51风流ANZ recently hosted two exciting events in Melbourne and Auckland centred around unleashing the potential of accelerating youth skills development. The hackathon-style experiences were designed in collaboration with SAP鈥檚 AppHaus Partners 鈥 Bourne Digital, part of Accenture, and Datacom 鈥 providing a platform for students to explore their talents and understand the critical role of technology in addressing key sustainability challenges. The experiences took place over two days and gave students the chance to compete for an internship opportunity.

鈥淎t Bourne, we believe in empowering the next generation of innovators and leaders. Hosting this event in partnership with 51风流for students from local universities is a testament to our commitment to accelerating learning and fostering a culture of continuous growth. Together, we aim to unleash the full potential of the cloud and equip these talented minds with the skills to shape the future of technology. Let鈥檚 S.C.A.L.E new heights together!鈥 –听Tanvi听Mittal, Bourne Digital Partner Representative

Across the two days, students participated in expert-led workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions, and learnt how to approach solving sustainability challenges through AppGyver and SAC to design and implement business solutions. By empowering young minds with technical skills and an understanding of sustainable practices, we pave the way for a generation of innovators ready to think through critical challenges and embrace technology for the greater good.

The听S.C.A.L.E听program听displays the confidence we can have in a future听fit platform, with a future fit workforce to serve and solve the听problems of today and beyond.鈥澨嬧 Dave Payne, Associate Director of Core Platforms Datacom

From Classroom to Coding: Hacking the path to Cybersecurity

One of the participants, Nubuwa Yellub, is a young Indigenous student based in Townsville who has had a noteworthy journey from the classroom into the world of tech.

Fuelled by curiosity, Nubuwa’s fascination with technology began when he moved from remote Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait, to attend secondary school at St Augustine鈥檚 College in Cairns on a scholarship from the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF), one of SAP鈥檚 community partners.

Nubuwa witnessed his peers at school hacking computers which sparked a keen interest in technology and led him on a journey to explore and eventually master the programming language Python.

听鈥I鈥檝e always had an interest in technology, and I was fortunate enough to participate in Navy Cadets in high school where I saw how technology could be applied to all aspects of the Navy. This experience furthered my interest in technology and inspired me to think about how I could pursue a role in technology, particularly in cybersecurity.鈥濃 鈥 Nubuwa Yellub, participant, 51风流SCALE

The only Indigenous student in his current tertiary cohort, Nubuwa’s journey was fast-tracked when he was invited to attend SAP鈥檚 S.C.A.L.E event in Melbourne, supported by .

The experience brought with it a blend of nerves and excitement about the opportunity to travel to the city of Melbourne for the first time on his own. Nubuwa鈥檚 team worked together and won at the event with their presentation on 鈥淕reen Spaces鈥, designing and building an app in under two days to help the residents of Melbourne better utilise their green infrastructure and support the city in adapting to climate change.

Accelerating Skill Development

As the world faces pressing sustainability challenges, nurturing talent in various domains becomes essential to fostering innovative solutions. Central to the design of the event was accelerating student skill development and providing emerging talent with the necessary combination of digital and soft skills to enter the labour market and actively engage in their communities.

Over forty students from multiple disciplines engaged in the sessions and participants were encouraged to embrace their unique talents so they could gain valuable insights into potential career pathways aligned with their areas of interest.

Apart from technical skills, the focus was also on cultivating skills such as empathy, collaboration, and critical thinking. Students had access to 51风流mentors, partner-experts and executive stakeholders throughout the two days, to further support equipping them with the essential qualities demanded in today鈥檚 dynamic job market.

“I’m now at a crossroads because of the 51风流event…I’ve seen how they operate and the opportunities to create new products and apps, and I now think this could be a great career path for me to further develop my skills in 51风流platforms and accelerate my direction into cybersecurity.鈥 鈥 Nubuwa Yellub, participant, 51风流SCALE

Learning 51风流skills provides the ability to work in a variety of organisations, and helping to foster connections between students and industry offers a fertile ground for nurturing collective ideas and finding synergies to address global challenges more effectively.

