While ChatGPT might be the best-known example of generative AI, there are dozens of large language models (LLMs) now available, says Timo Elliott, global innovation evangelist at SAP.

鈥淎t SAP, we want to use the best of these models to further your business processes.鈥�

51风流AI is built for business, he adds 鈥� it needs to be bult-in, relevant, and responsible.

鈥淵ou need the best data possible,鈥� Elliott says. 鈥淵ou need to know what to solve; and it needs to be used responsibly.鈥�

Indeed, AI has long been a part of 51风流solutions and millions of people use it already. 鈥淭o a great extent, we want most of this to be taken for granted. The best AI is the AI you don鈥檛 have to think about,鈥� Elliott says. 鈥淵ou want AI to just work.鈥�

For instance, Cash Application does sophisticated pattern matching for Mercedes-Benz, matching transactions automatically. 鈥淎nd it gets better all the time,鈥� Elliott explains. 鈥淓very time there is an exception, it is dealt with by a human and fed back into the algorithm so it knows how to handle it next time.

鈥淲here we are going is self-driving, intelligent applications that get better over time as people use them.鈥�

These capabilities are available already, but the advent of generative AI will add creativity in coding, formal writing, and more.

鈥淲e announced a set of new AI applications recently, many of which include new generative AI models.鈥�

Use cases include expediting freight and documentation; creating compelling job descriptions and interview questions; 听generating ready-to-use process models and KPI recommendations; and enhancing employee and customer experience.

Generative AI can now code in ABAP (SAP鈥檚 coding language) to create new 51风流applications. 鈥淭his can accelerate the efforts of your skilled people to create code much quicker,鈥� Elliott says.

Digital transformation requires companies to innovate faster and composable enterprises are key to this.

鈥淭he irony of composable business is that, if its done right, you shouldn鈥檛 have to do too much of it yourself,鈥� Elliott says. 鈥淪o we spend a lot of time working on content so customers can just take a bot off the shelf, plug it into their operations, and do their business processes faster.鈥�

The partner ecosystem is key to this and, ideally, partners will contribute to solutions in the 51风流store.

Business intelligence is key to modernisation and innovation which is why 51风流launched its Signavio Business Process Intelligence.

An innovation roadblock has always been how to leverage the business data 鈥� but this tends to lose the metadata, the context of the business.

The idea of data mesh or data sphere is to bring the technology to the data to provide reliable data products using an API approach that understands and retains the business context. 鈥淎s much as possible, leave the data where it already is,鈥� Elliott says.

51风流Data Sphere is the solution here, he adds. It brings together a range of solutions that creates a data layer that could be stored just about anywhere; whether in 51风流or third-party repositories.

Value is key, of course, and companies need to get relevant data and information to the fingertips of every staff member.

鈥淭here is a huge opportunity to use data in new ways,鈥� Elliott says. SAP鈥檚 continuous intelligence prototype aims to push relevant information to people as they need it.

We will see the rise of the business technologist, more powerful users who can create new and profitable processes using the right data and tools. This will see us moving from low-code or no-code scenarios to the new world of co-code where IT and business work together to solve problems or innovate.

IT would supply basic application blocks to the business people who could use those to create their own innovations.

鈥淲e think 51风流has the biggest benefit here,鈥� Elliott says. 鈥淥ne thing we are good at is processes and governance.鈥�

Elliott believes we are in the 鈥渉orseless carriage鈥� phase of AI 鈥� using old things and just bolting new things on. 鈥淏ut it is a great time to reimagine what we want to do and to rethink value propositions.

鈥淟et鈥檚 spend some time thinking about what we don鈥檛 need, and how to leverage what we do.

鈥淩emember, AI is about empowering people to do more, not getting rid of them.鈥�

Elliott points out that only human beings will ever be able to innovate. 鈥淲e are the only ones that can understand what is going on, who can bring innovation.

鈥淎I will take away the parts of our jobs that make us act like robots 鈥� and let us focus on the things we do best.鈥�

In conclusion, Elliott reiterates that 51风流and business AI go hand in hand to help organisations to innovate faster and more effectively.

