Businesses today are powered by Big Data mined from every available source and stored on the cloud to ensure agility, security and strategic decision making. Indeed, Big Data and Cloud Computing are a potent combination that has changed how businesses operate. Yet, the relationship between data and computing is often misunderstood.

What is Big Data?

Big Data is a term that refers to large volumes of hard-to-manage data that inundate businesses on a day-to-day basis. It also refers to the field that deals with ways to analyze and systematically extract information or just deal with data sets that are too large or complex to be dealt with by traditional data-processing software.

The challenges to big data analysis include data capture, data storage, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, querying, updating, privacy, and data source. The complexity of big data makes it impossible to process using traditional methods. The concept of big data gained momentum in the early 2000s when Dough Laney defined big data as the three V鈥檚- Volume, Velocity, and Variety.

Volume

Organizations collect data from a variety of sources and storing all of those data would have been too costly if not for new and cheaper alternatives like data lakes, Hadoop and the cloud.

Velocity

Internet of things warrants timely processing of data streams traveling at unprecedented speeds. These torrents of data need to be dealt with at near-real-time speeds.

Variety

Data can be of many types 鈥 structured numeric data in traditional databases to unstructured text documents, videos, audios, financial transactions etc.

Big Data in the present context

Big Data is synonymous with predictive analytics, user behavior analytics, or other advanced data analytics methods that extract value from big data. We rarely refer to a particular size of data set when big data is mentioned. The relevant characteristic of this new data ecosystem is to find new correlations to spot business trends, prevent diseases, combat crime and more.

The advent of widespread technology, including mobile phones, has tremendously increased the size and number of available data sets. Internet of Things (IoT) devices, aerial sensing, software logs, cameras, microphones, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and wireless sensor networks are just a few of the many cheap and numerous information sensing devices that add to the data pile.

Applicationsof Big Data

The increasing use of data-intensive technologies by developed economies has spurred the demand for information management specialists and data analysts across the globe. Between 1 billion and 2 billion people are accessing the internet and there are 4.6 billion mobile-phone subscriptions worldwide.

  • Government Use of Big Data

Big data use in government processes allows efficiencies in cost, productivity and innovation. But it does have its flaws; for instance, the听听to search for patterns that have the potential to lead to illegal activities. Privacy is an aspect that is still being debated in the context of big data.

  • International Development

Big data offers cost-effective opportunities to improve decision-making in critical development areas such as health care, employment, economic productivity, crime, security, natural disasters and resource management. User-generated data is also an avenue for the unheard to be heard. However, technological infrastructure and economic and human resource scarcities remain challenges to developing regions. These scarcities can potentially exacerbate existing big data concerns like privacy, imperfect methodology, and interoperability.

Big data has been significant in the fight against poverty by providing satellite imagery and machine learning for poverty prediction. For instance, the labor market and the digital economy were studied using digital trace data in Latin America.

  • Healthcare

Big data analytics plays a significant role in healthcare through:

  • Personalized medicine
  • Prescriptive analytics
  • Clinical risk intervention
  • Predictive analytics
  • Waste and care variability reduction
  • Automated external and internal reporting of patient data
  • Standardized medical terms and patient registries

Human inspection is impossible at the volumes of big data scales, and intelligent tools for accuracy, believability control and handling of information are required. These are conducted with the help of specific analytic tools. Data-driven analysis has helped in exploratory biomedical research as it can move forward faster than hypothesis-driven research. Computer-aided diagnostics is another aspect of healthcare that depends heavily on big data.

  • Media

By providing actionable insights into millions of individuals through big data, a message or content that aligns with the consumer’s mindset can be conveyed. Consumers are tapped into with the help of targeted content that reaches people at optimal times in optimal locations. The current advertising ecosystem is a good example of this.

  • Internet of Things (IoT)

The media industry, companies, and governments use the data extracted from IoT devices to accurately target their audience and increase media efficiency. The sensory data gathered from the devices are used in medical, manufacturing and transportation contexts. Ideally, the data from devices would help track and count everything and tremendously reduce waste, loss and cost.

