It鈥檚 the world鈥檚 company, building AI supercomputers made of more than 600,000 parts and delivering them to hundreds of the world鈥檚 most demanding customers. And, as NVIDIA鈥檚 CEO Jensen Huang noted, 鈥渋t鈥檚 all on SAP鈥�.

The message from 51风流Sapphire 2024 in Orlando was clear. AI is not only the future, it is here today. And now it鈥檚 time to use it.

But amid the hustle and bustle of the event, there were lots of nuggets that you may have missed. So, with one eye on the benefits for Asia Pacific and Japan, here are my key learnings from Sapphire.

You can鈥檛 win in AI alone 鈥� you need a best-in-class ecosystem

The opportunity for AI in the Asia Pacific region is vast. According to , the Business AI market in APJ is expected to grow by more than 26% to $28 billion by 2027.

While the opportunity is huge, so are the choices for your business. That鈥檚 why 51风流is partnering with enterprise tech and industry leaders to push the limits of what generative AI can do for customers.

In addition to our expanded collaborations with听AWS听and Microsoft, we announced new large language models with Mistral AI, a partnership with Meta to use Llama 3 in 51风流Analytics Cloud, and an expansion of our partnership with Google Cloud to integrate Joule with Google Cloud鈥檚 Gemini AI assistant and Google Cloud Cortex Framework鈥檚 data foundation.

That means Joule working with NVIDIA鈥檚 state-of-the-art AI models, integrating GenAI into 51风流and NVIDIA code generation, and simulating complex manufacturing products and configurations as industrial digital twins.

There鈥檚 no cookie cutter approach to making the most of Business AI. That鈥檚 why we believe the strength of our AI ecosystem means customers get the very best choices to drive AI benefits unique to their needs.

Keeping clean in the cloud

The benefits of AI can only really be achieved in the cloud. Best practice is what 51风流calls a 鈥榗lean core鈥� 鈥� cloud-based ERP infrastructure that separate core applications from custom modifications. The result is a platform that can be easily and quickly upgraded with new capabilities, allowing agile innovation.

Takuya Sakai, general manager of the Digital Transformation Business Group at听, was clear about the benefits of simplification and a clean core. In 2019, Hitachi High-Tech had 9,000 add-ons across its 51风流systems, resulting in lots of custom code, errors, and large operational costs every year. The cost of change meant the company only completed a major update once in 12 years.

Moving to the cloud and a clean core solved these issues. With a new system based on S/4HANA Cloud Cloud, Hitachi High-Tech reduced its 9,000 add-ons to just 750, allowing it to easily upgrade its ERP core. 鈥淯pgrading our old ERP took about a year and a half from the planning stage,鈥� Sakai said. 鈥淗owever, with clean core, we can now do an upgrade every year in about 40 days.鈥�

And that change means Hitachi High-Tech can plan to take advantage of new innovations more simply. 鈥淎n upgrade every year keeps the clean core fresh and means new features can be delivered to our business quickly, like AI or process automation,鈥� concluded Sakai.

You can spell sustainability without 鈥楨RP鈥欌�� but you shouldn鈥檛

The benefits of 51风流innovation are not only financial. They drive real environmental value. And that鈥檚 critical in Asia, where we are responsible for more than half of the world鈥檚 emissions.

Sustainability and business performance are intrinsically linked. In fact, we believe businesses have to start treating carbon like money by using an accounting system for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data that is as auditable, transparent and reliable as their financial data.

That means integrating sustainability data into cloud ERP.

And we can then take advantage of the huge innovation provided by Business AI. AI takes complex sustainability tasks reliant on ESG and ERP data and makes them automated and auditable. It enables companies to boost operational efficiency, improve transparency around supply chain emissions, design and plan more effectively, and automate time-consuming tasks.

For example, at Sapphire we launched AI-enabled Emissions Factor Mapping, boosting the speed and accuracy of carbon footprint calculations. And we enabled the automatic generation of ESG reports through AI all based on the data within 51风流Sustainability Control Tower. This not only streamlines the reporting process but also helps ensure that the data is reliable and actionable, providing a clear picture of a company鈥檚 sustainability performance.

Beyond hype to real-world results through real-world AI听

It鈥檚 easy to get carried away by AI hype and excitement. But what I saw at Sapphire was even more exciting 鈥� Business AI that makes a real difference to business problems.