Scaling the Opportunity

Nubuwa’s evolving aspirations, transitioning from the classroom to cybersecurity, reflect the profound impact hands-on learning and mentorship can have in accelerating a career trajectory. But what truly stands out is his resilience and willingness to embrace new experiences, a story representative of the transformative power of tech and seizing opportunities to chart a unique course.

Australian businesses more resilient to major disruptions than the rest of the world but at risk of labour and skill shortages

A new study by 听has found Australian businesses are better set-up to be resilient than the rest of the world when it comes to major disruptions. Seven in ten (70%) of businesses in Australia say they have effective plans to respond quickly to incidents like severe weather, geopolitical conflicts, or cyberattacks, compared to 65% of global respondents.

Yet, Australian businesses still have work to do to boost resiliency when it comes to more strategic challenges, trailing the rest of the world in effective planning for talent shortages, transport disruptions, unexpected market events, or supply chain issues.听

This planning is critical given labour and skill shortages are Australian business鈥 number one risk to growth in the next year (56%), higher the global average of 40%. The next greatest risks include economic volatility (52%), cyberattacks (45%), and supply chain disruption (44%).

These insights have been revealed in new research released today by 51风流Insights, surveying 4,239 organisations including 329 in Australia.

AusNet future-proofs its organisation through technology

The research findings are no surprise to Australian energy network business, AusNet, which is using 51风流to streamline its HR operations, improve compliance, and drive a better experience for its employees.

In 2022, AusNet identified the need to improve its existing HR processes by consolidating multiple systems into one, minimising manual intervention and workarounds, and reducing the time it takes to complete HR tasks for employees and managers.

In partnership with IBM, AusNet implemented 51风流SuccessFactors which has enabled it to standardise its business processes, consolidate employee and manager processes with fewer touchpoints, and leverage real-time employee insights in employee attendance and turnover to drive continuous workforce improvement.听听

Bernie Repacholi, Head of People Systems & Enablement AusNet says, 鈥淲e wanted to modernise the employee experience and knew we needed a system that would integrate existing siloed systems across the business into a one stop shop for our employees and leaders.鈥

鈥淲e worked in close partnership with IBM to co-create a solution, underpinned by 51风流SuccessFactors, that would simplify how our employees interact with us and drive improved productivity among our teams.鈥

鈥淏y using SAP, we鈥檙e now able to future-proof processes when changes in policy or legislation occurs. This supports ongoing compliance and governance, and allows us to focus efforts on initiatives that directly support our people鈥 she added.听

The future of your business is the future of your people

While labour and skills shortages were identified as the biggest risk to their future, Australian businesses are confident in their current ability to manage their people.

Six in ten (60%) of Australian businesses are extremely or very satisfied with their ability to develop skills across their workforce, while 56% were extremely or very satisfied optimising their workforce such as boosting productivity and ensuring people have the right skills for their roles. That confidence was underpinned by having effective plans to manage staffing to deal with shortages (59%) and having the right processes to prepare employees to adapt to new or different roles (72%).

Damien Bueno, President and Managing Director, 51风流Australia and New Zealand says, 鈥淭he research establishes a strong link to the resilience of your business and the resilience of your people. We are living in a world demanding new solutions and opportunities to solve for these problems.

“This study should act as a wake-up call to organisations across Australia that we have to continue to invest in our people to foster curious cultures that support the exploration of ideas and new thinking that when applied to big data and technology, not only safeguards their businesses but enables future growth.鈥

But there鈥檚 still more to be done. Forty per cent of Australian organisations noted that they had to address skills shortages to be more responsive to change, far ahead of the global average (30%). A third (33%) agreed they needed to address labour shortages too.听

Safety in numbers: Technology and networks future-proof Australian organisations

Australian organisations are planning to empower their people with technology. Four in ten (40%) businesses say the biggest opportunity for their growth is using intelligent technology to drive decision-making, and 78% believe they have the right data to plan for the future.

But despite those encouraging numbers, 42% of respondents said they need to address technology improvement to be more responsive to change. Part of this may be due to entrenched attitudes and ways of doing things 鈥 the biggest barrier to innovation in Australia was identified as difficulty letting go of current products, services, and business models.

