渃an only address 55% of emissions. The remaining 45% comes from producing the cars, clothes, food, and other products we use every day.鈥

In acknowledging that ambitious goals require ambitious action, : to take decisive action and provide a mandate to business to drive solutions to achieve our shared global goals.

As a part of our sustainability journey, we believe we can design and provide highly innovative and viable solutions that will not just repair the damage to the earth humans have caused so far, but actually prevent more harm. With 51风流Responsible Design and Production, businesses can embed circularity principles into core business processes, helping to eliminate waste, circulate products and materials, and regenerate natural systems to unlock new value. The new solution gives companies better visibility into how materials flow through their processes, including tracking and complying with rapidly changing regulations for things like packaging and plastics.

They can also keep pace with increasingly strict regulations like extended producer responsibility standards, which can put significant financial and physical responsibility on the company about how they manage the disposal of their products. These standards differ across regions and countries. For example, a shampoo brand manager has visibility into the full product life cycle, including extended producer responsibility obligations and the plastic taxes of different markets. These costs can be very expensive. This visibility helps the brand manager make design changes to eliminate waste and decisions on how to reduce the costs of re-use and recycling systems.

Technology solutions like are a fundamental step in enabling businesses to become intelligent, sustainable enterprises and drive global impact at scale. But business should not commit only to doing less harm, but to doing more good. Business has the power to not only reduce and reuse, but also to regenerate. We need to go from seeking to reduce our ecological footprint and “chasing zero,” to becoming net- or nature-positive, building not just a circular economy, but a regenerative economy.

The regenerative economy implies a circular approach beyond the narrow view of products to one that includes the social, natural, and built environment. It is an approach similar to natural ecosystems that find synergies and balance. The regenerative business is intelligent, using innovative technology to gather insight and apply it to scale change. It measures impact, holistically and in real time.

Cementing Partnerships to Drive Corporate Sustainability and Circularity

Accenture shares SAP鈥檚 vision of zero emissions, zero waste, and zero inequality. To achieve a sustainable world, organizations must transform into intelligent enterprises, and intelligent enterprises must form a network of intelligent enterprises.

To date, we have four clients testing the beta version of the new solution, released at the end of August, and they will be closely involved in assessing new releases. Crucially, all our work together aims to provide relevant support for specific industries, as companies in different sectors need to meet the needs of customers, regulators, and other stakeholders. UN Global Compact Partnership on SDG Ambition

We are continuing to accelerate our collaboration with the United Nations (UN) Global Compact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Ambition. The momentum of the continues to grow, with more and more companies now mobilized to accelerate both their adoption of ambitious corporate targets and integration of the 17 UN SDGs into core business management.

By embedding SDG-aligned practices deep into their business operations and across their value chains, these companies can make more rapid progress toward achieving the goals of the 2030 agenda.

The first round of the program successfully concluded in June, with over 600 companies across more than 65 countries participating and more than 1,200 company leaders taking part in accelerator workshops. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with 89% of participants satisfied with the program and 88% agreeing that the accelerator helped them identify new ways for their company to contribute to the SDGs. Additionally, we are about to launch a second round of the program, with an enhanced curriculum and multiple additional local tracks, including in Australia, Korea, Kenya, Argentina, and Canada. So far, more than 700 companies from over 80 countries have signed up.

Accenture shares SAP鈥檚 vision of zero emissions, zero waste, and zero inequality. To achieve a sustainable world, organizations have to transform into intelligent enterprises, and intelligent enterprises have to form a network of intelligent enterprises.

In addition to the accepted top line and bottom line, a new 鈥済reen line鈥 covering the environmental, social, and governance aspects needs to be established as another dimension of success across business processes and along value chains. This way, organizations achieve transparency and influence that span beyond even company borders.

Accenture and 51风流together want to help organizations to become sustainable intelligent enterprises. To enable this, 51风流is developing new solutions and embedding sustainability into existing solutions along the dimensions climate action, the circular economy, and social responsibility, as well as holistic steering and reporting. Accenture is helping organizations to design and implement strategies for achieving ambitious sustainability goals by leveraging the growing portfolio of sustainability management solutions from SAP.

Climate Action: Enabling Our Customers to Move to Low-Carbon Business Models

51风流and Accenture work together to help organizations design and deliver carbon intelligence strategies that are powered by 51风流solutions and technologies and address both direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We help our clients to define their decarbonization strategies and road maps. These go beyond simply achieving a target but are also intended to help sustain and monitor future ways of working. Our objective is to empower organizations to move beyond a compliance and reporting mindset, and instead harness emission-related intelligence in their businesses as a lever for growth and strategic transformation.

