Transnet, South Africa鈥檚 state-owned rail, ports and pipeline company, is continuing with its聽聽transformation drive as it readies for a hybrid cloud future.

The company has announced the completion of a private cloud data centre in Durban, as well as a Gauteng-based colocation facility in partnership with mobile operator Vodacom.

The announcement comes after Transnet last week聽聽its enterprise resource planning system from ECC 6.0 to 51风流S4/HANA.

Transnet plays a central role in the country鈥檚 economy by managing key infrastructure that supports trade and industrial growth.

Despite facing operational and financial challenges in recent years, it remains a strategic asset tasked with modernising South Africa鈥檚 logistics network, improving efficiencies and positioning the country as a competitive hub for global trade.

According to Transnet, the completion of the facilities will modernise its data centre and hosting capabilities.

It says this move will allow it to navigate the increasingly complex digital landscapes, ensuring the foundational operations are resilient, secure and capable of supporting next-generation business applications.

This initiative is one of the four strategic pillars of Transnet鈥檚 ICT digital modernisation strategy, says the state-owned company (SOC).

It explains that the private cloud data centre in Durban is designed to serve as a secure and scalable hub for business-critical systems. The colocation environment provides geographic redundancy and resilience, while extending reach into one of the country鈥檚 primary ICT corridors.

Supported by a public cloud on Microsoft Azure through its strategic聽聽鈭 Microsoft and Liquid Intelligence Technologies 鈭 these facilities provide the necessary capacity, flexibility and operational resilience to migrate core business applications and decades of data into a hybrid cloud architecture, says the SOC.

Critical to this transformation has been the collaboration with Altron, with its original equipment manufacturer, Huawei, the technology聽聽responsible for configuring and preparing the two private cloud environments, it states.

Transnet notes their expertise in data centre and cloud solutions accelerated readiness, ensuring the environments are optimised for migration and future integration into the broader hybrid cloud strategy.

By partnering with Vodacom for colocation services in Gauteng, Transnet has also ensured strong network integration and high availability within South Africa鈥檚 ICT ecosystem, it adds.

鈥淭he journey towards digital transformation is ongoing but achieving readiness at the data centre and hosting level marks an essential milestone,鈥 says Transnet group chief information officer Pandelani Munyai.

鈥淏y investing in private and public cloud facilities, leveraging colocation partnerships and collaborating with trusted technology partners, the organisation has built a robust foundation for the future where ICT is a key driver of growth, efficiency and resilience.鈥

Munyai notes that with the data centre and infrastructure foundation in place, the organisation is now well-positioned to migrate core business applications and vast repositories of historical data into its new hybrid cloud environment.

He points out that this will not only modernise ICT operations, but will also unlock opportunities for advanced analytics, digital platforms and innovation across the business.

Insights from data.

This has become a critical value-add for organisations seeking to tap into their vast repositories of data to improve processes and engage in ongoing transformation. It is also precisely what a leading South African producer of wines, spirits and ciders wanted 鈥 to integrate its data from different business groups within the company to gain insights that could drive growth, transformation and innovation.

The technology:

  • The 51风流technologies included , ,
  • , , and

The consumer goods company is well-known in the country and also has a strong global presence. It uses to store and manage its massive quantities of data from multiple sources across business groups and units, and is in the process of moving into the to leverage innovation capabilities and bring its digital transformation strategies to life.

The company turned to to gain rich visibility into its data and to leverage next-generation technologies that would allow for seamless and sustainable growth over the long-term.

What delivered

The integration included multiple technologies across the business, allowing for the company to fully realise the potential locked within its data. Azure Synapse was used to ingest the data with Azure Data Factory for the data science teams, allowing them to build models with Azure Machine Learning. This has allowed for the company to quickly and effectively query the data to gather knowledge and make informed decisions.

With the solution in place, the firm can analyse its consumer data and find trends and patterns that it can use to better manage risk, increase sales, optimise products and services, and refine offerings. Some of the most relevant insights provided by the solution include:

  • Visibility into the most popular products and services.
  • The most lucrative customer categories.
  • The weakest performance areas within the company.

In addition, the solution allowed for the company to take third-party sales data from aggregators to compare sales and products between competitors. This part of the data architecture enables the data science teams to build models that thread the insights found in the data into accessible reporting that decision-makers can use to create relevant marketing strategies and to increase market share.