  • Information Technology

Big data has helped business operations as a tool to streamline the collection and distribution of Information Technology and improve employee efficiency. Deep computing and machine intelligence help IT departments predict and prevent issues.

  • Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

Big data is a crucial component used in the training of complex models and facilitating Artificial Intelligence.

Big Data Needs of Businesses

What is Cloud Computing?

It is the on-demand availability of computer system resources like data storage and computing power without direct active management by the user. Large clouds often have their functions distributed over multiple locations, with each location acting as a data center. Reliance on sharing resources to achieve coherence is a characteristic feature of cloud computing.

Cloud storage makes it possible to save files on a remote database instead of a proprietary hard drive or local storage device.

Types of Cloud Computing Services

Cloud computing services provide users with a series of functions including:

  • Email
  • Storage, backup, and data retrieval
  • Creation and testing of apps
  • Data analysis
  • Video and Audio Streaming
  • Software on demand

Benefits of Cloud Computing

  1. Increased productivity, reduced costs, speed, efficiency, performance, security, and portability are just a few of the reasons why Cloud Computing has seen an increase in popularity lately. The heavy lifting involved in processing data is done by the remote system instead of the device that a person carries to work.
  2. Being a fairly new service, cloud computing is used widely in the business space by big corporations, small businesses, non-profits, government agencies and even individual consumers.
  3. Before cloud computing, businesses were required to purchase, construct and maintain costly information management infrastructure. Now companies can swap costly server centers and IT departments with fast internet connections over which employees can interact with the cloud to complete their tasks. This has resulted in tremendous cost and time savings.
  4. Reliance on tangible software upgrade methods like discs and flash drives is replaced by faster methods of internet upgrades. It also helps individuals save storage space on their desktops or laptops through customer data cloud services.

Cloud Computing Concerns

  1. Security has always been a natural concern when it comes to sensitive medical records and financial information. Encryption protects vital information, but the loss of the encryption key would result in data loss. The issue of security in cloud computing is an ongoing issue, with regulations forcing service providers to shore up their security and compliance measures.
  2. Then there is the issue of server damage. For instance, a server company can fall victim to natural disasters, internal bugs, power outages and more. A blackout in one part of the world could affect the users accessing that data from another country.

Big Data on The Cloud

Big data before the cloud strained the financial and intellectual capital of even the largest businesses by the sheer amount of computing resources and software services needed to support the effort. With the advent of cloud computing technology that provides almost limitless computing resources and services, big data initiatives are now possible for any business, big or small.

Enterprise Case Studies for Big Data on the Cloud

  • Netflix on AWS

Being one of the largest media and technology enterprises in the world, Netflix stores billions of data sets in its systems concerning audio-visual data, consumer metrics and recommendation engines. AWS gave the company a solution that would allow it to store, manage, and optimize viewers鈥 data and offered a platform that would enable quicker and more efficient collaboration on projects. It enabled Netflix to discover and respond to issues in real-time, ensuring high availability and a great customer experience.

  • 2. mLogica on 51风流HANA Cloud

mLogica, a technology and product consulting firm, wanted to move to the cloud to better support its customer’s big data storage and analytics needs. 51风流HANA Cloud enabled the move from on-premises infrastructure to a more scalable cloud structure. It helped them to manage growing pools of data from multiple client accounts, improve slow upload speeds for customers, move to the cloud to avoid maintenance of on-premises infrastructure and integrate the company鈥檚 existing big data analytics platform into the cloud.

Advantages of Big Data in the cloud

  • Scalability

The physical constraints of a typical business data center significantly throttle its ability to conduct business. A public cloud negates the space, power, cooling and budget requirements of a big data infrastructure by managing hundreds of thousands of servers spread across a fleet of global data centers. It also translates to savings in time as the cloud infrastructure is already built and ready to go.

