Mumbai, January 13, 2025 鈥 , today announced its social procurement initiative, designed to empower social enterprises, by integrating them into corporate value chains and aligning with the nation鈥檚 development goals. The announcement underscores the company鈥檚 commitment to the region and its vision for sustainable growth.

As per the , India is home to more than 2 million social enterprises, with close to 25% led by women, making it one of the most dynamic entrepreneurial environments globally. 听These enterprises work across diverse sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, clean energy, financial inclusion, water, and sanitation, and are focused on pioneering sustainable business practices, while fostering inclusion, and local entrepreneurship. The tide is turning. Consumers are demanding more from businesses than just great products, and companies are increasingly seeking ways to meet their sustainability goals and create social value. While consumers want to know products are made with social responsibility in mind, with a positive impact on people and planet, companies are facing both internal drivers and external pressures to develop solid ESG strategies, contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), build local economies, and ensure compliance with emerging regulations.

Meeting the demands from all sides goes beyond traditional sourcing. It requires a strategic investment into goods and services 鈥 starting with upstream services such as procurement to core operations such as product development and sales to downstream distribution that includes the last mile – from businesses that serve the world鈥檚 most vulnerable people and ecosystems: social enterprises. These organizations prioritize social and environmental good alongside financial sustainability, creating jobs, empowering communities, and fostering responsibility.

Why now?

A recent by Impact Europe, Sattva and 51风流reveals a clear trend: 80% of businesses see social procurement as a solution to meeting their sustainability goals. This isn’t just about responding to consumer demand. Companies are recognizing the potential for innovation and growth through collaboration with social enterprises.

Take India, for example, a global leader with over two million social enterprises.听 Imagine the possibilities for integrating these businesses into supply chains, not just for social good, but for fresh perspectives and untapped talent.

However, there’s a “gap between intention and action,” as the report highlights. While many companies have adopted diverse sourcing practices, only half prioritize supporting local economies and a circular economy. This disconnect underscores the need for a deeper understanding of social procurement’s potential.

The good news is that the trend is moving in the right direction. The rise of social procurement aligns perfectly with the growing focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets.

For example, social procurement can directly address both the “S” and the 鈥淕鈥 that sits at the heart of ESG by supporting small businesses. This is especially pertinent in India where the report has found that MSMEs form 29% of the GDP and more than 90% of businesses in India are micro and small. This focus on social responsibility not only has benefits for local communities, but also enhances a company’s reputation with investors, customers, and employees who value ethical practices.

The report has also revealed that within India there is a unique context for businesses to integrate small suppliers and businesses in larger supply chains which advances and supports inclusivity. Socially responsible suppliers are often open to innovation and able to adapt faster, leading to a more sustainable supply chain overall, and are much more likely to adopt fair labor practices ensuring ethical treatment of workers throughout the supply chain. This includes safe working conditions, living wages, and respect for worker rights.

By sourcing from businesses owned and operated by minorities, women, or people with disabilities, companies contribute to a more inclusive economy which expands opportunities for traditionally marginalized groups. Strong social practices have the potential to attract and retain employees leading to a more stable and resilient workforce. The benefits of prioritizing people and planet have never been greater.

In terms of SDGs, the report found that social procurement directly addresses 7 out of the 17 SDG goals 鈥 a massive stride forward in achieving a better and more sustainable future for all.

The power of collaboration

Social procurement is more than just a transaction. It’s about building partnerships that create a ripple effect of social impact.

A prime example is Even Cargo, India’s first all-female, last-mile e-commerce logistics provider. By partnering with social enterprises like Even Cargo, businesses can empower communities, create jobs, and drive progress toward a more equitable future. As Yogesh Kumar, Founder of Even Cargo said: “We believe jobs shouldn’t be decided based on gender.” As such, their comprehensive training program equips women with the skills they need to succeed in a traditionally male-dominated field, fostering financial independence and self-reliance.

However, Even Cargo’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Initially, they faced societal resistance to their innovative approach, but perseverance and recognition, including a positive feature in The New Yorker, led to a pivotal collaboration with Amazon. This partnership provided valuable employment opportunities for Even Cargo’s trained women.