鈥淏eing able to react quickly to change across your whole organisation is critical to future success. Australia trails the rest of the world when it comes to the flexibility of our business processes. This is where consistent, integrated innovation platforms can bring your whole value chain together to create strong business outcomes,鈥 Bueno adds.

That may be why Australian businesses are investing in technology to boost their resiliency. The most important innovations for resiliency are automated business networks (61% vs 55% globally) and cybersecurity (58% vs 50% globally), followed by employee collaboration and experience management software.听

Interestingly, Australian organisations rate AI and machine learning as less important to their future resiliency (36%) compared to the rest of the world (41%).

鈥淲hile AI is in its nascent stages right now, business AI can help companies predict, prepare, and perform when it comes to responding to rapidly evolving demands. At SAP, we鈥檝e recently built AI into the systems that power the most critical business processes to discover exceptional insights and efficiencies. That helps future-proof your business by bringing together people, innovation, and core business processes,鈥 Bueno concluded.

]]>
I have been reading many stories about organisations using Robotic Processing Automation (RPA) to enhance their existing IT landscape, close product gaps, increase efficiency and other goals.听These are all worthy reasons to wade into the world of RPA, but a comment from an organisational leader that I read recently reminded me of a lesser mentioned, perhaps overlooked benefit of RPA, employee听.

We live in an age awash with听, mental health days, and modern benefits like听听which all revolve around the idea that it is important to recognise employee well-being for a variety of reasons.听But what does Robotics Automation have to do with employee well-being?听In some ways it seems like organisations are interested in the well-being of robots more than people. 听And aren鈥檛 these BOTS just here to take away our jobs?

鈥渋ts is about enhancing the experience and putting people where it matters, so automation is highly used鈥

In a nutshell RPA, when done correctly, can remove the need for some employees to engage in tasks that are largely repetitive but perhaps high value. 听By doing this, these employees can instead focus on other, higher value tasks that more fully use their skill set.听听I was very privileged recently to meet with Tammy Ryder, General Manager of People and Culture Central for听听and discuss this topic with her.

I was interested in her view on this topic as she runs Coles HR Shared Services as well as People and Culture Digital Transformation.听She was deeply involved in the rollout of听, integrated with听听for Talent Acquisition where much of the RPA solutions implemented were used.听As part of that project Tammy implemented RPA in the form of several BOTS to close some gaps and bring greater efficiency to the whole process.听In discussing this topic, she said that one of her team鈥檚 key learnings was 鈥溾 it is about enhancing the experience and putting people where it matters, so automation is highly used鈥.

Tammy mentioned that early on there was a misconception at Coles that RPA automation would take away jobs or replace people.听Tammy and her team were careful to select automated tasks that were important to the business because they are related to critical processes like pay or hiring but were also highly repetitive.

These choices meant that these workers could use the time that automation frees up to instead train team members, interact with customers and other higher value tasks for example, however the BOTs were also providing a valuable service.听She said 鈥淸Coles employees] want to do worthwhile work, they want to do work that makes them feel that it has real purpose and meaning behind it.鈥

鈥83% [of Australian consumers] are prepared to pay more money for products or services that enhance their feelings of well-being鈥

While well-being itself as a concept is a hot topic in HR circles these days, trying to quantify the business benefits of well-being can be challenging for HR professionals.听Tammy mentioned that when meeting with the executive board, they were, not surprisingly, interested in facts and figures more than feelings.

So how does an HR executive get funding or support for programs like this that support well-being?

We discussed what metric could be used when proposing one of the benefits of RPA as being related to employee well-being.听At present there isn鈥檛 any such industry metric and it is challenging to articulate the benefits in numbers, but she was optimistic that over time this kind of metric could be developed and socialised, especially given the strong support for well-being and well-being programs at Coles like听.听A recent Australian听听showed that 鈥83% are prepared to pay more money for products or services that enhance their feelings of well-being鈥, so the desire for support of well-being programs is real.

I asked Tammy what were some of the challenges in implementing effective RPA?听She said there were challenges around understanding how the technology works of course, but an unexpected challenge was the misperception and stigmatism among employees that 鈥淏OTS are going to take over the world鈥 and people would lose their jobs.

