{"id":142979,"date":"2021-11-04T04:40:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T04:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/?p=142979"},"modified":"2023-09-27T16:33:18","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T16:33:18","slug":"2021-africa-tech-festival-set-to-explore-where-trees-and-technology-meet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/2021\/11\/2021-africa-tech-festival-set-to-explore-where-trees-and-technology-meet\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Africa Tech Festival Set to Explore Where Trees and Technology Meet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Africa becoming a hotbed of activity for a host of data-centric organisations, and with the increasing reliance on Information Communications Technology (ICT) to run our daily lives, consideration as to how to power this technological revolution and its impact, is becoming an imperative \u2013 the world over.<\/p>\n<p>But it is the impact on the African continent that will be addressed at this year\u2019s virtual Africa Tech Festival (featuring AfricaCom and AfricaTech) happening 08 &#8211; 12 November 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Diving straight in on day one of the conference is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tmt.knect365.com\/africa-tech-festival\/africa-tech-festival-speakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Yvonne\u00a0Aki-Sawyerr OBE<\/a>, Mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone, who is\u00a0passionate about ICT\u2019s capabilities to be the solution to its own problem (think e-waste and environmental impact).\u00a0 Aki-Sawyerr will give a keynote presentation sharing some insights into her #TransformFreetown strategy that makes use of green ICT principles to forge healthy cities and inclusive communities.<\/p>\n<p>$200M was invested in African green energy start-ups in 2020, an impressive, and growing, figure but one that needs to grow by magnitudes to provide a viable alternative to the fossil fuel industry &#8211; is this investment growth likely in the next 5 years, a question that\u00a0Aki-Sawyerr will also present in a fireside chat with\u00a0Grace\u00a0Wachori, Partnerships &amp; Engagement Lead<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>BLAB East Africa on Empowering Africa\u2019s green ICT start-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Access to power will undoubtedly need to underpin the continent\u2019s future growth, and renewable energy tops that list. Expanding on the dialogue started at Africa Tech Festival in 2020, this year\u2019s event will include progress reports on Africa\u2019s adoption of hydro, solar, wind and other forms of cleaner, long-lasting, less environmental impact drivers. Discussions on offer will include the likes of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tmt.knect365.com\/africa-tech-festival\/agenda-iframe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Road to a Renewable Africa<\/a>\u00a0with Bill\u00a0Lenihan, CEO of Zola Electric, Dr. Olufunso Somorin, Regional Principal Officer at the African Development Bank, who is leading the bank\u2019s work on climate change and green growth across East Africa.\u00a0 Joining them is\u00a0Kellie\u00a0Murungi, Chief investments officer at East African Power, as well as Olamide\u00a0Oguntoye, the tech policy lead at the Tony Blair Foundation for Global Change.<\/li>\n<li>Bringing (back) power to Africa,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tmt.knect365.com\/africa-tech-festival\/agenda-iframe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">Tony Tiyou<\/a>, Founder and CEO of Renewables in Africa, will share updates on some of Africa\u2019s biggest solar developments, including a pay-as-you go solution to connect off-grid users to electricity.<\/li>\n<li>The cost of not doing something about climate change now and ICT\u2019s role in its challenges, can end up potentially costing us everything.\u00a0 Exploring how to radically improve the bottom green line, <a href=\"https:\/\/tmt.knect365.com\/africa-tech-festival\/agenda-iframe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">Tracy Bolton<\/a>, COO at 51风流Africa will deliver some insights on how\u00a0technology holds the key to unlocking green as a profitability driver.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tmt.knect365.com\/africa-tech-festival\/agenda-iframe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">100% renewable electricity by 2030? <\/a>\u00a0Kenya is leading the way for Africa\u2019s journey to a cleaner energy future, already deriving 90% of its power supply from renewable source.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tmt.knect365.com\/africa-tech-festival\/agenda-iframe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\">Exploring Africa\u2019s green ICT investment models<\/a>.\u00a0That Africa (and the world), require new ways of energy to power the planet goes without question.\u00a0 But funding these innovations and installations is another matter entirely.