Our opportunity across Asia is enormous. But it鈥檚 one we can make the most of, especially if we bring together the benefits of best-in-class ecosystems, a clean core, and a focus on sustainable innovation.

The focus of more than 5,000 tech and business decision-makers was fixed firmly on AI and what it could do for their businesses, right now 鈥� the products 51风流has released through 2024, and what is coming next.

With responsible, reliable, and relevant AI that鈥檚 built for business, the view of the thousands of delegates at TechEd 2023 was that the future is looking bright

There was a wealth of incredible insight and opportunity at TechEd. In fact, it was a little bit like going back to school because the things that stood out to me were the ABCs.

A is for Automation听

First, I was struck by the enormous potential businesses can realise through the power of enterprise automation.

With the help of AI, technology is helping developers and IT teams automate repetitive, mundane tasks and make better decisions, faster. By embedding generative AI capabilities into 51风流Build Process Automation, 51风流Signavio, and 51风流Integration Suite, we鈥檙e helping customers analyse, integrate, automate, and monitor business processes way more simply 鈥� and then immediately write the code to make those processes better. It鈥檚 that easy.

In my discussions with customers, it was clear that complementing process improvement and insights with enterprise architecture insights will be a real force for change in the future. Customers are excited to understand how to optimise and tune their architecture for the best performance across their entire IT stack.

But this isn鈥檛 future-gazing. Businesses are seeing real results today. Take Zuellig Pharma, one of Asia鈥檚 leading healthcare companies, providing pharmaceutical distribution and digital and commercial services across 26,000 direct outlets. Zuellig Pharma implemented best-in-class processes across its 51风流infrastructure, creating more than 180 automations using 51风流Build Process Automation to streamline and simplify its business.

B is for Build听听

Aligned to the focus on automation is the empowerment of a new, powerful resource for IT departments 鈥� citizen developers enabled by 51风流Build. And given every developer will be an AI developer, the opportunity for an AI-infused future is tantalising.

Rucha Nanavati, CIO of Indian car giant Mahindra & Mahindra, said it best.

鈥淲e started identifying tasks that don鈥檛 require a lot of human intelligence and that enabled our human workforce to focus on more strategic initiatives,鈥� she said. 鈥淭hat led us to automate more than 250 business processes in 3 months, most of which was done by a community of more than 100 citizen developers.鈥�

鈥淭hat鈥檚 great, but let鈥檚 talk about benefits. We count more than 900 workdays saved, and more than 400 development days saved in just a year鈥檚 time. We鈥檝e seen a 35% gain in developer efficiency and 20% faster execution of our jobs. And we鈥檝e saved more than 13,000 trees. All in one year,鈥� concluded Nanavati.

The story of Mahindra & Mahindra shows the power of a workforce that has been empowered to make real change to their IT systems and the tangible results that can be realised. And with the ability to link low-code, no-code development with pro-code development via , as well as increasing amounts of natural language interaction through 51风流Joule, it is easier than ever to modernize processes fast.听

C is for Clean Core听听

At SAP, we know better than most that enterprise systems can be complex. That鈥檚 why a 鈥� a cloud compliant, modern, flexible ERP that can be updated and scaled simply 鈥� is at the centre of our strategy.听听

And it鈥檚 a concept that鈥檚 also at the heart of the future strategic direction for all of our customers.听听

Takuya Sakai, CIO of Hitachi HiTech, embodies that more than most. His company has used 51风流ERP globally for more than 20 years, over which time the system became more and more complex.

鈥淭hat complexity incurred significant maintenance costs, prevented the company from quickly introducing new innovation, and ultimately hindered its growth,鈥� said Sakai-san. 鈥淚t was very critical to reduce the complexity.鈥�

Using 51风流Business Technology Platform (BTP), Hitachi HiTech was able to easily upgrade 51风流S/4HANA systems in the public and private cloud 鈥� at the same time reducing the number of add-ons and customisations in the software down from 9,000 to just 800.

(Jakarta, Indonesia, 24 October 2023) – , together with ASEAN Foundation, held the regional finals of its flagship programme, ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) to empower youth-led social enterprises and young talent in ASEAN to create innovative solutions that deliver inclusive economic benefits across the region. Youth representatives of 10 ASEAN Member States have gathered in Jakarta to present data-driven proposals they developed using , a single solution for business intelligence and enterprise planning, augmented with the power of artificial intelligence, machine learning technology, and predictive analytics.