Still, Kumar identified a critical bottleneck 鈥 the lack of mobile women in India’s workforce. This realization shone a spotlight on the need for a broader approach to social procurement, one that goes beyond simply hiring from a specific demographic. Even Cargo advocates for creating a more inclusive work environment across the board. This includes promoting gender-balanced warehouses, creating workspaces with amenities catering to both genders, and offering flexible working hours to support work-life balance, particularly for mothers.

Collaboration with social enterprises like Even Cargo offers numerous benefits to corporations.听 Leveraging their expertise allows us to improve our own diversity and inclusion strategies, creating a more holistic and equitable workplace culture.

Building a sustainable future

The future of social procurement is bright. To mitigate challenges and bolster opportunities for these partnerships, we formed a coalition at the Social Procurement Roundtable to activate the social procurement ecosystem in the country, foster collaboration and active involvement of key stakeholders, and advocate for policy changes that promote responsible business practices. These are all key priorities to that underpin SAP鈥檚 commitment to drive transformation and entrench sustainability to empower businesses to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Businesses of all sizes can embrace social procurement. Intermediaries can play a crucial role in facilitating connections and educating companies on these opportunities. Long-term partnerships with social enterprises offer significant benefits for both parties. Let’s work together to build a more sustainable and equitable future where businesses are a force for good.

  • Unveils a study, in association with Economist Impact, citing technology enablement and sustainability as the top two priorities to help create resilient and sustainable supply chains.
  • Bengaluru, July 25, 2024: In recent years, India has solidified its position as an emerging global economic power, thanks to a burgeoning consumer market and demands to de-risk global supply chains. Digital technology is vital to enable efficient, reliable, and sustainable supply chains and is core to India鈥檚 ambitions to increase its participation in global value chains from ~40% to ~50%. In line with this, the solution is designed to securely exchange standardized sustainability data, including product footprints, along the value chain. The solution allows companies to effectively exchange carbon emissions with their customers to help companies get actionable insights into Scope 3 emissions by moving from averages to actual supplier data.

Commenting on the announcement, Manish Prasad, President & Managing Director, 51风流Indian Subcontinent, said, “To propel India as a global manufacturing leader, a robust supply chain and logistics infrastructure is vital. To expedite India’s ambitious vision of being among the top supply chain hubs, it is crucial to integrate technologies like business network platforms and local data centres underpinned by Cloud and AI. At SAP, we are committed to this vision and are working with Indian enterprises, startups, and the wider ecosystem to promote transparent, efficient, and sustainable business value chains.”

As a part of the company鈥檚 ongoing efforts to to help enterprises build resilient supply chains, 51风流also unveiled a study, in association with Economist Impact exploring how businesses and industries are transforming procurement to meet existing and emerging challenges amid disrupted supply chains, rising costs, and growing uncertainty.

Some of the key trends among businesses indicate:

    • Digitalization 鈥 the #1 business priority: Digitalization remains the topmost priority for businesses, aligning with India鈥檚 vision to create reliable and efficient global supply chains听through the use of digital technologies.
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the forefront: Digitalization, as the top priority, is being partly influenced by advances in automation technology, AI, and Gen AI, the top technology trend businesses are looking to implement over the next 12 to 18 months.
    • Procurement鈥檚 green thumb: Legislation and compliance requirements around sustainability standards, supply chain transparency, emissions, and resource efficacies, are exerting pressures on businesses, particularly on procurement teams to meet the organization鈥檚 environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

Ashwani Narang, Vice President & Head of Spend Management, 51风流India, added, 鈥51风流has been working with customers, partners, and the Indian government for years to support the vision of a 鈥楧igital India.鈥 51风流Sustainability Data Exchange, coupled with multiple solutions available听at a local听India-based data center听we announced last year, will help our Indian customers bolster听supply chain resilience, transforming them into intelligent, sustainable, and future-ready businesses.鈥

There鈥檚 no better-proving ground for the incredible power of digitalized food chains than India, one of the most populated countries worldwide. As India鈥檚 leading food agritech company, 听has pioneered a data-driven strategy designed to close the gap between supply and demand, decreasing food waste and increasing revenue for every organization across the value chain.