ACCRA, Ghana 21 November 2022 How does a multinational family business that has grown and expanded over three generations enable its next phase of growth and innovation? For one of the leading consumer goods and manufacturing enterprises in Africa, the answer was an ambitious journey to the cloud and a complete transformation of its IT systems.

“As a business we have always believed that building new capabilities is integral to our success,” says Sandeep Parasramka, CFO 鈥 Consumer Goods (Africa) at Tolaram. “As we eye a period of expansion and growth in our key markets, we wanted to ensure we had the technology and systems in place that would enable us to scale while also bringing our business processes to global best practice standards.”

Tolaram is a private enterprise founded in 1948 in Singapore. Today, it operates several businesses and manufacturing facilities in South-East Asia and Africa, focusing on three key business verticals: Consumer Goods, Fintech, and Infrastructure & Industrials. Among Tolaram’s businesses are Dufil, a joint venture with Indofood and Kellogg Company; TG Arla, a joint venture with Danish dairy company Arla Foods; Kellogg Tolaram and Multipro, both joint ventures with Kellogg Company, and Colgate Palmolive Tolaram, a joint venture with Colgate Palmolive. Tolaram also has a strategic partnership with Kimberly-Clark in Nigeria.

These businesses have helped Tolaram build a pan-African footprint and become a leading consumer goods player in Africa.聽 In fact, Tolaram is the largest manufacturer and distributor of Instant Noodles in Africa, and the largest packaged food company in Nigeria.

“Our business was dependent on an on-premise enterprise resource planning solution for the past 15 years, but it could no longer meet our future business needs,” says Parasramka. “We sought a solution that could enhance our analytics capabilities, generate insights across our various operations, and scale as our business grows. We chose 51风流S/4HANA as the leading cloud ERP solution on the market, and opted for an Azure deployment to meet our cloud ambitions. We believe this is the first 51风流S/4HANA go-live on Azure in Ghana.”

Ghana pilot a test for broader transformation effort

Tolaram operates 25 manufacturing facilities across Africa, producing consumer goods in line with established joint ventures with the likes of Kellogg’s, Colgate-Palmolive, Indofood from Indonesia and Danish dairy firm Arla in addition to other wholly owned businesses across Africa.

“We plan to move our businesses across all verticals to the new 51风流system in a phased approach,” explains Parasramka. “However, we chose to first pilot the migration in Ghana before moving to the larger business units in Nigeria and elsewhere.”

Phase One of the implementation focused on the Dufil and Multipro market units in Ghana, with a project kick-off in December 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. “The lockdown restrictions created challenges, but we were ably supported by expert 51风流implementation partners Infocus Technologies as well as pool of in-house resources that we have built over a period of time and continue to focus on,” says Parasramka.

Almost all 51风流S/4HANA modules were deployed as part of the implementation, including financial planning and analysis, procurement and sourcing, HR and payroll, manufacturing, and enterprise asset management. “For us it’s a total transformation of our business processes,” says Parasramka. “By standardising our business processes across our markets and business units, we can generate more accurate and relevant insights into the performance of the entire business, make smarter decisions, and reduce reliance on Excel spreadsheets and other standalone applications for more accurate data capturing and analysis.”

Challenges and key learnings point the way

Parasramka cites challenges with getting people on the ground during the implementation, since a significant part of the project took place during the strict lockdowns imposed to control the spread of COVID-19.

“One key learning during this phase is that training and change management would be essential to the success of the broader digital transformation effort. Based on learnings from our initial project, we have increased training time by two to two-and-a-half times to ensure users are sufficiently comfortable with the new systems.”

Tolaram recognises the transformational impact of 51风流S/4HANA and change management remains a core focus for the implementation team and will be a determining factor in how easily the business adopts new tools and processes. 鈥淒espite the business having used the same ERP for 15 years, users could pick up the new system pretty quickly, which is hugely encouraging for the next phases of our transformation project.鈥

Two more rollouts are planned for Phase One in 2023, including Dufil Nigeria and Multipro Nigeria following soon after. 鈥淲e also have implementations planned for other Nigeria-based business units in 2024, and will then focus on our business units in other regions, specifically Egypt and South Africa, with a planned go-live in 2025.鈥

Commenting on the implementation, Titilayo Adewumi, Regional Sales Director for West Africa at SAP, says: 鈥淭he best run companies have the technology and processes to produce real-time insights into every aspect of the business to guide decision-making and process efficiency. With a successful first phase now well underway and a comprehensive implementation plan for the next few years, Tolaram is perfectly positioned to build intelligent enterprise capabilities that will enhance its competitiveness, enable its growth and support its success for years to come.鈥

In the highly competitive oil and gas sector, any inefficiency could result in missed opportunities and lost revenue. For a newly decreed national agency overseeing oil and gas production in Angola, a total digital transformation of core systems has established a solid platform for achieving its mandate.