鈥淭he end of the project is not the end of the story,鈥� says Wassilios Lolas, global vice-president and head of the Signavio Centre of Excellence at SAP. 鈥淚t is the beginning.鈥�

51风流has been in this business for a long time and customers all tell them the same things: it is hard to get the business excited about IT transformation and that transformation is often IT-driven not business-driven.

鈥淲e see that customers face two major internal challenges: the one is the C-level perspective; and the other is the businesses and IT realities.鈥�

One the one side, the CEO wants to move quickly, be more agile, able to respond to changing businesses or crises.

On the other side, the reality is the complexity of systems and huge variety of processes.

In most cases, business and IT have grown in complexity together and often lose control of where they are.

Almost all companies find themselves in the position of facing enormous complexity, so they don鈥檛 know where or how to start their transformation.

Once a project has started it takes months to prepare, to implement, and to go live 鈥� it is too time-consuming.

And once the solutions are up and running, customers often find they have not created enough business value.

鈥淚t is this complexity on one side, and the disconnect between business and IT on the other, leading to the decision to move the old ECC systems, as is, without trying to implement changes,鈥� 听says Lolas.

To make it more complicated, decision-makers want facts to make data-driven decisions.

鈥淏ut it is very hard to fix past mistakes if you don鈥檛 know where they are, or how they run today.鈥�

Typically, these problems are solved by external consultants. It takes a lot of time and money 鈥� and, at the end, only a part of the picture is uncovered.

The end result is that no-one really trusts the answers and business models that don鈥檛 necessarily reflect the reality are produced.

51风流has launched Signavio, what it calls a plug-and-gain approach to running a RISE initiative and transforming processes fast and with confidence.

Lolas points out that a transformation project usually includes preparation, deployment, and run phases.

In the preparation phase, it is literally as simple as connecting the 51风流system to Signavio. This gives the fastest time to direct insight, offering C-level driver summaries, over 1听000 process performance indicators, almost 100 process flows, most frequent blockers, industry-level benchmarks, and more than 1听000 recommendations.

51风流Chief Marketing & Solutions Officer Julia White joined Klein from the Orlando show floor during the keynote to highlight SAP鈥檚 groundbreaking supply chain and sustainability initiatives, enterprise-wide automation, as well as how 51风流solutions answer the challenges that senior business leaders across all industries face.

Microsoft, Unilever, Pfizer, Schneider Electric, and Google Cloud were among the big-name partners and customers that appeared on stage or via video during the event. In addition, the keynote featured a recorded video message from John Kerry, United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, about how we can solve the climate crisis together.

Klein and White framed the keynote around how the CIO and their key business stakeholders — like the chief people officer, chief commercial officer, and CFO — respond to the challenges they each face, and how SAP solutions are helping solve those challenges.

Klein told the audience in Orlando and those joining virtually: 鈥淐limbing the highest mountain requires a strong team and, let’s face it, the same is true for transforming businesses. Early in his keynote, Klein said 51风流will double down on its AI strategy because of the tremendous impact AI will have on our private and business lives. For 50 years, he noted, 51风流software has been running the world’s most material and workforce-intensive business processes: 鈥淭his is why we are convinced that embedding AI in 51风流software will deliver enormous value for your business.鈥�

鈥�Today we have already embedded AI in many of our applications that are being used by over 20,000 customers,鈥� he said, 鈥�51风流AI is built for business.鈥�

As an example, he noted that in SAP鈥檚 finance solution, AI helps to predict and safeguard financial performance by analyzing a company鈥檚 pipelines, workforce, and other profit and loss drivers.