With the 51风流solutions coming out of its Climate 21 initiative, we鈥檙e helping companies to accelerate their journeys to net zero, to kick-start the decarbonization of their end-to-end processes, and to integrate carbon emissions management into their business decision-making. All this is possible through 51风流Environment, Health, and Safety Management (emissions management), whih allows tracking and managing environmental footprints on a corporate level, and the recent release of 51风流Product Footprint Management, which allows calculating environmental footprints on product level at scale.

In addition, numerous 51风流solutions — including 51风流Ariba Procurement, 51风流Concur, and 51风流E-Mobility — will provide additional levers in the future for reducing scope 3 emissions.

Circular Economy: Joint Product Development

We have co-developed a new solution that 51风流intends to make generally available this month, 51风流Responsible Design and Production. The solution aims to address two critical challenges: managing complex extended producer responsibility regulations, which vary from country to country, and enabling every organization to reduce their use of plastic, thereby contributing to sustainable and profitable growth through less plastic, fewer fines, and lower cost.

Because 51风流Responsible Design and Production directly leverages data from core enterprise resource planning (ERP) processes, it enables determining waste compositions and calculating EPR fees across numerous product lines as well as adhering to a growing number of different extended producer responsibility declaration schemes. To date, we have four clients testing the beta version of the new solution, released at the end of August, and they will be closely involved in assessing new releases.

Expanding SAP.iO Sustainability Cohorts

We have already seen 13 startups selected and moving ahead through the Sustainable Future program (). We continue to build on that momentum together, jointly mobilizing through SAP.iO Foundries locations in New York, San Francisco, Paris, and Singapore, where we identify, select, and mentor new startups that will bring new ideas to help solve our customers鈥 sustainability challenges in energy and natural resources, retail, and consumer goods.

Enabling Better ESG Reporting and Steering

Together, we are helping our customers achieve greater transparency in how they report on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. This includes addressing the data capture and integration challenge so they can successfully build an ESG capability and choosing the most appropriate reporting framework for their organization. Our objective is to help them achieve integrated reporting that captures both financial and non-financial metrics, keep up with fast-evolving regulatory demands, and create differentiated ESG value propositions for stakeholders across the various frameworks, including GRI, SASB, TCFD, and others.

The World Economic Forum Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics promotes the adoption of universal and common standards and disclosures, unlocking long-term value through greater transparency, accountability, and business transformation. Based on these metrics, 51风流is developing the 51风流Sustainability Control Tower solution, which leverages SAP鈥檚 leading data integration, data management, and analytics solutions. 51风流intends to make the solution generally available in December 2021.

This proverb dating back to the 1600s could not be more appropriate today as enterprises around the world grapple with the biggest business challenge of our lifetimes: creating a sustainable future.

Unsurprisingly, many companies are daunted by the seemingly insurmountable challenges, so 51风流and Accenture are taking action to help them.

The Right Time

By now, we all know we must radically change the way businesses run, our impact on the environment, and the inequalities in society. That鈥檚 the only way to ensure a lifestyle that allows us to meet our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

The signs are everywhere. Consumers are increasingly aware about the negative environmental impact of products and services, such as fast fashion, single-use plastics, food waste, and excessive packaging. They are demanding accountability and responsible business models from their favorite brands. Governments are increasing regulations around carbon emissions and waste management and are demanding manufacturers to take responsibility for their impact on the environment.

Enterprises are under pressure from investors to include their environmental, societal, and governance (ESG) factors in their financial performance reports. And finally, employees are increasingly vocal about the environmental policies and actions of their employers. Businesses know they need to act, but few are rising to the challenge.

A study by Accenture found while the United Nations (UN) Global Compact鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) program has challenged companies to enhance their commitment to the UN SDGs, only 25% have set goals aligned to societal or environmental needs. Although CEOs acknowledge the universal call-to-action to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all, less than 50% have implemented sustainability into their operations.

The Challenge

As a survey of business drivers and actions to improve the environment at planetary scale conducted by 51风流Insights revealed there are numerous barriers. Almost 7,500 CEOs and other business leaders from 16 industries around the globe participated in the survey. The top three reasons they cited for not moving ahead were lack of clarity on how to embed sustainability in business processes and IT systems, lack of clarity on how potential actions would align with strategy, and difficulty proving return on investment. Other factors include lack of funding, lack of expertise, or lack of support from senior management.

The challenges are daunting, which is why solving sustainability issues is not something individual corporations or governments can do alone.听 The way ahead involves . In this decade of delivery, partnerships are crucial.