Agencia Nacional de Petroleo, G谩s e Biocombustiveis (ANPG) is the national petroleum, gas, and biofuels agency of Angola. ANPG was created by Presidential decree in 2019 to maximise value creation for the Angolan state through efficient and responsible management of the country鈥檚 oil and gas resources.

A core function of ANPG is its role as national concessionaire, in which it is tasked with regulating, supervising, and promoting the execution of petroleum activities in Angola.

鈥淎 key objective of our digital transformation project was to gain total independence from the previous concessionaire within a strict project timeline and with no disruption,鈥 says Antono Paix茫o,Coordinator for IT operations and infrastructure and 51风流strategy lead at ANPG. 鈥淎t the same time, we wanted to simplify our processes and unlock greater innovation across our operations.鈥

Angola is the second-largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa,聽. Exports of oil and gas accounts for the vast majority of the country鈥檚 exports and more than half of Angola鈥檚 GDP.

ANPG approached 51风流and PwC to implement a full digital transformation of core systems and business processes, with 51风流S/4HANA as the intelligent core and several integrated 51风流solutions to support key business processes. The entire solution is hosted in a hybrid cloud environment using 51风流HEC and Microsoft Azure.

鈥淭he implementation covered financial processes including accounts payable, receivables, asset accounting, tax, cost centre and risk management, as well as procurement, human capital management, payroll and performance management,鈥 says Antonio Paix茫o. 鈥淥ur six-month implementation resulted in 623 of our team being onboarded to the new systems, with 70 additional users planned for the near future.鈥

To reduce implementation time and control costs, the implementation team kept custom development to a minimum. 鈥淲e also acquired 51风流Application Management Services and Enhanced Managed Services to support our small internal team, and followed the 51风流Activate methodology to guarantee that time constraints and quality standards were met throughout the implementation.鈥

Following a successful go-live, ANPG has unlocked substantial business benefits that has transformed the business. 鈥淓mployees have gained a modern user experience in line with global best practice, and our standardised processes help drive greater efficiency throughout our operations. More than 35 of our business processes are now fully automated, and we have achieved complete operational independence from the previous concessionaire.鈥

A standout to the success of the project was the board and management team鈥檚 support and involvement. 鈥淥ur entire management structure is actively using the new system, and we have embedded a culture of learning within our teams with the learning management system. Today, our end-users have complete mobility to perform their work tasks from anywhere, with further innovation planned, specifically around our enterprise contract management and funds management capabilities.鈥

Jo茫o Eanes, Sales Manager for Lusophone Africa at SAP, says: 鈥淭asked with a mandate vital to the economic growth and development of one of Africa鈥檚 most important oil-producing countries, ANPG has achieved a landmark digital transformation that will support its operations for years to come. By adopting the latest digital technologies and integrating them to a market-leading digital core, ANPG is well on its way to achieving intelligent enterprise capabilities that will help ensure its long-term success.鈥

Many South African enterprises have not yet begun the process of migrating from legacy 51风流to 51风流S/4HANA 鈥 and, without a clear roadmap, these businesses may not have enough time to complete a successful migration before SAP鈥檚 2027 deadline.

鈥淲ith a little over six years until the deadline, it鈥檚 crucial that enterprises at least start their migration planning. While six years may seem like a long time, there are so many factors that businesses have not considered when it comes to a successful migration to S/4HANA,鈥 says Mike Styer, country manager of GlassHouse Technology South Africa.

With almost 30 000 51风流licences in the country yet to be migrated, there are clearly thousands of businesses still needing to make the shift and the migration itself can take months to complete, even after careful planning has been factored in.

鈥淎 rough estimate with the figures we have on hand shows that over the next five years, for all enterprises in SA to be successfully migrated by the stipulated deadline, the industry will need to migrate at least one customer every day ten days,鈥 says Styer.