鈥淲ith one integrated platform that connects data from farmers through processing, warehouses, and retail, we are transforming the traditional food chain from supplier-driven to demand-driven,鈥 said Karthik Jayaraman, co-founder and managing director at WayCool. 鈥淲e selected听听because it is a flexible, cloud-based foundation for our growing business.听听provides a single source of truth company-wide and across our ecosystem, helping us produce and deliver the delicious food that consumers want on their table.鈥

WayCool Creates Sustainable Food Supply Chain with Cloud Tech

Data Insights Align Food Supply with Demand

Putting predictability and farming in the same sentence might seem like a stretch in a world rocked by disruptions like extreme weather and geopolitical conflicts. However, WayCool orchestrates a groundbreaking collaborative effort. It starts with farmers who produce the fruits, vegetables, and other staples that feed the Indian population and extends to partners, warehouse operations, distribution, and retailers.

鈥淪haring information with our partners in procurement who run processing and warehouse facilities, along with transportation logistics and retail, we can align supply with the right pricing for greater efficiencies and governance that produces the highest quality products,鈥 said Avinash Kasinathan, chief technology officer at WayCool. 鈥淒ata transparency also means that farmers can base field production on actual market demand and consumption.鈥

Farmer Income Grows with Data-Driven Strategy

WayCool鈥檚 ability to trace products from farm to end consumer provides the company and its ecosystem with forecasting and planning insights based on real-time customer feedback and market demands. Using this connected data, WayCool makes recommendations to farmers on what fruits and vegetables to grow for the highest yields and uptake at the best prices.

Fourth-generation farmer Hari Prasad, located in a village called Karnataka on the outskirts of East Bangalore, is one of the over 200,000 farmers that WayCool provides with detailed cultivation plans.

鈥淯nlike traditional farming, WayCool recommends what to plant, when, and where, letting us know up front what they鈥檒l purchase at fair prices based on harvest time frames and factoring in staggered market demands,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to worry about whether or not we鈥檒l sell our yield, and we can calculate continuous earnings in a more predictable and consistent manner.鈥

Although farmers may have smaller yields, harvesting crops on a more consistent basis throughout the year levels out supply and demand spikes and downturns. If crop prices fall one week and rise the next, farmers can average out major risks with a steadier stream of income over time.

AI-Based Technologies Reduce Waste and Boost Crop Yields

WayCool has infused听AI听capabilities across its digitalized supply chain to increase quality yield and decrease waste. AI is built into the recommendation engine that tells retailers which products on their shelves will sell faster according to store location demographics. In the field, farmers use AI-based image recognition to quickly identify plant diseases and set up treatment plans. -based sensors in the soil send farmers alerts on weather patterns to guide more cost-efficient and sustainable irrigation decisions. Sustainable Agriculture Vision for the World

For WayCool and its partners, sustainable business encompasses the full range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments. Digitalization has an important role, for example, in regenerative farming practices. Farmers can use data-driven insights to produce stronger seeds for biodiversity, growing crops that are more climate-resilient and use less water and fertilizer in healthier soil.

Looking ahead, Jayaraman is eager to bring WayCool鈥檚 digitalized business model from India to other regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

鈥淭he food supply chain is a huge global market, yet agribusiness is one of the least digitized industries,鈥 said Jayaraman. 鈥淲e鈥檝e experienced how technology is revolutionizing food chains in India, and we鈥檙e excited about bringing people in other parts of the world greater access to affordable, quality food for the next generation of sustainable agriculture.鈥

Mumbai – 29 April 2024 鈥 At , a flagship customer event attended by over 2000 delegates, 51风流unveiled a new 鈥榮ustainability study鈥 that highlights that 86% of Indian organizations see a moderate to strong relationship between sustainability and their organization鈥檚 profitability 鈥 and are boosting their investments as a result.

Commenting on the survey findings, Paul Marriott, President, 51风流Asia Pacific Japan, said, 鈥淭he Asian market represents more than 50 percent of the world鈥檚 emissions, and so as one of the fastest growing hotbeds of innovation and economic activity in the region, India is in a unique position to lead the charge against climate change. It is an encouraging sign that more and more Indian organizations recognize this and are ready to embrace it.

