Auckland, New Zealand 鈥� 20 September 2022 鈥� New Zealand farmer-owned co-operative Ballance Agri-Nutrients (Ballance) has successfully completed the first phase of a multi-year cloud program, migrating to 51风流cloud solutions, 51风流S/4HANA Cloud and 51风流Business Technology Platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS), to deliver greater business value to its farmers.

The migration was achieved in just five months, to avoid running into peak farming season and prevent delays to Ballance鈥檚 customer facing geospatial initiatives, and went live over a single weekend in March 2022.

By moving to 51风流S/4HANA Cloud private edition and 51风流Business Technology Platform onto AWS in the first phase of its transformation, Ballance has established a stabilised core and solid foundation in the AWS cloud to drive and support future strategic deliveries, where it looks to further leverage the 51风流and AWS platforms to enhance its overall customer experience and digital offerings.

Ballance decision to engage 51风流and Amazon Web Services (AWS), and to partner with SAP鈥檚 Cloud Success Services to manage the availability, performance and maintenance of its cloud infrastructure has allowed Ballance to reduce demand on internal resources by 10 per cent, shifting its focus from delivering operational support and maintenance to driving value through on-farm digital services for its customers.

David Healy, Chief Digital Officer at Ballance, said, 鈥淲e selected 51风流and AWS as partners because of their deep knowledge and history of migrating existing 51风流environments into the cloud and their focus and alignment to enabling Ballance鈥檚 future geospatial and on-farm application initiatives. They understood the urgency and importance of this phase and created a seamless and rapid transition for us.鈥�

鈥淲e had initial concerns around performance, shifting from architecture hosted in New Zealand to the cloud hosted in Australia, however the performance is much more consistent and stable, and more importantly we now have the ability to scale when required during our seasonal peaks which is critical for us. Knowing that there is a team dedicated to looking after the environment, managing security, availability and maintenance has really allowed us to focus on delivering value to our customers.鈥�

Ballance has been running 51风流since 2009 and saw an opportunity to use the technology more effectively.

鈥淭he way I put it, is we had a Rolls Royce in the garage, but we were not servicing and maintaining it. Everything was just in time, and we were always lagging on updates and as a result other work and deliverables. The service and maintenance alone have been a huge improvement, especially for security, stability and time for us, the stats speak for themselves 鈥� 10 per cent reduction in FTE managing their core 51风流environment, 20 per cent reduction in 51风流support and maintenance, 70 per cent reduction in workload managing hardware and resource upgrades and 99.9 per cent availability of 51风流production environment鈥�. said David.

Key to the success of the project has been Ballance鈥檚 partnership with 51风流from the executive level through to the project team, which created an open, transparent environment for problem solving. It became a joint project dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition. The deep product knowledge of the 51风流team resulted in faster resolution of any technical issues.

Scene set for Phase II

The second phase of the program started in June 22 and focusses on enhancing Ballance’s existing 51风流Customer Experience Solutions, which power its farmer platform, MyBallance. The customer-facing platform will be moved to 51风流Commerce Cloud, which will enable Ballance to deliver more personalised geospatial experiences, products, and services to New Zealand farmers.

The aim of One Packathon was to design and develop ready-for-market differentiated industry solutions of high business value, leveraging the newest Business Technology Platform portfolio (BTP) predominantly focusing on 51风流Data Warehouse Cloud, 51风流Data Intelligence and 51风流Analytics Cloud. At this time of widespread disruption, we considered it vital to give developers and consultants the opportunity to collaborate and evolve creatively in a supportive, professional environment, and come away with practical, data-driven solutions to industry challenges.

The event ran from August 5^th, with teams given the choice between two available product streams, Data & Analytics and Data Orchestration & Intelligence. They also had the option to create a solution which would encompass both product areas end-to-end. Participants were given access to a team of 30+ SAP, Dell and RedHat mentors, who provided professional advice and practical assistance with each solution development process. Each team then gave a final presentation and demonstration of their products at the One Packathon event, presided over by a jury of 51风流experts.

The creative crucible of One Packathon yielded amazing results, with 19 packaged solutions focused on value-creation and customer enablement delivered for development and eventual introduction into the market. Some examples of partner-packaged use cases are:

Although for people with Parkinson鈥檚 disease, these simple tasks we take for granted can be debilitatingly difficult. Parkinson鈥檚 affects approximately 1 in 500 people in New Zealand and about 1 percent of people aged over 60. While there is no cure, getting medication dosages right can significantly improve symptoms, particularly the sometimes-violent tremors that Parkinson鈥檚 is typically associated with.

Using technology to track symptoms听

Keeping track of tremors is an effective means of tracking the severity of the disease and adjusting medications accordingly, although this process can be inefficient; relying on manual check-ups that can leave patients waiting for weeks.

That鈥檚 where technology comes in. Led by neurologist Dr Yun Hwang at Gosford Hospital on Australia鈥檚 Central Coast, a team of registrars and clinicians have teamed up with health-tech provider Digital Aged Care鈥攑art of enterprise software giant SAP鈥攖o develop a machine learning (ML) platform designed to improve the lives of Parkinson鈥檚 patients.

The system being developed uses ML to analyse thousands of images of spirals, drawn by patients suffering various tremors (of those diagnosed with Parkinson鈥檚 and other illnesses).

Machine learning and medication听

These images are used to train an ML algorithm, so that it can automatically detect the severity of the tremor and whether it鈥檚 Parkinson鈥檚-related, giving physicians a clear idea of which medications to prescribe or adjust existing dosages.

鈥淚鈥檝e been working within the Parkinson鈥檚 space for some years now and one of the biggest challenges has always been around monitoring symptom fluctuations during the day,鈥� Dr Yun explains.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not there all the time to check up on the patient, which is where AI can be very useful.鈥�

It鈥檚 not the first-time spirals have been used in Parkinson鈥檚 research, as they offer a good indication of how intense the tremors鈥攁nd thus the disease鈥攃an be, especially when paired with ML.

Although spirals are just the beginning for Dr Yun and SAP, as the project鈥檚 next phase involves using smart watches to provide real-time insight into Parkinson鈥檚 severity. When wearing these watches, patients can draw spirals in the same way, with the watch using an accelerometer and gyroscope to generate a 3D model of the tremor, providing even greater insight into severity.

The team is also looking to rig the watch to track tremors 24/7, showing progress visually through graphs that map the times when patients are 鈥榦n or off鈥� in terms of the tremor鈥檚 severity.
