If you couldn\u2019t tune into the 51风流2020 Adaptive Strategies in a Changed World Virtual Industry, the\u00a0<\/span>recordings<\/span>\u00a0are\u00a0<\/span>available on demand here<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>However, I\u2019d like to take this opportunity to explore some of the ideas and themes that were discussed during the\u00a0<\/span>event and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>provide a perspective\u00a0<\/span>on how these learnings might help us\u00a0<\/span>emerge from this crisis in better shape than we went into it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Public Services virtual forum began with introductory remarks from President and Managing Director of 51风流ANZ, Damien Bueno, who noted the impressive pace and ways businesses are adapting. He expressed how 51风流has been working from home for nearly two months and while this is a time of uncertainty for many, businesses and governments alike should have licence to be bold and use this opportunity to evolve digitally in order to remain stronger.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Damien also expressed the importance of optimism\u00a0<\/span>during\u00a0<\/span>a time like this \u2013\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the importance of understanding\u00a0<\/span>what could become<\/span>\u00a0new ways of working<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Adapting under crisis is giving\u00a0<\/span>business<\/span>es new skills and perspectives and<\/span>\u00a0the chance to emerge more prepared and resilient to future shock events.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Test of Fire and Pandemic<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Next<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>I was fortunate to facilitate<\/span>\u00a0a discussion<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>Lee Miezis,\u00a0<\/span>CEO of<\/span>\u00a0Bushfire Recovery Victoria<\/span>, and Simon Bush,\u00a0<\/span>GM Policy and Advocacy at AIIA and Managing Director<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Bush-Consulting<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Simon\u00a0<\/span>was encouraged by the speed of adaptation, noting how rapid digitalisation is occurring across the legal sector, healthcare, government, and more, at a pace that\u2019s taking weeks instead of years. As part of businesses moving boldly, there ha<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0been positive\u00a0<\/span>feedback\u00a0<\/span>as businesses have been able to respond to changing circumstances at scale, adapting to added strains on resources and services.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lee\u00a0<\/span>gave the audience a run through his first 100 days on the job, from the development of Bushfire Recovery Victoria in response to Australia\u2019s severe bushfire season 2019-2020.<\/span>\u00a0He noted how the past six months have been\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>continual\u00a0<\/span>adaptation\u00a0<\/span>to drastic changes, which has required significant co-ordination between government<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>jurisdictions<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>businesses<\/span>, and communities in order to keep people informed and safe during the bushfire season and subsequent COVID-19 crisis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A key challenge Lee mentioned was offering targeted support those who\u2019ve undergone tragedy and displacement. The damage cause by bushfires was widespread and the ability to serve those impacted required\u00a0<\/span>aggregating a lot of data from organisations \u2013 both public and private \u2013 to gather insights into people\u2019s situations, the support they require, and their eligibility for specific schemes and services.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His<\/span>\u00a0organisation was forced to work quickly,\u00a0<\/span>leverag<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the available\u00a0<\/span>technology and data to\u00a0<\/span>provide that targeted<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>support.<\/span>\u00a0Lee noted the\u00a0<\/span>vital\u00a0<\/span>importance of being able to gather disparate data and verify it,\u00a0<\/span>in order to co-ordinate the right response at the right time<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He emphasised that\u00a0<\/span>data is critical to providing the right services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lee commented on the importance of existing relationships<\/span>, enabling them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to connect\u00a0<\/span>rapidly\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>other\u00a0<\/span>government agencies and\u00a0<\/span>business\u2019s with relevant capabilities. He noted that they were overwhelmed with offers of support in<\/span>\u00a0the initial stages and the existing relationships were the quickest way to leverage the support needed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of building staff resilience<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Le<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0observ<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0the need to nurture staff relationships<\/span>\u00a0and engagement<\/span>\u00a0especially in a\u00a0<\/span>brand-new<\/span>\u00a0organisation<\/span>al structure who were suddenly working\u00a0<\/span>remotely<\/span>. This\u00a0<\/span>entailed\u00a0<\/span>focusing on\u00a0<\/span>regular, frequent communications<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>he gave an example of mailing\u00a0<\/span>care packages<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The adage \u2018n<\/span>ever waste a crisis<\/span>\u2019 was expressed\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>both Simon and Lee<\/span>\u00a0not<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>how this challenging period could still offer people and organisations a learning opportunity to better connect with one another, discover best practices for\u00a0<\/span>adaptation<\/span>, and find a way to deepen trust amongst customers, partners, employees, and other stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Value of Communication and Support<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Connection was a key theme of the discussion as the need to keep staff connected to the organisation\u2019s purpose, expectations, and customers are all critical \u2013 whether during or outside a crisis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When facilitating work-from-home staff, there were three key take-aways. First was the need to balance collaboration with productivity \u2013 ensuring staff have the technology and support they need to stay connected with the organisation, collaborate with colleagues, and stay safe during this period of change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second point regarding work-from-home is the value of company culture \u2013 not only in terms of camaraderie, but in making allowances for adjustment, understanding the disruptions that are occurring, and normalising those practices that will benefit the organisation beyond COVID-19.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third was the importance of\u00a0<\/span>mental health<\/span>. It can be challenging for many to log<\/span>\u00a0off<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>disengage\u00a0<\/span>from work when they\u2019re homelives and work now share a roof. The ability to\u00a0<\/span>reengage socially, get outside and exercise<\/span>, or simply step away from the computer is paramount\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>first priority<\/span>\u00a0throughout this crisis\u00a0<\/span>has been<\/span>\u00a0the health and wellbeing of everyone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>significant<\/span>\u00a0takeaway for me in facilitating this\u00a0<\/span>discussion\u00a0<\/span>was the\u00a0<\/span>vital\u00a0<\/span>importance\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0connections<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>combined with insightful\u00a0<\/span>data<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>play<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>helping\u00a0<\/span>organisations to\u00a0<\/span>rapidly\u00a0<\/span>adapt\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>then\u00a0<\/span>respond\u00a0<\/span>to changes in their environment<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It certainly suggests that\u00a0<\/span>effort spen<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0building\u00a0<\/span>more\u00a0<\/span>robust\u00a0<\/span>engagement\u00a0<\/span>structures\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>staff, customers<\/span>, other agencies<\/span>\u00a0and relevant\u00a0<\/span>businesses<\/span>\u00a0creates a\u00a0<\/span>stronger\u00a0<\/span>adaptive<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>capability<\/span>. Combin<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>wi<\/span>th better data insights\u00a0<\/span>derived from<\/span>\u00a0a more comprehensive\u00a0<\/span>treatment of<\/span>, <\/span>and focus on<\/span>, <\/span>data\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>a valuable asset<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>allows\u00a0<\/span>rapid\u00a0<\/span>and more targeted responses<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in times of change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>oth<\/span>\u00a0the p<\/span>ublic and private sector should\u00a0<\/span>consider\u00a0<\/span>us<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0this\u00a0<\/span>crisis to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>improve communications<\/span>\u00a0with each other<\/span>, better express needs and\u00a0<\/span>expectations, an<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0enable<\/span>\u00a0these improved connections through data \u2013 using data insights to understand our situation, our responses, and\u00a0<\/span>how we emerge from this crisis in better shape than we went into it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