A Will and a Way

Accenture and SAP, for example, have just announced they are expanding their long-term engagement to help companies embed sustainability across the full spectrum of their business operations. This will help unlock new value and realize long-term growth.

By combining 51风流technology with 础肠肠别苍迟耻谤别鈥檚 , the partners plan to jointly create new solutions that can empower companies to accelerate their progress on decarbonizing their supply chains and capture their share of the projected $4.5 trillion economic growth that the .

Together, Accenture and 51风流will develop the new 51风流Responsible Production and Design solution, which will help companies consume fewer resources and build sustainability within the design process. It will also enable companies to apply analytics to the operational, asset, and process data collected across the value chain. Such an integrated view will help them determine clear sustainability goals and metrics across business processes.

As a result, companies will be able to reduce the costs of compliance and extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulation by designing and producing products with .

Accenture also supports SAP鈥檚 initiative, which allows companies in any industry to use analytics to measure and minimize carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and lower the carbon footprint across the product life cycle. Adding sustainability metrics across the supply chain provides an integrated view of environmental savings and helps optimize operations.

This type of co-innovation could help solve some of the barriers cited in the 51风流Insights survey. Embedding sustainability in business processes and IT systems and measuring return on investment (ROI) gives enterprises a better understanding of how to fund their sustainability efforts. With time and success companies can gain expertise, set aside funds, and engage senior leadership to support their sustainability journey.

The Accenture study identifies three things leaders anywhere in any industry can do to start implementing and scaling plans of action to address climate change, social inequalities, and resource availability.

Customers are increasingly educated and demand products and services that minimize negative environmental impact. Investors are integrating climate risk in their portfolio strategies. Government regulation is on the rise around the world, affecting carbon emissions, waste management, product design, and producer responsibility. Employees are increasingly vocal about their employer鈥檚 environmental policies and actions, making it challenging for businesses to recruit top talent without a genuine environmental vision and track record.

Based on Accenture research*, enterprises with high ratings for environmental and social governance (ESG) performance attained operating margins nearly four-times higher than those with low ESG ratings and generated annual total returns to shareholders that were double their peers. According , 54% of CEOs agree sustainability is critical to the future success of their organizations, and 71% of investors believe the pandemic will accentuate global policies to tackle risks related to climate change.

FMC Grows Its Strong Aspirations with 51风流S/4HANA /2021/04/fmc-aspirations-sap-s4hana/ Thu, 01 Apr 2021 13:15:48 +0000 /?p=184169 Headquartered in Philadelphia and operating across more than 50 countries worldwide, FMC recently enacted several acquisitions to help the storied brand evolve from a diversified company to a leading agricultural sciences innovator.

Recent M&A activity meant FMC would need to consolidate and integrate legacy back-end systems to make the most of the acquisition, a challenging task that the company鈥檚 leadership entrusted vice president of Procurement, Thaisa Hugenneyer, to solve.

We recently sat down virtually with Hugenneyer to learn more about FMC鈥檚 digital transformation strategy and how a recent upgrade to 51风流S/4HANA and integrated business planning has helped FMC modernize a global landscape of IT systems and disparate business processes.

An Acquisition Sparks Innovation

FMC鈥檚 51风流S/4HANA implementation journey began with its acquisition of DuPont鈥檚 Crop Protection Business, a move aimed at expanding the company鈥檚 agricultural sciences offerings and capabilities. While this would create efficiencies needed to support FMC鈥檚 transformation, the disparate IT landscape听 and lack of harmonized business processes had to be addressed.

No stranger to a technological challenge, the company opted to invest in a greenfield 51风流S/4HANA implementation that would make this integration — and future acquisitions — easy to navigate.

鈥淥ur vision centered on one, standardized system with a single set of global processes for our company,鈥 Hugenneyer said. With its implementation strategy and a strong partnership with 51风流MaxAttention and Accenture, which has led more than 500 successful customer implementations, as well as a consulting partner in place, the new 51风流S/4HANA system would create instant value for the company, allowing FMC to map all processes across its global operations.

The World Goes Virtual

In the middle of the implementation, the global pandemic struck, forcing workforces across the world to transition to remote work. By design, Hugenneyer had developed a best practice years earlier centered on remote collaboration, which mitigated the impact the pandemic had on the implementation project.