  • Flexibility

Businesses can choose to employ the required number of servers according to the budget and task at hand, and then later release them when the task is complete.

  • Cost

Hardware, facilities, power and maintenance are just a few of the expenses for building and maintaining a business data center. The prohibitive cost and wastage are removed through a flexible rental model where resources and services are available on-demand and follow a pay-per-use model.

  • Accessibility

The significant global footprint of cloud services enables resources and services to be deployed in most global regions. The data and processing activity can take place proximally to the area where the big data task is located instead of moving that data to another region.

  • Resilience

Replication of cloud data across its servers is standard practice by service providers to ensure high availability in storage resources and maintain cloud data resilience.

Cons of Big Data in Cloud Computing and Ways to Overcome them

Even though the value of big data in cloud computing is tremendous, it鈥檚 not without its pitfalls. Businesses need to consider potential drawbacks before adopting a public cloud or a third-party big data service.

  • Network Dependence

The effect of outages is a significant concern in any big data use of the cloud. Cloud use requires complete network connectivity from the LAN, through the internet, to the cloud provider鈥檚 network. An outage at any point in this chain could result in increased latency at the best of times and complete cloud inaccessibility at worst. Data replication and usage of reliable networks and cloud services can reduce this risk considerably.

  • Storage Cost

Data storage can be a substantial long-term cost for big data projects on the cloud. The loading of data into the cloud is time-consuming and the storage instances incur a regular fee. Data migration, which refers to the transfer of data between servers, may incur additional fees and loss of time. Hence, comprehensive data retention and deletion policies must be employed by businesses to prevent retaining unnecessary data and deal with time-sensitive big data sets.

  • Security

The data involved in big data projects can contain proprietary or personally identifiable data that is subject to data protection laws and other industry or government-driven regulations. Security of such data is paramount. Cloud users must take the steps needed to maintain security in cloud storage and computing through adequate authentication and authorization, encryption and copious logging of access and usage of data.

  • Lack of Standardization

As there is no single way to implement and operate a big data deployment in the cloud, there is a potential for poor performance and exposure to security risks. Documentation of big data architecture, along with policies and procedures of use, should be prioritized by business users to sidestep potential problems. This documentation can become a foundation for future optimizations and improvements.

Choosing the right customer data cloud provider

Even though the underlying hardware gets the spotlight, it鈥檚 the analytical tools that make big data analytics possible. Providers such as听听can arrange for support and consulting to help businesses optimize their big data projects so that they won’t need to start their initiatives from scratch.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and various others have gained a significant influence due to digitalization. Businesses see these platforms as a chance to expand and enhance brand exposure in the digital era. Now, an online user is most likely to come across content created by various organizations to promote their brands, launch new products etc. As per听, the importance of online presence has increased post the pandemic, and only about 20% of B2B customers are expected to return to in-person sales.

听is a superb example of a traditional company that uses social media to increase its brand image. Rolex stands for class, and appeals to the customers by emphasizing its unique, timeless products. The luxury appeal of its high-value products is enhanced with the help of sleek and minimalist visuals in its photography, videos, and other visual work. Such high-quality product photographs enable the brand to have a higher recall value and stand apart from competitors.

  • Reduction in human errors

Business operations have become more streamlined because of digitalization, resulting in lower operating costs. Automation has taken away repetitive and mundane tasks from human employees, lowering the chances of errors. For example, people-powered data entries take a long time to be vetted, verified and cleaned up before they can be used for any purpose. Data that is incomplete or incorrect can stymie product launches and bias strategic analysis. All these hurdles can be done away with through digitalization.

  • Real-time data gathering and analysis is possible

Over the past few decades, organizations have relied on data collected from various sources, manual data cleansing and standardization. This traditional analytical model is labor-intensive, costly, time-consuming, and depends too much on the skills of data analysts.

