Diageo, Maersk, Versuni and Fitcoin select SAP鈥檚 business-ready innovations to revolutionise business models and accelerate transformation

Diageo makes its largest tech investment to standardise its practises across the world

Diageo, producer of Guinness, Smirnoff and Johnnie Walker, has partnered with 51风流and IBM Consulting in a multi-million-pound programme, which is Diageo鈥檚 largest investment in its technology and services to date.

The multi-year programme will help Diageo to:

  • Improve the way it interacts with customers and suppliers, through the implementation of automation and advanced workflow solutions.
  • Move its global organisation to one single operating platform, creating efficiency in its IT landscape and technology support model.
  • Transform performance reporting, leading to better insight to maximise trade opportunities.
  • Further digitise its controls and compliance environment creating a more robust and resilient business.
  • Move to standardised ways of operating allowing for greater agility and flexibility in the way we respond to emerging market trends.

Diageo will implement the new cloud-based model, RISE with 51风流S/4HANA Cloud, across 180 countries, ensuring its IT infrastructure is simplified and supported in a unified way.

The business transformation programme will put Diageo at the forefront of customer services and will increase its resilience in a landscape of evolving consumer expectations and a fast-changing economic climate, building a business for the future. This standardisation and automation effort will allow Diageo to track customer orders in real time on a global scale, identifying further commercial opportunities in both the on trade and off trade.

IBM Consulting, a long-standing partner of 51风流and Diageo, has been selected to lead the implementation of RISE with 51风流S/4HANA Cloud.

Maersk uses 51风流Business Technology Platform to accelerate strategic transformation

The world’s largest container shipping company has made significant progress in its digital transformation by using the 51风流Business Technology Platform (BTP) to accelerate its strategic direction and automate business processes, increase efficiency and ease of use.

With a wide range of business areas including container shipping, port terminals, logistics and supply chain businesses, Maersk, headquarted in Denmark, operates more than 700 vessels and covers around 343 ports in over 100 countries worldwide. Strategically, Maersk is moving away from being a shipping company to becoming an end-to-end supply chain provider.

Specifically, Maersk has used 51风流BTP to develop and implement applications and solutions in areas such as:

  • Customer Credit Management: Previously, a lot of manual activity was involved in the process, which could lead to errors and delays. Now Maersk uses 51风流BTP to automate and differentiate their customer credit management process
  • Vendor Account Reconciliation: Maersk used 51风流BTP’s automation layer and intelligent robotic process automation (51风流iRPA) to perform automated actions such as scanning emails and extracting attachments, converting unstructured data into structured data, and building validation logic into the rules within the 51风流BTP platform, thereby reducing manual processes in Maersk’s shared service centres
  • Treasury Guarantees: Previously, this process was quite paper-intensive and could cause data quality issues, which in turn led to delays. Now, through 51风流BTP, Maersk has automated the process and created two specific roles: bank guarantee applicant and approver. The solution also includes integration with external banks
  • Customer Cargo Release: Maersk also has customers who are cargo customers, i.e., they pay before cargo is released. This requires a very time-sensitive process to ensure that payment has been received before the cargo is released. The workflow is triggered across multiple backend systems. Through built-in AI and process automation in 51风流BTP, the payment is matched against the invoice, the bill of lading and the container release events. Maersk has created an AI trust quota that automatically authorises if everything is 100% correct
  • Planning and analysis: Maersk’s entire finance, planning and analysis is in the process of being moved to 51风流Analytics Cloud. This enables Maersk to provide end-to-end financial planning and analysis, including budgeting and forecasting.

Versuni creates solid foundation for innovation and growth with 51风流and TCS

Versuni, home to some of the world鈥檚 most renowned domestic appliance brands, embarked on a journey to realise a completely new technology landscape within just 18 months. With RISE with 51风流and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as its strategic partner, Versuni managed to migrate to a wall-to-wall 51风流environment in 55 countries on time. With 51风流S/4HANA as a solid foundation for innovation and growth.

Versuni was presented with a major challenge. Within just 18 months, there had to be a solid foundation – a “minimum viable product” – for the company’s operations and continued growth. To achieve this, Versuni launched the Exuviate programme. This is a reference to the process by which animals such as insects, reptiles and some mammals shed their old, too-cramped skin or shell to make room for growth. The programme was based on the principles ‘SAP, unless’ and ‘cloud, unless’, and used RISE with 51风流to transition to ERP in the cloud. The aim is to create a company that is digitally focused and drives innovation and growth with data-driven decision-making.