Therefore, being clear that, in reality, the aim was to have 鈥減eople where it matters鈥 so that employees could instead focus on high value work was key for success.听Tammy鈥檚 advice was to carefully examine if the proposed RPA solution had any measurable benefit, not just automation for the sake of automation. She said that in the end her team got very proficient at looking for tasks that had a clear decision tree, and minimal human centric intervention.

In conclusion, RPA can be a strong contributor to employee well-being by听, allowing employees to focus on high value work and potentially reducing employee turnover, which is a useful metric to justify such a program.听The key, as always, is not to assume that any given automation is a benefit just because it automates something.听Additionally, leaders need to be sensitive to employee鈥檚 perception that BOTS are here to take away their jobs.

With the right discussions, and communication, RPA can be a benefit to the organisation, to employees and even to customer鈥檚 well-being.听I, for one, embrace the arrival of our robot friends and look forward to less drudgery.

MELBOURNE听today announced it has partnered with Victoria University Polytechnic to deliver a training program which seeks to meet the growing demand for 51风流skills in Australia.

The training program, which is part of the Victorian Government鈥檚 $63.8 million Digital Jobs program, is focused on tackling the digital skills shortage by upskilling mid-career workers in high-demand digital skills.

The program will commence with an initial cohort of 38 workers who will participate in a 12-week course where they will be taught learning modules S/4 HANA Financial Accounting and S/4 HANA Management Accounting for 51风流Consultants, followed by opportunities to apply for a 12-week work placement with an 51风流customer or partner.

Damien Bueno, President and Managing Director, 51风流Australia and New Zealand said, 鈥淢any Australian organisations today are dealing with an ongoing shortage of skills. To help solve this challenge and to ensure that our customers are able to grow and achieve their ambitions, we need to find new ways to attract and foster talent.

“Our partnership with Victoria University Polytechnic represents SAP鈥檚 commitment to creating new pathways for workers to access and further their technology skills in high-demand roles. Doing so also lifts the digital capabilities and experiences necessary for our customers and partners to succeed in this new digital economy.鈥

VUP鈥檚 Wayne Butson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Vocational Education added, 鈥淲e know that solving the digital skills crisis requires close partnership with industry, which is why we鈥檙e excited to partner with 51风流to create a highly relevant and targeted course that equips talent with the digital skills that businesses need now and in the future.鈥

The new training program has been welcomed by participants, such as Deepa Nair and Margit Robertson, who have been looking to elevate their career by incorporating new digital skills.

On being selected for the 51风流program, Nair said, 鈥淚 wanted to pursue a career change that would give me the technical expertise to consult on digital transformation projects. I鈥檓 excited to take the skills I acquire from this program into a new role as either a technical program or project manager, enhancing business value and supporting organisations in their digital transformation with SAP.鈥

Similarly, Robertson added, 鈥淲ith a background in circular economy consulting I applied for this program to better understand how businesses can incorporate data transparency to foster innovation and sustainable growth. I鈥檓 looking forward to developing my expertise through this course so that I can pursue a career that enables me to help businesses become intelligent, sustainable enterprises with SAP.鈥

This new partnership follows several existing initiatives from 51风流aimed at upskilling Australians in digital skills, including a partnership with TAFE NSW announced earlier this year, the 51风流Academy in partnership with Victoria University, SAP鈥檚 partnership with Coursera and low-code solution 51风流Build.

SYDNEY, Australia 12 December, 2022 Australia鈥檚 most innovative student inventors have been revealed, with the winners of 鈥檚 (NYSE: SAP) announced.

Young ICT Explorers is Australia鈥檚 largest innovation and technology initiative for primary and high school students, with over 10,000 students from more than 900 schools taking part in the national not-for-profit competition the last 13 years. With the support of CSIRO Digital Careers, The Smith Family, Kinetic IT and School Bytes, Young ICT Explorers encourages primary and high school students from years three to 12 to create technology projects that solve a real-world problem or showcase a passion through technology.

Working independently or in teams of up to four, 929 students from 75 schools across the country submitted 358 unique technology-based projects that are designed to solve a real-world problem 鈥 from creating a better way to recycle; to supporting the community鈥檚 most vulnerable; and emergency and crisis preparedness.