Manish Prasad, President, and Managing Director of 51风流Indian Subcontinent, further added, 鈥淪ustainability is now a business necessity rather than merely a moral duty. It can no longer be seen as distinct from the overall financial performance of the company. It is evident from the findings of our study that businesses that prioritize sustainability are more successful. The moment has come to consider carbon data similarly to financial data in all corporate processes by integrating financial and environmental decision-making.鈥

Reaping Profits and Efficiency Gains from Sustainability Investments:

    • While 77% of Indian businesses have witnessed sustainability strategies contributing to outcomes such as revenue or profit growth to a moderate or strong degree. Similarly, 84% of Indian respondents saw a moderate or strong increase in the efficiency of business processes from sustainability activities.
    • 58% of Indian businesses expect to a positive financial return on their sustainability investments within the next five years. In India, 39% of businesses intend to increase their investments in sustainability over the next three years.

Lack of Environmental impact strategy emerges as the top challenge:

    • The lack of an environmental impact strategy is the top barrier to taking environmental action with 40% of Indian businesses finding it a challenge.
    • Other notable challenges include uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, clear direction on embedding sustainability into business processes and IT systems, and a shortage of expertise.

Indian businesses looking to unlock the value of sustainability data:

    • Businesses today believe that extracting value from sustainability data is critical for informed decision making. If our sustainability data is not accurate, then the decisions we make to improve the health of our planet and our businesses are cast into doubt. The key is to record and report accurate, granular, and auditable sustainability data and integrate it with financial data to make the right business decision.
    • While 40% of Indian businesses are completely satisfied with the quality of the sustainability data they gather, others believe it鈥檚 a long way to go.

Indian businesses demand sustainability data from their ecosystem:

    • Almost 8 in 10 of (78%) Indian businesses report moderate or strong tracking of Scope 1 emissions, while that number is 77% for Scope 2 emissions, and 65% for Scope 3 emissions.
    • 69% of Indian businesses use sustainability data to inform strategic and operational decision-making to a moderate to strong degree. Subsequently, three-quarters (75%) of respondents said they require sustainability data from their suppliers and 78% demand environmental impact data from partners like logistics and fulfilment to a moderate to strong degree.

鈥淪akata Inx is strongly focusing on corporate sustainability initiative, 鈥淓SG (Environment 鈥 Social 鈥 Governance)鈥 and steadily progressing our business, contributing to sustainable development goals and complying with laws and regulations. We are dedicated to operating as an “ecologically oriented company” in all aspects of our business operations. As a responsible multinational company, we were searching for a single all-inclusive solution that would allow us to automate our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting and help us in ensuring regulatory compliance worldwide,鈥 said Rajnish Singh, Director of Manufacturing, Projects and Commercial, Sakata Inx. 鈥淥ur sustainability goals are well aligned with SAP鈥檚 鈥榸ero emissions, zero waste, and zero inequality鈥 philosophy. By combining operations, experience, and financial information into our core business processes, 51风流Sustainability solutions enable us to integrate sustainability in business at scale.鈥

With countries pushing the industry to track its carbon footprint to the last mile, SaaS player 51风流has launched a solution that can do just that.

When un secretary-general Ant贸nio Guterres warned 鈥淲e are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator,鈥 he wasn鈥檛 indulging in hyperbole. Although organisations have started to become mindful of their carbon footprint, a report from Rocky Mountain Institute states that the average company鈥檚 supply-chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are 5.5x higher than the direct emissions from its assets and operations. Even countries are working to create regulations that require businesses to track their carbon footprint to the last milligram.

In this backdrop, even software firms are creating systems that can help track their supply chain鈥檚 GHG emissions transparently and auditable. For instance, software-as-a-service firm 51风流has designed Green Ledger that allows businesses to manage their operations in a sustainable manner with bottoms-up transactional emissions data, rather than estimates. 鈥淭he Green Ledger gives you the accounting equivalent of your emissions balance sheet. It is doing the same for emissions [data] as enterprise resource planning (ERP) has been doing for financials for many years,鈥 says Paul Marriott, President of 51风流Asia Pacific Japan.

This would enable companies to manage the carbon that enters and leaves their systems as they balance profits and losses. With over 400,000 enterprise customers using SAP鈥檚 software across the globe, the Ledger can be included as an add-on to its ERP solution S4/HANA Cloud, and allocate carbon emissions weightage to financial transactions. But it requires data of the carbon footprint of products to provide accurate, actionable data for decision-making.