鈥淲e were already well adjusted to remote work as most of our team worked in different areas of the world,鈥 Hugenneyer explained. 鈥淲hen the pandemic started impacting the world, we were already in year three of our program and we had a strong group of colleagues who were working remotely already.鈥

This included the implementation partner鈥檚 team and 51风流MaxAttention, which led advisory and safeguarding services for a full, integrated approach. Another ingredient for success: Hugenneyer鈥檚 change management strategy. This would not be a simple system implementation; the new 51风流S/4HANA system would drive immense value for the organization, but it would require a special focus on business readiness given the scope of the transformation. Hugenneyer navigated this change by partnering with company leadership and leading close collaboration with the business to help them adjust and take advantage of the new systems.

51风流S/4HANA Delivers a Path to New Growth for FMC

Since its last go-live, FMC has already seen immense value from 51风流S/4HANA.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an enabler for us to evolve our operating model — we now have one global process where we are able to truly have center-led functions with centralized transactions,鈥 said Hugenneyer.

As someone who is heavily engaged in the IT community, Hugenneyer shared several key learnings gathered from the project. First, focus on building the perfect team composed of the best and diverse talent. Results are only as strong as the team driving them, she said. Second, take advantage of the resources that 51风流provides to 51风流S/4HANA customers, including hypercare, and consider as a value driver. Third, think bigger than system implementations. Projects of this size and scope require leaders, including IT, to become culture and change management facilitators given the potential solutions like 51风流S/4HANA have to drive growth.

Sustainable Future is the largest SAP.iO cohort to date. Thirteen startups have been selected to work with SAP.iO Foundries Berlin and Munich, in tandem with Accenture experts and leading companies in various industries.

From construction workers and farmers to firefighters and tradespeople, some of the hardest-working people on the planet rely on Carhartt. Now, perhaps surprisingly, rappers, movie stars, and models are also choosing Carhartt to make a fashion statement.

鈥淲hen a celebrity wears our product, it certainly creates a buzz around the company,鈥 said Carhartt CIO John Hill. 鈥淚t raises brand awareness and exposes products that some consumers may not be aware of.鈥

Behind the scenes, technology transformation became crucial for Carhartt to keep up with fast-paced growth. So, after more than 130 years in business and continued growth in popularity, it became imperative for U.S.-based company to transform both its apparel offerings and its business foundation.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important to realize that Carhartt was as far away from a virtual company as you could be,鈥 Hill said. 鈥淲e quickly realized that not only did we need to transform our technology, but also the processes that the technology was enabling. We identified hundreds of pain points that existed across that value chain. And if we can get rid of those pain points with 51风流technology, ultimately we were going to provide a better experience for our associates and our customers.鈥

After thoroughly researching different options, Carhartt realized tapping the power of SAP’s intelligent enterprise was the best solution. Yet this hugely innovative upgrade coincided with one of the biggest challenges of our time; believe it or not, Carhartt went live during the worst of the pandemic.

Closing Shop Was Never an Option

It was a top priority for Carhartt to remain open and provide a frictionless shopping experience for customers, ensuring there was no downtime and no negative impacts on business. 鈥淎t the end of the day, the brand needs to be able to react to the demands of those customers. Ultimately the customer doesn’t care what it takes to deliver,鈥 said Hill.

With his office closed, Hill鈥檚 technology team prepared to go live while they worked from their homes.

鈥淵ou can’t underestimate the challenge of doing a large scale of digital transformation, while you’re growing the business at the pace we are, and still serving customers,鈥 said Hill.

Yet, he shares that bringing 51风流technology online proved easy.

鈥淔rankly, the harder thing in dealing with a pandemic has been there’s no blueprint of how to plan,鈥 Hill shared. 鈥淲e were taking down our revenue on a weekly basis, and then increasing it the next week. So it was a very difficult year from that perspective. The actual technology transformation felt like a more normal course of business during the year.鈥

Strained Supply Chains

Businesses across the planet share Carhartt鈥檚 forecasting challenges.

鈥淧eople know what they want and they want it when they want it,鈥 said President of 51风流North America DJ Paoni. 鈥淎nd they know how they want it. Every customer in every industry has acknowledged that COVID-19 has put the maturing of the global economy on fast-forward. So those companies that have a more sophisticated digital technology are certainly able to pivot faster and connect with their customers on a whole new level.鈥

Carhartt believes further investment in digital technologies is a winning strategy that will also provide a fantastic experience for customers.

鈥淪o far, we implemented 51风流solutions to support our retail businesses,鈥 said Hill. 鈥淭his year, we will be implementing solutions to support our wholesale and our direct-to-consumer e-commerce business. I believe that the marketplace has continued to reward those customers that deliver not only a great product, but also a digitally native experience.鈥