Digital media marketers can now capture data, store it, analyze it and communicate results, all in a matter of minutes. This provides businesses with valuable customer knowledge in one place. Marketers can also look at campaigns to see what’s working and what’s not, so businesses can quickly adapt to the current trends to improve their results.

  • Introduction of new communication channels

The use of digital technology has resulted in the introduction of new communication channels as well as a rise in a company’s digital presence. Emails, smartphone apps, and social media are just a few examples of the current communication methods. Forward-looking companies are aiming at creating a seamlessapproach for their customers. Here, their experience of interacting with the company using numerous digital communication channels is smooth and enjoyable.

  • Pooling of knowledge sources and skills

We now have access to limitless experiences and data, thanks to digitalization. Every business can utilize information that exists outside conventional bounds. Similarly, companies that understand how to bring collaborative groups together can grow and generate surplus economic value. Digitization allows diverse individuals to collaborate, bridging the gap between IT and non-IT departments and changing the way firms generate value.

  • Transaction costs are lower

Documentation, reconciliation, mail generation, calling, data entry, overtime, and supervision are those areas where digitalization facilitates the reduction in costs. Online businesses see easier operation management, which leads to lowered transaction costs.

  • Expansion in Revenue

The primary goal of any business is income generation; higher the revenue, greater the growth. A colossal effect impact on revenue generation is observed in organizations that have introduced digital changes. Using innovative digital solutions in your organization provides you a competitive advantage, and a well-thought-out digitalization strategy may help you rethink procedures, enhance quality, and promote consistency.听

In conclusion

Thus, digitalization is more an opportunity than a challenge for all companies, regardless of their industry, location, or market. ]]>
There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global value chains adversely. According to a听听,听nearly 94% of the Fortune 1000 companies experienced supply chain disruptions. Whether it was restriction on movement of goods or consignments stuck at ports due to regional lockdowns or fluctuating consumer demand, the vulnerabilities accompanying global value chains were exposed.

Supply chain

The global health crisis also highlighted the weaknesses of traditional workflows in management and logistics: Manual, paper-based processes; siloed working and undefined roles; disparate and unstructured data; low or zero visibility of the end-to-end supply chain and logistics; lack of real-time monitoring, etc.

In the eye of the storm

The disruption also forced companies to relook their supply chain function end-to-end and figure out long-term measures to build resilience and agility. For instance, customers will continue to demand more in less time even after the pandemic is gone. But for companies to cope with this customer expectation, a drastic rethink of their supply chain management and logistics (SCML) is a must.

Here鈥檚 where technology plays a pivotal role, not only to provide intelligence and insights but also to enable new operational models. And Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), Big Data analytics, and blockchain are some of the technologies that are rapidly redefining how SCML systems work.

How Supply Chain Heads are using AI and IoT

A well-managed supply chain is a crucial factor to gain advantage over the competition, especially in the present era where supply chains are intricate, spread worldwide, and decentralized. So, if AI earlier was only helping to address skills shortage and maintain inventories, the flexibility and adaptability of this technology is now allowing supply chain heads to be more innovative. From improving production planning to making more accurate forecasts, AI is allowing companies to minimize or eliminate errors completely.

AI, coupled with IoT, would allow supply chain heads to monitor and manage storage, transportation, supply chains, and warehouses efficiently and in real-time, without having to be physically present. These technologies also allow for planning and monitoring movement of goods so that unforeseen events (read pandemic, adverse weather conditions) can be managed well in advance.

Other immediate benefits of adopting digitalization and new technologies include:

  • Smart scheduling and planning,
  • Parameter optimization,
  • Intelligent and proactive quality analysis,
  • Proactive maintenance,
  • Efficient analysis of maintenance and production costs along with precise estimation and control,
  • Intelligent control of energy consumption and associated costs, and
  • Real-time monitoring of production process and procedures.

What鈥檚 Next in SCML

As mentioned earlier,听traditional SCML systems have now proven to be struggling with ever-changing customer demand, rapidly evolving operations planning, and the constantly changing state of business processes.