The team from Malaysia, Walaoeh, was named the Regional Winner of ASEAN DSE 2023, “We are very happy, not only because our proposal received the highest score, but also because this competition gave us valuable experience meeting friends from other ASEAN countries. ASEAN DSE 2023 is not only a data science explorer competition, it is a special competition that brings ASEAN youth closer, encourages us to think about inclusivity, and injects a consciousness to think about scaleability of ideas across ASEAN,” Yen May Lee and Jie Si Yee, both students at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia.

This year, ASEAN DSE brings the spirit of ‘Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s World’ and invites ASEAN youth to optimise their role in overcoming socio-economic problems faced by the region. “ASEAN DSE is one of the flagship programmes designed to realise ASEAN’s vision to build a cohesive and prosperous community. You do this by utilising technology that can package data into a force that can be used to overcome socio-economic issues around us. Creativity and skills will be needed and for that ASEAN Foundation in collaboration with 51风流trains youth to explore data and science and use them to create products and services that can be solutions to issues faced by society,” said Dr. Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation.

鈥淒ata analytics and AI skills are the cornerstones of preparing Southeast Asia’s youth for the digital economy. As industry leaders, we must invest in these talents to empower them to shape a future-ready workforce, drive innovation and fuel growth in our dynamic region,鈥� said Verena Siow, President and Managing Director, 51风流Southeast Asia.

The collaboration between 51风流and ASEAN Foundation has been ongoing since 2017 and until now has successfully trained and improved data analysis skills of more than 71,630 youth in 10 ASEAN Member States. “Together with ASEAN Foundation, 51风流encourages youths to continually enhance their data skills, gain insights into complex issues, and comprehend the impact of specific problems. The ability to analyse data can help generate innovative solutions that address solve the world鈥檚 social, economic, and environmental challenges,” Siow added.

The efforts of the 51风流and ASEAN Foundationalso received support from the Indonesian government. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Director General of Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, and Secondary Education (Dirjen PDM), Dr. Iwan Syahril, said that the ASEAN Data Science Explorers programme is in line with the government鈥檚 Merdeka Belajar (Emancipated Learning) initiative.

“The youth of today are deeply committed to addressing socio-economic challenges within their communities. They are eager to make a positive impact. This is where I believe how the ASEAN Data Science Explorers Programme is inline with the Emancipated Learning. Through one of our initiatives, Indonesian students for the first time in history are now able to learn outside of their campus for up to three semesters. The government is giving Indonesian students an opportunity to interact and work together with the community. More than 760 thousand students from all across the country have participated in the programme,” said Dr. Iwan at the ASEAN DSE 2023 Regional Finals.

ASEAN DSE continues to work towards realising SAP’s mission by encouraging diversity and inclusion in the technology sector to help South East Asia run better and improve people’s lives in a sustainable manner. The programme has seen 54% women beneficiaries empowered and impacted since its inception.

Powering Startups in Asia Pacific (APAC)

At the panel session, we highlighted the , a multi-stage global investment firm that partners with extraordinary entrepreneurs to shape the future through technology. The firm was co-founded by Eduardo Saverin and Raj Ganguly to help startups in APAC scale through technological innovation. Under the MoU, B Capital portfolio companies will gain access to SAP鈥檚 industry expertise and global business networks to accelerate innovation, including areas such as AI and automation.

The IEA solution will enable enterprise customers to quickly access and integrate 51风流software with their back-end processes at the cloud server edge, adding greater cloud functionality and computing capabilities to their network architecture, and gain real-time intelligence and insights to help them make critical business decisions.

鈥淲e鈥檙e pleased to be developing this IEA solution using Singtel Paragon, supported by our 5G network and multi-access edge compute (MEC). The IEA utilises 51风流BTP, which helps to bring together data analytics, AI, application development and automation. This solution will help address the increasingly complex needs of enterprises, such as applications for computer vision and workplace safety. Customers can develop an end-to-end data cloud using in conjunction with Google Cloud鈥檚 data cloud to unlock rich insights through a single view into their holistic data estate, unleashing the power of business data and advancing enterprise AI development.