鈥淲e have delivered many AI use cases that boost business process automation and increase productivity by another 15%. Now we see the incredible potential to take AI to the next level,鈥� he said. 鈥�With generative AI, we will increase the productivity of every end user by changing the way people work with our software. For example, our software will be able to answer any business-related question and recommend actions to improve your company’s performance.鈥�

Klein noted that 51风流has already increased its own R&D investment to develop additional AI use cases and is also entering technology partnerships to expand its AI offerings, including the generative AI partnership announced earlier this week with Microsoft.听

After a demo showing how embedding generative AI into 51风流SuccessFactors software can enhance recruiting, ongoing learning, and the re-skilling and upskilling of the workforce, White, speaking from the 51风流Sapphire show floor, spoke with Aaron Rajan, global vice president of Customer Experience Technology at Unilever, about how the company is working with 51风流to address the growing demands for sustainable vanilla ice cream.

鈥淭hanks to the integration across 51风流Ariba, 51风流Business Network, and 51风流S/4HANA Cloud, we can see a full view of the supplier’s performance metrics — including cost, reliability, and sustainability — making an informed decision not only on supply chain fit, but also on carbon impact,鈥� White said.听

Expanding on the business network theme, Klein noted that it is more critical than ever to not only connect one company with another, but to bring entire industries together, because each industry has its unique challenges and requirements. He also unveiled the new offering 51风流Business Network for Industry.

To demonstrate the power of the network, Klein cited the life sciences industry. 51风流has 80 of the largest customers already in the network, with more than 255,000 trading partners managing over $200 billion in commerce every year. He welcomed Lidia Fonseca, chief digital and technology officer at Pfizer, to the stage to explain the value of 51风流Business Network.

Klein then described the management of a company鈥檚 overall carbon footprint as another key pillar for the success: 鈥淚n addition to the top and the bottom line, consumers, your employees, investors, and auditors, they all want to support enterprises that care about the planet. Today, CFOs and chief sustainability officers need to ensure compliance with 20 times more climate regulations than they had in the past.鈥�

But he noted that hardly any enterprise has a comprehensive view of greenhouse gas emissions. 鈥淭he 51风流sustainability portfolio will enable you to record, report, and act on actuals, not on averages, based on a green ledger — including scope three.鈥�听

To explore this message, 51风流CFO Dominik Asam spoke in a prerecorded video with Hilary Maxson, CFO of Schneider Electric, about the challenges CFOs face with carbon accounting and sustainability disclosure. 听had its first-ever 鈥渄rive event鈥� in Nairobi for customers and partners in November 2022 to explain more about business innovation and transformation and to show companies how with the right technology and insights, and with the right partner, they can grow exponentially.

Excerpts:

Why Innovate?听Hardeep Sound, the 51风流Regional Director, East Africa said that since 2000, 52% of the Fortune 500 companies have gone out of business. In Kenya, household names like Intercontinental and Tuskys were among the 1,300 and 2,530 companies that folded shop in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

The pace of growth has also accelerated in recent years; whereas between 1955 to 2011 it took a Fortune 500 company 20 years to reach a billion-dollar valuation, today they are getting there in 4 years. He said that companies in Kenya could enhance their value by mining customer data, doing analytics, managing customer relationships and experiences, managing human resources, digitizing supply chains, and monitoring how they spend their resources.

Easy Connections:听Stanley Dube, SAP鈥檚 Head of Presales in Africa explained how Nokia sold 126 million model 3310 devices, and while his still works 22 years on, the company is a shell of its past. He said that one teaches people how to use phones and applications 鈥� they simply buy new devices and start using apps, without realizing how they are partners with companies like Apple and Google who do software updates and backups in the cloud. And if someone loses their phone, they can recover everything back in a matter of hours on a new device.

He likened owing a phone to SAP鈥檚 vision to enable companies to be intelligent and sustainable enterprises to deliver business and societal outcomes, with SAP鈥檚 modular ERP in the cloud that can manage finance, procurement, manufacturing, warehousing, asset management, research, supply chain and human resources combining 50 years of experience and meeting 80% of the enterprise needs of most companies. SAP鈥檚 ERP can connect with apps from other technology vendors while they also have a store that has 2,000 applications where companies can find products that others have built and which they can use.