In 2022, these technologies aim to overcome all these challenges more effectively through a range of activities including providing sales, production and consumption forecasting, supplier selection, and demand management using Artificial Neural Networks. These technologies would help businesses become proactive with capabilities like agent-based systems, which perceive the surrounding environment and can act autonomously and proactively solve certain problems.

Next year, AI and IoT are also expected to help businesses through improved supply chain efficiency implemented by using better managerial decision-making processes, including multi-objective optimization of supply chain networks, partner selection in green supply chain problems, multi-product supply chain networks, and a problem-solving approach to closed-loop supply chains.

Augmented Intelligence along with AI is expected to spike in use as it would help reduce manual effort, helping companies optimize costs while increasing worker productivity. According to听, it can create $2.9 trillion worth of business value and lead to an increase of 6.2 billion hours of worker productivity globally. By 2030, AI/Augmented intelligence is expected to surpass all other forms of AI initiatives. Essentially, this means professionals can do their work faster, reducing errors and saving costs.

Supply chain

IoT sensor technology will continue to play important roles and expand on its use cases. This technology helps track shipments. Connected IoT devices on consignments allow warehouses to track inventory, vehicles, and equipment through cloud services. Collaboration between IoT start-ups and container shipping companies are expected to increase next year given the inherent benefits, including real-time monitoring and predictive capabilities.

The need for real-time data will only increase. From gauging customer sentiments and trends to ensuring timely deliveries, data will play a critical role in deriving intelligent insights that drive strategic decisions.听Machine learning-enabled risk assessment tools, for instance, can find patterns in geopolitical tensions, macroeconomic shifts, exchange rates, and other data.

Supply Chain

According to听, IoT is important because emerging supply chain techniques need the freshest, most accurate data. And being able to predict consumer shifts, more than demand, will become increasingly important post-pandemic.

The Experience Economy and Changing Paradigm

The consumer, today, no longer stops expecting once a good is purchased. The demand continues long after 鈥 the customer experience has become critical and sustaining a good customer experience has become central to this theme. But for businesses grappling with supply chain disruptions, how can sustaining good customer experience be a real possibility?

Digitalization of supply chain management and logistics allows this: where processes and systems that support mass personalization can be deployed; where collaboration with non-traditional ecosystem partners makes it possible to deliver higher value, and where efficient order fulfillment and delivery become par for the course.

Moving Ahead with SAP

As businesses move faster into a changed economy, technology leaders face a critical mandate and opportunity; adapt and innovate.

Connected solutions have proven their worth in today’s crisis. In the 2020 Metal and Mining Industry Summit hosted by ASSOCHAM and SAP, the business leaders came together and shared insights on the comeback roadmap in the post-pandemic world. One of the key sessions in the summit was by Mr. Vikash Srivastava, Head IT, Business Intelligence & Data Visualization, , sharing his perspective on how a connected workforce ensured worker safety and improved productivity amidst the COVID-19 crisis.

Previously, organizations had thin, umbrella-like policies that could sustain small impacts but failed to transform into a solution in a crisis like now. Today, technologies must provide the much-needed support for factory and front-line workers to collaborate effectively, as physical distancing becomes the new normal. Digital tools are primed to play a significant role, enabling a connected ecosystem with high safety and productivity management standards at the center.

Find how the manufacturing industry is mastering ‘shorter time to value’, focusing on insights and total workforce management integration. Embedding digital collaboration in workspaces Manufacturing industries are in for a big change with their workforce’s safety and security of paramount importance. They face a few challenges broadly:

  • Create zones so that no employee goes to a zone where he is not permitted
  • Employees can be located immediately in case of any distress
  • Contact tracing to protect staff in-case of infection and control the spread

, the 113 year old leading steel manufacturer, took a big step in this direction with its tech-based initiative for safe working inside their manufacturing plants and mines in the COVID situation today. With a high workforce footfall (approx. 30-35 K), huge amounts of data get captured every single second across plants and mining sites. To make sense of this digital data trail, they used that confirmed maximum gain from multiple data points, increased productivity, and operational efficiency in real-time, along with ensuring the safety of their workforce. The database was further integrated with an IoT based tracking system called ‘Suraksha Card,’ that can monitor all its employee movements in real-time. The technology enabled a crowd sensing solution that detects and alerts a violation of social distancing at floors. A COVID risk profile assessment is done with scientific contact tracing and social-distancing checks enabled through AI.