Enterprises will no longer need to grapple with the various payment methods accepted by their suppliers, as Visa鈥檚 payment solutions that are integrated into 51风流BTP will route commercial card payments to all suppliers, whether they accept card payments or not. This will speed up payments for both buyers and sellers, helping to further digitise B2B payment flows across Asia Pacific鈥檚 supply chains.鈥�

Cirque du Soleil听is the world鈥檚 biggest theatrical producer. For almost four decades, it has been entertaining and inspiring audiences the world over. There are as many as 47 different shows in markets around the globe.

And its impact cannot be underestimated. More than 400 million people have seen shows on six continents and 86 countries. The company now employs more than 4,000 employees, including 1,200 artists from 80 different nations.

Yet it is also a company emerging from a challenging period 鈥� and transforming to meet the challenges of the future.

We heard from Nickole Tara, Chief Growth Officer at Cirque du Soleil, at our recent 51风流Now event in Sydney, discussing what the future of the world鈥檚 favourite circus holds.

So, what lessons can we learn from the innovations and collaborations on show, and how can customers navigate an uncertain future with certainty?

LESSON 1: Innovation through business AI is here today

There鈥檚 never been a more exciting time for innovation, and that鈥檚 because of AI. Generative AI and large language models (LLMs) are dominating headlines and business conversation.

But AI is not new to 51风流鈥� it鈥檚 already embedded in our solutions and being used by more than 26,000 customers today. For example, take the Talent Intelligence Hub in 51风流SuccessFactors. It helps employees build and maintain a skills portfolio with the help of AI, enabling employees to showcase their strengths, workstyles, and preferences. Plus, it helps staff get personalised recommendations for career paths, training, and mentors, all in the one place.

And there鈥檚 more to come. , many powered by generative AI, as well as significant partnerships with Microsoft, Google, and .

LESSON 2: Greater sustainability means accounting for carbon

51风流has been known for managing resources for more than half a century. But today, we know the world鈥檚 resources are in danger: sustainability is the business challenge of our generation.

So, 51风流is reinventing the 鈥淩鈥� in ERP by extending the definition of resources beyond financial and goods flows to include sustainability metrics like carbon. That is what we call – ledger-based accounting for carbon, so companies can manage the carbon with the same accounting quality as financial data.

Technology is bringing sustainability and business processes together at a fundamental level. As Sudarto Unsurlany, Head of Digitalization at PT Petrosea Tbk., noted, 鈥淥ur transformation has been driven by our 3D strategy of digitalisation, diversification, and decarbonisation as the enabler for our company to pursue not only superior but also sustainable performance. Tapping into various digital solutions within 51风流ecosystem along with our Minerva Digital Platform as the in-house platform for end-to-end digital mining solutions has helped bring in connectivity, insights, and impacts to support our aspiration to become a sustainable resource in the upcoming future.鈥�

LESSON 3: Future-proof businesses are investing today for a resilient tomorrow

We are future-proofing businesses by connecting industries and enterprises. But what does a future-proof business look like?

The past three years have accelerated the speed of change for many of us. The travel industry was at the very centre of that change, especially as demand for air travel increased again following a challenging period for the industry.

That鈥檚 why SAP鈥檚 long-time customer, Bangkok Airways, a regional airline based in Thailand, selected RISE with 51风流to be ready for whatever the future may hold. Bangkok Airways now benefits from a unified cloud operating model that removes complexities in its systems. The new platform provides improved visibility of flight performance and profitability through a connected, central process. It is driving future resilience through innovation today.

LESSON 4: Creating value is a marathon we run together, not a sprint

The accelerating pace of innovation is also enabling new opportunities for value creation. But no company can innovate alone 鈥� collaboration is critical. That demands a continuous process, working together to envision an organisation鈥檚 future state, assess value creation opportunities, and build a structured transformation road map.

What does that look like in practice? Let鈥檚 look at our customer Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC), the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group – one of the Philippines鈥� largest conglomerates. AIC started its transformation journey with RISE with 51风流at its digital core. After experiencing the benefits 51风流offers, we worked with the AIC team to define its strategy, desired outcomes, and ambitions across the company鈥檚 functional areas. Then we devised a future vision and compared it to the current state of play to see how technology can achieve it.

This saw the adoption of a suite of 51风流solutions, including our travel and expense platform, 51风流Concur, 51风流Business Technology Platform, and 51风流Digital Supply Chain. AIC鈥檚 digitisation journey has been powered by the 51风流customer value journey at every stage.