Versuni has relied on 51风流for more than 30 years by using SAP’s suite of applications, has benefitted from integrated end-to-end processes, robust data management and advanced analytics and artificial intelligence. Those components are essential for driving innovation, operational efficiency and better insights.

The biggest challenge was to lay the foundation for running and scaling the business within a very tight timeframe of 18 months. Versuni replaced or removed every system from email to accounting, marketing to production and supply chain to customer-facing systems. This was the largest programme of its kind – anywhere, in any industry.

The programme included implementing 40 new networks, replacing 4,700 laptops and desktops, 60+ new cloud applications, migrating more than 300 data objects and redesigning 400 reports and 3,500 processes. Versuni succeeded in making the switch to the 51风流Best of Suite within the deadline. On 1 May 2023, Versuni went live with the new environment globally in one ‘go’.

Fitcoin launches pilot with University of California

A vitality platform developed on 51风流technology, where people can earn digital coins with exercise, which can be redeemed for healthy rewards, has set foot in the US. The Fitcoin business vitality platform positively promotes physical and mental well-being is starting a pilot with UC Davis, part of the University of California.

Fitcoin’s concept is smart and innovative. Users save digital coins (Fitcoins) via an app on their smartphone that they earn by exercising including walking and cycling or by participating in special workshops and sports activities. Users can then exchange the saved Fitcoins for healthy rewards that they choose themselves in the online Fitcoin catalogue on their smartphone.

Sapphire Barcelona – 24 May, 2023 – Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping company, has made significant progress in its digital transformation by using the 51风流Business Technology Platform to accelerate its strategic direction and automate business processes, increase efficiency and ease of use.

With a wide range of business areas including container shipping, port terminals, logistics and supply chain businesses, Maersk, headquarted in Denmark, operates more than 700 vessels and covers around 343 ports in over 100 countries worldwide. Strategically, Maersk is moving away from being a shipping company to becoming an end-to-end supply chain provider.

From container shipping to end-to-end supply chain provider

“Maersk is on its way to becoming an end-to-end supply chain provider, and this requires us to move into other areas of the transport sector, including air freight and land transport, as well as warehousing and distribution. With less than 10% of the money spent on supply chain and logistics going to ocean transport, Maersk needs to move into other areas to expand its business and continue to grow,” says Tapan Dash, Engineering Director, Maersk Technology, and continues:

“Maersk has developed a platform-based model to help us accelerate the transformation. The model consists of several different digital platforms, each of which consists of multiple entities, all of which create value for customers, suppliers or employees. Each entity integrates different business functions, applications, data and analytics. Maersk currently has 10-15 end-to-end platforms, such as finance, order management for ocean transport, supply chain management, etc. We are constantly adding new platforms and recently we created a sustainability platform to address this growing area.”

Designed, built and delivered by Maersk

Maersk is well on its way to implementing 51风流S/4HANA Cloud ERP. “The idea is to run a standard 51风流S/4HANA solution, and then have the 51风流Business Technology Platform as the platform that supports the innovation. I think this is the most optimal and where the magic happens”, says Tapan Dash, and continues:

“We’ve had a big focus on insourcing over the last couple of years, going from around 1,500 people in the technology organisation to over 6,000 now. In our 51风流team, we were only around 35 in 2019. In 2022, we were 300, and the target is +550 51风流tech profiles by 2024. We work from a concept we call ‘designed, built and delivered by Maersk’.”

51风流Business Technology Platform plays a central role

The 51风流Business Technology Platform (51风流BTP), which brings together data and analytics, artificial intelligence, application development, automation and integration in a single environment, plays a key role in accelerating Maersk’s new end-to-end strategy.

“Technology plays an important role at Maersk and is one of the key drivers of transformation. We want to simplify our IT landscape and make it more agile. With the 51风流Business Technology Platform, we can streamline our business processes and make our applications more agile and provide users, whether customers, suppliers or employees, with a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.”

