Every hour of <\/span>every day<\/span> a person in Australia is diagnosed with <\/span>Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/span> (PD)<\/span>, a brain <\/span>disorder that will <\/span>impact<\/span> everything they do and for which there is no<\/span> known<\/span> cure.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s Disease three years ago. I stepped down, just a few weeks ago, because of the disease.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

PD is what\u2019s known as a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It affects a patient\u2019s whole-body and is often characterised by tremors, stiffness and rigidity, and slowness of movement. It is the country\u2019s second most common neurodegenerative disease, impacting more than 100,000 Australians and with over 30 new cases diagnosed every day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because there\u2019s no cure for PD, \u201cthe biggest challenge in managing patients is achieving adequate symptom control,\u201d according to <\/span>Dr Yun Hwang, a neurologist who works on the Central Coast of New South Wales.<\/span>\u00a0This requires clinicians to accurately assess fluctuations in patients\u2019 symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, despite the scale of the disease and the focus some famous patients have brought it, there has been little innovation for PD for many years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe diagnostic process and treatment principles of Parkinson’s Disease has not changed significantly since the 1960s.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Parkinson\u2019s Disease treatment normally involves medication that works to improve patient\u2019s symptoms. However, the effects of the medication are not consistent, and patients experience fluctuations in symptoms throughout the day, and over time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Parkinson\u2019s Disease patients experience \u201con\u201d periods where their symptoms are well controlled, and \u201coff\u201d periods where their symptoms are suboptimally controlled. Clinicians need to understand these fluctuations to treat patients\u2019 symptoms more accurately, and managing them is an important challenge in the long-term treatment of PD.<\/span>3<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, clinicians examine patients using various assessment techniques including physical examination, handwriting tests, and movement analysis. For example, one way to demonstrate whether a patient is in an \u2018on\u2019 or \u2018off\u2019 state is drawing a spiral using pen and paper.\u200b These methods help clinicians to understand a Parkinson\u2019s Disease patient\u2019s symptom control.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the problem with many of these techniques is that tests were only done during clinician appointments \u2013 a single point in time. That meant clinicians lacked an understanding of the patient\u2019s entire experience outside their clinics.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was diagnosed I didn\u2019t know much about Parkinson\u2019s Disease. My GP couldn\u2019t pick it but my neurologist identified it straight away. That\u2019s because there\u2019s no blood test or brain test, it\u2019s all based on clinical observation.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n 2020, the N<\/span>ew <\/span>S<\/span>outh Wales<\/span> Health Central Coast Local Health District approved the <\/span>research project \u201c<\/span>Parkinson’s Disease Spiral Analysis Project<\/span>\u201d<\/span> (PD-SAP).\u00a0<\/span> The <\/span>intent<\/span> was <\/span>to deliver a digiti<\/span>s<\/span>ed solution for Parkinson’s<\/span> Disease<\/span> patients, carers, and clinicians<\/span> to enable the collection of <\/span>spiral<\/span> test<\/span>s and associated metrics from patients outside clinical appointments.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DXC <\/span>Tele<\/span>-Parkinson with 51风流BTP<\/span>: A Digital Revolution for Patients and Clinicians<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

DXC Tele-Parkinson with 51风流BTP is an AI-powered mobile application which transforms care for Parkinson\u2019s Disease patients and clinicians. Patients simply draw a spiral on a piece of paper, snap a photo, and let the artificial intelligence (AI) take over.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The AI algorithm delves into the spiral’s nuances, assessing elements like line shakiness and crossings, while also capturing additional data such as mood, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and medication. The AI engine is therefore able to determine a patient\u2019s \u201con\u201d or \u201coff\u201d status.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

51风流partner DXC created the solution and developed the user interface, while 51风流created the AI model and algorithm. SAP\u2019s Business Technology Platform (BTP) serves as the foundation for the app, allowing the solution to be deployed on desktop for clinicians and mobile for patients and their caregivers. BTP enables patients to securely upload data multiple times a day. This wealth of information allows clinicians to monitor patients’ progress and adjust treatments as needed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