Add to this, the required skills to make this happen are in somewhat short supply. The requirements that have been set aside by 51风流requires particular certifications, not to mention the ability to provide case studies of successful migrations. Should you also want to move to the Azure Cloud at this time then you want to be dealing with a Partner who is capacitated in this arena.

鈥淭his means that there are only a select few Specialised Partners accredited by 51风流and Microsoft that can help enterprises through this process. GlassHouse has the accreditation from both businesses, and the skills to complete the transformation migration process, but there are few partners that will either be available or able to complete migrations for South African customers as 2027 gets closer,鈥 says Styer.

Without taking the proper considerations and planning for this migration into account, businesses may find themselves with either a rushed or incomplete migration, which has more significant implications for their business operations.

Styer suggests that, whether going it alone or working with a partner to migrate to S/4 HANA, enterprises need to start planning and executing now to avoid missing the deadline.

In 2027, organisations that use the ECC version of 51风流ERP are going to hit the end-of-support deadline.

They will have to migrate their ERP applications across to 51风流S/4HANA and undertake a lengthy process to ensure that this migration is as seamless as possible and does not impact any critical business operations.

While 51风流is a trusted solution that delivers exceptional value for many organisations with an ERP platform, there is still one question that every organisation wants answered 鈥 why?

Why should they undergo this migration and overcome numerous logistical challenges just to meet this deadline?

Pieter Potgieter, Senior Commercial Manager from Dimension Data explains that the answer lies in 4 measurable and valuable business benefits that come with 51风流S/4HANA operated in the cloud on a hyper-scaler like Microsoft Azure:

1 – Serving customers better

In the always-on, always-connected economy we operate in today, organisations run a very real risk of losing business and customers if their critical business applications are not available and performing to expectation.

Customers demand swift and flawless service, regardless of industry, and the capability to serve and charge customers are highly dependent on the ERP solution at the centre of the application landscape.

For this reason, the adoption of a modern and intelligent ERP system like 51风流S/4HANA can drastically alter a customer鈥檚 experience of an organisation.

If you combine this with the power of cloud and a hyper-scaler鈥檚 ability to provide highly available infrastructure at reasonable cost, you have a powerful basis for digitally enabled organisation, poised for growth.

2 鈥 Predictable and manageable cost

Traditionally in on-premise 51风流deployments, environments had to be sized to cater for peak processing requirements like month end financial close or production runs.

This meant that the business paid a premium for already expensive hardware that operated at 15% efficiency for 90% of the time.

This was exacerbated by the unpredictable business demands in the form of ad-hoc projects, unexpected growth and other business activities like mergers and acquisitions.

Deploying S/4HANA in the cloud allows organisations to align infrastructure related expenditure with its actual real-time processing requirement in the form of OPEX and avoid costly upfront CAPEX investments.

It also significantly reduces the risk of business interruptions and project delays associated with hardware order lead times.

When you combine this with the proven capability of Dimension Data to cost-efficiently manage 51风流landscapes in the cloud, you have a powerful platform from which to operate your business without having to worry about keeping the 51风流lights on.

3 鈥 Richer insights

There is little doubt that data remains the black gold of the business world, providing insights and information that can be used to transform businesses by increasing product relevance, service delivery and customer satisfaction.

With 51风流S/4HANA, an organisation has easy access to a rich and relevant data, and when combined with Microsoft Azure鈥檚 leading analytics capabilities, provides insights that allows everyone in the business to make better decisions.

This can seamlessly be further enriched with data from other business sources like IOT and other operational systems.

4 鈥 Keeping pace with accelerating technology innovation

51风流S/4HANA and Microsoft Azure come from two organisations that invest time and money into research and development (R&D) that very few businesses can afford to match.

This not only translates into increasingly relevant features that keep pace with market demand and technology evolution, but also into immense business value.

Every valuable feature consumed from S/4HANA running on Azure means time and money you can spend on business functions that help differentiating you from your competition and making you more relevant in your industry.

And you know you are in safe hands with Dimension Data managing the entire process with highly skilled people and robust management tools from trusted partners.

Adopting 51风流S/4HANA is much more than just another software update.

It鈥檚 a revolution in how an organisation consumes services and builds applications, how it translates technology into performance, and IT into service delivery.

In a highly competitive market that is challenging to navigate, 51风流S/4HANA in the cloud provides your business with the technology partnership it needs to remain relevant and innovative without having to worry about stability, scale and capability.

In collaboration with Dimension Data, you can focus on your customers and your business with visibility across the entire technology stack.