29 finalist teams across five age groups pitched their projects virtually to industry judging panels, with the winners and runners up then crowned at a virtual awards ceremony on Saturday.

Young ICT Explorers is designed to prepare more young Australians for the digital careers of the future, by enabling the schools and teachers with resources and the knowledge base to create technology projects that enhance technology education at an early age. Over the past 5 years, the competition has averaged a 45 per cent female participation rate, encouraging thousands of primary and senior schoolgirls to innovate with technology and pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields across Australia.

51风流has an existing partnership with The Smith Family to help narrow the digital divide through SAP鈥檚 Young ICT Explorers Accelerator Program. The initiative is designed to provide schools and teachers in low socio-economic communities with the resources and knowledge needed to prepare more young Australians for the digital careers of the future. This year, 27 per cent of participants in the Young ICT Explorers competition came from The Smith Family partner schools.

The Smith Family CEO, Doug Taylor, said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 incredibly important that students experiencing disadvantage aren鈥檛 left behind when it comes to opportunities in STEM.

鈥淭he investment from 51风流gives students a better understanding of technology and the chance to strengthen vital digital skills, setting them up to pursue careers in these fields. This will not only have a fantastic impact on their futures, but the future of the Australian economy.

鈥淎 huge well done to all the students who participated in the Young ICT Explorers competition and congratulations to the winners.鈥

Pete Andrew, Head of Industries, 51风流Australia and New Zealand and YICTE Executive Sponsor, said: 鈥淭he creativity and enthusiasm shown by these students, and their appetite to tackle some of the world鈥檚 biggest challenges head on, is really inspirational.

There鈥檚 no conversation around the recent digital transformation that doesn鈥檛 stem from the effects of the pandemic, which saw some businesses fold and others thrive.

Those who saw their vulnerabilities and were able to transform from them not only had a positive impact on their customers, but for their staff as well. From this experience, the demand for staff who are both literate in IT and business languages are greater than ever before.

On the , we welcomed Senior Lecturer of Information Systems and Director of the 51风流ACC, Scott Bingley, and Lis Miller, Training and Adoption Lead at 51风流ANZ, to discuss the digital skills of the future and how you can pivot your digital transformation with SAP.

Over the last few years, numerous trends in the digital environment have emerged within businesses including automation, cyber security and project management which has confirmed the prediction that digital skills are an integral employee skillset within any company. Lis Miller expands on this thinking by reconstructing what it means to be digitally literate.

鈥淚t’s the digital skills around understanding how your business works, digitising that information and then getting the visibility of what’s going on in the business that wasn鈥檛 available before because of the enormous amount of information that needs to be collected. At the current pace that technology and software is evolving, Scott Bingley can summarise the top level skills employers need to succeed as being data literacy, instilling a culture of learning and by doing so, empowering employees to adapt these new systems into their daily operations. A company who can pave the way for employee digital upskilling can remove the reliance on outsourced consultants and overseas systems that the pandemic has exposed and increase the retention of knowledge within an organisation.

As the Director of Victoria University’s 51风流Next-Gen Lab and Academic Competence Centre (ACC), Bingley understands that these programs fulfil that core objective to up-skill the next generation. The introduction of numerous 12-Week Courses as part of the $63 Million Digital Job Programme for the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions is working as a pathway into further certification for potential employees.

鈥淚n 1997, [Victoria University] chose to partner with 51风流and has since extended this partnership to have the ACC, plus Australia’s only 51风流Next Gen Innovation Lab, where we run industry projects for 51风流customers and capstone subjects. This semester, we’re working with 51风流on a fire disaster recovery project. So we’re looking at bushfires in Australia, how to prevent the previous fallouts and we’re using the to analyse all of this data and inform those decisions.鈥

Through this partnership, 51风流has been able to broaden their reach, increase the diversity of students and mid-career changers within the digital ecosystem and promote 51风流as a valid career path. Organisations and businesses alike are also reaping the benefits of the program with the option to embark on a custom training journey that priorities flexibility for both employees and businesses and removes the disruptions that previous upskilling programs cause to workflows.