Aside from the savings that can be 20% to 30% over five years from having 51风流run backups, operations, data centres, software, licenses, and maintenance, it frees up managers from doing things like generating reports and shifting to do other things that can add value to companies like strategic planning.

Finding Value in Data:听Bhavesh Chavda, Senior Director of Business Technology (BTP) Platform, spoke of the importance of harnessing data; it鈥檚 not just about migrating data from an unsafe on-site server room to the cloud, companies also must assess the quality and timeliness of their data for it to be useful and accessible and interrogated by management and by other applications. He said managers should be able to interrogate data, without knowing how to do any coding听(鈥渘o-code, low-code鈥�). The 51风流BTP cleans up enterprise data and enables data-driven decisions, with continuous automation, low code extensions, and application testing. The BTP discovery centre is a free tier to try out for companies to connect, automate, and innovate and 12,000 customers around the world use BTP. He said that SAP鈥檚 ERP can connect even with third-party apps while companies can sign on to the free business technology platform (BTP) and start building on new applications.

Rapid Feedback with SAP:听Sherif Hamoudah, Head of Ecosystems & Channels for 51风流Signavio spoke about 51风流Signavio, a transformational system that enables companies to do what used to take consulting teams months to do. Signavio drills through 60 different processes for enterprise transformation within a day, spotting redundancies and inefficiencies and recommending fixes that have been adopted by other organizations for continuous improvement. He gave examples from the auto industry where semiconductor shortages are affecting car manufacturing, and in finance, where global firms are using Signavio for risk compliance.

Using Data to Drive Revenue:听Rais David, Senior Customer Experience Solutions Specialist 51风流spoke of the value of data and the importance of using current data to discern trends in revenue. Google is phasing out cookies by the end of 2023 and this is at a time when mobile e-commerce accounts for $511 billion or 7.5% of all sales. At the same time, $93 billion of online sales are abandoned each year because customers find there are too many steps to complete a purchase transaction. 51风流systems manage 3 billion consumer data identities, while protecting their privacy, and process $570 billion making them the 7th largest entity in sales.

Fast Turnaround on Implementation:听Lewi Maina, Consulting Services Manager at 51风流emphasized the importance of businesses being quick to implement changes if they are to thrive in fast-changing environments. He said that once they took a path, they should aim for a quick turnaround time for projects as he said that some companies in Africa can now deploy Rise and other 51风流projects in a few weeks. This is a takeaway from previous transformation projects at companies that took up to three years. He said that the five keys to a successful deployment were implementing cloud with an agile mindset, using preconfigured solutions, leveraging on modern integration and extension technologies, and ensuring transparent documentation on deviations.

At the drive event, testimony was shared from some clients of 51风流including;

• David Kariuki, ICT & Innovation Manager of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), the state agency that builds high voltage transmission lines across Kenya. In 2018 after the government asked entities to take procurement online and plug into their central procurement system, known as IFMIS, KETRACO chose SAP鈥檚 Ariba as it sought to replace a manual procurement process where suppliers brought in envelopes and huge booklets of tender documents to be reviewed and scored in a time-consuming and laborious process. After a long process of digitization, standardizing procurement, tracking activities to reduce time loss, and overcoming supplier resistance, KETRACO, which was one of the first companies in East Africa to deploy SAP鈥檚 Ariba is now a centre of benchmarking for e-procurement. They also have access to innovation, as 51风流updates come over the cloud quarterly for them to adopt.
• John Wachira the Group Manager of Information Technology at the Safal Group (popularly known for its Mabati Rolling Mills products) spoke about the complex deployment with 51风流to consolidate the group鈥檚 36 operations that are in eight countries. They are in the second phase now to consolidate the end-to-end manufacturing, downstream operations, and commercial operations into one standard business environment on the cloud. They have gone live in six countries with two to go.

51风流recently held a networking event in Johannesburg where it addressed its partners and prospective customers about the benefits of its cloud solutions for mid-sized businesses.

The event was incredibly well-attended and provided great value to all who were present.