The data is captured in real-time, transforming into solutions and quick actions – STRONG RESPONSE PROTOCOLS. The HANA platform is integrated with different applications in TATA Steel, including the 51风流HANA modules, employee attendance, and biometric systems. A real-time data analysis of every single employee gets captured, which ensures the complete safety and security of each person. If an employee’s profile doesn’t fit the profile required for that area, or he is a COVID positive patient or even been in close proximity of a +ve patient, then the turnstile will not open. With multiple checks and balances in place, it supported in controlling the spread of the disease and improving the productivity of every employee.

What is SAP鈥檚 Business Technology Platform?

Why is it an important part of the company鈥檚 intelligent enterprise strategy? Irfan Khan, president of Platform and Technologies at SAP, explains in simple terms. 鈥淭he Business Technology Platform is the underpinnings of the Intelligent Enterprise,鈥 Khan explained in a recent interview.

鈥淚n order to become intelligent enterprises, customers need a fundamental business layer. That is what the Business Technology Platform is.鈥

Khan describes the as comprising a collection of different assets. First and foremost, he says, is a substantial database component, which has at the center of it but it also includes embedded analytics along with the ability to incorporate horizontal business analytics.

Other components include robotic process automation (RPA), machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI).

鈥淭he final piece is a very substantial integration capability delivered through 51风流Cloud Platform, which is another very fundamental cornerstone of Business Technology Platform as well,鈥 he shared.

Business Technology Platform is the horizontal technology foundation for SAP鈥檚 intelligence suite of applications, the basis for the industry cloud, and the platform for delivering the best customer experiences. According to Khan, it will enable customers to be able to realize even more value from their investments in 51风流technology from their core business and contextual data.

In addition, Khan argues that the Business Technology Platform opens the 51风流environment up to community developers and citizen developers.

鈥淭hey can all now interact and take the value of SAP鈥檚 core business processes,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n actual fact, we鈥檙e not only providing process excellence, we are providing data excellence as well now. That gives much more of a fluid way of looking at all the content, all of the data, all the information that may be available within inside of the enterprise and outside. So we could think of it as unlocking the hidden value in data which already exists.鈥

As a result, Khan believes both customers and partners will be able to further 鈥渁mplify the value鈥 inherent in the very substantial 51风流footprint across industries and geographies.

One of the key lessons Khan says 51风流has learned over the years is that applications must be able to run in a variety of different environments. Today, for example, 51风流software and services must be able to run across different hyperscaler and infrastructure environments.

The second ingredient for success is to focus on making 51风流technology 鈥渙pen to all developers out there,鈥 Khan explained.

Thirdly, he said, 鈥渆very partner and every direct customer wants to have a robust, almost bulletproof environment to be able to build their innovations.鈥

He says this is exactly what the Business Technology Platform delivers. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an ever-expanding set of services that we鈥檙e adding and over time it will fulfill not just their current needs, but their future needs as well.鈥

Khan described the Business Technology Platform as 鈥渁 living, evolving platform,鈥 that will enable customers to access not just 51风流data, but all sets of data, including externally generated Big Data, in a trusted manner.

鈥淥ur message is very simple,鈥 Khan said. 鈥淲e will actually want to make it very open, make your data work for you, independent of where it lives and where it sits today 鈥 at the edge or in a traditional data center.鈥

For that reason alone, he says, 51风流will have a far stronger message than competitors to deliver to the market.