Specifically, Maersk has used 51风流BTP to develop and implement applications and solutions in areas such as:

  • Customer Credit Management: Previously, a lot of manual activity was involved in the process, which could lead to errors and delays. Now Maersk uses 51风流BTP to automate and differentiate their customer credit management process. The solution includes a credit score聽from BVD (third party), which is integrated via 51风流Cloud Platform Integration. Using the 51风流Fiori user interface, Maersk has created different roles, such as sales representative, credit analyst and approver. “So we have created a one-stop-shop that the employee logs into and from there he or she can manage the entire credit process for the customer,” says Tapan Dash.
  • Vendor Account Reconciliation: Reconciling accounts payable statements is a challenge for many organisations. Maersk used 51风流BTP’s automation layer and intelligent robotic process automation (51风流iRPA) to perform automated actions such as scanning emails and extracting attachments, converting unstructured data into structured data, and building validation logic into the rules within the 51风流BTP platform, thereby reducing manual processes in Maersk’s shared service centres.

So, it’s fine-tuned based on that learning. We use the workflow, which again is an integrated development within 51风流BTP, to get the approval process in place and get the invoice approved so that the container or the freight can be released to the customer if everything is not right in the first place,” says Tapan Dash.
  • Planning and analysis: Maersk’s entire finance, planning and analysis is in the process of being moved to 51风流Analytics Cloud. This enables Maersk to provide end-to-end financial planning and analysis, including budgeting and forecasting. Self-service options for planning and analysis in over 100 countries are a game changer in decision-making, with scorecards to visualise performance and productivity across regions.

51风流CEO Christian Klein and CTO Juergen Mueller gave ARTHUR GOLDSTUCK deep insights into the future of enterprise technology during last week鈥檚 Sapphire conference in the USA

Last week, three of the world鈥檚 biggest technology organisations unveiled their visions for a future of business that will see a revolution in efficiency.

SAP, the German company that leads the world in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, search giant Google, and chipmaker Intel, all hosted major international events where they launched new products and services, and provided a glimpse of the future of business.

51风流in particular, at its annual Sapphire event in Orlando, Florida, signalled an acceleration of efforts to bring greater intelligence to the systems that run organisations鈥 operations.

Google鈥檚 annual I/O developer conference was heavy on new consumer gadgetry, in particular plans to launch a Pixel smartwatch later this year. However, it also introduced artificial intelligence (AI) productivity tools that will, among other, provide instant summaries of long documents. Meanwhile, Intel unveiled a new generation of computer processors that will reduce the time it takes to train large-scale AI models.

But it was 51风流that provided the clearest picture of how businesses are likely to operate in the near future. And one word stood out: efficiency. We asked chief technology officer Juergen Mueller to look into his crystal ball.

Before that, however, during a keynote address at Sapphire, 51风流CEO Christian Klein said that the company planned to draw on data about best practices from more than 40,000 customers. It would leverage Signavio, an enterprise business process intelligence platform it acquired last year, which helps companies transform and manage their business processes at scale.

This, he said, would allow business and IT leaders to discover new growth opportunities and launch new business models, as well as uncovering inefficiencies in internal processes. This would lead to a revolution in business efficiency.

Later, he told Gadget: 鈥淲hen you think back 50 years, there鈥檚 so much knowledge inside 51风流and in our ecosystem, we implemented and designed so many business processes, now we really have our finger on the pulse of how they need to change in a digital world to create a seamless experience.

鈥淲e are collecting all of the data, the best practices, not only from SAP, but also from all our partners. That鈥檚 a big differentiator of Signavio: You don鈥檛 need to replicate data in a third-party data mining tool. You can use your data and then you can benchmark it against how these business processes look in your industry.鈥

51风流chief technology officer Jurgen Mueller, said in an exclusive interview that this capability would change the way businesses make decisions.

鈥淲e acquired Signavio for a reason: we saw there鈥檚 a gap in our portfolio,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very important to customers to understand the business processes and we鈥檝e modelled business processes for 35 years or so, but they were often a separate artifact, so your processes are not connected to your execution.