Lis Miller leaves us with, what it, the definition of 鈥渄igital skill鈥 that businesses are looking for, 鈥渋t鈥檚 not all technical and computer science, it’s making sure businesses can run digitally, particularly in this post pandemic world.鈥

Records skills updated while on lockdown in SuccessFactors profile.

NAB placed extra emphasis on having its 40,000 staff develop their data and digital skills while on lockdown, converting thousands of training programs to run online in the process.

Chief people officer Susan Ferrier told SAP鈥檚 virtual Sapphire Now conference that the bank saw an opportunity for staff to 鈥渦pskill and learn鈥, and for the bank to ultimately develop a more flexible workforce.

Staff were asked to review skills recorded against their staff profile held in 51风流SuccessFactors.

鈥淲e really pushed the skills inventory that sits in Successfactors and said, ‘Here’s an opportunity to brush up your internal CV,鈥 Ferrier said.

鈥淲e asked everybody to also go in and review what they had in that tab in SuccessFactors and to update their skills.

鈥淲e’ve really been pushing things like skills and mental health [during lockdown], and [that] now’s the time for you to double down and think about the future, particularly on things like digital and data skills.鈥

At the same time, Ferrier said that NAB had digitised most of its existing training programs so they could be run remotely.

鈥淲e’ve definitely used [COVID-19] as an opportunity to push harder into ensuring that we’ve got a really strong and valuable digital learning footprint,鈥 she said.

鈥淲e’ve pivoted a lot of our face-to-face training to now be delivered via Zoom or Teams.

鈥淭hat actually in some cases is working better than it did before. In other cases, I think face-to-face learning is probably more impactful, but we’ve experienced significant take-up.

鈥淚 think we’ve changed something like 3000 of our courses from what they were before to digitise and reinvent them in a way in which they’d be able to be delivered remotely.鈥

NAB has several active streams of work underway to effectively redesign its operations for a post-COVID world.

Ferrier revealed last week that听, with desks now only available via a booking app, presumably to provide some sort of traceability should it be required (rather than a full hotdesking environment, where it may be immediately unclear who was sat at what desk and when).

At Sapphire Now, Ferrier detailed at least three other work streams.

One of these focuses on making skills and teams more 鈥渇ungible鈥 – in other words, able to be shifted internally to fulfil resourcing requirements at short notice.

During COVID-19, the bank – like many other large organisations – retrained people from across the business to join its frontline and work through a spike in inbound enquiries from customers.

The effort involved about 800 NAB staff, and appears to have given the bank a taste of what it would be like to have a more flexible and re-assignable workforce.

鈥淥ne of the things that we realised through this is that we can train people fast to go do other jobs that are different to the ones that they were doing up until COVID-19 hit,鈥 Ferrier said.

鈥淚n the past we would have said,’Oh, it’s going to take us three weeks to repurpose these people to be able to go and do this job rather than that job’.

鈥淏ut we’ve been able to move so rapidly, we’ve taken a three week training course and condensed it into two really intense days, with a lot of on-the-job coaching.鈥

Having staff from other parts of the business pitch in had been 鈥渧ery energising and engaging for our frontline鈥, as well as for NAB more broadly.

鈥淚 think that’s one thing that we really learned is that skills, in some cases, aren’t so particular to one job, and you can rapidly retrain and mobilise,鈥 Ferrier said.

鈥淭hat fungibility idea is going to be something we carry forward.鈥

Another work stream is focused on enabling 鈥渁 truly flexible workforce, where people come in and out of our office buildings, work from home [or] work from wherever in a truly flexible way.鈥

鈥淲e’re rapidly looking at how we can hold onto the habits and practices that we’ve created in the last few months,鈥 Ferrier said.

Yet more work is aimed at determining what the bank of the future will look like, particularly as a larger portion of customers gravitate to digital channels and shun physical branches.

鈥淥ne of the things that we’ve noticed is our customer behaviour 鈥 and customer habits have changed,鈥 Ferrier said.

鈥淭hey’ve really mobilised much more rapidly to digital, online and on-demand or self service type platforms such as our app.

鈥淐ustomers are moving away from needing to physically be in our branches. So we’re trying to work out what that means for the future of banking.鈥