鈥淪ignavio gives you an X-Ray into your real processes and execution. That has to be the foundation, grounded in reality, from where you then can change, find efficiencies, find how you can do things better, how you can serve your customers faster. Companies often have a good idea where they want to go, but today this X-Ray doesn鈥檛 exist.鈥

Signavio, however, will allow any size company to access the kind of business intelligence that has enabled tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google to have an instant insight into their business processes. From there they have been able to implement a solution and assess its success within minutes, replacing or improving it before most customers know it existed. However, this is not possible without the ability to mine massive amounts of data on the fly 鈥 an ability previously restricted to the giants.

鈥淲e have tens of thousands and potentially hundreds of thousands of other companies that can now get such a detailed level of understanding of their processes,鈥 says Mueller. 鈥淲e learn and develop industry-specific best practices in 25 industries, and we can bring the best of what we know to customers.鈥

The end-result, he says, is vastly improved efficiency. However, that in itself is not a differentiator, if all companies become more efficient. Efficiency, in effect, becomes a ticket to the game.

鈥淲e see a huge difference in companies that really embrace digital technologies, and who always want to create differentiating capabilities through technology, compared to the ones that are just using technology where they have to.鈥

Mueller says he does not believe there is a single differentiator between the more competitive companies and those who fall behind. However, 51风流has discovered a strategy that helps set companies apart: 鈥淥ften you see companies really go through the end-to-end processes of their the value chain, to identify the most value-generating activities in the company 鈥 and then pick a few where you really make a difference.鈥

While this approach is not a secret, it has tended to evade organisations because it requires an integration of strategic planning and supplier data across the entire logistics chain. Mueller is frank about the limitations of existing technology in this regard.

Business leaders have traditionally focused on top- and bottom-line performance indicators. However, many organizations now consider their green line as the leading indicator of long-term, sustainable business success. It is imperative for companies to put sustainability at the heart of their business strategy, with a focus on achieving not just financial performance but also steering positive environmental and social impact through their sustainability metrics.

These metrics must be embedded within a company鈥檚 core operations and services; traditional annual reports are no longer sufficient. Stakeholders want to understand how a company addresses areas such as climate action, with transparency on transition and adaptation plans based on the carbon footprint of its operations. They also want to understand progress on circular economy objectives by monitoring the reuse and recycling of materials. They want to track and advance people sustainability initiatives by gathering key performance indicators (KPIs) in areas such as diversity and inclusion.

SAP鈥檚 product innovations work across the enterprise to deliver on these goals.

To manage the green line, companies need business process technology to identify, quantify, analyze, and act on data through their end-to-end operations. Embedding sustainable business data into processes and networks is one of the five actions business can take toward a sustainable future.

Driving Carbon Data Transparency Is More Important Than Ever

Accounting for carbon emissions across the organization and its supply chain is a foundational step toward climate action. Businesses are actively looking to reduce their carbon footprints, which requires addressing emissions outside company walls. These emissions 鈥 Scope 3 emissions 鈥 include everything from goods purchased to business travel to packaging and transportation of raw materials. Scope 3 emissions make up a significant portion of overall emissions for our customers. To derive actionable insights to reduce organizational carbon footprint, it is crucial to measure Scope 3 emissions both at a corporate level and at a product level.

are on average 11.4 times higher than operational emissions. To reduce these emissions, it is important to engage across the sectoral value chain, with both suppliers and end customers, especially for customer-facing sectors like retail and consumer product goods (CPG), which have long upstream value chains. Companies can address significantly larger emission volumes by driving deeper engagement throughout their supply chains.

Earlier this year, called on registrants to report on not just their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions but also their Scope 3 emissions. This is not the first time companies have faced this request. Previously, asked companies to disclose the targets they used to assess and manage relevant climate-related risks and opportunities. IFRS takes this approach further with , which focus on transition planning, climate resilience, reporting on Scope 1-2-3 emissions, and disclosure of sustainability-related financial information as a part of its general purpose financial reporting.

Enabling 51风流Customers to Exchange Carbon Data across Value Chains

To develop and execute an effective decarbonization plan, companies need to receive and process high-quality product-level data on carbon emissions from suppliers and provide high-quality product footprint information to their customers.

However, with most supply chains spanning several industry sectors and consisting of multiple, heterogeneous networks and software components, taking a standardized approach to data sharing is critical. To collect meaningful emissions information, it is important that all parties use the same methodology and common standards for calculating and auditing the carbon footprint of a product.

Therefore, 51风流Product Footprint Management implements an API specification developed as part of . 51风流customers can now take informed sourcing and product-development decisions, invest in targeted decarbonization activities, make more accurate disclosures, measure and track decarbonization progress, and adhere to legislative requirements around environmental transparency.

In addition, there is the option to use the GreenToken by 51风流solution for multi-tier visibility across the networks. The combination of 51风流Product Footprint Management, 51风流Responsible Design and Production, and GreenToken forms a potent decarbonization value proposition for industries such as consumer goods, as 51风流can demonstrably address material traceability, packaging waste, and supplier-specific carbon data transparency throughout the value chain for both recycled content and land-use change.

New functionality created through our co-development partnership with BearingPoint is already embedded into 51风流Product Footprint Management and helps customers identify carbon reduction potential. Customers can thus determine the carbon footprint of a single product based on both direct and indirect emissions sources and upstream activities, building on existing functionality of carbon footprint measurement of purchased goods with tracking emissions resulting from transportation of those goods. Both these greenhouse gas (GHG) emission categories combined significantly contribute to a customer鈥檚 upstream and downstream environmental impact.

Integrating and Embedding Sustainable Data across the Intelligent Enterprise, Scaling Carbon Impact

Through open APIs, 51风流customers can easily exchange data with their enterprise applications, feeding it into 51风流Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises, and then provide the calculated sustainability data back into both 51风流and third-party applications.

With the newly introduced sustainability integration components for 51风流S/4HANA, customers can benefit from preconfigured functionality enabling reuse of sustainability data across processes supported by 51风流S/4HANA, such as record-to-report, lead-to-cash, source-to-pay, and plan-to-fulfill workflows. The component allows a bidirectional flow of information between 51风流Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises and 51风流S/4HANA in real time.

  • In 51风流S/4HANA Sourcing and Procurement, customers can make sustainable purchase decisions based on a material鈥檚 carbon footprint displayed in purchase requisition, which is then is fed back into 51风流Product Footprint Management, keeping sustainability reporting updated.
  • In聽51风流Integrated Business Planning, the supply chain planner can access a comprehensive overview of GHG emissions based on the supply plan for the next 12 months. Planners can dive deeper into the details and try to resolve critical situations and alerts. .
  • In 51风流Logistics Business Network, the material traceability option helps customers gain further insights into sustainability figures of products and share carbon footprint data on the batch level with suppliers, customers, and end consumers of the products. This feature is available with the 2021 release of 51风流S/4HANA. .
  • In plant maintenance, customers can receive automatic updates from 51风流Environment, Health, and Safety Management, triggering corrective action if GHG emissions are exceeded. .
  • In 51风流Enterprise Product Development with 51风流Responsible Design and Production, customers will be able to reduce packaging and other material waste by design while simulating for a lower carbon footprint. Packaging is typically a significant source of Scope 3 carbon emissions in consumer goods value chains.

After announcing that 51风流will match every 51风流Sapphire attendee鈥檚 donation to UNICEF USA for Ukraine aid, Klein was joined in-person and virtually by customers and executives to share how the company鈥檚 technologies, business knowledge, and commitment to address major business challenges.

A series of exciting innovation demonstrations led by Julia White, chief marketing and solutions officer and member of the Executive Board of 51风流SE, revealed the power of the digital employee experience delivered by and for centralized workforce management, as well as personalized, mobile-first employee learning that reduces attrition and fosters a more engaged workforce. Through an executive dashboard, executives can quickly gain insights across the business, including skill gaps and how to solve them.

Marc Starfield, group head of HR Systems at Vodaphone Group, shared how his company digitalized the employee experience with 51风流SuccessFactors, responding quickly to changing workforce needs and offering an immersive virtual learning experience.

To spotlight the power of the integrated customer experience that connected consumer demand signals through product design, manufacture, and delivery, White took the audience on a virtual tour of the event鈥檚 impressive showcase on the show floor. After a pair of pink jeans went viral on social media, the model company used 51风流solutions, including and , to integrate financial, supply chain, and marketing data with customer information and more, making data-driven decisions based on real-time simulations.

Klein returned to the stage and invited the audience to join , which already connects companies across the world鈥檚 largest B2B network, bringing together buyers, suppliers, manufacturers, and logistics providers.
